Montagu Arms Hotel | Best places to stay in the New Forest

"High-concept design hotels are all very well, but sometimes a roaring log fire, pristine floral drapes and G&Ts in a flower-clad garden are what’s really required. That’s not to say the Montague is all chintz ‘n’ pearls; the Michelin-starred Terrace restaurant serves up elegant cuisine, the chic, cream Library bar is a great spot for a light lunch, and rooms come with yummy White Company toiletries, fluffy robes and wonderfully comfortable beds. Spa lovers can book treatments at Carey’s Manor, the Montague’s sister hotel, a short drive away. " - Annabelle Thorpe

I stayed at this hotel for 7 nights. The room was very nice and comfortable. It was quiet and the staff was extremely friendly. In the mornings the staff would make sure the continental breakfast was ready for 7am instead of 7:30 bc that is when I needed to have breakfast. It was a nice and thoughtful touch that made my stay pleasant. I appreciate their attention to detail and helpfulness during my stay. I would recommend this place to anyone that will be in the area. I will come back to stay when I am traveling this area again.

We can't thank the team at Montagu Arms enough for making our wedding just perfect. We had planned a low key but very special and intimate day and they delivered. The setting was just perfect at Christmas with stylish decorations and a very special festive vibe. The food was a very high standard and very well executed particularly for those guests of ours who had dietary requirements, their food was just as impressive. Clara, the Wedding planner, is very experienced and very easy to work with. She made the process really easy and had many suggestions for the details of the celebrations that worked really well for us. We were lucky that our December wedding day weather was just lovely so we were able to make the most of the gardens and front of the hotel for some lovely pictures. We would highly recommend this venue for a special occasion. We had a really lovely day and Iook forward to returning to celebrating anniversary's and other occasions and to relive our wedding day.

Amazing stay at the hotel, the staff were very attentive and the room was beautiful. The food in the restaurant was fabulous, nice pub next door too and some great food spots in the village. Really good continental breakfast too - didn’t need the cooked one. Beaulieu itself is a stunning place. Made our engagement celebrations very special!

I love going to the Montagu Arms, which remains my favourite hotel in the UK, and it is great value for money. The welcome is always warm, and it is even better with the sweets there now :-). They allow you to pull your car up at the front to unpack your bags, which they will then carry to your room. Parking is excellent.|The bedrooms are comfortable and very clean, with access via a real key that your phone won't delete. The beds are comfy, and the bathrooms are well-equipped and stocked. The only minor issue was that the room heating could not be turned down, but this was not really an inconvenience.|Breakfast is excellent, made even better by Martha, one of the servers. She always asks if you will be back, and if not, she wishes you a wonderful trip. The food at breakfast is excellent. The full English is great.|Although it's a busy hotel, the noise level is very low, and the atmosphere is very good.|At checkout, which is quick, they give you an apple and water for the journey.|The location is in the beautiful village of Beaulieu and is very convenient for the car museum. There are also great opportunities to see New Forest ponies and donkeys.|I would highly recommend The Montagu Arms.

We had a fantastic stay in The Montagu arms, from the moment we arrived the staff were warm, friendly and attentive giving a feeling of old fashioned luxury. The hotel is a beautiful building in a very pretty setting with a choice of two restaurants, both with great food. The room was also great, clean, comfortable with everything we needed. Overall a lovely experience and we will return. Thank you

Went here for a birthday and stayed overnight. It rained yet it was still magical looking out into the garden during dinner. The food is fantastic and the sommelier really knew his stuff selecting the perfect wine for each course. The staff were great and we even got a list of where to go in Paris when we go. The food was right on point, flavours that were so good and complimentary with all local produce... beyond words to describe. The room was so cosy yet spacious, looking out over the garden. Breakfast was simply the best with great coffee and selections to make, everything was on offer.

We enjoyed a lovely pampered pooch break, complete with a complimentary dog hamper full of treats and toys - such a thoughtful touch! The hotel is beautiful with stunning grounds, and we stayed in the Hazel room, a very impressive suite with direct access to the courtyard. The only minor issue was that the shower drained slowly, causing some water to pool on the wet room floor.|We ate at Monty’s Inn in the evening (dog friendly) and the food was delicious. Overall a very enjoyable short break and we would have no hesitation in returning.

