Best Places to Eat and Drink in Northern Michigan for Viewing Fall Leaves | Eater Detroit

"For classic Harbor Springs chic, I reserve a table at the New York — the dining room (emerald green walls, Tiffany lamp pendants, white tablecloths) is where to see and be seen, and the perfectly executed wagyu strip is a standout." - Stacey Brugeman

Google
First time @ The New York Restaurant. Very enjoyable dinner! Started with a so so corn chowder and a simple salad. Our main entree was the fresh swordfish (excellent sauce) and the herb roasted chicken, fingerling potatoes, balsamic onions, both delicious! Dessert was a fresh peach crisp (fantastic) with vanilla ice cream. Although the interior of this historic building is absolutely beautiful, the only issue is that the chairs are the most uncomfortable I have ever sat on for dinner.

Google
Great service, some really good things are here. The beacon jam was really good and the scallops were cooked perfectly. The bread and butter was delicious, and the drinks were perfect. Unfortunately the perfect cut of steak I ordered was a bit more cooked than a medium rare, there was too much of the heart of the red lettuce in the beet salad,, and the hair like substance found in the wife's fish was a bit off-putting. Maybe we caught them in an off night.

Google
New to this restaurant, came highly recommended but unfortunately we were underwhelmed. Service was good. Felt it was priced high for what you get and flavors were lacking. Dessert was also a miss…sorry to say we won’t be back.

Google
How could you not love this place? Food is excellent and service is good

Ray Terwilliger

Google
Outstanding fine dinning experience tonight! Kari and the rest of the staff provided impeccable service. We will certainly revisit next time we're in the area. The perfect place to celebrate my 3 year anniversary to the love of my life...

Google
Outstanding salmon, good filet mignon - great, attentive service at the bar! Certain entrees are b1g1 between 5:00 and 5:30. Reservations are apparently required, though - we got the last two seats at the bar, while 3 tables sat empty the whole time we were there. It got very loud and crowded at the bar toward end of our meal.

Rick Kraus

Google
Yes, there are still restaurants that have menus that don't include ten different burgers and pizzas but instead have a nice assortment of individual entrees that are each different. The entrees show that there are some people in the kitchen that know what they are doing in making creative and tasty entrees with delicious accompanying sauces. You can't go wrong here. It's the best restaurant in Harbor Springs. Service is great, too. Jackie did a fine job.

Google
We've been wanting to try this place for quite a while. They were open Sunday, and worth the wait. Wedge salad, filet mignon, apple dessert. Glass of wine. Perfect end of day stop near Petoskey.

Yelp
Interesting historic dining room, that has an upscale eating feel. All dishes were fantastic, the duck was tender and juicy. Quick service for a great dinner downtown

Yelp
There are just so many better options in harbor springs lol. This place is such a trap, small portions, mediocre food at best, and very over priced. The staff is also extremely arrogant, I admit we were a little under dressed after skiing but we could obviously see the judgement in the eyes of the staff. Go to Piersons, go to pier, go to the depot, hell go to bar harbor. This place isn't worth it.

L O.

Yelp
We absolutely love this restaurant. The atmosphere and friendly staff keep us from coming back over 40+ years. The food is delicious and they come out with a new menu each every month or so and it's alway fun to come back and try something new! I would highly recommend trying to make a point to go to The New York Resturant when you come to Harbor Springs.

Yelp
Always a great local spot we usually make it once a week. All local long term staff that really care! The tomato salad or wedge is great. The roasted chicken is fabulous. The French fries are excellent I think Matt must change the oil a lot!! Very noticeable. The veal is great and the steak too! Highly recommended. We do try to dress accordingly.

Yelp
If I could leave zero stars I would. So we were coming for my 60ith birthday and had reservation for 6. After waiting over thirty minutes and watching larger parties arriving after us be seated I asked when our table would be ready. The manager indicated that we would need to wait until the party occupying a certain table was finished. I was told "this is Harbor Springs in the summer suck it up." I kind of felt like John Candy in the movie summer vacation waiting for lobster. The exceedingly arrogant unprofessional staff told me that they were trying to accommodate us. I said we were trying to accommodate them as well. The then said they wouldn't seat us and called the police. At least it wasn't an important birthday, did have a great meal at the bar across the street , Bar Harbor. Great staff food and drinks. Go there instead.

