"A fairly new addition to the Waikiki waterfront, the seven-year-old Modern was a dream come true for those young urbanites who never quite felt at home in the more traditional Hawaiian resorts. It’s not directly on the beach—the closest is the lagoon and expansive beach in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, a quick walk on the hotel’s ramp—and instead overlooks the picturesque Ala Wai Boat Harbor, where many of the island’s boating excursions depart. Designed by George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg , celebrities in the world of fashionable hotels, the look is warmly modern, all whites and creams and luxurious wood, and some striking art pieces, including a large surfboard installation in the lobby (titled “Wreck-tangles”). There’s a fun nightclub and some seriously good restaurants, though the real scene is out on the Instagram-worthy two-tiered teak pool deck, lined with lots of cushy chaises and shady corners to curl up. Upstairs is the adults-only pool—less a pool than a shallow water prop for frequent DJ-hosted dance parties. But for as much as the Modern is a hipster haven, the service is surprisingly good at making sure guests never feel like they’re crashing someone else’s party."

"So, the first thing to know is that this is not on the beach but rather along the marina. We’d suggest taking advantage of the location by renting an open-top jeep and exploring the wilds of Hawaii on the North Shore. The hotel itself is more boutique-y than resort, and feels airy, clean and crisp, with lots of white. The vibe is young, cool, modern—less expensive Hawaii—with a spring break vibe for the upwardly mobile. There are four bars, a nightclub (which gets pretty crazy at night), and an ‘adult’ pool where people can be found drinking coconut mojitos in the shallow end at pretty much all hours."

"For those who like their hotels on the modern, sleek side, this is your best bet in Honolulu. The service is flawless—the word "no" is never uttered by the staff—and your every need is anticipated. The adults-only pool scene is terrific—it's smart to rent a cabana if you plan to lounge with any regularity. It's worth noting that the hotel is set adjacent to the marina, but the beach is just a short stroll away. Come nighttime, there is a club-like vibe here, and you needn't leave the property to have an epic night out. Sold and turned in to timeshare property in April 2019."

Great hotel that is walkable to beach (fort Debussy) and local shops - including Alo Moana shopping centre. Easy access to local public transportation - 20 and 42 buses and local trolleys. Staff on reception and guest services were helpful, friendly and informative. Rooms were spacious and clean. The room service ladies were efficient and cleaned/restocked daily. The adult pool isn’t really a pool - but offers a sanctuary from the main pool and kids galore! Pool side bar is good - didn’t really eat there so can’t comment on food. Plenty of beds around the pool so didn’t have to search around. The hotel offers spa and gym facilities as well. Plenty of local shops and restaurants in close, walkable, proximity to hotel.

I did a staycation for my birthday weekend here at The Modern, and it was such a memorable experience! Joanne was very accommodating with my request prior to arrival, which made me feel welcomed even before I got there. I was checked in by John, who was very friendly and pleasant, he made sure I had all the information I needed for my stay.||What made it even more special was the surprise waiting in my room. A big thank you to Marietta in housekeeping for the adorable towel art, it was such a sweet and thoughtful touch. She’s incredibly talented, and it really made my day!||All the other staff members I encountered were very kind as well. The pool was always relaxing, and my friends and I had such a great time. Thank you to everyone at The Modern for making my birthday weekend extra special!

Great stay for 3 nights. Room had King bed and a couch that was sleepable. Everyone at the hotel was nice. A bit more reasonably priced and off the grid a bit from Waikiki. Not a lot of noise. Main pool gets a little bit busy with kids. Wish adult pool was a little deeper.

Okay so this has nothing to do with the customer service or Hilton- this is strictly on the ACTUAL hotel. The bed was honestly one of the worst beds I’ve ever slept on in any hotel. We checked with the front desk and they didn’t have any mattress toppers available-they’re in the process of renovating the owner rooms - I’m not sure if all the rooms were already renovated but the bed we had felt like we were sleeping on a box spring. The parking is also a nightmare. If you come on a weekend you can forget parking in the garage. You have to go park across the street and pay an extra fee for parking - they delete the daily fee however it’s more expensive to park across the street. We overhead from a front desk employee that they add access to the lot across the street onto your room key however we were literally stuck inside the garage and had to pay another fee for a lost ticket - which we had, but the parking meter said it wasn’t found. The thing about the parking lot across the street has absolutely nothing to do with Hilton or the modern- but for such a small lot the modern has it needs to be restricted to hotel guests only- especially on the weekend. We only had issues Friday and Saturday with parking as opposed to the rest of our trip, but it’s something that ended up putting us in a sour mood , and if we would have known about it from the start at check in we would have felt better. We parked out front and came in to the lobby Saturday night and the front desk agent said “oh are you wondering about parking?” So it’s definitely an issue that needs a fix. There’s also a welcome package we were not made aware of with leis and water bottles until the last day of our trip… The staff was very nice and friendly - and with the issues with the parking we did get credited everything back to us, just it was extremely frustrating in the moment. Definitely not the worst hotel in the world however we would absolutely look at different locations on our next visit to Hawaii- there’s many other Hilton hotels literally right next door to this one.

I stayed here in early May. Although the official check-in time was 4 PM, we were welcomed and checked in at 2 PM without any issues—and even received an upgraded room. The room was clean, modern, pleasantly scented, and housekeeping was provided daily. The environment was quiet and peaceful. There is convenient parking available on the lower level of the building. I can confidently recommend this hotel. The location is excellent—just a short 5-minute walk to Waikiki Beach and close to many restaurants. We will definitely return.

LOVED the location. The room was super nice and loved our balcony. We had an issue with air conditioning not working in our original room and John upgraded us to such an amazing room. Justine was awesome too with great customer service and a great local dinner suggestion for a late night bite. We would come back here!

