Where to Eat in New Orleans’s Algiers Point Neighborhood

"Kenneth Trahan dishes the soul food behind the New Orleans Gumbo Man restaurant, which serves homestyle New Orleans cuisine Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Try the barbecue ribs, smoky brisket, or comforting smothered pork chips with white beans and jambalaya. Might just give mama an’ them a run for their money." - Beth D'Addono

Google
My favorite dish here is by far the gumbo! Whether it's the tender Turkey sausage, the plump shrimp, or the tender chicken, each bite is a symphony of flavors that dances on my palate. The subtle heat of the spices, the earthiness of the roux, and the aromatic herbs, they all come together in perfect harmony, leaving me in a state of pure bliss. 11/10 highly recommend!!

Yelp
Today, I had the pleasure of trying the crab cakes and seafood pasta from The Kitchen. It was delicious. Two nice-sized, well-seasoned crab cakes were served on top of the best seafood (shrimp and lump crabmeat) pasta that I've had in a looooooong time. It came with a nice salad, simple, yet perfect as a side. My friend had the blackened salmon served on top of seafood mashed potatoes with a salad. He was equally pleased. If you haven't been to The Kitchen yet... get there. You won't regret it! Sorry... I forgot to take pics of my crab cakes... too busy digging in.

Yelp
We were in New Orleans and very hungry, and they recommended the kitchen. Small little restaurant. The gumbo flavor was good but a little cold. My friend order cat fish and shrimp it was fried. It had a good flavor, seasoned just right. It came was accompanied by fries and 2 pieces of toast. It was just right. I ordered the blackened salmon and mash potatoes. The mash potatoes had shrimp and pieces of fish. The plate look good. But my mash potatoes were kind of cold for my liking!

Yelp
Food super ! Fresh , interesting dishes . However it was super slow . You can have 2 large dining rooms with one small diner style kitchen .. waitress forgetful .

Yelp
Best kept secret in Algiers. Crab cakes and pasta over a seafood sauce. AWESOME! Food is reasonably priced. Small, clean pleasant atmosphere.

Yelp
Also went here for lunch before one of my required training sessions on the West Bank. Very small restaurant, no menu, but there were the chefs selections written on the blackboard. Not very busy at the time. I ordered the fried catfish + shrimp. Around 20 bucks with tax and tip. Wasn't astounded by this particular dish. Came with fries and bread which served as the grass below the seameat. Dry. The shrimp was very well fried and catfish was tender - you know it was fresh. But lacked taste. I wish I could have tried some of the other dishes but rather too expensive to add something else on, especially for a midday meal. I do want to come back here and try one of the better dishes.

Yelp
This place was awesome home cooked food. The price was a bit more than usual for what seemed to be low end ingredients or just a basic supper plate. But definitely worth the try.

Yelp
Ate lunch here and I will most definitely return. I had the blackened salmon with seafood mashed potatoes and it was perfect. Its the type of dish you'll pay $20+ at a restaurant and its only $15 here. Their bread pudding might be the best i ever had!

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing Jerome the server is on point with everything he does not miss a beat Bruce it's time you pay him cause he is the best server you ever had I'm a regular so I know the food here is outstanding five star service and the price is great you can't go wrong with anything on the menu I always leave Jerome a 10$ or 20$ tip every time we go eat here. Words can not explain how great the food is here Bruce is one of the top chefs in New Orleans hands downs . Bruce if you are reading this pay Jerome he deserves a raise the man is great and you are doing a wonderful job with this restaurant keep up the wonderful work!!!

Yelp
This was the first time I've been here and I will definitely be coming back again and again! The server Jerome ( I think was his name) was right on point. We ordered the gumbo which was delicious, but the fried green tomatoes with the crawfish sauce was the best! We also ordered the seafood mash potatoes which were so good that I'm going back to order some to take back to California! The Kitchen will be the place I come to when visiting on the West Bank and New Orleans!

