Raise a Glass to Women’s History Month at These Houston Cocktail Bars | Eater

"The New Potato on the East End prides itself on being a warm and inclusive neighborhood haunt with a well-chosen draft beer list and cocktails that are willing to take a few risks. The Edith’s Secret, a perfect crossover cocktail for the winter-to-spring shift as well as Women’s History Month, intensifies the dusky notes of Zacapa No. 23 Rum with Calvados, then brightens everything up with lemon, cinnamon, turbinado sugar, and a touch of aquafaba to enrich the texture." - Taylor Tobin

For my dog Syri and I, every Friday is a ritual that includes going to The New Potato to grab a steak from Butts n’ Stuff and having an old-fashioned as an introduction to the weekend. The staff are very kind and welcoming, the patrons incredibly friendly and talkative, and the atmosphere outstanding for people and furry friends alike. The New Potato stands as the neighborhood watering hole for the East River neighborhood and is incredibly charming; its divey atmosphere is comparable to an old friend that you haven’t seen in a while and good keep you up all night sharing stories. East River 9 may be the upscale option for food and drinks, but The New Potato is the location clearly built on relationships and hospitality that will keep you coming back every time.

One of Houston's best bars, no doubt. Great drinks, great bartenders, great space. Pretty great view too! Though no food is offered from the bar itself, they regularly have food trucks/options available that are always great. Dog friendly too!

I have been at this place a lot of times. Good cocktails and a very good beer selection. Small pub with an amazing patio. The staff is nice a friendly.

Nice small bar. As far as I can tell, everyone there was very nice and kind. Not a huge beer selection but jad some decent liquor. The outdoor area is quite large and is a good place to hangout on nice warm days.

Google
It was my first time there last night. I will definitely come back. The night weather was perfect with all their lights around the place. You can see the downtown skyline. Just gorgeous 😍. The only thing I didn't like was their beer selection. Well, really, it's because they didn't have Michelob. Not enough to take a star away, though

Google
Food truck Thursday (Steak Night!) and other random nights. Great selection of draft beers and cozy cocktails. Small inside but massive patio and back area. Great views for downtown skyline sunsets! Pet and pot-friendly :)

Talon

Google
Very good vibes! Fair selection and really cool staff. Small bar but toms and tons of space outside, great on a warm night. Could easily host a huge group no problem

Google
Really cool spot. Super chill, but energetic if that makes sense. We went for steak night and the food was delicious. 10/10 would go again.

Yelp
The New Potato is a neighborhood gem. I've been coming to this bar for years as one of my close friends lives just a couple of blocks away and now I too have moved into the area. While some might classify the bar as a dive, it really is much more elevated than that without being assuming. The bar has a number of higher end liquors at reasonable prices. Their gin selection is impressive. For whiskey try their Bardstown offerings or Beyoncé's SirDavis (while it might be a celebrity brand, show some Htown pride, it's good!) They have multiple beers on tap and in bottles and if you're a local, you will come to learn that this is a favorite evening spot amongst the St. Arnold's workers. Outside of liquor and beer, they also have a number of great cocktails. My friend's husband loves their old fashioned and my girlfriends and I often order their espresso martinis made with fresh espresso and topped with a thick layer of foam from being hand shaken. Excellent! The bar has a comfortable inside and a large outdoor patio with a great view of downtown. During the summer they have weekly crawfish boils which can draw a large crowd. Parking is available onsite and is plentiful on the street in front. Without a doubt, you will continue to see me at TNP! Cheers!

Yelp
First time at TNP and I'll definitely be back ! Location/parking : I love that there are more and more things I'm discovering in east Houston! TNP is perfect as its own spot but also for a night cap after listening to music at East River (which is what I did) Parking felt a bit complicated. There seemed to be some street parking around but I wasn't sure if it was an option, so I tried to pull into a dirt lot I saw other cars parking in. Needless to say it didn't work out so well for me - my car got stuck in the mud and left me with a moment of anxiety as I tired to get out... That was the only negative experience for me though ! Venue: From the outside it seemed pretty small but it's much larger than expected ! There's and indoor and outdoor bar. The indoor bar has restrooms and some seating. Outside there is tons of seating and in back as well. Staff: I only ordered from the inside bar and the bartender there was awesome ! He also seemed very excited to make some creative drinks which was awesome and unexpected Other things to note: There was a dj for a while when we arrive It's dog friendly !