Google
Just enjoyed a five night stay with my family and we were pleasantly surprised with our stay after seeing wildly mixed reviews. We had two partial ocean view rooms (king and double), and the rooms were just that, a partial ocean view overlooking the harbor and ocean in the distance. The rooms were clean and housekeeping was prompt! The front desk and staff were kind and helpful. Parking was affordable and easily accessible. The pool and poolside restaurant and bar, the Grove, was amazing. Food was great, quick, happy hour was fun, and just overall awesome. So many restaurants within walking distance. The publicly accessible lagoon is a short walk. I personally loved the location of this hotel because it was removed from the cluster and chaos of downtown Waikīkī. And just to respond to others specific comments, our air worked wonderfully and the wooden shutters to the bathroom close completely, so yes, there is privacy. This hotel is a solid and affordable option and I’d definitely stay here again.

Google
We love the proximity of this property to places around Waikiki. The Friday fireworks next door is pretty cool to watch too. Park in the overflow garage lot as its elevator is easier to access. The parking in the main garage is nice but its elevator you have to walk around a couple of corners, so just a preference. We’ve stayed here twice, both with the partial ocean view … so nice.

Yelp
Rating 3.5 The staff was always pleasant and helpful. The rooms were cleaned well and the overall stay was fine. We stayed six nights and the bed was comfortable. The room was spacious and included a mini-fridge and a microwave. There also was a Keruig. For being a Hilton, the hotel was run-down. The lights by the bed are designed to be hung in place from the fixture by three outside rods and one in the middle. On one side, the lamp only had one of the outside rods and on the other side of the bed, it had two. The curtain had small holes in the fabric. The mirror in the bathroom was corroded around the edges due to the moisture in the bathroom. None of this impacted my stay, but it's just odd for a Hilton hotel to be in this shape. The bathroom has a shutter on each side of the mirror. Light streams through the shutters even when in the closed position. At night, if someone uses the bathroom, the light that comes through the shutters is quite bright. Shutters don't do much to dampen sound either. Not sure why they felt having shutters on the wall separating the bathroom and sleeping area was important. The hotel is in a convenient spot. If you're taking public transit, the bus stop is right at the corner. It's close to an ABC store.

Yelp
This review is for Courtney- front desk! She is AMAZING- so helpful, knowledgeable! She made checking in a breeze and helped with a parking/ key card situation! Thank you!! The hotel itself is a great location and the bar and amenities were nice!

Yelp
I've taken some time to reflect on this review because I want to be fair. However, I feel it's important to share my experience, especially when comparing what was presented during last year's timeshare tour versus the reality of our stay. Check-In Process: As a Diamond Hilton member, I'm accustomed to a warm welcome, perhaps a small gift or gesture of appreciation. Unfortunately, we were met with attitude from the front desk attendant instead. It was only around 7:00 PM, and we were the only guests checking in, yet the attendant seemed annoyed by our arrival. When we asked about parking and a potential upgrade, we were brushed off. He claimed upgrades weren't available for the category we booked, which hasn't been my experience at other Hilton properties--upgrades are usually offered, even for an additional cost. To make matters worse, the key cards didn't work for either our room or the parking area. When we returned to get replacements, we were given an unnecessary lecture on how to use the key cards--something that felt condescending and frustrating. Room and Service Issues: On our second night, we realized maid service hadn't been provided. At $250+ per night, I don't think guests should have to call and request basic housekeeping. The in-room entertainment was outdated and inconvenient. There's no Netflix or streaming capability, and no guide to help navigate available TV channels. For a modern Hilton property, this felt behind the times. Amenities and Facilities: The adult pool has a bar, but no bartender was ever present. To get a drink or food, you have to leave the area and go down to the kid-friendly pool. Additionally, there were no servers available to take or deliver orders to the adult pool area, which was disappointing. Overall Experience: I understand that the rooms shown during timeshare tours are not necessarily the ones you'll stay in, but the stark difference between the showcase rooms and what we experienced was shocking. The room was worn out and didn't reflect Hilton's usual standards. Frankly, it feels like Hilton purchased this property solely for its proximity to the Hawaiian Village, but they haven't invested the necessary care or management to bring it up to par. For Diamond members--or anyone, really--I'd recommend booking at the Waikiki Beach property or looking at non-Hilton options nearby. Two stars might even be generous, but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt because I know this property could be great if managed like the others in the area. Unfortunately, this was a complete miss for us, and we won't be returning.

Yelp
This is the second time I've stayed here. And both times were okay. Nothing too special to report here. The staff are friendly but I don't see many of them. There's a breakfast spot, a Starbucks and a bar attached to the hotel and it generally ranges for about 20 dollars per food item and 12 dollars cocktail and 8 dollars for a coffee. The beds are a bit firm. I like it medium and this one is a bit harder. Not totally impossible to sleep on but you may wake up once or twice a night. There are three elevators and all are a bit old. The building although named the modern is slightly older but still works pretty fine. It's connected to a mini shopping mall that can be accessed by the pool. Around the corner of the pool is another hotel which I believe is another Hilton. It's not too far from the strip but it's definitely a walk. Maybe looking at 30 minutes. There's a parking lot but I didn't drive and not sure how much that cost. But it looks like it's valet only. It looks to be a little cheaper than The other places in the area so I'll continue to stay here next year when I return.

Yelp
Stayed here for two nights while in Oahu. As a Hilton member, the pickin's were slim - but in the end I am glad we stayed here. Located sandwiched near two other Hilton properties, this had a nice mix of close proximity to stores, meeting places for tours, and nearby to Uber'able places. The room had some wear to it - probably could use a fresh coat of paint, and the shower head could use a cleaning. Plenty of natural light, room had a sitting room, as well as a bedroom - with the bathroom cut off from the shower area. Really appreciate that fetish. Room also had a private deck as well. The thing that was best was the staff - younger guy with a ponytail was friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Also had a restaurant located inside and an outdoor pool area. Only being here 2 full days, I didn't get to experience that as much. Would recommend, would stay again.

Yelp
Friendly staff! Our stay here was memorable because of so many good events. Location is great because it's near everything, walking distance to the mall, souvenir store across the street, near the beach and more.

