Where to Eat and Drink in Sellwood-Moreland | Eater Portland

"Former Tasty N Alder chef Josh Schimmel-Bristow opened this lime-green cart where he meddles with Mexican-style cuisine using Pacific Northwestern ingredients. The menu here offers items like chimichangas, tacos, salads, and quesadillas, which are all customizable with options like braised verde chicken, chile-poached shrimp, and roasted cauliflower. Don’t miss the crispy rice, which is pancake-shaped and comes topped with a sunny side-up egg, queso fresco, avocado salsa, and crema — it can be made even more extra with the optional addition of fried chicken or fish. The Smile Pod has limited covered outdoor seating." - Alex Frane

This Crispy Rice may be one of the best dishes I’ve ever tasted. The egg and the crispy rice meld together so deliciously. Try it.

Google
OK…, I got the pastor chimichanga! It was full of black beens, charred peppers, cilantro, herbs, fresh veggies, salty cheese! Just packed with flavor. Saved it into the map as a favorite.! Stop by and give it a try.

Google
I've eaten here several times over the years and it's always been delicious. I've done a bunch of large to go orders and the staff is always really nice and efficient and we've never had an issue despite being high maintenance and asking for about a thousand avocado salsas. Great folks and great food!

We drove down to Westmoreland from North Portland specifically to try this place and we loved it! The food was delicious and well priced, the service was beyond incredible and friendly, and the atmosphere was perfect to suit our needs. I enjoyed three different tacos (Braised Verde Chicken, Black Bean and Roasted Poblano, and Fried Chicken!). My partner loved the Original Potato Burrito with Avocado, and my son demolished the kids quesadilla! Very dank Mexican food with some serious flavor! They have amazing vegetarian options, too! I highly recommend adding this spot to your weekly Mexican food go to!!

Google
Great tacos! Filling, flavorful and creative. Also most of the menu is gluten-free friendly. Folks who work there are awesome, too. Will definitely add this to the list of healthy, quick and tasty spots.

My boyfriend and I went on a roll the dice adventure. We wanted to try food somewhere new and ended up at the Meddling Lime. Their menu looks... interesting, but we gave it a try. Oh my goodness is it amazing! I ordered the crispy rice with chicken. It had amazing flavor and texture. Their fried chicken is made in front of you and is so much tastier than many places. My boyfriend ordered a fried chicken burrito. He was giving it thumbs up and happy hums the whole time. To finish it off we had one of their “famous” lime snickerdoodle cookies. I had never heard of them before, but I will now tell of their wonders. They are hard to imagine until you have sunk your teeth into one, and then you understand. The citrus zest perfectly compliments the sweetness of the cookie, and I don’t know that I’ve had a better flavored cookie (although it was a bit dry). Overall, I would recommend this awesome food to anyone looking to eat some outstanding food outside the traditional restaurant box!

Google
Ordered the corn and poblano chimichanga, delicious! Decent amount of food, comes with delicious cheese and sauces on top and they give you more salsa on the side as needed! Highly recommend!

Google
Fun food cart in north Sellwood with several picnic tables to sit and eat at. A couple nice vegan options (black bean & corn or avocado & beet). The salsas were a great side- highly recommend, but beware of the orange one which was quite spicy!

Yelp
The Meddling Lime food cart. If you haven't checked it out yet, you're missing out! The food from The Meddling Lime is seriously top-notch - always tasty, perfectly cooked, and served with lightning speed. It's like they have a sixth sense for when we're craving something delicious. It's become our go-to spot for a quick and amazing meal. But it's not just about the food - it's the awesome vibe they bring to the neighborhood. The folks behind the cart are friendly, welcoming, and always have a smile on their faces. They've become a staple around here, adding a dash of flavor and a whole lot of fun to our streets. In a world of big chains, it's local gems like The Meddling Lime that make our neighborhood special. They've turned grabbing a bite into a local experience, and we're lucky to have them. So, neighbors, if you're looking for a tasty adventure right in our backyard, give The Meddling Lime a try. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Worth the hype, quick, friendly, and delicious. We love anywhere that gives dog treats while they wait for their humans food. Rice and beans shown.