Yelp
I stumbled onto this place on my way to Chubbie's fried chicken. I'm glad I did. Great food, reasonable prices, and great service. I will be back.

Yelp
I wanted so bad to be able to give this place 5 stars, especially after the rave reviews I'd received on it. But I simply cannot. I've visited there twice. I had the blackened salmon and seafood potatoes the first time, and the catfish plate the second time. Both times the food was good. Good, not great. Also, both times the server offered me the same excuse for the food taking so long. "We only have one cook today". I truly understand things happen, but the food took 40 minutes and there was only one person ahead of me. I will likely visit again, for the sake of supporting small business. But do not visit this place if you are on a tight schedule, like on your lunch break or have an appointment.

Yelp
I'm so ashamed that we never tried this place before. It's one of the few places where you really can use the term "Off the beaten Path". It is a true hole in the wall with a dining room not much larger than my living room. Located in the same stip-mall as the Honey Whipped Donut place that I reviewed before (goood donuts, btw). Ambiance-wise, it's like most small little places started on a shoe-string budget but with a lot of heart. And it looked clean to us. I got a peek into the kitchen which looked efficient and tidy. Our waitress (pronounced Neesha, no idea how it's spelled) was adorable and knew the menu and all the chef's specials off the top of her head and could answer questions about them. I hope no one scoops her up for a different restaurant. Her sweetness and eye for detail really fit this restaurant. On Wednesdays, they do liver and mash. Pretty much liver and onions with smashed potatoes. There are not whipped potatoes. These have chunks in them, just the way I prefer. I don't want to be able to eat my potatoes through a straw unless they are the French whipped potatoes that are half (mostly) butter. Since the last liver I had was at the Wabbit, and it was terrible, I was really happy with the portion size and the quality of the liver. It was THIS close to being too salty at first taste but once you shew and everything mingles, I realized it was just perfect. It was creamy inside with great texture on the outside. The gravy was actually perfection on the potatoes. The Girly got the sliders. It's pretty much a 6 inch poboy bun cut in halves. One side is spicy sausage and the other side is fried oysters. Both sides were great. They came with fries and the Girly was really happy with both presentation and flavor. I stole a bite of her Sausage one and I may have to get that for lunch soon. So both of us got great meals with perfect portion size (like when it arrives you think it's too small but when you finish you can't really eat any more without feeling bloated). Both meals were 16 bucks....together. I'm serious. DON'T YOU CALL ME A LIAR! P.S. Please ignore the menu listed on Yelp and other sites. SOMEONE planted a disgusting fake menu and Yelp has yet to take it down. It is out of the way in an area that most EastBankers don't go around but for a good meal, why not venture to the BestBank and give it a try? They do close early. That's the only bad part. But I'm old and eating dinner after 7:30 it not for me. Gimme that Sr citizen's meal any day. I would recommend this place for people who like comfort foods and friendly service without breaking the bank. And many of the specials are quite upper-class. Or at least upper-class people said they were. How would I know?

Yelp
Off the beaten path but the food is excellent!! Everything that came to the table was fantastic and the presentation of the food was not what you expected when you walked in. I loved the cabbage and pork loin. My crew and I cannot wait to visit again. I've heard that the hours have been extended - I look forward to having dinner there during the week.

Yelp
We had our Algiers One-Meet and Eat there on Friday night 8-25-17 It was our first time trying this place, the Fried Green Tomatoes are awesome and the RedBeans and rice with Smoked Sausage and Corn Bread was like home cooking, delicious We liked it so much that we went back on Saturday and I had the Colossal Burger, it's exactly what it sounds like, huge and delicious, she had the crabmeat stuffed pepper with Mac n Cheese I wanted to try the stuffed pepper she had but that burger filled me up I'll try it next time

