The Modern Butcher

First time finally making it to The Modern Butcher while working in Beverly — & wow, did I pick the right day. Today’s sandwich special was smoked turkey & ham with jalapeño popper spread, chipotle mayo, red onion, shredded lettuce, then potato chip crumble on bacon-fat-toasted sourdough. Absolute perfection. 🤤 Also grabbed a dill feta pasta salad & some sausages to bring home… what a treat!

How lucky is danvers to have such a good spot right in downtown. I had my first northshore beef EVER today so I dont have anything to compare it to but holy crap, it was SO GOOD. Is this what I've been missing? I got the Bolognese too and oh my god, it tastes like my grandma cooked it. This is easily the best butcher shop in the ENTIRE STATE and I am prepared to die on this hill.

Awesome beef on Saturday Update 2/8: picked up some meats and some sausages. Sausages are delicious and unique. The ground meat made for incredible burgers. Pro tip: The line for the roast beef has become insane and honestly not worth waiting an hour in line for a sandwich. Go to a different place for a 3way. The sandwiches during the week are arguably better and there’s no line.

When you get a sandwich from a butcher shop you expect it to be piled high, freshly cut an full of flavor. That’s exactly what the Modern Butcher does. Known for their roast beef (Saturday’s only) please do not skip their Italian sandwich and any of their other cold and hot for every other day of the week (except Mondays, closed). Back to the Italian…I have never seen so many fine cuts of cold shaved to a perfect thinness piled so high and topped with the most flavorful of relish. This was easily the best cold Italian subs I have ever had. This thing was an absolute monster with how much was packed into it. I can not recommend you try this sandwich enough. 10/10 They also have incredible meats and sausages. I had to try the bahn mi, lemongrass ginger dumplings and also the beef steakhouse sausages. This will be my go to butcher from now on. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the music was impeccable. Be sure to stop in or make a special trip because it’s the heartland of sub shops the modern butcher can’t be missed. The bar is higher after eating here.

Came in to finally try the sandwiches I am constantly watching online and WOW! Ended up leaving with steaks, chicken, and sausages to try later because I was so impressed by the freshness and quality of their ingredients. It is clear they care about the quality of what they are putting out so it felt good to spend my money here and support the business. Oh, and the service from the gentleman who first made my sandwiches and then later rung me up at the butcher counter was just the cherry on top, he was so genuine and kind. Can't recall his name, but he had a cool calf tattoo-- thank you for your great service!

The sausage program here is strong. Tried the cacio e pepe, Mongolian beef, Mexican street corn, chili crisp, and loaded tater tot. All of them were a perfect reflection of their name. Was 30 mins late on getting a 3-way but will have to try it next time.

Simply the best! Their sausages are unique, inspiring and delicious. This trip I got Jalapeno Bacon, Ginger Lemongrass Dumplings, Korean Beef and Pizza and each of them, the flavors off the charts. The subs, THE SUBS are INCREDIBLE and huge and nothing but perfection. Just go! Oh Saturday they have the BEST 3Way beef sandwich but be prepared to wait in line.

First time trying out North Shore Beef and why not start at the top? The Super 3-Way is just perfection, and only available on Saturdays. Got there around 10:15am and there were already people there waiting for the 11:00am opening! Was the first wave to be let in and placed my order pronto! That Beef Sandwich is just superb, tender sous vide beef all with a nice pink color. The White American Cheese, Cain's Mayonnaise, and James River BBQ Sauce is what the 3-way entails! You've got to go there and try it out yourself!

If you know, you know. The Modern Butcher's legendary North Shore beef sandwich is one of those rare finds that absolutely lives up to the hype. I got there around 10:15 a.m. and there was already a line forming down the block -- by the time they opened at 10:45, the crowd was buzzing with anticipation (and caffeine). The staff moved things efficiently once the doors opened, and watching them prep those perfectly pink slices of beef in the open kitchen made the wait fly by. I ordered the North Shore 3-Way ($16.85 with tax): tender roast beef piled high on a fresh onion roll, dripping with just the right amount of BBQ sauce and mayo. Every bite was melt-in-your-mouth perfection -- smoky, tangy, and so ridiculously juicy you'll need a stack of napkins. The whole experience felt like a community event -- people chatting in line, the staff smiling despite the rush, and that unmistakable smell of beef and toasted buns filling the air. Come prepared to wait, but it's beyond worth it. Pro tip: get there before 10:30 on Saturdays if you want to score one without a massive queue. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. North Shore royalty.