Evyn M.

Yelp
We love this cart! Delicious fresh Mexican food. Nice fluffy rice and yummy burrito bowls. My 4yo loves the black beans

Yelp
Have been patronizing The Meddling Lime since they first opened in 2018 - definitely the best food cart to ever occupy the Smile Pod, and so glad they've stuck around! The menu is huge for a food cart, but I rarely deviate from the street tacos. They are so good, it's hard to imagine ordering anything else! I've tried them all and every one of them is amazing, including the unique veggie options. My only bit of feedback - bring back the churros! Staff is super nice and the owner, Josh, is clearly deeply passionate about making amazing food. I have taken my family and friends here many times and never had a bad experience. (Picture is from when we drove into town just to get Meddling Lime and bring it back to our campsite).

Yelp
I visited this cart a ton while living in Selwood .. the food is oh so good I recommend the fried chicken but really everything is delicious and scrumptious

Yelp
First time being a patron to this food truck. Interesting menu with Mexican food influences and great reviews on their fried chicken. I ordered the crispy rice with fried chicken and the quesadilla for my girls. We go home, plated and dug in. The positive reviews on the fried chicken were no lie. Really good flavor, moist and crisp. The egg stayed a bit runny even after getting home. The rice, spices, cheese and Mexican influence was great! The quesadilla was also good. It wasn't fried and/or greasy which I appreciate since it was for my girls. The staff was friendly and helpful - we'll be back when craving fried chicken
google avatar

Anna Z.

Yelp
Friendly service and delicious burrito! Prepare yourself for a big meal - this burrito is flavorful and loaded. The protein I ordered was braised chicken and it was super moist and perfect.

Yelp
The food here has such a lasting impression on my tongue... that I can physiologically feel my body get excited to eat here as I walk toward the black and green food truck. If you're into a fusion of flavors that all fuse perfectly together - I highly recommend this place. The food, ambiance. and service are all consistently great.

Yelp
Wow. I will be thinking of the Al pastor taco until the next time I come here. So good! Getting more than one next time 100%. Great service. All around great spot.
google avatar

Michele Q.

Yelp
These are my favorite tacos in Portland. Soooooooo good. Love the roasted cauliflower, beans and poblano, and chili shrimp. Carnitas also so yummy. Really you can't go wrong. Highly recommend
google avatar

Claire E.

Yelp
Wow. The crispy rice with fried cauliflower is nothing short of heavenly. Highly suggest and it was so filling that I got two meals out of it! Pro tip: call and order ahead! They had my meal ready in 10 minutes and handed it to me as soon as I arrived, so easy. The staff were friendly and kind.
google avatar

Yelp
I tried their fried chicken taco which seems to be one of the most popular items on the menu. I figured I'd give that a try and if it were good, I go with some other items that peaked my interest. It was really pretty when I received it but it had absolutely no flavor. The chicken was bland, the sauce was forgettable and the corn tortilla seemed to be pulled straight from the platic bag it came in. Very underwhelming experience. The prices are pretty reasonable so I didn't feel too ripped off.
google avatar

Almonzo R.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Go with one of the signature crispy rice dishes. You won't be disappointed. The fried chicken can go toe to toe with the best of them. Pleasantly surprised. Will def eat again and highly recommend.

Yelp
Exceptional! It's like that great to be a one liner. The braised beef chimichanga ::bellisimo - Italian chef kiss gesture:: Knocked it our of the park. Would appreciate to try anything on the menu. They can make vegan/vegetarian option-so just ask! I had the brownie-satisfies the sweet tooth. I would try their other desserts on the next time we visit. Staff is super helpful and friendly. Even better-a blazer fan!
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
The staff is exceptionally friendly, the food is pretty tasty. I usually opt for the shrimp bowl. I only wish instead of shredded cheese on everything there was the option for authentic Mexican cheeses, but as an elevated Chipotle I will gladly visit The Meddling Lime.