Yelp
Hadn't been here in years and it's still as great as I remembered. The bartender was quick and attentive. The bar itself is a nice space full of nice ambient lighting. There's also a large space outside with another bar and plenty of space to sit and relax. Didn't realize it was karaoke night which was a bonus in my book (Thursday night). The crowd was full of different types of people so it made for a great night of karaoke. I will definitely be going back.

Yelp
Great, fresh espresso martinis. NO cold brew. Nice view of the city. I recommend ordering food via DoorDash or Uber eats if there is no food truck. Kevin is also a good DJ

Yelp
Best pub! Friendly and great variety and specials. I almost don't want to review so I can keep it to myself it's so awesome!

Yelp
If you like a chill a neighborhood bar without much offerings other than good drinks this is a low key spot for you ... if not this many not be the spot for you ... . the inside of the bar is small, dark, and dated .... And a bit hot in the summer weather ... there's not sufficient A/C . May feel good if you visit in the fall Most patrons were outside . The drinks were great Bartender was attentive
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
I stop here when I work in the neighborhood. They always have new and worthy drafts and spirits and the bartenders know what to recommend. Most of the seating is outdoors either on the veranda or at the picnic tables. If you like dogs, this is the place.
google avatar

Joe R.

Yelp
Love this place! Super friendly bartender and she knows how to make a drink. Click their cocktail menu and huge area to take your dog. Would visit again.

Yelp
This bar is an okay spot. Honestly, if the bartender seemed to give a dang about bartending, they'd probably be getting 4 stars. The location is odd. But there's plenty of parking. There's lots of outdoor seating, but most isn't covered, so it's only a good fair weather joint. The bar itself is tiny. And as I mentioned, service was less than stellar. The bartender ignores us for a solid 3 minutes and had a conversation with people not ordering drinks for another few before ever even addressing our presence. It also smelled bad in the bar. The outside space is huge. And the night we went there were people playing with fire, which is loads of fun to watch. It's also dog-friendly, which I love. But there was also a child there, which I do not love. We'll probably go back when the weather is better. But I don't know that I would ever spend any time inside the bar.

Yelp
Great place to chill out with friends, family, etc have a drink, enjoy life. Great vibes.
google avatar

Natasha K.

Yelp
I wasn't impressed by the place. It needs more life to it in all aspects. The interior of the actual bar was very unique but accompanied by a lifeless bartender. He was slow, not friendly and once again lifeless. He didn't seem to want to be there which killed the vibe of the place. They have a large outside patio with a lot of space which is not well used. There is a large tent over most of the green space but it's not utilized well. Maybe get some more outside games? I feel like this place has a lot of potential but more thought needs to be put into it. The white tent needs a good pressure wash as well.

Yelp
Really cool little place. I went there for a little pop-up shop. I grabbed a beer from the bar, which is small inside, but the large outside area makes up for it. I sat outside under the trees, which got prettier as the day turned to night because of the little lights. I also noticed a pair of balls hanging from the tree, so I hope to be right in assuming that it is a male tree (joke.) Interesting decor, little things are hidden here and there to entertain the wandering eye. They are also a really dog-friendly place, and they even have little bowls and stuff outside for your fur babies. I find it adorable. Apparently, they host a lot of different types of events like shops, car meets, etc. The service was good, but I did not try their food. That will be next on the list when I go back.

Yelp
The New Potato is a cool local bar nested in the neighborhoods in East river. Just as the area is growing so is this bar. The regulars continue to grow because a lot of the regulars make you feel at home. They allow food vendors to come by, some vendors have committed to coming by on various days and they all do a great job to compliment the cozy and chill environment at the bar. The staff are great and attentive and make some great cocktails. I've even seen some people come in and play the game of letting the bartender make a cocktail based off of your preferences of flavor and wow are they good. What's even more cool is the size of the space in their yard for dogs but also events. This is an amazing event space. The New Potato has also invited more artists out to use the space, bringing art vendors, live artists and DJ events that even bring their own visuals! If you want a place to just kick back and relax and enjoy some nice weather or a place to hang with friends and let the dogs loose, it's a place worth checking out if your in the area.