Yelp
We stayed here this past summer, and it was the perfect location. Close to all the other hotels, and front row view of the firework display every Friday night! Clean rooms and friendly staff. The restaurant is also fabulous for lunch and drinks!

Yelp
Best Mai Tai in Waikiki! The vibe is very laid back, and Derek formulates the best cocktails.

Yelp
We received housekeeping service from Gemma and I must say she is wonderful. She gave great customer service in making sure our room was clean and organized. The front desk employee Jarrick was fabulous in checking us in and making us feel at home. The rest of the staff was great too! This hotel is top notch and I highly recommend this property for others when visiting Oahu, Hawaii. Thank you!

Yelp
I enjoyed my stay. Staff were friendly. Room wasn't bad. The parking lot key thing sucks though but after about 20 tries it'll work. Parking is $35/night but 10% off if a Hilton member it's still expensive but what are you gonna do. The area gets busy sometimes. Especially at night it gets backed up by Red Lobster which is across the street. Location is close to a McDs and ABC & other restaurants within walking distances. I would stay here again

Yelp
The hotel is in a great location and has great amenities in theory. The adult pool is dirty and almost non existent, but advertised as a luxury spot. The beds there don't have covers or pillows, there is a bar, but it is closed down. The main pool area is nice, but they are sticklers about outside food and beverage. I paid thousands of dollars to stay here, if I want to bring an already open can of juice or eat fruit in my chair I should be allowed to. Mind you, we still visited the pool bar daily to buy drinks. Speaking of the hotel bar, the bartenders turn you away 15-20 minutes before the bar closes while there are still plenty of guests hanging around. Not an issue of last call as they still offer beer, but they decide to pack up the bar early and can't mix drinks anymore. Again, we paid thousands of dollars to stay here. They charge you for WiFi. I've never heard of this before. They charge you for hotel coffee. $8 to take a cardboard cup and fill it up in the standard hotel coffee stations. I know Hawaii is expensive but seriously? The housekeeping staff was very polite and attentive. Overall, new management and policies could help this hotel achieve its full potential.

Michelle A.

Yelp
Not a nice welcome by the employee especially since it was early morning and being a diamond member. So, we got into the hotel at 1AM, key didn't work, they wouldn't allow for a late check out (10am norm) even though I'm a Diamond Member. I wouldn't recommend this hotel. Have had better service from other Hilton sites.

Yelp
I came here for a meeting, didn't stay in the hotel. Beautiful hotel with lovely furnishings, clean restroom and fast valet. Beware the timeshare sales section.

Yelp
Horrible.. we were supposed to get a room with a balcony.. no.. our stay was for 12 days.. and no dresser for our clothes.. carpet was dirty.. when the wind blew.. the windows shook like someone was trying to break in.. very outdated.. for a Hilton property.. very bad.. I would recommend staying elsewhere

Yelp
We are Hilton Grand Vacation Club owners, and came to Honolulu on a package that they were offering. First of all the location is absolutely fantastic! It is right near the lagoon and just blocks away from many great restaurants and shops. The building is a little bit older than some of the newer hotels, but it is very well kept. They have two pool areas with lots of different options, including loungers in the water, regular lounge chairs, and beach beds. Lots of umbrellas for people who want to be covered. The adult pool area is a flight of steps up from the main pool. It is called a beach, although really just a thin layer of sand surroundings, a very shallow, but pretty blue pool.. There is a bar up there, but it was never opened while we were there. It was really a nice adults-only place to relax. At the main pool they have a full bar and restaurant. Drinks were pretty much in line with prices elsewhere on the island, although they did have happy hour daily. They also had TVs on with all of March madness basketball being .shown. We initially had a room on the 17th floor that was overlooking the marina. The room itself looked great, however, we were right next to the elevators, and it got extremely loud because the elevators were running all night long. (positive note, they have three elevators, and they all move pretty quickly). After our first night my husband went down to the front desk to see if we could get a different room. We were upgraded to the seventh floor with a corner suite. The view here was even better, because we had two balconies: one overlooking the marina, and one overlooking the pools. There was also a little sitting room with an additional tv that was an added bonus. Both rooms had mini fridges & microwaves. All the rooms were decorated with white linens and white curtains for a crisp, clean look . I would say that the carpet was the next thing that should probably be replaced because it was looking a little worn. Also, our patio furniture needed an update. The resort also had a really nice gym with lots of cardio machines and weights. There was also a Peloton, which was a plus for me, although the Internet was down one day, so I only got to use it a few times. The checkin desk had a cute surfing theme, and there was a concierge to help with planning. There were also several little sitting areas in the lobby; kind of weird because no bar there, snd no one was really using any of those spaces. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Honolulu and really liked staying at the Modern Honolulu. Checking in and out was a breeze, and Courtney was super helpful when we asked to switch rooms. If you stay here; you are sure to have a great time, whether you come to sightsee and explore Honolulu, or you just want to relax. There are so many options, something for everyone!

Yelp
This was one of the best hotels my wife and I have ever stayed at! Especially since my wife is pregnant at the moment, we wanted to do one last trip before she goes into labor. We were so glad we settled on The Modern Hilton so much to the point where we want to make this our go to hotel pick from now on the next time we decide to visit Honolulu! From their friendly and prompt customer service, to the presentation of their modern minimalist designed stylish bedrooms, to the cleanliness of their building (They are actually going though a renovation at the time we checked in, so I can't imagine what the final product is gonna look like when its finished.), everything was just right in terms of meeting our expectations. What I really like most about the customer service here is that they send text messages to your phone to check up on how things are going and also remind you of special events that are happening like activities you booked or things you need to do. The best part of it all was that our hotel was situated right next to their famous Hilton Lagoon which adds to the nice touch of keeping a paradise feeling type of vibe. The Lagoon itself offers a bunch of amenities such as paddle boat rentals, surfing lessons, and a bunch more activities surrounded with local food trucks that sell authentic coconut water for those who just want to chill and relax on a beach chair. It's the most ideal place for families with little ones since it is closed off from the actual ocean itself and to top it off there's a cute little island situated in the middle of it. But most of all we wanted to give a big shout out to Jackie at the concierge desk services for making out trip that much more special and fulfilling! She really went out of her way to recommend us activities to fill up our week and also her caringness for advising which activities were suitable or safe for my pregnant wife really shows us what great exceptional customer service skills she's got. She really went the extra mile to make sure we were to get a spot on the island tour even though it was kind of last minute and weather constraints. We can't wait to be back here for another stay in the future!!