Sandwich of the day was a hefty fresh Korean chicken burrito. Clearly made by people who love and enjoy food. The burrito was enough for two meals..I ate it in one and would do it again! Looking forward to the next sammy

Had my first 3 way here and it did not disappoint. Got there late on a Saturday afternoon. No lines but two people after me were able to get a sandwich and then they sold out. The bar is set high with this one. Toasted buttery roll that had a really nice crunch and held the beef firmly together. The beef, warm, thin, rare and melt in your mouth tender. Just the right amount of sauce to bring everything together. If you're not making a mess eating it you're not doing it right. This place also has dry aged meats and specialty items.

I was recommended from locals to visit here and it did not disappoint. I barely made it before they sold out of there famous roast beef-three way.

OKAY DAMN. The hype is real people. Stopped by to see what all the talk was about and this place is SO cool. I feel like I've been living under a rock not getting here sooner. Super friendly staff and absolutely AMAZING sammies. Best turkey sandwich I've ever had. Fresh delicious drool worthy. My man got the Italian and I got the turkey BBQ. Also some fresh marinated chicken breasts. Love how you can grab a craft beer there too and just chill waiting for your food. A forever customer. Support local. Bravo!

Second time at modern butcher. Came to try their three way today - I enjoyed a lot. I would have bought some meat today from their butcher but I'm leaving the country two days from now so there is no point stocking the refrigerator. I will need to return. Meats look Delicious.

After stalking their instagram for months, we finally made the trip from Providence, RI. While only 70 miles from home, it took us almost 2 hours to get there because of traffic and I'm happy to share that the time it took us to get there was so worth it. We arrived shortly after opening and queued up in line outside with other sandwich lovers waiting patiently for our turn. We went specifically on Saturday for the North Shore 3 way, lovingly called "the beefs" by the locals standing in line next to us. This sandwich is nothing short of amazing; they sous-vide the meat for 16hrs to get that melt-in-your-mouth texture then roast it in the oven before slicing by hand, add their house made sweet heat barbecue sauce along with creamy cheese and mayo and you've got a pile of perfection right before your eyes! We bought 6 sandwiches so we could each have one while we were there and another to enjoy later at home. I was worried about the take home sandwiches getting soggy on the ride, but they held up great when we enjoyed them 8 hours later. We also shopped their premade food case, picked up some bone broth, some smoked bones for our pups, and bought a sampling of sausages home to try. The staff was friendly and upbeat and managed the lines and customers like pros.

What a delight was to be able to eat here. The service was excellent, they make you feel like you're at home, also depending on what you decide there are some seats available inside our you can take it to go. The place is really nice and cozy (at least to me) and they have a mini market where you can get some other goodies while you wait for your order to be ready. I had their Fried Mortadella and some pickles to go (they were so delicious )

Came because of the hype for the roast beef sandwich - and it exceeded my expectations. Hands down the best north shore beef I've ever had. Great customer service. The meats on the butcher side looked amazing as well. Would 100% return when in the area.

With about 45 people ahead of us (they usher in groups of 15), it took us 1hr and 15min to get inside and order at the counter. My husband and I are BIG fans of Modern Butcher (and you should be too!). Modern Butcher is the gem of downtown Danvers, and seems to impress me more and more with every visit. They offer tons of high-end "boutique" food items (things like chili crisp, spices, pastas, you name it) in addition to their butchered meats. The thing that really makes Modern Butcher stand out is their sandwiches. You really can't go wrong with any of their options (be sure to check social media for updates on specials and know that some of them draw a crowd, so be prepared for a line!). You might be thinking, wait, I know Courtney is a vegetarian and she is giving a butcher 5 stars??? Yes, it's true. The team at Modern Butcher is SO awesome, that they have made me a custom vegetarian sandwich on every visit that I have made (and man, are they good). Don't hesitate - run over to Modern Butcher right now. It's a VERY special place!

