Portland’s Top Food Carts for Vegan Dining

"This vegan fried chicken cart specializes in satisfyingly meaty “chicken” coated in a well-seasoned batter. Best devoured at BG’s Food Cartel so the fried exterior retains its delectable crunch, the faux chicken arrives with buffalo sauce, blue cheese, and a side of macaroni salad for the ultimate comfort food meal. There’s also a kids’ menu of chicken nuggets and grilled cheese. Although the sandwiches are what started it all, The Mocking Bird serves burritos and chicken and waffles, as well as breakfast items with vegan sunny-side eggs with a runny yolk." - Waz Wu

This food is effin' yummy! We tried the BLT, Mac n cheese, motz sticks, fries & nuggets! Was soooo good and Ethan has amazing customer service! Wish we had a place like this in Albany food court! I would eat there often! Worth the drive!

Google
Super yummy!!! Me & the gf got a burger, bbq chicken & tots, and they were the best plant based burger and chicken sandwich we’ve had yet. That’s remarkable because we live in Austin where there’s a high concentration of vegan restaurants, and this even tops our neighborhood favorite Project Pollo (which we love!). Will definitely be coming back here when we visit our family in west Portland — yep, we’ll make the trip to lovely Beaverton. Also this food truck park rocks— there are over a dozen varied food truck options that will please a crowd or family, with an extensive bar and spacious & nice yard area.

Stopped here for a quick bite to eat and was not disappointed! I had the Mac Daddy with a side of macaroni salad and it was delicious. The sandwich was just the perfect amount of spicy, and the mac salad was a satisfying accompaniment. Portions were large and the cashier was very friendly and efficient!

Google
The vegan Grilled Cheese sandwich was delicious. I wanted to add the cup of tomato soup that was on the menu but they were out of it. It would have been the perfect accompaniment on such a cold day. The large slices of sourdough bread were crisp and warm from the grill. A nicely filling lunch.

Google
Hands down one of the best places to eat in Oregon. Finally a place that offer fire vegan food. Ethan has been at this location when I go and he always uses my name and knows what I want, 5 stars is for the customer service- Be back soon 🤙

Google
The chicken is not bad, but honestly some of the greasiest salty food I've ever had. You can have fried food and not have it dripping , I left the sandwich on it's side and had a puddle of grease leak from it (you can see where I did that in this picture, I then picked it up and placed it on the lid and you can see the excess it still had). The tots and fries are inedible they are so salty. The mac and cheese has a bitter not good taste. The "bacon" basically disintegrates as soon as you bite it, no chew or flavor at all. The staff is friendly and very nice so I hate to be negative but I swear we as a whole need to stop 5 star rating average establishments. Edit: Btw, I have given this place multiple chances but no more. Too expensive to only eat half and toss the rest.

Google
Super tasty alternative to fried chicken. I've tried the buffalo and the ranch...I think I prefer the buffalo, since flavor of the mock chicken has cumin-powdered garlic aftertaste. Tots are awesome, not sure I like the mac salad. We'll be back!

Google
The food cart does not make it clear that their food is 100% vegan. I found out after tasting their mac and cheese. The mac and cheese tasted like cardboard buffalo style. After visiting their website to see what others said about the mac and cheese, I learned the place was vegan. I revisited the food cart and saw in very small text under the sign it says “EGAN” (yes, egan, the v fell off.) and under the actual menu no where does it say the word vegan. I now realize the irony of “the mocking bird”, but I don’t think I need to do an analysis of a restaurant name when they’re advertising chicken. As someone who is not vegan, I was unaware that Chick’n is a meat substitute, and I now know because of this terrible experience. The fact that this is vegan needs to be advertised more. Also, I have eaten vegan food from friends before and it did not taste unpleasant like the mocking bird.

Yelp
I'm not vegan so I was pleasantly surprised to find that these items actually come pretty close to their non-vegan counterparts. They were absolutely delicious & flavorful. The person running the cart was very kind to take our orders so close to their closing time. The Yelp and Google hours reflect different hours for the winter. Heads-up if you are visiting during winter, they close at 7pm, not 8. I'll be back to try their Mac & cheese.