Yelp
We attended a wedding at The New Potato over the weekend, which was a whole lot of fun. As an event space, they offer a ton of outdoor space to work with. The outdoor bar was part of the wedding concessions but the actual standalone bar was still open to the public. I'm not sure if you're able to rent out the entire place, but even with the setup like this, it worked well. There are picnic tables aplenty, a small wooden stage and the previously mentioned outdoor beer bar and then the real bar. The real bar offered a fairly impressive whiskey selection especially considering their tiny footprint. The bartenders were friendly, very knowledgeable and more than happy to chat up our crowd of bourbon hounds about what they had. Beyond bourbon you're covered by all the usual suspects for spirits, craft beers and wine. There's limited indoor seating, maybe 2-3 tables but plenty of outdoor options. Overall great relaxed casual East Houston bar. It reminded me a ton of West Alabama Icehouse if that helps anyone make a decision on expectations.

Yelp
Awesome place. Came for karaoke, old fashions were great, and plenty of room to chill.

Yelp
I would really only recommend this place for locals. It is a very neighborhood centric establishment. If you are from anywhere outside of the east end and you are not a regular, they do treat you very differently. It is not a friendly or welcoming atmosphere whatsoever. If you are catching a movie at Moonstruck drive-in, then I suggest going to pop in and get a drink there. But otherwise this is not a destination to go to whatsoever.

Yelp
The space is beautiful, large open space. Friendly staff. No food tried. Dog friendly

Yelp
Come to off the beaten path and find this little hidden gem. Well little might be something you think if you just head into the bar itself which holds a small standing to up to around 10ish ppl and a bar long enough for 5 patrons. At the bar there isn't extravagant amount of alcohols to choose from, but of what they do have is a selection...Mac 12/Green-Yellow Dot/Belvedere/ for example - they also have 29 craft taps to choose from, not sure about if there was a wine selection. My friend order and old fashion with Bulleit Rye and he expressed how mich he enjoyed. A couple of the ingredients was mention by the bartender was made in house to spruce the flavor of the Old fashioned, the cherry is one and the other piece eludes me. I enjoyed sipping on my neat Yellow Dot. We also really enjoyed their music playlist...bringing us back to more simpler times with tunes from Michael McDonald and A-ha. The ladies holding down the bar this night were really fun and friendly and filled with info/details behind the drinks they poured. This being a neighborhood bar the locals were pretty friendly also, engaged in convo on the history and future of TNP and their adventure into being welcomed into this place. Now moving to the outside...since it was a little chilly and wet I didn't really cast my eyes too much of what was going on there, but according to some ppl it is very vast, holding roughly 200+ ppl, has corn hole and few other games, lots of picnic benches and even a stage. I did notice connected to the front of the bar they had some outside seating looking out towards the road which as of right now there isn't much to see, but from what I hear is developing might change all that. Kitchen - not sure, though they do have a l of outside popups from steaks to tacos where they freshly make the tortillas right in front of you I hear. Didn't capture the different ones but it sounds like something goes on here somewhere around 4-5 times a week. This is my friends favorite neighborhood bar and I can truly see why...definitely will be back!!! Hmmm forgot to take pics other then this fam of potato heads

Yelp
Cute bar, with nice yard space ! I really enjoyed the openness that the bar's yard had to offer. Definitely both dog and family friendly. I was with a rather large party, and it was easy to accommodate all of us. I ordered a burger and honestly, my expectations were not that high. I was pleasantly surprised on how tasty it was! The bun had a great flavor, and the "secret sauce" gave the burger a great unique taste to it. The place has a private lot, so parking is not a hassle. Staff is also very helpful, and friendly. Definitely will be returning.

Yelp
Great mixed drinks and craft beers at a very reasonable prices. Fun neighborhood bar and cool crowd.

Yelp
Really cute and chill spot to have drinks at if you're looking for something very laid back. They have a great patio/outdoor area where you can also bring your pets. Great staff, extremely friendly. The bartender even came out back to check on us a couple of times and made sure to fill up the water bowl for the dogs. I will definitely be back!

Kellye A.

Yelp
A friend and I came for Puff and Paint. We got rained out but had a great time sitting inside the bar hanging out afterwards. We will be returning in the future.

Yelp
Went by TNP for the first time one night. It was busy enough but not packed. We found street parking nearby; the private lot is very small. Happy the place is dog friendly (part of why we chose to stop by since we had our pup with us). Always appreciate dog friendly spots. White lights hanging outside, open grassy area, a wooden stage for live music I assume although none the night we went and picnic tables scattered. A group was playing bean bag toss/corn hole. Also saw a bowling slip n slide. Nobody was using it at that hour, but looked like it had been used earlier in the day. A good size lawn for yard games. There was a taco food table under a tent people were ordering from. I don't think TNP serves food. The inside seating is very limited. Mostly an outdoor spot. My husband felt they had a good beer selection. We only had one drink because it was very buggy. Some citronella candles would help. It's far out of our way so we likely wouldn't stop by on a whim. It's a chill place if you're with a few people looking for a mellow place to have drinks outside.