Yelp
I am only giving them 2 stars because the rooms are nice and the location. One star for customer satisfaction. I travel every two weeks across the nation, I stay in hotels an average of 120 days a year and have been doing so for the last 14 years . I booked this hotel over a month in Advance, I have status with Hilton. At every Hilton I stay I get offered some sort of upgrade, here I got a room with a parking structure view. I was advised today that my flight is delayed by 3 hours, I asked for a noon check out (check out here is 10:00 AM) they denied that as well. The lack of care for guests is surprising for a Hilton property. Look around the area they are much nicer hotels at better prices (I'm being charged almost 900.00 for 2 nights) you will get a much better experience for your money.

Yelp
I am writing to express my deep disappointment regarding my recent experience at The Modern Honolulu during my recent trip to Oahu. I was presented with an enticing offer to tour and experience The Modern Honolulu property. Unfortunately, the reality of our stay was far from what we expected. From the moment we arrived, we were taken aback by the sight of numerous mattresses stored in the parking lot, left uncovered and unprotected. This was our first indication that the property may not be as well-maintained as we had hoped. Upon checking into our room, we found it to be extremely outdated, dirty, and unwelcoming. The carpet was filthy and stained, and the upholstered headboard showed signs of neglect. The bathroom was completely outdated, with a stained mirror and mildew present in the shower. The overall condition of the room was alarming, with many items appearing dirty or broken. Additionally, the hallway leading to our room felt dark and unsafe, which only added to our discomfort. To make matters worse, upon checking in, we received two boxes of Aloha Purified water, only to discover that the water had expired in June 2024. It was concerning to think about how long those boxes had been sitting there. In an effort to address our concerns, we quickly went to the front desk. The staff member was apologetic and acknowledged that the rooms were outdated, but this did little to alleviate our dissatisfaction. Given the state of our accommodations, we made the decision to leave and book a last-minute stay at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel and Spa. The contrast between the two properties was striking and served to highlight just how subpar our experience at The Modern Honolulu was. We chose Hilton with the expectation of a high standard of hospitality, and we were left sorely disappointed. I hope Hilton takes this feedback seriously, as our experience reflects poorly not only on The Modern Honolulu but also on Hilton Grand Vacations as a whole.

Yelp
We stayed for four nights in this hotel. The location is great. Easy walk to Ala Moana or the heart of Waikiki. Convenient self parking. Lots of restaurants nearby. The service at the hotel was great as well. We didn't eat at the restaurant but the restaurant and bar are very convenient. Our room was comfortable with a nice view of the water.

Yelp
This property is affiliated with the Hilton name but doesn't offer the same elite benefits to Diamond members as most properties because it's part of the vacation club. You can definitely tell the difference. Property is a bit aged and could use an upgrade. A lot of places here in Honolulu are like this though. It is walking distance to boy Ala Moana mall and the downtown Waikiki area. Across from the Marina. 2 pools either one an adults only area. Very shallow but quiet. A filtered water machine available. No shuttle to airport. A restaurant on the premises and an average gym. Staff were nice but nothing special. Overall a decent visit

Yelp
A Stellar Return to The Modern Honolulu On my return visit to The Modern Honolulu, I was pleasantly surprised by the remarkable improvements in service, largely thanks to several outstanding staff members. From the moment I arrived, Jastine at the front desk made check-in a breeze with her accommodating nature and warm welcome. It set a positive tone for the rest of my stay. The exceptional service extended beyond the front desk. Annabelle, one of the dedicated housekeepers, ensured my room was immaculate every day. It's worth noting that each housekeeper manages the cleanliness of an entire floor, shared with only one other colleague, which is no small feat. Given their hard work, I recommend tipping at least $5 each day for the housekeeping service, though you might consider more depending on the state of your room. Keep in mind, the minimum wage in Honolulu is around $14, which highlights the importance of tipping generously for their invaluable service. Glenn, the bellhop, was also instrumental in making my stay enjoyable. His promptness and eagerness to assist with luggage and inquiries were appreciated, embodying the hotel's commitment to guest satisfaction. The consistent thread linking Jastine, Annabelle, and Glenn was their exceptional customer service, which significantly enhanced my experience at The Modern Honolulu. This visit has completely changed my perspective of the hotel for the better, and I look forward to returning, confident in the knowledge that their team genuinely cares about guest experiences.

Yelp
I've never been to this Resort. I am always open to stay at new places. I'm glad we stayed here. We booked two rooms one had a partial ocean view and the other had the city view (both beautiful views if you ask me). They have a parking garage and one they call overflow parking. I don't think there was much difference. I'm very happy that the parking fee wasn't overly priced compared to other hotels and resorts around. It's near a mall, restaurants, shops, and other hotels. If you don't plan to explore the island I'd say this is the perfect spot! The resort is beautiful! I was totally amazed with the view especially when you are at the sunset pool. I love that they have that upper deck for adults only (you can have a bit of quite time up there w/out kids). There is also a gym and a spa. There is a water bottle filler also. The rooms are set up nicely. The beds are low though kind of like Japanese style because is lower than usual. (Check out the pics). Another great thing about this resort is the restaurant/bar. The food was delicious we ended up eating here a few times. It is not on the beach, however it is on the waterfront with boats docks which creates a beautiful view. The beach is less than a quarter of a mile walk. There is a pathway that leads to the beach. We went walking every night, the weather was perfect. Last but not least, the hotel and restaurant staff Very helpful, friendly, and welcoming. The lobby does not have a luxury look but don't judge until you see the inside. Oh one more thing, I would have given a 5 star rating except that the lobby was not ADA accessible. There's no ramp at the front so if you have a lot of luggage go straight to the garage for elevator access. If you have a wheelchair no access from the front to the lobby. But, I/We totally enjoyed our stay here! I wouldn't mind staying here again!