Yelp
YUCK. I've officially had my last meal at Mockingbird. The chicken was greasy but the tofu in my "breakfast" sandwich was SO uncooked that it was floppy and falling apart. I got stained hands from the turmeric on it. The tots were meh. The jojo's (which my mom had,) were undercooked as well. It was all around MEH. So incredibly disappointed but I won't be spending any more money there. The service was fine. No complaints. Food ready when promised just not good. However Rose Biggi food carts have a great vibe. Super fun, lots of space, shaded, indoor, bar space and indoor clean restrooms which AREN'T portapotties. Bye bye bye birdie.

Yelp
Meaty vegan burgers - best in PDX and always stop by the food cart whenever I fly to Portland and visit family in Beaverton! The menu has gotten a simpler and easier to read over the years. The MAC Daddy is a delicious sloppy joe while the BBQ Bakun delivers! Have your wet wipes ready! Mac Daddy's hearty Chik'n patty is bursting with flavor sandwiched between a warm pretzel bun and a heap of cashew mac and cheese delightfully spilling out. While it seems like an odd pairing, the flavors blend well together and tickle my taste buds. The BBQ Bakun with a crispy Chik'n patty smothered in bbq sauce, a thick slice of mock-meat bakun and pickles is a delightfully hearty meal! The heaping side of rosemary mac salad is surprisingly tasty reheated. It pairs well with the mac and cheese, great complementary flavors. Lots of mac for leftovers! Next time I'll try the more classic and simple #1 Original Chick-not with just lettuce, tomato, mayo and hold the mac and cheese. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
In the name of science, I am trying their different locations and doing a combined review. First, how was it? Very good! All vegan and vegetarian. Group favorites: Ham breakfast sando - that was yummy. And comes with first-rate tots!!! BBQ chic'n sandwich - flavorful and good! Monte cristo- ham, cheeze, mustard, and jam ( yup, I said jam) on cinnamon bread. Weird but I liked it. Or try the ham and Cheese which is similar but no jam, also interesting. OG chikn sandwich - nice, pretty mellow. Would I go back? Oh Yeah!
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
These guys serve up tasty, vegan chikn sandwiches. I think if I were actually vegan, I'd make this one of my regular spots. But I'm not, and I still missed actual chicken. But if you're looking for something worth your hard-earned dollar, give this place a try.

Yelp
Staff is really nice and food was great. I loved the mac n cheese and the breakfast sandwich was spot on. For those leaving negative reviews saying I didn't know it was vegan. Pull your head out of your ass and pay more attention to where and what you are ordering. Leaving a negative review because you're too stupid to know what you're ordering says more about you than this food cart.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty good chikin bbq burger I liked the fries, I just thought the Cajun was a bit spicy The service is friendly and fast, The ambiance is amazing it's a food truck spot, amazing! Will return soon.

Yelp
I was so excited when I realized that I could get a vegan Mac and cheese with other fun Vegan items. No, I'm not vegan. However I am lactose intolerant and have enjoyed the versatile dishes veganism has to offer. The mockingbird is a straight home run! You can't go wrong here. Even, try the Mac salad ( so good!) Service is friendly and always helpful. It is located in the Rose Biggie food truck, so there are tables around for you to sit and dine. Establishment always seems clean and up to standard and I have never gotten sick. Everything seems deliciously fresh and crisply fried to perfection. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Unfortunately this place went from amazing to I'm wondering if they want to go out of business. When we first came here the sandwiches were delicious, crispy, the fries and tots were perfectly done. Seriously it was dream food. Then we ran into the problem that we never knew when it would be open (during regular business hours). It became a running joke of "We'll get it if it's open!" rather than a negative thing as we understand life happens. Then someone was hired that started turning people away because "They already had too many customers." We thought maybe they were just new and overwhelmed? Well that wasn't the case, this person does it all the time. We thought we would give it one last chance yesterday and it got worse. The buns were cheap grocery store ones and the fake chicken tenders were ones you pick up at the grocery store for $6 a bag. They were air fried. If I wanted that meal I would make it at home myself, not spend $15 a plate. Also, that same person was turning people away and actively discouraging people from buying the food. Don't know if it was because they only had grocery store items. Who knows? We were just told it was chicken tenders, not something completely different from their usual level of food. Wouldn't recommend anymore. Hopefully they get better again, for now I feel with not feeling good after that food....

