The Essential Portland Cocktail Bars Where You Can Sip Something Exceptional

"Belmont’s gothic-tinged Midnight quickly built up a faithful crowd due to its stylish interior, live music venue, and its agave and rum-focused cocktail menu developed by a team of industry veterans led by Estanislado Orona. In the Siren Serenade, Meletti adds a touch of dark intrigue to a blend of coconut-washed rum and pineapple. The Beso Muerte, or Death Kiss, is another favorite, a rum and white port cocktail with calendula cordial. Mestizo handles the food here, so expect snacks like vegan empanadas and yuca fries." - Alex Frane, Eater Staff

Portland’s Most Anticipated Restaurant, Bar, and Pod Openings, Spring 2021 - Eater Portland

"Portland has seen fewer bar openings in recent months, compared to restaurants or carts, but the opening of Bar Midnight should be big. Estanislado Orona, who worked at bars like Raven and Rose and Botanist House, is focusing on aromatic cocktails leaning heavily on fortified and sparkling wines. The cocktail that caught our attention, for instance, blends rosé, vermouth, and white port with rose petals, rhubarb, and cardamom. The bar will take over the former Liquor Store space, with outdoor seating and takeout cocktails." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

A Sultry, Wine-Centric Cocktail Bar Will Open on SE Belmont This Year - Eater Portland

"Bar Midnight, from Portland hard-hitter Estanislado Orona, will incorporate spirits and spices with fortified and aromatized wines like vermouth and sherry. The bar will feature Orona’s style of high-end, botanical and floral cocktails amid dark, romantic vibes and vegetarian tapas. Orona — an alum of places like Raven and Rose, Botanist, and Nomad.PDX’s Ash Bar — is joined by his friend Martin Kraenkel. Bar Midnight will retain the horseshoe-shaped bar from the Liquor Store and will offer a menu of original cocktails, many of which include wines and liqueurs like vermouth, sherry, amari, and port. The venue aims to open with limited outdoor seating and a takeout menu for food and cocktails, with interior aesthetics described as 'sexy, approachable environment' with black wood, black and gold wallpaper, and velvet." - Alex Frane

16 Portland Restaurants and Bars With Live Music - Eater Portland

"As the bar’s website clearly indicates, this is “not a real liquor store.” Despite the mix-up on Google Maps, this ultra-hip spot on the crowded corner of SE Belmont and 34th does dish out solid cocktails ($4 daily from 5-7). The basement below houses regular DJ sets and live tunes, often for a cover under $10 or no fee at all." - Cooper Green

I like the dark vibe inside. There is outdoor seating as well which is nice for summer. Great service. We sat at the bar and the bartender was attentive and checked in on us. The espresso martini is so good its dangerous. I could definitely drink a few (which no one should do). Their whiskey sour (egg white of course) was also fantastic

Stepped into The Midnight and was immediately captivated. This open-air goth bar manages to strike that perfect balance of elegance and dark allure. The decor is stunning, with a sophisticated twist that sets it apart. What truly impressed me was the thoughtful curation of their wine selection – clearly, they cater to discerning tastes. And the DJ? Absolutely brilliant. They spun a vibe that had you nodding your head and tapping your feet, completely immersing you in the atmosphere without ever overpowering conversation. It was the ideal backdrop for a night out. But the real magic unfolded downstairs. The basement at The Midnight is an intimate haven for live music. It's the kind of space where you can truly connect with the bands and rock out to your heart's content. Whether you're there for the refined drinks and sophisticated ambiance upstairs or the raw energy of the live music below, The Midnight offers a uniquely compelling experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something beyond the ordinary.

This was a fun bar to go to for drinks in the evening. they also have a club in the basement for live bands. We enjoyed the ambience and it was very lively on a Friday night.

Not going to lie, I wanted to like this place SO BADLY because of the cute vibe and location so I came several times to keep giving it chances. My biggest gripe is that I found that the cocktails to be extremely lacking. They had multiple tiki drinks on the menu and each I tried was worse than the last-- just really bitter, unbalanced, and poorly executed in general. I AM picky about tiki and know those drinks are hard to make well but there a few casual non-tiki bars on Belmont that can pull them off, so it is possible. The service is good, staff is friendly, and the vibe is good but not great. The events seem to be lacking, poorly advertised and communicated. I went to a couple that were just dead or cancelled without notice. Further, unless every other bar on Belmont is packed, it's usually pretty quiet and empty. If you want to come here, bring a couple friends to fill the air and stick to shots or beers.

Google
This neighborhood bar is a dimly lit, unassuming gem that has some of the most exquisitely crafted cocktails in the entire city. The bartenders are professional and have honed their craft to a supreme level. Check out the nightly events they have in their downstairs venue, The Six. Great date spot and super fun neighborhood hang.