Yelp
my mom and i stayed at the Modern Honolulu from Wed. Oct 23rd-Sun. Oct 27th. i was hesitant because most of the reviews on yelp are negative is some way. we must have gotten lucky because we fully enjoyed our stay. upon checking in we got upgraded from a city view room to a "partial ocean view room." which was amazing of course! and even better when we got to see the view because not only was it partial ocean view but, also partial marina, lagoon, and full pool view! it was AMAZING. what a wonderful upgrade we are really thankful for! our room was clean from top to bottom and we had daily house keeping. trash bins taken out, fresh towels every day and beds made. we even ran into one house keeping lady and she was very nice and seemed to know some other guests just by recognizing them and letting them know she cleaned their room. she also told us to enjoy our stay and if we needed anything now we could ask or to just call the lobby and they would have someone come with anything we need at any time. the pools were never too crowded, breakfast at the grove was good and we were given a buy 1 plate get the other 50% off coupon. we had the kalua loco moco (our fave) and kalua eggs benedict. poke nachos at the grove bar were delicious! and the garlic truffle fries were great too. we could have passed on the sausage and pepperoni pizza, it tasted like a hot pocket/frozen pizza. happy hour is from 2-5pm and margaritas and mai tai were good and the Lilikoi mocktail was AMAZING! the lobby smells phenomenal! they have filtered water filling stations and they offer 2 free boxed waters everyday but they were expired 2months behind. a lot of reviews say the staff is rude but we didn't have that experience. everyone was nice and answered questions nicely and had all the information we needed one of the ladies even complimented my hair :) a lot of comments complain about the bathroom not being private enough but all u have to do it close the sliding door and shut the shutters. now, it's definitely not noise canceling but i'm not sure if the other reviewers in these comments are blowing up the toilets and are embarrassed of their party hearing or smelling lol. my mom and i don't have this problem so i guess that's why we didn't mind. could have used more hooks for hand towels, bathing suits, bags etc but we managed, no biggie. the room had a mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker with everything needed for a regular coffee with sugar and half and half. all this said, we enjoyed our stay and would return. we were on the fourth floor in room # 417. we did not hear the hilton hawaiian village strikers at all inside our room and slept peacefully. we only heard the strikers around 8am when we were having breakfast in the outside balcony of the grove but it wasn't a bother, i'm glad the employees are taking a stand. parking and resort fees cost us another $300 it was pricey.

Yelp
It's meh at best. I wouldn't choose to stay here in the future. Staff were all pleasant. The noise from the street kept us awake all night. Loud cars/police/fire motorcycles. The rooms are not sound proof. Also the AC does not cool the room off. It's so uncomfortable because our room is so hot at night. The beds are ok and pillows are nice and soft. The rooms from afar look pretty but when you look closer at things they are very dated. Grime and muck all in the shower grout, the bathroom mirror is peeling. Carpet is filthy. Also! At check in they gave us all expired boxed waters. Which was really disappointing as a Hilton Honors Member. I see from other reviews they've done this to other people too even acknowledging it and still continuing to do it. I would suggest finding another place. This one leaves much to be desired especially with a Hilton name.

Yelp
Mine and my family's stay here was okay. The biggest issue I had was that they do not clean your room during your stay. They only clean when you check out. There's something going on with the housekeeping union from what one of the sweet house keepers was explaining to me hence why they were outside with their megaphones protesting. Any garbage you accumulate, you just leave it outside your door for them to pick up. If you need any towels or other things, they will bring it up to you as well. Also, the front desk guy needs to adjust his attitude or go work somewhere where he doesn't have to deal with people all day. Has zero customer service skills and doesn't seem to enjoy his job one bit. All the other employees I encountered during my stay were very pleasant. We stayed in a 2 bed partial ocean view room for 7 nights, mind you these are not queen beds, they are fulls. The furniture in the room is outdated, some with stains as well as carpet stains, the wall in our shower was peeling. The door to the bathroom had no lock and there were shutters that can easily be opened which lacks bathroom privacy. As a HGV owner, we expected a bit more. Although, the rooms didn't have a kitchenette, at least we had a microwave. We heard that renovations to this place are expected to take place in 2025 but in the mean time, they should definitely have this place deep cleaned and offer daily cleaning. If not daily, then at least offer cleaning for stays more than 2 nights. What I liked is that we were right next to the Ilikai which houses some good eats like Cinnamon's, Paradise Poké, and Dave's Ice Cream. The hotel is also right across the street from an ABC store & McDonald's as well as close to the Ala Moana Center.

Yelp
This Hotel needs some attention. Beds are not comfortable the mattress pad sits on top of a flat wooden plank no box spring, the carpeting in rooms are stained & wet. The rooms need thorough cleaning. The breakfast selection is not the best! The best part of this hotel is the pool area and its services. This hotel does not provide easy access to the beach area. This hotel is definitely not comparable to the other Hilton HGV in the Hilton Hawaiian village. We will not be coming back.

Yelp
Our first time in Hawaii and we booked a stay at The Modern Honolulu. The staff was so nice and welcoming and the hotel smelled really good. Our room was nice and clean and our balcony partially over looked the water. The parking is small and a little confusing to get to. I think we circled around more than a few times trying to find the parking garage. The hotel gives you 2 free bottled water a day. We really enjoyed our stay but there was one more when there were people protesting down below at the pool that woke us up super early. They were so loud and would not shut up for the longest time. They woke everyone in the hotel up and I could hear other people yelling from the balcony for them to "shut up". Other than that, we had a great time and will most likely book at this hotel again next time we visit!