My wife and I had an Italian sandwich out of here today while we split it and we're glad we did. It was one of the most delicious sandwiches I've ever had. The bread was soft the sweet peppers sauce melted right in to the bread, stacks of meat, stack of peppers and onions, stack of lettuce, and tomatoes, stack of cheese. Thank you very much. Get there early. It's a hard place to get in.

Amazing roast beef sandwich, coming from someone who doesn't even like beef all that much. This is not pretty to eat, especially if you snag one of the seats that face the sidewalk and have to unhinge your jaw in front of the inevitable line of people. (They only have the roast beef sandwich on Saturdays since it's quite an operation to prepare and assemble. For Tuesday-Friday, they have a short list of other sandwiches, including a loaded Italian that I had my eye on. Some food influencer/promoter was there at the same time as we were and got the Italian sandwich to try, so I was mighty jealous.) We waited for about 25-30 minutes all told - first waiting outside, then to get our food. I pride myself on refusing to ever wait in line for food on the theory that there's somewhere without a line that's probably just as good but ... this sandwich may have been worth it (up there with Au Cheval's burger). Would I wait in line for it again? Maybe, which is a pretty high compliment coming from someone who loathes having to do it. The sandwich itself: an enormous stack of tender roast beef, slathered in BBQ sauce, cheese, and mayo. For me (the heathen who finds meat kind of lukewarm in all its forms), the best part of the sandwich was the beautifully griddled roll. They have forks and knives if you need it but I went with the hands-on approach. You will get sauce smeared all over yourself. Best to avert all eye contact in getting the job done. The right side of the store is for sandwiches; the left side is for picking up sausages, burger patties, other meats from the whole animal. The people working at the store, including Lisa the owner personally slapping the sandwiches together in the back, are super nice.

Probably the best beef I've had thus far. Everything about this beef is incredible but the butter toasted bun sets it apart from the rest. The beefs are only available on Saturdays 11am-4pm and have their very own line for their sandwiches. The service is friendly and quick. They also have tables to eat your beef. They also have a curated selection of hot sauces and rubs in the corner of the store. Great vibes and will definitely be coming back!

Ordered during the lunch rush for myself and several customers and every single person was obsessed with their sandwiches. Could not have been a better meal if we tried. Generous, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The staff were great too, even assuring me their famous weekend roast beef is worth the line (and I believe them). Their Instagram is always popping!! and the daily specials make me excited to check it every day. Big fan already, and I can't wait to come back. A true local favorite.

So yesterday, I had just left from getting a haircut and running my car through the car wash and well, being a sunny day (it's been a while) I felt like a drive. I scrolled my navigation panel in my Tesla to decide where to head and The Modern Butcher popped out. Ok. I've been wanting to check out this unique family owned butchery that I've heard about... so... off I go letting my car drive me there. This review is going to be interesting as I will take you from the store to home, to the Weber Grill and the finished steaks and sausages on the plate tossed in with some cooking tips. The store is in Danvers center on a main road so parking was on the street. I found a spot just out front and proceeded to check out what was inside having no clue of what I might buy or just look around. First impressions: - store was very well laid out with tables for seating off to the sides and meat cases straight ahead with smiling faces and everything inside looking sparkling clean and welcoming. - First Lady to say hello with a big smile was "Lisa" (who I later found out was a co-owner with her husband) and I explained that I was here to perhaps bring something special home for me and my steak loving wife. She smiled and started showing me different cuts in the chest behind the counter in one of the pics here. - We're off to a great start!! Humbly, I pride myself (and family and friends have concurred) that I'm pretty well versed in grilling and smoking so I'm no rookie. lol. So... with Lisa's help I settled on nicely marbled bone in sirloins, two filet mignons and four different types of hand made sausages. Total out the door- $113.75 for what looked like some adventurous journey to the grill at home. PART 2 - The true test... cooking and tasting For you grill masters out there here's the setup. Weber Performance Series Grill, MEATER Plus 2 probes, applewood chunks and charcoal fire, reverse searing, prep with salt rub, seasoned with dry rub, clarified Irish butter for finishing off in cast iron 12" skillet leaving probes intact from the grill to the pan. Target temperature- 138-140 rested. STOPPING HERE TILL TONIGHT... I'll be back with more pics and details of the final results... stand by... DRUM ROLL... Grilled and dined on THE best steaks I've had in quite some time... it's a 10! The aged beef rack and the grilling with apple chunks to a nice medium rare to medium was superb in taste!! Period!! And, the coveted 5 Star rating is justly deserved!! Bon appetite!! Ciao.