Yelp
I found a jewel oneday. I ventured out in the rain, didn't want to go too far, and without crossing the bridge I found "The Kitchen". Located in a strip mall situation at 4801 General Meyers in Algiers, the place is really nice in a neighborhood kind of way. I loved the jazz music in the background and the art motif, yeah, for real. They only do lunch now, but after hours, with the tables candles lit, I could see a Friday and Saturday Night date place. This is New Orleans Creole with a flair. I had one of the chef's specials which was as down home as having a crawfish and sausage sauce, but the sauce was as fine and light as a French bistro. The blackened chicken breast was tender, grill carterized for flavor, and strategically precut so only a fork was necessary, and the pasta perfect. The rest of the menu is both traditional new orleans and entres that demonstrate the chef's complex background. I am so glad I found this place, very affordable, very pleasant and five or six minutes away... tops! Soul food is almost always a delight and this food lives up to that supposition. there's a great take out business but a shame that eat in seems to be wanting. I know most eastbankers won't make the trip to learn what Algerian's have in this secret hideaway, but it's our loss. Chef is extremely gentle and hospitable plus talented as expressed by his dishes. Read somef the other reviews to verify my thoughts. Parking in large lot in front.

Yelp
The stuffed peppers and white chocolate bread pudding are this life, heaven, and the afterlife. Never disappointed!

Yelp
This place is the BOMB. EVERYTHING I've ever had here the few times I've gone has been AMAZING! It's a must do everytime I'm home.

Yelp
Great spot on the West Bank for Creole and soul food! Today, I ordered mustard greens and rice with a fried porkloin. The greens were well-seasoned and the porkloin was battered and fried w/ love! My partner ordered the stuffed bell pepper with mac, peas and potato salad. He was expecting it to be stuffed with ground beef, but pleasantly surprised to find crab and shrimp instead! Very tasty. Nice, clean, pleasant ambience with smooth jazz playing. Friendly service. We'll be back!

Yelp
We tripped over this restaurant while looking for a rest home to see a relative. We'd been afraid we'd have to settle for McD's and we didn't want to waste one single meal time on anything less than delicious NOLA fare. We walked in, clearly looking unsure because some other local patrons volunteered to share with us that they considered it to be the best food in New Orleans. I have to say that it was definitely the very best meal we had while there and we ate at some of the very well-known popular restaurants that are there. Eat here.

Yelp
The best food on the westbank! This restaurant will shock you! Presentation is beautiful and the taste is as if it was a five star restaurant. The service is friendly and warm. I will bring all of my out of town guests here to experience the great flavor of New Orleans!

Yelp
My three friends and I stumbled upon this place by accident, as his GPS went haywire and kept trying to make us board a ferry for every restaurant we clicked on. That GPS gave us a gift. We all four got different dishes and all came away agreeing it was the best meal any of us had eaten in a long time. Perhaps the only thing more shocking that the quality of the food was the price. Even with two people getting deserts, our individual bills all totaled less than $20. The Kitchen is now a must visit for all of us any time we visit New Orleans.

Yelp
Horrible....restaurant cooks everything in the microwave. If you sit near the kitchen door you can hear the ding of the microwave and your food will be out shortly after. We really wanted to like this place, but couldn't get over the excessive use of the microwave. Avoid this place unless you like your food cooked in a microwave.

Yelp
Went there last night and was very impressed! Super friendly people and a great deal. I definitely recommend it, especially to my Algiers neighbors!!

Marti L.

Yelp
Just discovered a jewel and will be back. Didn't get to try the Mac N Cheez...... Didn't get to try the pasta that my friend had..... Didn't get to try the fried green tomatoes I saw at the next table.... Prices were good, too! Super friendly staff.

Yelp
Awesome food, very friendly environment! Down home cooking at it's best!!! You it's visit this Algiers Jewel!

Yelp
Delicious! Nice, clean restaurant, good service, and most importantly, great food! Came here for lunch and had a freshly-cooked, well thought-out dish at a surprisingly reasonable price. I was just in the area for a meeting so I stopped in, but I'd make a special trip to eat here again.