Yelp
Don't try calling your order in! They'll take all in person orders before they get to taking your order. The rule of customer service is first come first serve. The whole point of calling an order in is to skip the line and make sure your order gets done in time, if you're in a time crunch (ie 30 min lunch). They had me on hold for 7 mins before I hung up and called again. No apology for the wait was given and then they told me it would be 10 mins for my order (17 mins gone out of a 30 minute lunch). I could've just drove there and placed my order and there wouldn't have been a difference if I had called ahead. Some real geniuses here.

Sam M.

Yelp
To be honest the food is amazing, but the people that work there not to much. I walk up to the window with the open sign on, the hours posted on there window say they don't close for an hour. So I wait and wait, the 3 workers inside just ignore me. Finally I give walk to my car and just leave. That's when they turn the open sign off. If they're closing I get it, I just don't understand why they just couldn't tell me inside of having me stand in the rain looking like an idiot.
google avatar

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this place. It's my new favorite place. Everything I've eaten has been delicious! I can't wait to go back. The people who work there are awesome! They're helpful and kind. There are a couple of tables out in front of the carts. It's nice. It's mellow, and really, I just adore every single thing I've eaten there. Shrimp burrito, blackened cod taco, Al Pastor taco. So GOOD!
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
Really tasty tacos served up generously. The Al pastor meat was a little too oily for my taste but the barbacoa won me over, so full of flavor and moisture; no salsa needed. As for the salsas, they don't joke around with their Habanero salsa, that stuff is fire. The patio has sun and shade to enjoy and decent street parking options. It's a great meet up spot, I'll definitely be coming back.

Yelp
I love all the unique recipes they have! This place is totally worth trying if you haven't, the flavors are fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Alyssa M.

Yelp
Highly recommend this place. Amazing food and great customer service always! As a vegetarian, there are so many great options.
google avatar

Benjamin C.

Yelp
The burritos here are so good! I was on the fence with the tacos since I'm not a huge fan of small soft shelled tacos but once I tried a burrito I was sold.

Maya L.

Yelp
This is the best food truck in Portland! The fried chicken is super moist on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside (without being greasy.) The pastor is bright and zesty. The burritos in general are HUGE! Pro tip: get half pastor, half fried chicken burrito. It's a game changer! Although the idea of a lime snickerdoodle cookie confused me it is extremely delicious. Pillowy soft on the inside just like a snickerdoodle should be! Josh is the best! He's always extremely friendly! The employee from NY is also wonderful! We used to eat here 2 days a week when we lived in Sellwood but moved away from Portland for a few years. Despite this Josh remembered my husband and I! Delightful experience always.
google avatar

Katharyn W.

Yelp
Unusual, delicious and friendly! I have loved Meddling Lime since first discovery. Their crispy rice dishes are so unusual and DEEPLY satisfying!!
google avatar

Ian Z.

Yelp
I'm trying to think why o shouldn't give 5 stars and the only thing I can come up with is they don't stay open late enough! :) The food is awesome, the guys are friendly, and the prices are good.
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
The Beet and avocado bowel was so good! I forgot to add the salsa until half way through. Great portion size. The service was friendly and quick. Here on a Tuesday afternoon!
google avatar

Jacob H.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing flavor in every dish. Without hesitation a 5 star food cart. That braised beef burrito is the best burrito I've ever had...
google avatar

Yelp
Bang! This was the best the best thing I ate over a weekend in Portland and Seattle. And as these are two great eating cities, that is saying something. Kudos to these folks for developing a dish I'd never had before: their crispy rice platform that I had with fried chicken on top. It was savory, tangy, fresh, and filling.

Charolette S.

Yelp
The crispy rice and fried chicken are amazing. The service was above and beyond. Will be returning, highly recommend.

Yelp
I've wanted to eat here for years but the timing was never right...until this past Wednesday. Since it was my first (of many more) visits, I chose to go with the original buritto with chicken ($10) From the first bite to the last lick of a finger, it was great! Tasty with a hint of something unexpectedly perfect. Next time I plan to try the Crispy Rice... hmmm wonder when I can make that happen? Hoping it's very soon.