Yelp
We absolutely enjoyed our stay here!! The team was friendly and welcoming, and met our expectations for service and hospitality. Conveniently located between Honolulu and Waikiki with easy access to H-1 freeway, getting around the island is a breeze. This place is completely unassuming from the street. The hotel is updated, bright, and fresh. The rooms are fairly spacious with large bathrooms. We spent every evening at the pool and pool side bar. There was plenty of lounge space around the pool. The bar offers poolside service and the food and drinks are delicious! A couple of things to know: as of August 2023 there is no daily housekeeping service available. I was able to text the front desk team for fresh towels and linens. I could also have trash picked up as needed. The pool towels could be a little more substantial. Just one step above a bath towel. Parking, like every where else on the island is fairly limited. None of these things would deter us from staying again. The location is fantastic, the staff is very friendly and hospitable. The rooms are decent size, updated, and clean.

Yelp
A beautiful boutique hotel in Waikiki. A little in the outskirts so not too busy with tourists or crazy traffic. Got a king suite which is PLENTY SPACIOUS! Kings size bed and a huge L shaped couch. Tons of room if you have little ones too. They have two pools. One for adults and one for kids. Of course the one for adults has sand and is shallow so of course the kids want to go to that one but aren't allowed. The main pool is a decent size with lots of chairs and a gorgeous bar covered by tree branches. Pool servers were very friendly and have a good little happy hour from 3-6. Food: Turkey club sandwich I give a 6. The turkey was very low quality deli meat with those clear holes inside. They give 3 slices but I'd rather have actual turkey because it was gross. Spicy fried chicken sandwich I give a 9 and would definitely get again. Also ordered the kids Mac and cheese. It's Kraft Mac and cheese but they added extra cheese inside so it tastes a little different. Came with fries and the kids liked it. Would definitely recommend staying here.

Yelp
I loved being here. Now it wasn't as good or as fancy as the Ilokai next door. They don't have all of the stores on the bottom floor, but that's fine. I could go next door or across the street for my needs. They didn't have a coffee place onsite, but I could get coffee elsewhere. They did have a place for food, which I found the day before I was leaving. But, all in all, I had a room, it was neat, and I rested well. What more can a girl ask for? A room with a full kitchen, which is what the Ilokai had. An ocean view, I wish, but the view of buildings was OK. That didn't change the fact that I was in Honolulu, so it didn't bother me that much. I was on the 17th floor and a woman assumed I was in a penthouse. I assured her that it wasn't. But my picture, where you see the boats and blue water in the back, came from the balcony. The people who work here are very nice. I was greeted warmly, presented with leis, and felt right at home. I was greeted first by the concierge desk, it was the first thing I saw and there was no line. They helped me to arrange my trip to the Pearl Harbor Museum and I'm grateful for that. Then I went to check in and was a bit early, so I was given a place to keep my luggage until my room became ready. At that time, I had no difficulty getting my stuff and going up to my room. I loved my time here and I'd stay here again if ever given an opportunity to do so.

Yelp
SERVICE The location/address & marketing presence is a bit in disarray, following the Hilton merger. it's hard to find information like phone numbers or menus online. Legacy Links (for example: themodernhonolulu.com/waikiki-restaurants) weren't migrated and don't redirect to useful/updated information. Delivery & rideshare apps also have a hard time with the location, with only a reference to the spa (which has been closed for 2 years) as a pick up point. Very confusing for first time travelers. Check-in took a bit long but the staff is friendly & personable. Tap payment option is available. Calls to restaurant or reception often went unanswered on multiple attempts. Spacious elevators, albeit slower than normal & make horrendous sounds when closing. Late checkout (1hr) offered. $35 resort fees. ROOM High cleaning standards. Large room with a beautiful & simple aesthetic. Balcony space is quite relaxing & includes 2 chairs, but they aren't very comfortable or well-maintained. Room is comfortable for a party of 2; very little storage space for personal items except for the closet. BED King bed sleeps very well. The pillows weren't king size nor optimized for comfort. The base is sturdy but protrudes quite a bit, so mind your shins. Very coarse flat sheets but the down blanket was unexpectedly soft, cozy, & eco friendly! (Recycled microfiber polyester). BATH Unique design & very clean. Crabtree Evelyn bath products provided. The sink design is beautiful -- very wide and has great usability. Amazing water pressure throughout to fully take advantage of the 5-spray pattern shower head. Glass shower door is a bit misaligned and requires some effort to fully close. Towels are on the larger side. Standard 2-ply TP. TV basic programming for Samsung flatscreen on swivel mount. No casting/screen share functionality, but the ports are easily accessible if you happen to bring cables. HDMI input wasnt compatible with latest MacBook, so YMMV. The remote is very hygienic, but the functionality is poor & unintuitive. WI-FI Basic complementary behind a web portal & a premium paid offering is available. Free Wi-Fi is good for light surfing & generic multitasking; not so much for video conferencing and engineering workloads. 21 Mbps down ; 14-18 Mbps up Good QoS for mobile devices. FOOD DoorDash & UberEats friendly. mini coffee bar, microwave, & small (15-30") mini fridge in room. Ice machine on floor. Restaurant room service is available but we weren't able to reach the restaurant over the phone after many attempts & gave up . NOISE Very noisy being in the middle of the city. No noise issues from neighboring walls, but the ceiling is another story, YMMV. VERDICT Just "ok". Maybe post-merger it will become more noteworthy. 3/5 Video walkthrough: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cush7X5PNtQ/?igshid=YzcxN2Q2NzY0OA==

Yelp
One word- DIRTY. We stayed here in the "high roller" suite one night. It was dirty, the carpet very badly stained almost everywhere, mold in the shower, random hairs all over the room and couch, ants all over the coffee machine. Check in process was terrible- thankfully the young woman checking us in was nice enough. There was a looooong line to check in with only 3 people working the front check in desk- while those people were working hard there were 4 people gossiping loudly that worked for the resort at the what I'm assuming is concierge at a desk close by. Really?! It felt so rude to do that to the guests waiting to check in. The pool down below was nice but the adults only pool was dingy and had seen better days! There were weird white bugs crawling on my towels- got new towels still had the bugs. I'm a local and I'm used to bugs but this was gross.