We went here for afternoon tea and our experience was mixed, at best. We had booked previously for 2 humans and 2 dogs (as it is advertised as dog friendly). When we arrived, we were told by the receptionist, as we had dogs, we would be seated in the conservatory. There were no staff to be seen, but there was a table for 2 marked as reserved, so we assumed that was for us and sat down. After waiting 10 mins or so and no one appearing, my hub went in search of a staff member to let them know we were there. He found a waitress who proceed to tell we couldn't sit at that table as it was booked. She was right. It was booked. For us....Not the best welcome but, to be fair, the staff did then try to make amends by being friendly and attentive (albeit slightly awkwardly). We ordered afternoon tea - which when it arrived was perfectly fine (if not exceptional); and two 'chicken casseroles' for the dogs, priced at a whopping £11 each (yep. we are nuts). What arrived for them were two small bowls of what looked like rice with bits of carrot and peas, with no chicken to be seen. No one's idea of 'casserole' and honestly a bit of a mickey take at that price (the dogs still ate it, mind). I appreciate people who are dumb enough to spend that much on their dogs probably don't deserve much sympathy (first world problems, and all that), but it honestly did feel a bit cynical on the hotel's part, so, on that basis, I doubt we will return.

Yelp
I have just celebrated my birthday with a wonderful stay at the Montagu Arms, and what a fantastic stay it was - happy birthday me!! We chose the Montagu Arms because of it's location in the quaint village of Beaulieu, and because it was home to the Michelin star restaurant, The Terrace (review to follow shortly). The building itself dates from the 17th Century and the gardens that surround it are stunning, even on a grey, rainy March afternoon. As soon as we arrived, we were made to feel extremely welcome. The hotel had upgraded us to their suit!! I didn't realise until later that they must have noticed my date of birth on the booking form and did this as a special treat for my birthday, it really was the most lovely surprise. Our luggage was taken up and we were shown around our room, or should I say rooms...! Delightful bedroom with a four poster bed, and dual aspect windows with views over the gardens, a separate living room, and two bathrooms!! I have never stayed in such a big area. The rooms are a little dated in their decor but this just adds to the charm as far as I am concerned. The bar, lounge and dining room are also exquisite and a delight to spend time in, an all the staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a feast with a selection of cooked dishes available, in addition to homemade granola, fruit, pastries, breads and cheeses. I went for the smoked salmon and scrambled egg, on top of all the other treats available, and couldn't eat for the rest of the day! On check out, we were presented with a little paper bag with water and apples for our onward journey. It's simple touches like this that make a stay memorable and ensure repeat customers, although we may need to save the pennies as its not the cheapest option obviously!

Yelp
My favorite place to stay in the UK. Hands down. A little treasure in the New Forest. The accommodations are quaint and comfortable. Every room is different and unique but all are beautiful. The staff is welcoming and made me feel comfortable from the start and after any visits, I feel like a regular. The garden is beautiful. The restaurant is wonderful. Monty's Pub is a favorite. The only downside...occasionally a wild pony or donkey may block the driveway. And I love it!!!

Yelp
The Montague Arms is all about the little things like welcoming you at the door and showing you to your room while giving a mini tour and history of the place. They exceed customer expectations of always being friendly and attentive yet discreet when needed. They set the bar high! I loved the homemade biscuits, weather updates on our pillows, turn down service and my free newspaper. Not to forget, the brown paper bag of water and apples for our journey as we left. There are two restaurant located in the hotel, the Terrace with one Michelin star and brasserierie style Monty's Inn. The outdoor area is perfect in the warmer periods for high tea or drinks where you can watch the sparrows play in the garden.   Monty's Inn is more informal and suited us fine for the first night. Although we had a few lost in translation moment with our young French waiter, the meal was enjoyable and memorable. You can also use the gym, pool and spa facilities at their sister hotel, Carey's Manor Hotel & Spa in Brockenhurst, approximately 15 minutes away. The gym is airconditioned and if you're lucky, you might be able to join in on some exercise classes in the studio's. Although Beaulieu isn't a big village - a real blink and you'd miss it, it has charm that only a small place could replicate. Make sure to check out the chocolate shop, Patricks Patch - a communal garden and Steff's kitchen located opposite which uses the gardens produce.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, good service, maybe more sandwich & less cake ... But very nice. Pot of gunpowder tea to go with it ... Great ambience :-)