Yelp
What a cute little bar this is. It is tucked away all by itself, and I would consider more of a locals spot at this point. On the corner of Clinton and Bringhurst you will find Paul the Irish owner of The New Potato. He is very welcoming and knowledgeable about his beers. They have a pretty nice selection of local brews and other spirits. My visit only lasted 30 minutes, due to the fact my boyfriend and I were having a drink with his friend before heading out to the ballpark for some Astros fun. I will definitely have to go back. I hear they have good pizza here. Paul says they have certain food trucks here, and he's currently working on getting more to come out. The inside is rather small, but so cozy, and they have a nice front patio and a good sized back patio for more seating. I would suggest coming on a good weather day that way you can enjoy the outside patios. My boyfriend said they had an all you can eat wing contest, that I have no desire to enter, but perhaps that is something up your alley.

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood bar. Great atmosphere, AMAZING drinks and tasty pizza. Come here during SUNSET and stay the rest of the night. I promise you will not regret it. Great place to hold an outdoor event--they have a HUGE backyard with a stage for live performances. Palomo Pit BBQ (they have some of the best ribs on earth) and Plat O Gyros (amazing twist on a gyro...order it swazy) frequently vend here--used to be on Wednesdays and Sundays but I think it's since changed. Last words of advice: ORDER THE OLD FASHION

Yelp
Love the set up and atmosphere of this place. Large gem of an area in back to bring your fur babies and grab a drink alone or with a date or with friends. Great place to gather and socialize, drink, eat and be merry:)

Yelp
We had a wonderful time. Great music and the staff and owner are the best of hosts. We will be back

Yelp
I never knew the old potato but from what the regulars told me, the new potato is better so there you go. I happened to be there on their grand opening night and I thought it was a fun neighborhood bar with a really good vibe. There was plenty of street parking and everybody from the bartender, the people who live in the area, to the owners and their family (from what I was told) were super nice. There is a big backyard area, there is a "boat" patio type thing in the middle, and then an indoor section with a patio facing the street so there is plenty of places to go to. The only complaints I had were that the TV was showing some random channel when there was a Rockets game going on. I was told by my friend that it's because they use some sort of streaming service so they can't just change the channel like a TV but at this point I would rather not even have a TV there. Fortunately, we were playing Dallas and they were an easy to team to beat so I wasn't too worried. The biggest issue however was the bathroom. For a huge place like this, there was only ONE working Unisex bathroom. Supposedly the other one got blown up by someone who just had to go #2 in a bar and then bad things happened and they had to shut it down. Seriously, who goes #2 in a bar?? (someone who really needs to go #2!). Anyhoo, I will come here again...much better than the Moon Tower Inn. It's not even close.

Yelp
The New Potato couldn't have opened at a better time. Thanks to Yelp, we discovered it during an East End bike ride/bar crawl - and we were thirsty on that muggy Houston night! The bar features one of the best and well groomed green spaces the East End - and the Houston bar scene - has to offer. And it will be FANTASTIC come fall patio season. I think they should offer pony rides in the green space. It's that lovely. Instead, you'll find just a few picnic tables, minimal lighting ... perhaps some bocce ball or other backyard games in the future? The indoor bar offers beers on tap, cider, wine and spirits. I also noticed a few people noshing on semi-personal-sized pizzas. It's dog-friendly - complete plus. Just scoop your poop, y'all. I'd hate to see their lovely backyard lawn turn into some sort of unkept dog park.
google avatar

Andrea H.

Yelp
For a bar with a patio, this is great. The bartender was super nice when we stopped in before a Saturday night show at Moonstruck Cinema across the street. But I was expecting there would be food, based on the photos on Yelp, and there was nothing except some pre-packaged health food entrees: edible, but not what my hungry crew wanted. Many beer choices, nice bathroom, lots of picnic tables, not much indoor seating. I would come back to drink, never to eat.
google avatar

Abby N.

Yelp
This is a very child and pet friendly hangout spot. It reminds me a lot of the pubs back home. We live in the neighborhood so we swing by here often. There are always a few families with kids for our own children to play with. Being city kids, this is one of the rare spots for them to run after each other in a giant field. The food here is great. They have different food trucks depending on the night and an occasional steak night with meat fresh off the grill. We usually check their FB to see what the food situation will be for the night before deciding to come.
google avatar

Colin S.