Yelp
I was so upset by Friday 02/16 with my stay at this hotel. I stood here on Valentine's Day thru 02/21. I needed my bathroom cleaned and I had so much trouble trying to get the front desk to allow housekeeping to clean my bathroom. It was ridiculous and rude. I was told "it is not my cleaning day. Tomorrow is ur cleaning day". Are you kidding me!!! I explained that I had an accident and it needed to be cleaned. And still was told "we will see what we can do ". Wow!! Also, I asked for water and was told "oh it is $4 for water bc this water is for check in guests". And so I say.. "well I checked in late last night and I didn't get water so may I plz have a water?" Overall, my stay was frustrating and disappointing for being in Hawaii.

Yelp
***STAY AWAY*** Please please trust the reviews you see, bed bugs are definitely in this hotel and the staff are keeping a tight lip about it. After finding a bed bug the hotel manager was willing to pay for my clothes and suitcase to be laundered however refused to refund me my 2 nights stayed. That aside, the hotel room furniture is old and dated and just dont feel clean. Hotel security was way nicer than any of the front staff. They are not friendly or welcoming at all, even informing them of bed bugs they showed no remorse or understanding. Just blank expressions followed by "what do you want us to do about it" gestures.

Yelp
Incredibly pushy, not happy with the amount of spam phone calls I get trying to get me to shell out $$$ for a trip I cannot afford to take.

Yelp
One star for being walking distance to many diverse choices of entertainment, food and activities. The service is horrible The front desk's attitude is "you are lucky I am taking care of you" while checking us in. And then there is a whole desk of sharks (people in blue shirts) who aggressively want to sell you something that you must pass by in order to get to the elevator. When they called our room when we are sleeping just to tell us about our "welcome packet" I knew something is up: from the fellow yelpers I found out they are selling time share. Arg! Oh and they don't do room service ( as of may 10th 2022) and still charge resort fee $40 ish each day. The hotel itself, the only thing "modern" is its name. Despite being a 4-star hotel- The water pressure AND temperature is inconsistent when turned on; which makes an interesting and unpleasant shower experience. The building exterior has chipped paint/plaster which makes the balcony not so welcoming. The pool's VIP reserved day bed has mattress with cracked and peeling cover. And to top this off the night before we left we found huge crawling cockroach which we had to kill by ourselves and it took them 5-10 minutes to come get it while we just stared at the coach roach. When we asked house cleaning crew who came to get the cockroach whether there is a known roach problem in the hotel, they just gave us an embarrassed smile and didn't want to answer.

Yelp
We are owners of Hilton Vacation Club and went to this place. I would honestly wait until is all renovated but all they need to do with the old rooms is a little TLC and that will do until the refurbishment is done. Example: shampoo the carpets. The room was clean and had a gorgeous view. Customer service is what saves the place, and gives the 3 stars. 2 stars deduction because, as an owner, we should be given the better rooms and not the tired run down ones.

Yelp
A very nice hotel. I'm a Hilton-brand fan, but this hotel isn't yet up to sporting the Hilton name just yet. I understand they're making renovations and improvements though. Until then, this is what I experienced during our stay October 1-7, 2023. Check-in: We were upgraded to a one bedroom corner room facing the pool and marina. The Room: Clean, modern-looking, and organized. Two balconies (one facing the pool, the other facing the marina) were very nice. Housekeeping was incredible. Towels and toiletries refreshed, trash emptied, and bed made daily. One morning, the housekeeper knocked at 7:15AM; I give her credit for a great work ethic, but it was a bit early. Breakfast: A basic menu but sufficient to quickly get something in your tummy before you hit the beach. Parking: We had no trouble during our stay finding parking in their onsite parking garage. Check-out: Fast, simple, and interested in how we enjoyed our stay.

Yelp
WOW!!! Where do I start? We came in early, around noon, and called the front desk to see if they could take our luggage before check in. They happily said they would do it no problem. We arrived around 12:30 to drop off our luggage and planned to go to Al's Moana mall until our 4:00 check in. The bell boys were extremely nice, took our luggage and tagged it. They then said we could go to the front desk and pre-register our room, that way it would be a faster check in at 4:00. We walked up to the check in counter and was happily greeted by the very nice woman. We asked if we could pre register for our room and she happily said she could help us. She worked on her computer for about 3 minutes and asked if we would like to check in at that time instead of just pre registering, so we responded that would be great. I then asked if they had any upgrades available as we booked a standard room. We heard there was a firework show that night and was wondering if we could possibly get a room with a view for that. At first she said that they were fully booked due to graduations and Mother's Day weekend. We understood and was happy she could even check us into a room early. She continued to work on the computer for another minute then said she had good news! They had an ocean view room available. Without hesitation, she booked us that room!!! She handed us the room keys and said our baggage would be up to the room shortly. Let me tell you, this room is GORGEOUS!!! A beautiful 1 bedroom suite with 2 Lanai's. The room was very clean and definitely "modern" looking. Less than 5 minutes later, bags were brought to the room! I received a text message from the hotel stating that unfortunately room service is unavailable at the time but if there was anything we needed, just text the number for anything. Apparently there is a room service/housecleaning strike going on right now, however I wouldn't have known about it if the bartender at the pool wasn't talking about it with the other bartender. There wasn't any bashing the strikers, it was more of informing the other bartender of the situation. Regardless, strike or not, the staff there was extremely pleasant to deal with. I would 1000% recommend this hotel. Unfortunately we are only here for a night. We fly to Maui for a week in the morning, but to be honest, we do not want to leave here.

Yelp
Why does the restaurant only have plastic cups and paper plates? Such a waste of plastic. We ate here today and every single drink provided was given in plastic cups with plastic straws.