Henry J.

Yelp
Great tacos with solid portions! Nice hosts and cooks who are accommodating with many gluten free and dairy free options. The blackened cod taco is a standout, as are the carnitas. The pastor isn't anything to write home about (the meat was tough, too lean honestly, and flavor/spices lacking compared to other places). The salsas are flavorful and fresh tasting. I liked the tacos a lot better than Por Que No as well as many places in far SW. There are plenty of outdoor picnic benches, but I imagine at lunch time it might fill up. Definitely planning to go again!

Yelp
Wanted a little treat this evening with the husband, so we ordered takeout from here. This has got to be some of the best PDX-Mex food I've had in a long time. Highly recommend the fried chicken taco- don't be scared by the jalapeño crema, it's super mild and such a great addition to the goodies on the taco. That fried chicken is heavenly too, so many flavors!! Was only able to grab a bite of the black bean taco, but it tasted fantastic. That avocado salsa is so tasty! We also enjoyed a bowl as a way to get a few more veggies into our system. The combo of that avocado salsa and radishes was DELISH. Two huge thumbs up for this place, we will for sure be back!!!

Katy M.

Yelp
The Meddling Lime is one of my all time favorite places to eat! It's great Mexican with an edge. I've had almost everything on the menu. Nothing disappoints! My very favorite is the crispy rice, usually with prawns, but I've had just about every topping option. For the quality of food, it's also very reasonably priced. The Meddling Lime easily deserves five stars plus!

Will s.

Yelp
The crazy rice is crazy good! Would 100% recommend getting it. The folks running the food truck were super nice and friendly. Would go back next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
This cart is located across the street from Unicorn brewing in the Smile cart pod in Sellwood, which is more of a micro-pod since it has only two carts in its entirety. For those avoiding wheat, the tacos have corn tortillas and any burrito can be made into a bowl. I got the Al Pastor bowl which was really good. I was asked whether or not I wanted to include the pineapple. I opted to keep the pineapple and it worked flavor-wise even with the salsa and everything. Also, I don't know what dairy products they use but the crema and cheese gave the bowl an amazing texture. They also have Topo Chico which is one of my favorite seltzers and can be hard to find compared to other more popular brands. The bowl was ready in five minutes. Next time, however, I would call ahead now that I know that's an option.

Merle W.

Yelp
The food is A+! I love this place. This our first time and we will be back whenever we are in the area. Fast and friendly service. This food truck will become an established restaurant. Also there's outdoor dining.Fish Taco with blackened cod was perfect!
google avatar

Allison S.

Yelp
One of my favorite meals in Portland! So hearty and filling, the crispy rice box with fried chicken is absolutely a must try!
google avatar

Todd H.

Yelp
They are not open late so be prepared to get there earlier than their neighbor. I have eaten at the other cart many times and this was the first time I had actually been to this cart when it was open. Now I know w why. Because they are selling out of food before people can get there. I am so sorry I didn't take pictures. My phone died as I was getting there. We ate there. It was a little chilly but the wind was blocked by their unique seating area construction All right the Crispy rice is to die for. I added the fried chicken which took it to an eleven but I don't know that it was necessary. So good so flavorful I almost didn't breathe I was eating enjoying and waiting for the next bite. It was a foodgasm. I mixed in the salsa for just a little kick and it was top notch. The kids quesadilla got rave reviews as it also was devoured in silence. The tacos were just as eagerly accepted and disposed of in a timely fashion by belly number three This was a Taco Tuesday run that found one of the best places to saddle up and get your feed bag on. Definitely making it into the weekly rotation. I'll be back for photos

Gj P.

Yelp
good quality food at affordable prices. They have adding more to menu since the early days. I always pick up food when seeing my dentist.

Philip G.

Yelp
Fabulous tacos! My wife and I enjoyed them so much that I returned the next day to purchased 4 more and their homemade taco chips and rice and beans. We tried the fish, chicken, and El Pastor tacos. All first rate.
google avatar

Theo T.