Yelp
Such a terrific neighborhood spot. Wide and unique draft beer selection. People were there who came specifically for food truck (Pi Pizza guy), although I did not have any. The inside has interesting (good) decor, and the outside bar has plenty of seating. There is a large outdoor area for dogs. Very casual, chill spot to enjoy a nice weather day.

Yelp
Love this place! I can't think of anything negative to say about TNP! I always have a great time no matter what.
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
Great drinks, great staff, unique beer options. Variety of events. The bartender Paige was great to us and treated us like friends. She made me the best spicy margarita I've ever had with this unique black lava salt. Definitely a neighborhood favorite.

Yelp
I have been trying to get around to writing a perfect review for new potatoes. My boyfriend and his friends love coming here and this has become a new spot to meet up now that we all live in different places in Houston. Paul, the owner knows all of us by names and is so personable (BIG reason why I love coming here..He knows my drink order :)* I was a little hesitant to write my review because this is such a hidden gem in Houston and the more reviews this place gets...the more the younger crowd will start invading and making this into a "midtown bar". The drinks are amazing but the best part of this location is the downtown skyline. We bring our dog on multiple occasions to watch the sunset downtown and its UNBELIEVABLE . Sit out on the picnic tables and have a cold beer and watch the sunset you won't want to leave!
google avatar

Danger D.

Yelp
I love this place. Not only did they overcome the original pi pizza, but everyone makes you feel like family
google avatar

Amar B.

Yelp
Awesome bar with an awesome patio. Service is amazing and owner is humble and makes the most amazing Irish coffee you'll ever have! He's Irish! So he knows the real deal. I can't explain the technique to make the drink but it's not like anything you've seen before. Come come come!
google avatar

Yelp
Stellar! Abundant seating even with an engagement party going on. Cocktails are delicious and it's a beautiful down town view. The food truck Voodoo Mama was excellent...... our favorite crawfish yet. Staff are all very friendly and jovial. A new favorite spot!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Maybe the friendliest bar in Houston. Certainly my favorite right now. Relaxed, hyper-local, huge outdoor area... just about perfect.
google avatar

Shelby L.

Yelp
The New Potato is everything I love in a bar. They have great craft cocktails and beer, an awesome dog friendly patio, great pizza, a fantastic playlist, a sexy dark interior, and a really personable staff (the owner has a sexy accent to boot). All this and plenty of parking around the bar. Really, what more could you ask for?
google avatar

Priscilla P.

Yelp
Great place to relax with a craft cocktail or beer. They've got a quaint covered patio and a huuuugggeeeeee outdoor area that is dog friendly! There's usually a food truck or steak night going on.
google avatar

Lanha T.

Yelp
Nice place to grab a beer and chill outside. Plenty of parking and pet friendly. It'll be better once the weather cools down and less mosquitos from all the rain. A few seats available inside but mainly everything is outdoor minus the bar and restrooms. Bartenders serve drinks quickly and considerate cranking out cups of ice water for a local bike club.
google avatar

S P.

Yelp
Best neighborhood bar. Period. Delicious pizza, bartenders are amazing and make amazing drinks, the entire vibe of this place is just perfect. Food trucks on weekends, great music, perfect place, good parking... I just love it here.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place with good food and delicious drinks. They make an authentic whiskey sour that will make you say WOW! This is a great spot to have a small get together with friends. It has a laid back atmosphere with a friendly staff and amazing bartenders.

Kristi N.

Yelp
Look at this! They have a wonderful lighted patio and a pretty little cat to keep you company. :)
google avatar

Kristy L.

Yelp
Robert is an excellent bartender. The drinks come out amazing and delicious every time. In addition there's food trucks parked out front if you need a quick bite. Will need to park in the grass or on the side of the bar though. Other than that, great bar!
google avatar

Trish F.

Yelp
No juke box. Bartender runs the playlist and that's fine by me, she's doing just fine! Love it!!!! Small & cozy, just like i like it. We will be back.
google avatar

Keri S.

Yelp
Very cool backyard style bar. Lots of outdoor seating and a stage area for live music. The bartender Russel was very nice and hospitable. If you're looking for a fun outdoor bar with a chill vibe this is your spot.

Yelp
Great owner/bartender. Really good selection of whiskeys, solid beer list, and the mixed drink I had was delicious. Definitely going back.