Yelp
I have had the Jalapeño pepper crusted burger three times now! The first time I freaked out that I was eating real burger not Vegan burger. I read the website twice! There is something about the combination of the Pretzel bun, Jalapeño crusted burger, melted cheese and the chipotle mayo that makes this soooo good! I also get a really good vibe from this place. So us Vegans all a favor and patron this place and thank them for their lip smacking good work!

Yelp
Not a vegan fan. However this is a popular cart in BG pod area. Got chickin Bakun ranch. It was filling and good. BG food cart area has something for all. Enjoy dining

Yelp
I think this place is very good. I love their curly fries. The sandwich's are a large portion and the chicken replacement they use is very tasty.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered an OG burger with tots & BBQ Bakon Chick'n Sando with fries. Tots & fries were a bit too salty for me. Nonetheless, both were super delicious.

Yelp
An interesting take on the Fried Chicken Sandwich. The BG Food Cartel location is already one of my favorite food cart locations with its laid back atmosphere, lawn space, bar, cleanliness, and decent selection of food carts. I'll start by saying that I'm not exactly well versed when it comes to vegan meat alternatives. My wife and I both got the Double, which definitely packs a visual impact. The Mac and Cheese is amazing and honestly my favorite part. The Chick'n is pretty good, it has a decent crunch but the inside texture is different? A combination of spongy and stringy. The flavor was also ok, but left an interesting aftertaste. Like I said I'm not familiar with this so I have very little to compare to, and perhaps this was better than others.
google avatar

Janice K.

Yelp
The staff is friendly , knowledgeable and helpful. I will say I got my kids the vegan Mac and cheese and I thought it was tasty BUT it's not a kids flavor. It was a little spicy and tasted a little bit like a burrito. I do recommend this place though cause the food was quality.
google avatar

Yelp
I loveeeee this place and come here often for wings. Today I decided to switch it up and got a sandwich to go. When I got home 30 minutes later, I noticed mold on the bun... and it was too hot and far to drive back. I'll stick with wings!
google avatar

Yelp
We went here twice in three days! The fried chick'n here is so juicy and crispy! Some insights from our trips: Buffalo chick'n sandwich - incredibly good! Ask for the buffalo sauce on the side so you can control the how much sauce is on the sandwich and how messy the sandwich is. Plus, you get a dipping sauce if you opt for the tots or fries. Fried mozzarella sticks - don't skip these! If you're like me and haven't been able to have a real mozzarella stick in years, these will fill the cheese stick shaped hole in your heart. Jalapeño grilled cheese - I need to try recreating this at home. Chick'n bac'n ranch sando - my partner said this was his favorite thing he ate there over the two times we went. Our friends really enjoyed the Monte Cristo and the jalapeño burger.

Yelp
Lately, I've been dropping by the Food Cartel for lunch on Sundays. On this day, I wasn't sure what I wanted to try, so I pulled out my trusty Yelp and started looking at pictures of the food options. Well the fried chick'n here looked really good. I ordered the Buffalo sandwich and some waffle fries. The person at the counter was friendly and courteous. I got my food and go grab a beer. The waffle fries were amazing for a surprising (to me) reason - they were not strongly seasoned or even very crisp - but they tasted of potato! I love it when simple things are done well. And, sitting there, I realized that most French fries taste of something else and not potato. Anyway - well done! I was mostly done with my fries before I started on the sandwich. The bun was good and the toppings were simple, which allowed the crispy chick'n to be the star of the show. I was about 2/3 through with the sandwich, when it struck me - MOCKing bird - this was not chicken! So, I am not an expert on vegan or vegetarian options out there, but this was just a really good sandwich and fries!
google avatar

Jessie R.