Trixie N.

Yelp
A companion and I ordered the lamb chops, described as "lollypop" chops, expecting well-frenched, succulent lamb chops. Instead we got heavy, extremely fatty, so-so chops which required surgical extraction of the meager amount of meat in the serving. Very disappointing. Our third companion was happy with her fish order and the service was adequate.

Yelp
Consistently good. Servers well trained, efficient, friendly. Food is one of the best in northern Michigan. Whitefish and walleye are favorites of ours. Check out their specials. Oysters are always fresh.

Joanne D.

Yelp
My husband and I had an excellent dinner at The New York. The service was excellent. A special thank you goes to our server Ruth. She clearly describes the preparation of any dish that interests you. Her wine recommendations were right on. She is pleasant and welcoming. Herbs are freshly picked from garden boxes around the restaurant. Arugula salad is a great salad before dinner. They will divide it if you want to share . Desserts are all made in house. Coffee is also excellent.

Yelp
It's great getting recommendations whether its from friends or from Yelp. Some friends who knew we were going to Harbor Springs said that we had to try the New York Restaurant. So we did! Happy to have a reservation on a very busy Saturday night, we were taken to out table right on time. Our server greeted us almost immediately and brought us some warm bread and took our drink orders. I thought The New York offered a well thought menu with favorites for almost any palette. On recommendation, my wife ordered the Lamb Shank and enjoyed it immensely. I did not set out thinking I'd order the Baby Back Ribs rather expecting to order Sautéed Whitefish. The white wine, caper presentation had me drooling a couple of days earlier when we first inspected the menu. What caught me about the ribs was the house made cherry barbeque sauce. The sauce was magnificent adding a wonderful but not overpowering cherry flavor to the meaty ribs. Substituting fresh vegetables for mashed potatoes made the dish perfect. I've mentioned this before and I will again: Since COVID, I've noticed a rather dramatic uptick in server quality. As a matter of fact, I cannot remember the last meal where the service wasn't at least excellent or better. This was true at The New York. Service was great to the point that you know it enhanced your dining experience. Loved it, will be back next time we're in Harbor Springs.

Yelp
We really like the New York. Has nothing to do with the fact that I used to live in NYC. Over the years, the food has been a little up and down, but for the past year it has consistently been excellent. I've always wanted to try the Shaking Beef and finally did last week. OUT. STANDING!! In every way! Pro Tip: Do NOT mix the basmati rice in with the strips of tenderloin, saute'ed red pepper & onions blended with a deliciously sweet & hot Thai pepper sauce!! I love spicy food but you REALLY need the relief of the plain basmati rice to cut the heat! Most other items on the menu are also delicious, but my wife was disappointed with her Shrimp Provencal, remarking that it was bland. I took a taste and, while the shrimp was well-cooked, there was definitely a lack of flavor. Lovely ambience. Service is always outstanding, and there is an excellent, albeit, overpriced by-the-bottle wine list. Stick to by-the-glass. Cocktails are decent but the hummers are fabulous! Reminiscent of the original at the Yacht Club in Detroit!

Yelp
Attempted to dine at the New York on a recommendation from another restaurant in town. I approached the hostess stand and asked how long the wait would be for a family of 3. The hostess (older women with blondish-gray hair which was pulled back and wearing a yellow dress) ignored my question and addressed the couple directly behind us. She then turned to me and asked if I had a reservation which I replied no. She looked at my attire (long shorts, t-shirt & sweater) and stated, "a very long time" which I replied, what does that entail? "Two hours at least". Unfortunately I will never dine there ..... never judge a book by its cover!!
google avatar

Teemaree ..

Yelp
Incredibly prepared food, in an upscale historic location, that was also friendly to us casually dressed out of towners.