Google
Loooove this new bar! It's perfectly dark & moody. The cocktails were delicious and the food from Mestizo was wonderful. The owner and the bartender were also very nice and welcoming.

Love this place. My friend and I had the best cocktails. Aesthetics are dark and classy. Owner is amazing. Will be back!

Google
Great small music venue with surprisingly high quality acoustics. The drinks were well made and the staff were kind and helpful. Both the bar and music venue had an intriguing and cozy, scaled-up noir atmosphere.

Yelp
Great craft cocktails with a dark/spooky ambience. Bartender upstairs was so kind and accommodating to make my husband a seasonal drink that wasn't currently on the menu. The bartender downstairs was kind of a grumpus with a chip on her shoulder. She was also limited on what she could mix and serve which I understand but still seemed inconvenienced to be bartending.

Yelp
Although this spot looks like a dive bar from the outside, the inside couldn't be further from one! Gothic and dark themed, the inside is such a stark contrast to the bustling street outside. Although completely painted in black, the inside was still open with high ceiling and circular bar in the center. Lots of drinks on the menu, all of which were very enticing. I enjoyed my Pink Nectar that had an interesting array of ingredients in it. The volume was a bit loud eventhough there weren't a lot of people. I think they use the space as a music veneue too.

Yelp
Gorgeous space, gorgeous drinks and gorgeous bartenders... I hadn't been out to a bar in eons and I am glad that this was my reintroduction. I didn't want to peruse the menu - you know those days where a menu just seems complicated? So I negotiated a blackberry kamikaze with the bartender/owner. It was perfection and served in a gorgeous glass. My second one was made by a different bartender and also glorious! I really have to made a note to thank them for having shelving filled with thoughtful things... It is different but adds a dark coziness I personally found refreshing. Restaurants and bars seems so very cold with their temporary looking art work where this space genuinely looks and feels like someone thought about it. The crowd within was delightfully diverse which also speaks highly of the space since everyone was in great spirits. A gal was walking by me and accidentally dumped her glass of wine on me before complimenting my outfit - hay, respect - she was genuinely very sweet and I am a huge klutz so no judgement. The music was wonderful but even better when the DJ set up shop playing a great set in his kitty sweater bad assness. I've heard tell that there are other acts and stuff here and there performing and that there is additional space to it. Also, their food looks great so I look forward to venturing there again.

Yelp
We came in to meet some friends for Happy Hour, the last time we were here was what was called the Liquor Store. The cocktail menu was one of the most creative I have seen in a while. Drink prices are very reasonable and not inflated which is nice currently due to prices increasing for everything. The Midnight Oil and Fernet and Cola were my favorite drinks. I was surprised the menu was vegan/vegetarian as I usually like some meaty snacks but the food was very good. The sweet corn empanadas were amazing, I could eat several of them and be very satisfied. The venue is dark yet warm and comfortable to hang out in. They also still have the music venue downstairs, which I have not seen any performances there yet. The staff was amazing and really made our visit too notch. Friendly, courteous and made you feel welcome. I will definitely be back I really want to try more of their cocktail menu.

Yelp
Stopped in because the bar across the street we originally wanted to go to wasn't open for another 30 mins. Vibe was very dark and gothic like. Really cool spot and the drinks were yummy but the drink I ordered on the menu was $13 and when I got the bill, they charged me $14 for it.

Yelp
Service was fast and attentive at the bar. Drinks were spicy, fresh, and vibrant. My friend and I had the Siren Serenade and it was such a fresh taste. The rock and roll vibes reminded us of Guitar Hero, and the red lighting, textured walls, and magnificent feature wall invited the wandering eye. Definitely a biker bar with style!

Yelp
Came in for a quick drink because we were in the area and it was so dark and moody, in the best way! I almost wish that I had found this place in October, because the vibe is very gothic and Halloween-esk. The bar tenders were super nice and attentive. Didn't get a chance to try any of their signature cocktails, but I will say they can make the basics because I had a cosmo and it was great! I would love to come back and try out more things from their menu. This place was cute and fun and I look forward to returning!

Yelp
Was visiting friends for the weekend and they took me here. It was so fun! They had a free ice luge and a fun band playing in the basement. It gives spooky vampire vibes in there

Yelp
I swore I left a review a long time ago! This is hands down my favorite bar in PDX for a craft cocktail. The menu rotates frequently with exciting new takes on some classics and a great selection of spirit forward choices too! Want something Tiki inspired or have a question about exotic rum... just ask! They also have a venue in the basement for live shows! It's the perfect place to be left alone and have a great drink and it's also the best place to bring a friend and meet someone new. The service is attentive, thoughtful and welcome without pandering to anyone.

