The Mulberry

"Tucked down a narrow passageway in the heart of town, you will find a set of steep steps that lead you down into this inviting basement restaurant. After a warm welcome from the caring team, you’ll be whisked into the smart, brightly lit dining room with terracotta flooring. Enjoy a cocktail or two while trying to decide between the 6 course tasting menu and a well-priced selection of small plates; dishes are wonderfully balanced and finely crafted, with the skill and originality of the chefs shining through. Save room for the sour cherry custard tart to finish." - Michelin Inspector

A proper hidden gem in Falmouth! Must have walked past it countless times, but upon hearing about it we had to visit. Welcome from the front of house was warm, and the introduction to the menu, meals and drinks was great. Clearly knowledgeable and effort had been put in to learn the courses. One minor downside was the smell inside was too clinical, possibly from the cleaning products. We were the first table in that evening, so the smell may be more subdued in later sittings. Nonetheless, it did not detract from the food. We both had the tasting menu which was wonderful overall. The courses came out well paced and the flavours and quality were brilliant. Overall a fab evening out. Big applause to the chefs as some of the flavours took my wife back to childhood memories. We look forward to our next visit.

Fantastic subterranean restaurant with an exquisite tasting menu. The staff were all incredibly eager and attentive, and you could tell how passionate the lead server was in guaranteeing a good experience. They were also incredibly accommodating for dietary requirements. We let them know ahead of time that one of us was dairy intolerant and they had pre-prepared and printed a dairy-free version of that night's tasting menu, which was just as good as the regular menu. Overall a delightful experience!

I’ve walked past this place 100 times and never noticed it before. A simple sign leading down some steps is your only clue to the existence of this treasure. Decorated like a Greek tavern with white wash walls and simple art, the restaurant has both a cosy and classy vibe. The food is served tapas style small plates - we ordered pretty much everything on the menu and it was all delicious. I’d definitely go back! My very fussy parents had a really great time too.

Fantastic food, service, setting. Can't complain about anything. Feel bad it was so quiet on a Thursday evening. Pray people read this and go. All food was a class apart from most things I've had in Cornwall. This was chapping on Michelin territory. The best course was the pork tenderloin with pan haggerty. We ordered another. I can't gauge pricing at the moment as inflation makes it impossible to define what is expensive anymore, but it seemed reasonable given we had a wide range of dishes. Waitress really helpful and friendly without being intrusive. GO HERE! IT'S GREAT!

Highly accomplished cooking. Beautiful dishes, presented with great care and delicious local flavours. A lovely venue, reminding us of a south european setting, very cosy and welcoming. We shared a number of small plates but the tasting menu also looked amazing. Highlights were the scallop dish and the Purple Sprouting Broccoli. We tried both puddings and they were both exquisite. Relaxed and attentive service, would highly recommend the whole experience.

Underwhelming. Having expected so much I was simply underwhelmed. The welcome and service was just ok. One of the restaurant staff was very pleasant. Another apathetic and another very shy and timid. Not once were we asked how our food was. For a very small restaurant that's just unforgivable. With less than 10 tables you should be checking on each table regularly. Food was nice, however we found a number of dishes very salty. Salt does not compensate for taste. Service was surly, impersonale. The food, whilst decent was not always appetising, salty, and lacking in depth. The best dish was the crispy polenta. We visited for a special occasion. Would I return? Probably not.

Fantastic food and service. The place is tiny, so make sure to book ahead of time. They offer 70GBP 6 courses menu or small plates. The plates aren't that small, though. We had 2 dishes each, and 2 desserts, and were full by the end of it. Scallops, sirloin steak and crab were all very interesting. And for dessert make sure to try the custard tart. It's something special.

Dinner. What's the true definition of a hidden gem? Well, we found one in a basement off the high street in Falmouth. With a beautiful, bright and airy interior. It's been open just about two years now. When choosing a place to dine out,we like to check out the credentials of the chefs first. These guys CV's are impressive. . There is a tasting menu or a choice of small plates. We decided on the small plates to create our own tasting menu and just about ordered everything. To start, warm Rosemary focaccia and Cornish seaweed butter. A very tasty Sweetheart cabbage with hazelnut butter. Crispy polenta, Cornish mushrooms, paprika mayonnaise. Falmouth carrots, romesco, pangratato, a little al dente. Newlyn John dory with a devine chicken butter sauce. Cornish hake, pea and mint warm tartar that just flaked so delicately. Philip Warrens pork belly, bean cassoulet, green sauce. With the crispiest of skin, not too sure about the beans. Pastured chicken, orzo, nduja was so tender. To finish we had to try the desserts. The Cornish strawberry set cream and the delicious Custard tart. Dishes were served as and when they were ready. The service was relaxed and charming. We said a quick hello to the chefs before we left and were back at hotel all within just over two hours. This is a hidden gem that's well worth seeking out.