Yelp
A few complaints here. Ordered Shrimp Provencale at $34.00. 5 decent sized shrimp seemed okay but only a VERY small amount of linguine. Certainly not enough for a dinner portion. More like an appetizer size. Left very hungry. The salad chopped was decent. Service was okay not great. Made a mistake and charged for an extra portion of bread and butter which they took off bill. Charged split fees which is not mentioned on menu or anywhere. For the price of the dinner entries one would think they would not have to sneak in split charges. But again they charge for their bread and butter that is a no charge standard in the industry. Bottom line not going back there. Others in the party were happy with the food. Nothing great here especially in light of billing practices.

Yelp
There was a brief moment when I couldn't eat here because of a new manager. But he's gone and the place is back to its excellent food and friendly service. I love coming here whenever I'm town.

Chris B.

Yelp
Always fantastic! We had a party of seven on Wednesday night, Bobby was our server and his friendly demeanor, attitude and recommendations made the night even better. Always a favorite of ours when we're in town. Thanks as always!

Yelp
My husband took me out for my birthday. Had an excellent dinner! Our waitress Allison was excellent and very attentive to our needs. We were also greeted by the owner, Matt. This is true customer service at its finest. Love this place. We will definitely be back. Thank you Allison and Matt for making my birthday dinner exceptional.

Yelp
We were in Harbor Springs for a week long vacation and went here on Wednesday 7/20/22 at 5:30pm last minute before returning on M119 to The Highlands. We had a week of great restaurant experiences but I wish we could have this one back, should have skipped it, there are other places we could have went where we would have a happy memory. The host is the main problem here. I don't appreciate being looked up and down (in a beach town and on vacation) when I'm wearing a skirt and a nice top. Tried to call to make a reservation but the guy couldn't hear me and hung up. Ok... should have taken that as a sign. Walked in and the guy acted like he was insulted at the walk in and we had won the lottery because there were 2 tables left, one an aisle and one in the corner, the rest of the restaurant was empty. Everything was reserved? Ok, an hour and a half later there were 3 more parties seated in the entire restaurant. Ok whatever on that management style. The food, mediocre at best. We had far better meals at other restaurants all week (Petoskey and Harbor Springs) for less $$. The waitress I will say, was quite friendly. When we were leaving, my husband made the mistake of asking this same host if dinner is severed at the bar. A host, should know, but the response "how would I know that" and "you would have to ask the bartender" really set me back. Dude walked away. This guy seriously needs to be checked and guess what, we go to Harbor Springs a lot (golf, skiing, beach, wineries, etc.) and I associate The New York with a big fat Nope. Can't wait to try the Willow on our next visit, or squeeze in to the Paper Station if we can. We've been to the Stafford a bit too much but food is good there. I'd rather snack on pizza than waste my money on an uncomfortable experience.

Rosemary S.

Yelp
I love the New York Restaurant. The food is so tasty and the services is also exceptional!!! Rosemary

Yelp
It was OK. Got there at 5 before the festivities in downtown started. We received 25% off because we dined early, unexpected and very nice. 6 oz filet was cooked perfectly at medium temp but was tough. Potatoes were cold, salty and grey. Broccoli was slightly steamed, very crunchy and not seasoned at all. We traveled all day, we were starving and we ate it. We did not complain although server did not check in with us at all. No bread included, did not realize it was on the menu for a charge. It wasn't inedible but it definitely was not good. Probably would not return.

Yelp
The New York is always a pleasure! Atmosphere is the best in Harbor Springs. Such a quaint and cozy bar, with wonderful service. My favorite go to in HS.
google avatar

Jody G.

Yelp
This place has been around forever and it consistently delivers good food. The waitstaff is friendly and informed. Tonight I had the snapper with curry, it was good but could have used a little more sauce. Another of our guests had the Rosemary chicken and it is always good and juicy.

Yelp
We had a party of 7. We drank a lot and had a lot of fun! It's been 10 years since I have eaten at New York. All of our dinner were just excellent and I can speak personally for the the duck I really enjoyed. Tender and moist and very flavorful. Our waitresses excellent. Food all came out together, refills on water and very attentive on drinks. We had trouble lining up an uber and our waitress ended up driving us home, wow great service. I will be back soon!

Joanne R.

Yelp
Our favorite restaurant in Harbor Springs. Great food, interesting menu and service that exceeds expectations!