Yelp
AWFUL. BED BUGS.... We spent over $2K to stay here for 5 days for my friends birthday and were greeted with rude employees who didn't welcome us and demanded to pull our car up a different way at 11PM. After this, we discovered we had GNATS in our room that were in the walls, crawling around our beds, in our fridge... The last night we stayed here, we witnessed A BED BUG crawl into my friends suitcase. We're from NY, we've unfortunately seems bed bugs before and that was it. We also found a mysterious brown stain on our bed after the room was cleaned that seeped all the way into the sheets and we had been out all day. The worse part was that we had a birthday dinner planned with a cake and everything and we had to cancel the reservation. And the best part is when we went downstairs and spoke to the manager, all they offered us in return was a later checkout and $100 hotel credit. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? We deserve a refund! We deserve dinner and cake sent to us. We deserve an apology! We have planned this trip for 8 MONTHS. They couldn't event offer us laundry service since our flight leaves before we could get it back. To say that I'm appalled and not surprised is the truth. They don't care. They just want to make money. DON'T STAY HERE!

Kat V.

Yelp
I'd give zero stars, if I could. We live on Maui, Front St. We lost our home, our jobs. Flew to Oahu to find a bed for a few nights as we had nowhere. The modern confirmed availability but refused to discount it even a little. No compassion. They rather a vacant room then a discounted rate. No Aloha! Boycot them as they have no place in Hawaii. We are featured on the news and will tell all. Thank you Kristen for not caring for ohana! !

Yelp
Yelp lists the Hilton Vacation Club as one of the top ten pet friendly hotels in O'ahu. BUT, their website shows "pets not allowed." What gives???

Shelly D.

Yelp
We have been a loyal Hilton Honors member and customer. Out of all of the many hotels we have stayed, we will NEVER stay at Hilton Vacation Club The Modern Honolulu again. We recommend no one does. There are too many other options and this place lured us into staying there because it appears to be renovated but it's only about 50% there. It needs major improvements to the sound barrier and key security system. For 8 nights, we endured room 1530: - Having our faces blasted with the air conditioning vent - You can hear the people next door and street noise all night because the rooms and slider isn't insulated. - The worst bed (felt like a box spring) on a platform that allows for you to trip over due to the overhang. - Poorly designed bathroom with shutter vents (instead of actual walls) that gives zero privacy. - Broken refrigerator - Rusted seating on balcony - "Free water" was expired for 3 weeks - Small pool (there are two but both are overcrowded during holiday season) - Constant sound of the elevator despite being almost 5 rooms away - The WORST situation: locked out of room and parking daily due to inadequate magnetic room key functionality. Most annoying was that the front desk employees were trained to blame the customers by saying that we "must have demagnetized them by putting them next to our phones". After the third night, finally waiting in line hearing other people complain, someone said that they are aware of the "outdated" key system. They said management won't listen to them and we needed to leave a review. Here we are. Upon check out, we told them our displeasure and they said, "oh yeah, I know that room and it's bad". I'm glad that we spent a $35 per day resort fee and $35 per day self parking so add $70+tax to your per room cost. The only positive thing is the few days that the restaurant was open, we had breakfast and there was the nicest guy at the counter taking our order. He needs to find another employer. This place doesn't deserve him.

Yelp
The pool and outside dinning are very entertaining, especially on Sundays. I've always enjoyed their rooms and the plantation shutters utilized as room dividers. It gives the hotel a marina and Oceanside ambience that contributes to the stay. Hope are that since the Hilton acquisition the property will be spruced up to its former glory and than some!

Yelp
I chose to stay here for a week based on the positive reviews I saw on Priceline. I'm not sure how it got its name but it's not very modern at all. There is only cable TV and there are no usb outlets. Everything is quite outdated in the room and the hallway is dark and dingy. The room is spacious and the location is quite nice with the harbor and city view. The pool and bar area is one of best amenities and they're open until 10pm. However, there is no jacuzzi unfortunately. The gym is open during covid as well. It's a bit of a walk to the main Waikiki downtown area which is a downside for convenience. We did a rental car for our entire stay so we ended up having to drive down when we go down to the center of Waikiki and the beach nearby. The parking rate is $26/night which is not included with our stay so it's an additional add-on. I'm giving this hotel a 3 stars due to the customer service during covid. There is a lack of "service" and room service is by request only. I was very disappointed to find out that they no longer offer laundry service here. I expected more out of a 4-star hotel.

Yelp
I was really worried when someone else posted pictures of their leg having bed bug bites. I realize later that bed bug bites tend to be in small clusters, unlike that photo. Anyways, I stayed here for a couple of nights and enjoyed my time there. Staff was very helpful and friendly, and the pool DJs had good EDM and remixes. I liked the adult lounging area in the upstairs "Sunset Pool" best, as the "Sunrise Pool" downstairs was noisy with so many people and kids. The room was clean, including the bed. Amenities were standard: microwave, coffee machine, fridge, safe, etc). I really like the bamboo and lemongrass soaps provided.

Dale R.

Yelp
I was concerned after booking The Modern, then reading the reviews. We stayed 3/12-3/19. We loved it! Great location. The food is really good. The pool bar & grill has nice ambience. The staff were very nice & friendly. The rooms are a little dated, but bright and clean. Bathroom was updated & large. Our view from the balcony was very nice. The bed is firm, but comfortable. We did get housekeeping once during our 1 week stay ( which is fine with me. I don't want to worry about getting out of room for housekeeping). No bed bugs! We look forward to visiting again!

Mike S.

Yelp
The location is really the only plus. Well and I didn't see any bedbugs like others reported. The hallways are extremely dark, but look the other way and it's not. It depends on which hallway. The carpet had some noticeable stains as did the lamp shades (see pics). I've stayed at all four of the Hilton properties around Waikiki and this is by far the worst. If you care about these things, pay the extra $100 a night and stay at the Hilton next door.