Easily the best Roast Beef 3-Way I've ever had! Their sandwiches are so unique, and always filling. The couple that own this place are the best, you can see their passion in everything they make. Their new location is so close to my work too.

This place deserves more than five stars. I drove from Quincy just to try their sandwich of the day. After eating it, I'd drive from Los Angeles to get one. Best sandwich I ever had. They took their time and it shows in the presentation. Perfect! The staff were friendly and accommodating to food allergies as well.

Amazingly good. Also got a bone for my pup for $3. The bones are from their smoked meats so she was obsessed. Just get there early if you can.

I bought the Italian sub for $15 obviously it was packed to the punch if you like it that way I mean a little bit much as far as the cost and going over the top on way too much meat. I just think that you should give an option For a couple of different Italian subs that maybe you could sell one for $10 and obviously another one for meats for $15. It was very good. I'm not going to say it wasn't and as an Italian, I thought it was excellent, but I give you three stars for the simple fact that it was a little bit over the top.

Stopped in last Saturday, as we had heard great things about this shop. We are hosting a BBQ this weekend, and I wanted to pick up a few meats to try out. It's a small shop, and at first, I was underwhelmed; expectations were high, given all the praise I heard. There was a bit of a line, which moved quickly, and the workers behind the counter definitely had a solid system in place to move us along. While waiting, we reviewed the numerous and nummy-sounding sausage concoctions. And decided that we would try a few for the bbq. Opted for some Korean Steak tips as dinner for us. And then I saw some pork belly and thought how fun that would be to have at the BBQ after talking to the worker about how to cook it, marinade, etc. He talked me through how much to get and if the skin should be removed. It was very helpful. We grilled the steak tips last night, and Wowza, melt-in-your-mouth flavor bomb! I wish we had leftovers! I even forgot to take pics! The other side of the shop dishes out the sandwich of the day, and we could see that the line moved swiftly as well. While standing there, they sold out for the day! Excited to try the other meats we bought, and we will be regulars, I am sure!

I've always felt Modern Butcher's sammies were a cut above. But the BEEF! That was by far the best roast beef sandwich of my life. By a mile. Saturdays only. If you get there and the beef is sold out, get the also-amazing loaded Italian. Bomb beers too.

Service was great. Clean establishment. Italian sub was incredible. Full of flavor. I'd come back anytime.

I wanted to write this review to bring attention their chilli actually. The roast beef sandwich was the best I ever had but everyone already knows that. I have to say their chili is also the best I've ever had. That's all!

I got the loaded Italian sandwich, my wife got the turkey bacon ranch sandwich. Both were chock full of copious amounts of meat with fresh vegetables and condiments. They have prime choice on display for sale and a refrigerator full of premade selections you can close from. The woman behind the counter was definitely a foodie as we talked roast beef sandwiches and about other food spots on the north shore. She was friendly and had very good knowledge of the menu. It appears the majority of their clientele take their food items to go but there is seating available and the smells that emanate from this place should be available in a car air freshener. Being in Danvers square it's not super fun parking but if you are in the area it is definitely worth the trip.

I mean-come on! You can't even wrap your mouth around this sandwich! Fresh cuts. Tasty. Super nice dudes running the place. Try their cooler gear and the sausages. I haven't made it in time for sandwich of the day...yet. Always sold out. That says something. Easy parking. Eat in or takeout.