Yelp
Husband and I are vegetarians and always looking for yummy vegan food when we eat out. Gave this place a try and was a little disappointed. I'll start with the positive, the fries were thick and crisp-delicious. The wings were good but the sauce was a little blah. The sandwiches were okay, not amazing. The bacon on the sandwiches was too crispy, like hard to chew crispy. The mac & cheese was disgusting. So, to recap come for the fries and wings but everything else is mah to gross.
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
Meh. I've been vegetarian for most of my life. I think I may just not be the right audience. I just don't really love faux meat. I got the fake fried chicken sandwich. The texture was good, but the flavor was odd. Won't be back, but that's no their fault it's just not my thing.

Nichole D.

Yelp
I eat here often because it's the only vegan truck at BGs cartel. One of my faves is the jalapeño pepper crusted burger. Today I had the best burger I've had from here. Sometimes the patty falls apart easily or it's covered in too much sauce. The girl working today (I'm sad I didn't get her name) cooked the perfect burger. It was seasoned well the patty stayed in tact through the whole burger and the sauce was perfect. I am so sad to see you guys go but so happy I had such a wonderful experience

Yelp
Friendly service, great food. Highly recourse BLT. Food cart near shaded seating. Nice to have a place that does all vegan food reliably.

Ricks G.

Yelp
One of the best vegan places in the city. I wish they had more locations. Amazing vegan comfort food.
google avatar

Yelp
Was super excited to find a vegan food cart, especially a fried chken one. First, I could tell they're very unorganized. It took 25 minutes just to get my chken sangwich. And cashier went back and forth to preparing food to managing the cash register. My take on it: heavy breaded, some parts were super mushy, good flavor, $1 extra for tater tots which were inedible because they were so salty. My bill was $13.50-outrageous and overpriced. Unfortunately, I won't try again.

Alan R.

Yelp
I want to give more stars but the chicken was not crispy at all. The mac salad was good but the chicken sandwich was poorly cooked and made me nervous it was not cooked fully. I think if the chicken was cooked to crispy I could have looked past the mediocre ingredients and given a better review.
google avatar

Gabi K.

Yelp
Overall: HIGHLY RECOMMEND for all my vegan AND non-vegan friends. Was absolutely delicious! Amazing comfort food. Atmosphere: This food truck is currently located in the BG food cartel area. Food: All sandwiches that you order come with a side of Mac salad that was delicious! Had fresh dill in there, and of course, was vegan. The first sandwich we got was the Mac Daddy and it was LOADED with Mac n cheese! It was absolutely delicious! The imitation meat patty, was crispy and tasted just like a regular chicken patty. Everything was seasoned really well. The other burger we tried was the Bakon ranch chick'n sandwich and that was also very tasty. The Bakon was crispy and added great flavor to overall sandwich. Would recommend both and will definitely be coming back! Service: Really good service. The gentleman that helped us was friendly, welcoming, and patient with us. He was engaging and answered any questions we had. Keep it up!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a while but everytime I go it was closed! So very happy I was able to try it today. The chicken was crispy, nicely battered. The texture was great, I'm assuming vital wheat gluten? Hand mixing was well done, you can see in the bite (for all you vegan cooks out there). Every bite was delicious except the last few bites were a bit doughy and chewy? But their dill sauce is excellent! Nice to have green leaf lettuce, tomato, and pickles to round out the "fat" Bacon had good flavor and nice addition to the sandwich, very subtle though in bacon flavor, but definitely can tell it was in there...had little smokiness. It was crispy, thin cut. Their Mac salad was ok, had small bits of chopped cucumber? But very mild in flavor, just veganaise/mayo-y no frill, no trill.
google avatar

Johnny N.

Yelp
Is vegan food worth the hype? Places like blossoming lotus, the sudra, van hanh continue to push the boundaries and texture of soy or fruit based protein (jackfruit bbq pork? Glutinous rice and tofu skin pressed layered and processed to have the texture of ribs? Mushroom jerky?). Well you can count one thing and that's throwing out the guilt and calorie counting cuz it doesn't matter! This crispy fried chicken sando is extra crispy and extra tasty. The only downside behind the flakey breading is that the vegan protein is very thin. The juicy meatiness is absent. This sando paired with tots is a fried foodie lovers paradise but it lacks memories of juicy chicken (insert brined chicken breast in hurrrr). Lots on the menu to try. The brick n mortar is opening up soon so be on the look out.

