The Neptune

"Kevin Mangeolles is a classically trained chef who works alone in his kitchen and really understands traditional flavour combinations. He’s not trying to reinvent the wheel with his cooking, nor is he trying to challenge your tastebuds or make everything Instagram-pretty; he's simply concerned with what’s in season and what’s available in the local area, which results in dishes that are bursting with flavour and extremely well balanced. Kevin's wife Jacki runs this 18C coaching inn with a calm confidence. There are bedrooms available for those wishing to make a night of it." - Michelin Inspector

Some very nice interesting dishes and some that didnt quite hit the spot. The tomato consomme with sake poached salmon didnt really carry the tomato flavour or the sake. The beef tartare with ras al hanout was particularly good and koshihikari rice with confit egg yoke was delicious. The deep fried plaice was beautifully cooked with a very light crumb but i expected a richer sauce. The sourcing of quality ingredients was obvious and the ambience and service were very pleasant.

Our stay at Neptune was an absolute delight - spacious, well-appointed and comfortable room, beautiful food (both the evening meal tasting menu and their wonderful breakfasts), very friendly and accommodating owners, and exquisite attention to detail throughout the experience. Cannot think of a single thing to change. Would thoroughly recommend!!

5 out of 5. Second visit and didn’t disappoint. Beautiful food, lovely ambiance and the owners Kevin and Jackie are so friendly and attentive. Would highly recommend for any special occasion. Had the taster menu approx 8 or 9 courses. Drinks were reasonable priced. Need another special occasion to visit again.

Just fabulous! The tasting menu was superb, with each course perfectly flavoured and balanced, and leading onto the next. Each dish introduced and served by Kevin. Jacki is so welcoming that you feel like a special guest. They certainly merit their Michelin Star. (We did not stay as we have family nearby.)

Eating and staying at the Neptune is one of our most precious treats. Jacki and Kevin are excellent hosts. The rooms are spotlessly cleaned and well equipped; with quality teas and coffees plus wonderful home made biscuits. The evening meal is created exactly as you'd expect of a Michelin star restaurant: each course is designed to make the ingredients sing to their best. You'll often be served by chef Kevin himself! Jacki is always on the move between tables. Her knowledge of the wine list is well worth exploring, and she recommends by what works and not what is the most expensive. Tables are always yours for the night so you can relax. We're great fans of the coffee and pastries to finish the night... even if we are already full. Breakfast is exactly what you'd expect: cereal, fruit juice, toast, etc except this one has a proper chef creating it. We keep going back!

A fantastic stay and tasting menu meal for to celebrate my mum's recent significant birthday. A very friendly welcome and an absolutely delicious meal with then a very restful sleep in the rooms above. Would definitely recommend and book again.

Yelp
This is a small respite from the crazy city life of London. Took the train up here after a week in the city and it was definitely a welcoming downtime. It's a restaurant with rooms run by a couple who just happening to be a Michelin star establishment. Only a handful of rooms and tables exist and they seem to have a stable of regulars from around the area and a but farther that come to try the cuisine. I had two different meals while staying here, the simpler a la carte the firs night and then the full tasting menu the second. Both were spectacular. It's amazing it is run just by the two of them. They also have a condo they've added to the mix so It looks like I may have to come back with a group to enjoy a longer stay next time.