Tried their Korean style chicken sandwich today. Loved it sooo much. Tons of delicious, crunchy chicken and the flavors were amazing. Can't wait to try some other sandwiches-of-the-day.

Insanely good quality meat! Every week we get a couple of their creatively delicious sausages. My favorite is the blueberry pancake sausage. Loaded with delicious pork and blueberry pancakes! Their beef tips are pout of this world and sautéed perfectly. Oh and of course the Roast beef "triple play" sandwich is worth the wait in line. A generous portion and the best I've ever had! And don't forget to pick up a delicious dog bone for your furry friend!

This establishment is hammed up and overly expensive. The staff looks miserable and unkempt. I had a rude interaction with a staff member who openly showed disgust that I could not decide on what to pick.Their meats and sandwiches are no different from surrounding stores, or restaurants. Items look like they have been sitting on the shelf for entirely too long. The wait is for their $16 sandwiches is too long, and not worth waiting for. The sandwich I received had half the top missing, and fell apart in my hands. I was unpleasantly surprised at how much I spent on their meats. I left spending an extraordinary amount for nothing. If I could rate this place a zero I would. I do not see this place still being open in the next two years, due to the prices.

I have been to the Modern Butcher a few times now and placed a couple of special orders around the holidays. First, the quality of the meat at the Modern Butcher is fantastic and I have been super impressed. I have gotten 2 standing rib roasts (one Thanksgiving, one Christmas) and both have been top notch. We have standing rib roast every year and by far these are the best we have had. Second, the staff at Modern Butcher are great!! They are super friendly, very easy to work with and seem to really enjoy what they do. The only suggesting that I would make is that they need to come up with a better system for people picking up pre-orders. To pre-order and still have to wait close to 45 minutes for your order seems a bit excessive and I think this was definitely a process problem versus anything else. The staff were working extremely hard and as quickly as possible. It was the process they have in place that failed them. Regardless, I will be back for all of my meat needs every time.

You have to come early and you have to be willing to wait. I've never had the patience to get a 3-way here, but have had multiple of their daily special sandwiches. I have to say that they are downright orgasmic. I take sandwiches very seriously, and this place is absolutely next level. Their smash-style burger was easily the best I've had in my life, and their hot chicken was last-meal level good.

I've got family in Gloucester and we spend most holidays here. I needed something special for Christmas dinner and got a giant prime rib here. It was fabulous. And the service was friendly and efficient. Will definitely be back! Highly recommended.

I was on a day trip from Cape Cod a couple of weeks ago with my mom and sister and I had been wanting to get meat from your store ever since you moved from Newburyport to Danvers. I wasn't even planning to go that day necessarily, but when my mom asked me if we were going to that butcher shop that I had wanted to go to, I made the side trip. I don't even remember telling her that I wanted to go. Anyway, I bought some sausages and chicken breasts while my mom and sister just bought the chicken breasts you had available. Well, now I am in a heap of trouble because now they are begging me to bring them back as they said that they were some of the best chicken breasts that they have ever had. They were thick and juicy with a ton of flavor and puts anything that you get in a conventional supermarket to shame. My only complaint, which I attribute to the fact that we've never been before, is that we went on a Tuesday and the sausages that I wanted were sold out for the week. Don't get me wrong. The ones that I got out of what you had left were very good, but the ones that I really wanted were sold out and I can't guarantee that I can get up there on a Friday when your new sausage lineup comes out. I know from a personal standpoint that between the breakfast sausages and chicken sausages are right up my alley. I also would love to try some of your sandwiches, especially your North Shore roast beef sandwich special. I just wish it wasn't an almost 2 hour trip one way from the Cape just to go to your store.

Split a Turkey and an Italian.. both tasted great, but truthfully they were too thick with cold cuts. Hate to hold that against them as it was really good. Can't wait to try more

great service. owner is extremely nice every time i come here. the food is amazing, their sandwiches are some of if not the best on the north shore. i have yet to find a place to get better sandwiches and fresh meats. i love this place.