Karishma A.

Yelp
I got the special - bbq waffle friend with bacon bits! The portion was quite large and I really liked the sauces. Personally because there are so many things to try out at the food pod I would have liked if I could order half portion of it. It's quite heavy.
google avatar

Ameer W.

Yelp
Really wanted to give this place a shot since I knew some people who recommended it. I ordered the Mac Daddy with a side of fries...terrible! The chicken tasted like it had freezer burn and was refried to get the crispness. I couldn't force myself to eat it even though i spent about $17.00 on it. The Mac and cheese was cold, didn't have much flavor, and looked ancient. On the bright side, the fries were good and so was sauce on the sandwich, but that's it! Not worth giving a second shot.

Jolene G.

Yelp
I spent $35 for two chicken sandwiches that were inedible. That price was for two sandwiches without a drink. The sandwich I had was all breading. It was disgusting. Additionally, the servers were not friendly and seemed more interested in gossiping than helping customers.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best places to eat in Oregon. Finally a place that offer fire vegan food. Ethan has been at this location when I go and he always uses my name and knows what I want, 5 stars is for the customer service- Be back soon
google avatar

Allen S.

Yelp
This place is smack down in the middle of BG's food carts. Unfortunately, There is no clear sign that says this place is vegan. The people working also make no effort to express that it is. So I came up and ordered a "chicken bacon sandwich", and asked if this sandwich is fried chicken or grilled, then asked about another sandwich.. I got the food and I was confused on why the Mac and Cheese that came with the food looked like it was mixed with milky fluid. Brought it back up to the front and asked what was up with it and she said well it doesn't have cheese so it's not actually Mac and cheese... I asked them if they felt like it was false advertisement, and then continued to say, well the chicken isn't chicken either.... How would ANYONE know this.... ?! I did my best to give it a shot, but It was inedible. The only reason I am not leaving a 1 star is after coming back up the third time she was like, do you want a refund dude? It wasn't about the money, it was about the principle. Any sort of sign or label on the menu would have gone a long way.
google avatar

Bob R.

Yelp
This is a review by a vegetarian Pricey. Veggie chicken is slightly better than store bought. BBQ sauce is Bulls Eye equivalent. Bakon is salty cracker. Bun was well prepped. Friend tried the macaroni salad and it didn't sit well. Not returning
google avatar

Julie H.

Yelp
We found ourselves at the BG Food Cartel food truck pod right at lunch time. My husband and I were both excited to find The Mockingbird truck. While he's vegetarian and I generally am not, I DO love a good vegetarian fried chicken. The menu was fun, vegan, and boasted a number of sandwich options. We decided to share the Mac Daddy sandwich (with sides of mac and cheese and the mac salad). The sandwich featured a vegan chipotle mayo, original chick'n, pickles, plus cashew mac and cheese. Everything was absolutely DELICIOUS. I could eat this same thing every single day, happily. Being from Hawai'i, where mac salad often accompanies a good plate lunch, I am very particular about my mac salad... this one was incredibly tasty! We were tempted to go back to the same food trucks the following day to get the same meal. Our schedule didn't leave time for that, but next time we're in Beaverton, I damn sure will be returning!
google avatar

Roman S.

Yelp
Tried their BBQ sandwich. It's a solid choice but, given the other options at the carts it's on the spendy side for what's available. Doesn't really taste like chicken, but it's a good alternative. If you're vegan I'm sure this will be a top choice at BGs

Maia L.