Yelp
Finally, a bar I can love...too bad I am not really a big drinker. The decor here is gorgeous, someone who clearly knows how do a sophisticated interior, instead of lot of the down home style stuff you usually see in Portland. The music was really good the night we were there. The bartenders were extremely nice, and the food was excellent. It's a little pricey, but everything is nowadays. That's just how it's going to be for a while, and at least this place makes it worth it.

Yelp
After dinner we grabbed a cocktails. I had been wanting to check this place out. The place did not disappoint dark and moody which is my vibe. I looked over the menu and wasn't sure what to get so I asked the bartender what I should order and he suggested the Siren Serenade. We definitely enjoyed the bar.

Yelp
First time there NEVER coming back. $6 for a Rainier and $4 for a coke. The bathroom was BROKEN! I have half a mind to report the place to the health department. Broken sink in the bathroom is not a god sign. NEVER going back. DON'T eat the food if they can't maintain the bathrooms!

Yelp
We stopped in for a couple drinks. The space is super cool. Dark, moody, with a centralized bar. Prices were reasonable. Buddy and I got an $8 beer and a shot combo. We all split the chips and guac. Definitely a fun bar spot. The chips and quac were great! Chips were definitely a stand out. A fun stop for a night cap. We loved the ambiance. This was dark and gothic yet warm and inviting. Word on the street is they have great cocktails. We will be back to give them a try!

Yelp
Friendly service, great decor and ambience, empanada flavor was good but dough much too hard, tostones tasted like biting into a mummy, still a nice evening spot for a cocktail.

Yelp
Bartenders are very friendly and accommodating. Incredible drink list. I got a banana something or other drink and it was very good. Highly recommend checking this place out.

Yelp
What a fabulous place. We got to try it on a Tuesday evening. Our drinks were perfect. We got to meet Martin, one of the owners. Food and drinks both were absolutely delicious. We got Bananas and Blow (drink) from their menu along with Rose Cider and some Vegan Yuca, and Empanadas. Oh so so good. If you haven't tried them yet, please go. Check them out. They are new and they know what they are doing with their food and drinks. Thank you Midnight PDX for a great evening

Yelp
High-quality drinks from high-quality people. The Midnight quickly became our go to weekend stop for a drink or two, and our favorite spot to take friends and family. Amazingly well-thought-out cocktails, a strong taplist, and a list of numerous mocktails, they've got something for everyone looking for a delicious drink. When it comes to food, their vegan latin american inspired offerings from Mestiza hit the spot every time. The Midnight is a Rock & Roll bar, so expect dim lighting, dark furniture and good music. The space is very well taken care of and the owners attention to detail shows through. Friday nights they have a guest DJ spinning new wave, dark wave and goth. Every second to last Sunday of the month, they host local vendors and artists at their Midnight Market. They also have a music venue downstairs, The Six. The Midnight is run by welcoming and genuine people. They've always made sure that we were comfortable and well taken care of. To have us as a regular, you need to have the offerings, but also the people, and The Midnight has both in spades.

Cristal M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, and absolutely amazing staff. Had our staff party here and it was the perfect night, it was great to have a small taste of normalcy. Brie, Estanislado, Martin and Zack were the staff there that night and they did great at making us all feel welcome and taken care of. Drinks were amazing, food was great. 10/10 recommend and will definitely be back.

Janet N.

Yelp
Warm and inviting. We're from out of town and they made us feel like locals. The mushroom empanada is gourmet. I have not been able to have an empanada for decades because of a gluten allergy but they make theirs with corn. Delicious and beautiful. The bartender selected a perfect dry rose and gave a generous pour. The decor and the lighting all well done. We saw a really good Portland band, The Vagilantes! ( on Spotify) A great evening in a cool city.

Yelp
The bartender in the basement took my drivers license and wouldn't give it back! I told her it was real but she yelled in my face and said I could call the police if it was actually real. I tried to get it back, but she said I would need to arrange that with the police. She then said "look at all these people you're holding up now," because there was a line behind me. I stepped to the side. She then came out from behind the bar, grabbed me, physically turned me around and pushed me upstairs and out the door. She had never told me to leave and this really shocked me to be touched by her, especially because she came from behind me. I called my family and got my BIRTH CERTIFICATE (lol) and brought it back to show her and get my license back. She gave it back, but claimed it was a weird looking one because it didn't have the shiny "Oregon" behind the picture. It clearly had this exact marking, I could even see it in the dark. She proceeded to yell at my mother about how my ID did not have this marking. We left after that. I understand that bars have to be careful about fake IDs, but the way she disrespected me and confiscated it, physically forced me out and yelled at my mother were not appreciated! I also had prepaid for the show ticket for tonight; what a waste. Not going to lie I'm quite shook up by this and feel a bit traumatized from the whole thing.