Yelp
I always prefer to hit a place twice before awarding 5 stars. Still applies. This closer to 4.5 than 4 overall between our twice. 1st night our party of two enjoy the lamb shank, creamed spinch and didn't particularly care for the special of the night - the rib eye. Service from Gerry was top notch and we ask him to reserve us a table for the following evening as well. 2nd night - we're seated in the prime table in front window on a beautiful evening. Our appetizer and meals are top notch! Though $13 for a 4 shrimp cocktail seemed a bit over the top. That cocktail sauce was divine! She chose the filet and I that fabulous lamb shank (again). We're both very pleased. Though Gerry was not our server I sought him out and tipped him for the window reservation - frankly he's the better server. Pro-tips: 1) get seated 30 minutes after they open and your meal is discounted. 2) Get the lamb shank!

Michael B.

Yelp
We have been enjoying New York for meals and service over 45 years. Went last Wednesday for all you can eat crab legs. We just enjoyed the 1-1/2 pound portion, which was more than enough, just delicious and Allison is wonderful and very busy
google avatar

Debbie E.

Yelp
We can always count on New York to deliver! They do offer specials, but sometimes run out early during dinner hour of not only the specials but regular menu items. Guess what - that's how you know their food is always fresh. Tonight the whitefish was deliciously prepared and my brother in law caught the last available order of walleye. They always tell you on arrival if they are running low on any of the dishes and will hurry to the kitchen to snag what you want. The restaurant was born in 1904 and has a wonderful ambiance. A few of the waitstaff has been there for years. Jerry is our favorite. We had lots of water refills and courteous service. We arrived pre-season so getting a reservation for a nice table up front was no problem. Sadly, they discontinued their wonderful brunch years ago. But you can still enjoy a fine dinner with two for one early bird specials.

Yelp
I would say for up north this is an okay spot. Excellent views but lacks real satisfaction that it advertises. The wine selection is nice. We ordered the Caymus but were a little disappointed when they presented a 2017 when the menu said 2015. Not a huge deal but if you know wine... it is. Service is disappointing. We were waiting for our table and went to the bar for a drink. There were plenty of empty spots, it was a Tuesday evening. The bartender ignored us. Like literally ignored me. I had to flag him down to ask for the wine menu and he never returned. Mind you, I had every intention of ordering a $100 + bottle for my husband and myself so I guess it's his loss. Table service was just as disappointing - only brought one of our apps and brought them after our soups and salads once we asked if we were getting them. Mind you we ordered them before our dinner. We got apologies and the bus boy was blamed? Not sure what he had to do with it. Food was all over. The hanger steak was excellent but everything else was mediocre. I would skip the pasta. It said hand made but it was most definitely not. It had set under a heat lamp for a while so the top was hot and the shrimp I had were tough and almost inedible. We also had the lobster bisque. I would skip that. I had one very small piece of lobster and that was it. All together it took 1 hour and 45 mins to get seated (with a reservation) and have our dinner presented. It was a good thing we had our wine! And no, we didn't get dessert.
google avatar

Eric P.

Yelp
Chewy steak Mid well not MR. Needs better seasoning. Lamb Jus could be a little thicker, (barely nappe). A wedge salad can no longer be called a wedge salad, when it is chopped up.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
This place is really terrible. The food is way over priced and never rises above the level of something you would get at a cheap wedding reception. Our waiter was really unkempt and seemed to be a little bit hung over. I would eat anywhere else in Harbor Springs before I would ever go here again.

Ruth S.

Yelp
Great food, great service, good drinks. A steakhouse for sure but their seafood and other options are wonderful. The Duck is sublime, the salmon, however the chef is preparing it, is outstanding, the swordfish, unbelievable. I've never eaten anything here I would not recommend. A must eat at in northern Michigan
google avatar

Caroline D.

Yelp
Our experience was a disaster. They accepted our reservation but they were understaffed and overwhelmed. A 7:30 reservation resulted in a 7:45 seating and not being greeted by a server until 8:00. We were hoping to order a bottle of wine and given the horrible service decided not to spend the money. An even worse mistake was was ordering cocktails and wine by the glass...pure vinegar . The rest of the experience was par for the course. Maybe it was an off night or they have a returning crowd of regulars who don't mind the slow service and sub-par selections...we ended up at a newer place a few doors down the following night and were much better suited.
google avatar

Jane A.