Yelp
Definitely worth a try if you want tacos and you're in the area! Decent amount of street parking around this pod. The star of the show was the fried chicken taco--scrumptious! The creamy sauce and tangy salsa combined really well with the crispy, savory fried chicken. My only regret is not ordering more of them.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the food choices on this stretch of Milwaukie Ave., today is a first at the Meddling Lime. Their main draw, Crispy Rice Salad with Fish, was excellent! I've enjoyed this growing popular dish at few places, but it's arguably the best here. Both the al pastor and chipotle and braised beef taco were good, but not overly memorable. Maybe I've been spoiled by the homemade corn and flour tortillas at Matt's Tacos. Love me some Mexican Coke, it's debatable if it tastes different than the U.S. version, but it's clear that Coca-Cola from a glass bottle is BETTER than from a can, liter, or fountain. It doesn't get too crowed here like at the pods in Downtown and parking hasn't been a problem. The owner was cool.

Paacraz H.

Yelp
I love the fresh delicious mexi-pnw flair! Portions are so fair and quality ingredients are definitely used. Excellent customer service and great energy from the staff. I had 3 tacos Al pastor, shrimp, and carnitas. They are fairly busy so call a head, they are honest letting you know you'll be waiting x amount of time depending on the orders ahead of you. This is a good cart, the tables are fairly clean, but parking is limited because they are situated in a dental office's parking lot. So don't park there when the dental office is open.
google avatar

Rod W.

Yelp
Dropped by on a whim. Never been. Tried their crispy rice braised verde chicken. Exceeded my expectations with what was put in that cardboard box. Great flavors with eggsceptional textures. You'll see. Will be back to explore something else.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
Delicious Mexican Food Cart They have a few flavors of tacos, burritos, pozole, and a few other items. Everything on the menu is great, full of flavor, and fresh. But the tacos are my go to. It's really amazing how dishes with so many flavors and ingredients are made in such a small space. Josh who runs this place is a cool and friendly guy. Really happy to have them in the Westmoreland neighborhood.

Yelp
5 STARS ALL THE WAY!! I have been following The Meddling Lime on Instagram for quite some time and just hadn't made my way there yet. We decided to give it a try after our flight back into Portland. We had the Chimichanga with Braised Beef and the Crispy Rice with Fried Chicken. WOW! Both of these items were so so delicious. The Chimichanga was perfectly fried and the fillings were still moist and the beef was beyond flavorful! The Crispy Rice was Tasty for sure. We took this one to go while we ate the Chimichanga under the covered area, it was chilly and rainy on our visit. The staff was kind and personable. I highly recommend giving this place a try. They even have vegan and vegetarian options.
google avatar

Holly T.

Yelp
Mexican Fried Rice! I could leave that there and be done with my review, but I'll ramble on anyway. The crispy rice is amazing. I wasn't quite sure what to expect when ordering it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Fried rice, fried chicken, and a fried egg on top of it too! (I didn't say it was healthy.) I think I read they can make it vegetarian so everyone can be happy. It was pretty unique. My kid got the braised beef burrito. He let me sneak a bite, and let me tell you, it was awesome sauce. Soo, soo good. Not sure which meal I liked better. My kid tried my crispy rice and suggested they make a crispy rice burrito. Yeah, that would be tasty. We also tried a fish taco and a fried chicken taco. They were pretty good too. But I'd recommend you try the crispy rice and braised beef burritos first.
google avatar

Yelp
Meddling Lime Tacos are the tonic, Semisonic comes in to your world Meddling Lime You don't have to go to Mexico, if you just eat here Meddling Lime Every new Burrito comes from Portland's Burrito Artisans
google avatar

Craig T.

Yelp
This place is absolutely delicious and the food is full of flavor. The vegetarian options are fantastic- cauliflower being my favorite! We had lived in the neighborhood for nearly a year before trying this place and now we are regulars and are working our way through the menu! The crispy rice and chimichanga are our favorite dishes!

Carl H.

Yelp
Rude staff, mediocre food, small quantity to price ratio, hope they get replaced... or stop stealing business from the far superior mexican restaurants that were in sellwood first.