Yelp
These are the greatest chicken sandwiches! The fries are also amazing. They might be the best part! Suuuper good plain or Cajun seasoned. I haven't tried the other sandwiches because I sadly don't live very nearby and I just crave the chicken sandwich too much. But someday I will and I've heard the cubano is potentially even better. I may never know but I hope to.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
It. Tastes. Like. Chicken. Seriously. Amazing. The Mac Daddy is the best. The chick'n sandwich covered in their amazing Mac and Cheese with their tasty Mac salad on the side. The only negative? You'll need a nap afterwards. But only after you finish every last bite and scrape the plate/container for every last morsel of the sauce. I should try something else - and I have. The chick'n nuggets are good. But the Mac Daddy offers the best sampling of their greatest hits. Time to try the BaKon ranch Chick'n sandwich or the BBQ BaKon sando.... With their chick'n at the base - it all has to be good. Now stop reading reviews and go eat. Go!
google avatar

Trisha M.

Yelp
A dedicated vegan cart with a gluten free option in downtown Beaverton? You have my heart. The burger and tots were great, but the saltiness of the patty was over the top. We'll definitely be back to try again though!

Tausha C.

Yelp
SOOO good! Hands down, the best vegan 'fried chicken' I've ever had! The flavor and texture was incredibly delicious. Vegan meats are hard to perfect, but the crispness and flavor for their fried chicken, is some of the best out there. The 'bacon' isn't my favorite, but it pairs together nicely on the sandwich.

Nick G.

Yelp
Food is ok. This place is randomly closed all the time. I stopped by two times this week and nobody is there. ????????????????
google avatar

Sd H.

Yelp
Not wanting to fault this place. Nothing wrong with the service or anything. I got the classic chick'n, and the flavoring, etc. was fine. It's just the texture of their vegetarian chicken - it's spongy and mushy. Pretty far removed from chicken. Reminds me of the texture of seitan (made from wheat). Just not my thing. Anyway, I wish them the best and hope they can find a better chicken substitute. Clearly I'm in the minority when it comes to my review.
google avatar

Aaron G.

Yelp
I'm trying out a pescatarian diet this month, but had a particularly strong craving for fried chicken last week so I ended up eating at The MOCKing Bird. They offer vegan fried chicken sandwiches (made with a wheat protein called seitan) and vegan mac and cheese (made with cashew nut cheese). It wasn't quite like the real thing, but it was really good. I had their Mac Daddy sandwich which includes the mac and cheese on the sandwich. The "chicken" was nicely breaded and had a decent texture and the mac and cheese was incredible. Seitan can't replace a good piece of chicken for me, but that cashew nut cheese based mac was better than a lot of dairy-based mac and cheeses I've had. Overall I give The MOCKing Bird a 5 based on the rounded up average of the following: Food - 4.5 Service - 4.5 Atmosphere/comfort - 5 (The Beaverton food carts are a solid place to enjoy a meal) Value - 4

Yelp
After we ordered our sandwiches my first thought was: OMG THIS IS HUGE. After I tried it my first thought was: HOW IS THIS VEGAN??? I turned to my friend and said "ummm I hate to tell you this, but this can't possibly be vegan!" But it is. And it's so flipping good. Guys, I'm not vegan. But when you're with your vegan friend you try new things because that stuff matters to people. And let me tell you, this sandwich is something I dream about. It's so so so perfectly crsipy and crunchy on the outside. The bun is so perfectly toasted. The pickles and the sauce and my goodness, just how!? I don't like buffalo sauce, but if you do, my friend says that sandwich is also drool worthy. So whether you're vegan or not, you should check out this spot. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Camrie C.

Yelp
Amazing! So flavorful and filling definitely coming back to try to other options ! Cool was very nice as well, definitely easy to talk to. Cart looked super clean.
google avatar

Elmo X.

Yelp
Save your money. Vegan food can be good but these kids just make disappointment. It tastes like greasy fast food. I wish the only vegan food cart at BGs was amazing but unless you have low standards then your money is better spent else where.
google avatar

Emil L.

Yelp
I got the bacon chicken ranch sandwich! So good! Everything vegan but you really can't tell!

Jacob S.

Yelp
I like vegan restaurants, and this one did not disappoint. I ordered the Buffalo Sando, and it was just the right amount of spicy. The "chicken" was nice and crispy, and the fries, while unusually shaped, were also pretty good. This is kind of a "street style" take on vegan food. It's so awesome to have so many different vegan options!