Yelp
The New York is one of my all time favorite restaurants. I have been eating at the New York fir 25 plus years and I have never had one meal that was other than perfect.
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
First let me say the service is impeccable. The food is not. I took one bite of the Shaking Beef and immediately sent it back. The sauce was overly sweet and the rice was overdone. I ordered the Rosemary chicken instead and was told it would be 10 minutes. 30 minutes later the rest of my party is completely finished, the table is cleared, and I have no food. When it finally arrived, it was cooked well but the Rosemary was overwhelming. The free bread and butter was the highlight of my experience, I am sad to say. We won't be going back.

Jim S.

Yelp
This was one of our favorites for years but after waiting several weeks to get a reservation, we came away truly disappointed. My wife had the whitefish and I went with lamb tenderloin with couscous. According to my wife there was nothing wrong with the Whitefish, it tasted like every other sauteed Whitefish dish - nothing special. My lamb was billed as tenderloin but looked like it could have been any cut from shoulder to stew meat. It tasted ok but certainly not like a tenderloin cut should be prepared. The couscous was bone dry, almost like they forgot to finish the dish. All this for some of the highest prices you can pay in HS. My advice would be the Pier, Piersons or Paper Station and enjoy a good meal for an appropriate price. On a brighter note, the service was very good.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
For Hs food and restaurant week food and service were awesome. I had the NY strip with oysters on the half shell to start. The wedge was not the "best ever" but it did okay. Don't expect the ambience to be a Nobu but again for HS this place does the job on a steak house. UpNorth Classic.
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
Classic old school food. We four all had different entrees and all were wonderful. From olives to salads and from cocktails to desserts a solid value and an attentive staff. The front room gives a charming view of downtown Harbor Springs.
google avatar

Doug S.

Yelp
Our favorite place for dinner in Harbor. Great restaurant in a great town. We have never had a bad experience here. The building once housed an old hotel so the atmosphere is certainly a throwback to a bygone era. We always make sure to get a reservation as it does get busy during prime seating times on weekends and holidays. During the Summer months it is often busy during the week as well. Even around peak times you can usually get a reservation when made within the same week. Plan ahead for a larger group. Not every place in town can accommodate a bigger party but New York does it well. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. My wife usually starts with the wedge salad and I prefer the daily soup or another small plate. They have several nightly specials that are always delicious additions to their well appointed regular menu. Their whitefish is very good. Filet is cooked perfectly. Try the shaking beef. It may seem like and odd choice against the rest of the menu but it has the right amount of heat and flavor. Last weekend I had the rack of lamb special and it was flavorful and well seasoned. Good wine selection, small but lively bar with some unique cocktails. Service is always consistently attentive and professional. New York only has seasoned waitstaff. The restaurant has been around for a long time and many servers have made a career here. Everyone on staff is friendly and polite.

Kathleen P.

Yelp
Great food - consistently! Their servers are professional and well trained. The location is convenient to Petoskey as well

Natalie R.

Yelp
Two reasons for a less than ideal review. The restaurant was at WAY MORE than 50% capacity with less than 6' between tables. Second, the entrees were "Good," my husband's pork chop, to really NOT good-my white bean "stew" that was spicy and more like a dry curry. Server Adam was great.
google avatar

Rebekah W.

Yelp
My husband and I ate here 5 years ago while on our honeymoon and then returned last night on our anniversary trip. Both experiences were just okay. The food is good, but not exceptional. Service however was great both times. I just want to add a note about COVID, this was the first time we had been in a restaurant since COVID because we know dining indoors is one of the riskier things you can do. We decided to try it out and hoped we'd feel comfortable. They sat us at a small table where everyone was walking past us constantly. I just kept thinking maybe this table should not be used, there's no way to socially distance when seated in a corridor essentially. The other thing that really bothered me was that they offer small water glasses and then they have the bus boy going around refilling glasses. He picked up my glass to refill it, then my husbands, then walked around and grabbed glasses from 6-8 other people. He did this at least three times while we were there. I feel like a jerk writing a not so great review in a time that is so tough on restaurants, but if you are nervous at all about going out to eat right now like I was, you may not feel 100% comfortable at this restaurant.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Never been to Harbor Springs before. We were looking for an acceptable restaurant and ran across The New York Restaurant and made a reservation. The four of us all had fabulous appetizers and entrees. The duck was outstanding as well as the steak and the pork. Outstanding sauces and sides. The service was more than adequate too. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Ken A.

