Where’s the Beef?
Right Here—But Leave Your Questions at the Door
If cleanliness is next to godliness, then The Meat Hook in Hudson, NY deserves to be canonized. The moment you step inside, you’re struck by how impeccably clean, pristinely organized, and visually pleasing the shop is. From the gleaming countertops to the well-stocked displays, it’s like the Dior showroom of butcher shops—only instead of haute couture, it’s high-grade chuck.
In addition to their premium meats, they offer a curated selection of pantry staples, non-perishables, and even a few fresh fruits and vegetables—because even carnivores need roughage, apparently. But make no mistake, I came here on a mission: burgers. And my mission was gloriously accomplished. Juicy, flavorful, perfectly ground—these burgers were so good they deserve their own Instagram account.
Now, why only three stars? Let’s talk about the people part of the meat-and-greet.
I had a few basic questions about the cuts they offer and what exactly goes into their burger blend. You’d think I asked the guy behind the counter to recite Shakespeare in pig Latin while juggling ribeyes. His level of enthusiasm was somewhere between “I’d rather be anywhere else” and “please disappear.” Had he shown even a slice of interest in engaging, I likely would’ve walked out with a few gorgeous steaks and several pieces of filet mignon. But alas, the only thing tender was the meat—not the service.
Then came the cashier experience. After scanning my items (efficiently, I’ll give them that), I was asked, point blank:
“Would you like to leave a gratuity?”
Now listen, I’m all for supporting small businesses and tipping when service is above and beyond. But when the only thing you served me was mild contempt and a brown paper bag, it feels a bit… odd. Tacky, even. If you want a tip, offer me some beefy knowledge, a smile, or a simple “how’s your day?”
Bottom line?
✔️ Immaculate space.
✔️ Delicious burgers worth the drive.
❌ Staff energy: giving “unseasoned tofu.”
I’ll definitely be back for the meat—but I’ll leave my expectations for warmth and hospitality in the car.