Yelp
Called ahead and they do not take reservations for the "early special" as they advertised in a local magazine featuring a buy one get one dinner entrée if "seated" between 5pm and 5:30pm. We arrived promptly at 5:10pm and were informed by the hostess that they had too many reservations that evening and the earliest they could seat us would be 6:30pm and as a result would not honor the early special. It was a Sunday and we counted 12 tables open that we could see. The hostess said you can sit at the bar and get food there if you like. We replied, no thanks, left and will not be back. We live in the area and there are plenty of other great places in the area to dine.
google avatar

J D.

Yelp
To be honest. These type of places are not my thing. The "atmosphere" of a high end place with a book for a wine list isn't where I normally go but I was attending a birthday dinner. First thing, my steak was good, the laid the thin frys down and got mooshy with the zip sauce. There must be a better way to serve these! The salad was average. My big issue was the waitstaff. She came and gave waters, we explained 1 of our 14 had canceled. She removed 4 place setting. She left and the runner cane with initial drinks. The rest of the party arrived so they wanted waters, place settings etc. once corrected the runner came 3 more times for refills. The waitress finally came back and ordered drinks.Took over an hour so IDK if it was the bar or she forgot. Anyhow it wasn't the best nor the worst. It just doesn't have the value for the price IMO.
google avatar

Brooke E.

Yelp
The evening was pretty darn mediocre. Maybe our server had too many tables? Maybe they staff down after Labor Day? My husband had the New York strip and said it was good. My dinner was undercooked and our server didn't come back for quite a while, so by the time I could send it back my husband had almost finished. They took my food off the bill but didn't comp us anything. We split a dessert and left. For the price, nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Donald M.

Yelp
Nice little restaurant in a quaint town. Harbor Springs. We went without a reservation and we were greeted warmly and taken to a table within minutes. The service by Gerry was excellent and the food was very good. A nice evening and recommend this restaurant for a more formal dinner. We will return when we are back in Harbor Springs.
google avatar

Sally B.

Yelp
If you're looking for a really wonderful meal in Harbor Springs, The New York is the place. We find it to be consistently excellent. Recently we enjoyed a meal of spicy steamed mussels (in coconut milk!), halibut with red pepper and crab meat couscous, veal chop and cherry chocolate cake. The waitstaff is friendly and knowledgeable. The surroundings are cozy and warm. And they have all you can eat crab legs on Mondays. You won't be disappointed (I hope!).
google avatar

Ingrid P.

Yelp
After more than 20 years, we've finally given up on the New York. The food is fine. Too expensive for how mediocre it's become, but this is Harbor and there aren't many options. It's almost a relief to cross this place off our list, after several unpleasant experiences with Ken, the most recent manager, both offseason in the winter and during the busy summer. He resents his customers, he's rude and impatient and should not be working in the service industry. Go across the street to Pierson's, run by the same family who has Chandler's in Petoskey. It's bar food. It's half the price and equally as good.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
The New York is one of the "fine dining" establishments in HS. I've had the pleasure of dining here twice, with one of the visits being on New Year's Eve. When I go out to dinner on a holiday like NYE, I am not expecting the best service and food ever because, lets face it, the kitchen and waitstaff are usually slammed. Not the case on my NYE visit to the New York. We had a reservation and the 5 of us were seated immediately. The cosmo I ordered was perfect (not too strong) and the wine that we all had with dinner was really good too. Everybody was really satisfied with their meals. They serve fresh whitefish at the NY, and there are three different preparations from which to choose. The lemon/capers combo is the winner in my book. It was really yummy. So try it out, holiday or not. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Food and service were very good! Wedge salad was great. Special mussels were delicious. Very attentive service. Nice wine list
