The Best Restaurants in Oregon’s Willamette Valley | Eater Portland

"Owned by couple Noelle and Sean McKee, the Newbergundian is a down-to-earth little spot just off 99 in Newberg. The menu balances French favorites — croque monsieur, Bouillabaisse, steak frites — with more casual dishes like fish and chips and a hamburger. There’s a comfortable patio and the prices are comfortable too, with dinner entrees not rising above the mid-20s." - Katherine Chew Hamilton

Cannot express how much we enjoyed our impromptu meal there. We sat at the bar and watched some of the magic happen. The chef easily shared how he made certain items (those pickles! And the beets!). The burger was one of the best we ever had. Staff moved around with grace and humor. They all looked like they enjoyed being there. What a difference that can make. If we are ever in the area again this will be a must stop.

Went to this incredible Bistro today, for the first time. The staff was so amazing, friendly and attentive. Even got to meet the owner, Noelle. Such a sweet Lady. We had the Fish and Chips, which is fresh Halibut, fries and coleslaw. Loved everthing, including the appetizer. Took some vanilla cheesecake home for dessert. Amazing experience. If you want fresh quality food, it is a MUST. Thank you to all the great people, who made our lunch a total awesome experience. Yummy 😋 We will definitely be back 🩷✨️😋👌 Ate the dessert, was quite yummy 😋

Update: We had a Broadway show to attend and I'd had a great experience before at this restaurant so before driving into Portland we went here for dinner as part of our nite out. If you follow me I rate based on food and service experience. That's why we eat out right ? Honestly the food was still really great. The service was bad, like really bad (I don't think I'll return bad). We ordered and every single entree came out at the same time. So by the time we got to our main meal it was cold. I also ordered a glass of wine and it was a very small pour for $14 dollars....I was so surprised, I asked the server if this was a normal pour or a sample to see if I wanted a glass? (Save your money don't order wine here). The waitress changed everything I felt able this place. Old Review: We really enjoyed this bistro. We were greeted when we walked in. The ambiance and service were great. Enjoyed the food as well. Would recommend checking it out if in town.

My wife and I were passing through Newberg and decided to try this place for brunch based on the reviews. What an excellent decision! My bloody mary was great, and my wife loved her mimosa with pineapple juice. We ordered the gazpacho, a side salad, and their sandwich special which was basically a charcuterie board on thick bread. Everything was delicious! I’m also posting some updated menu photos because the older ones we looked at didn’t even list the bloody mary or mimosas. We will definitely be back next time we’re in Newberg.

Google
What a little gem! This place was recommended to us by friends and we immediately decided to check it out. It was a challenge to decide what to order since every option on the menu sounded very appealing. We got the mussels, burger, duck, and steak frites. From presentation to flavors, everything was perfect! The wait was a bit long, but the food did not disappoint. Definitely coming back!

This is the place to go in Newburg. Delicious giant salad and lovely pasta dish with mushrooms. Open kitchen and super helpful staff. Interesting Old Fashioned.

Google
Charming, quaint, delicious! We flew into PDX and drove straight here for lunch. We picked it based on their high reviews and glad we did- great way to start our vacation:). We had their ham and Brie sandwich paired with eggplant puree soup, and fish & chips. Food was scrumptious, and the service spectacular. Noelle served us and she was extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine country, and very sweet. Turns out she owns the place with her husband, the chef, who studied culinary in France. Expect to pay about $20-25 per meal for this high quality food. It is worth it!

Google
My husband and I visited Newbergundian for breakfast. Food was delicious and the service was excellent so we went back again the next day for another breakfast. Had the veggie hash, eggs Benedict and the farmhouse . Quality of meals for price plus personal service were all excellent. Several people that we came in contact with recommended them to us for both breakfast and lunch. What a find! Loved them

Yelp
Unexpectedly came for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. Lovely brunch menu. Staff very friendly. We chose outside seating before the heat really kicked in. Coffee flowed constantly - very tasty too.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed this? I have been several times as I have family in the area. The food and service are always on point and everyone is always happy. Honestly it's a can't go wrong with anything on the menu kind of place. Last time I was there I had a delicious open faced sandwich (ham and cheese) which had a great mustard sauce. I know I'll be back!

Yelp
SIMPLY A MUST! If you're in the Newburg area with an appetite for a unique menu...stop by this place. It's quaint...it's cute...the food is amazing.

Suz S.

Yelp
They went above and beyond normal customer service! We showed up with 7 people and they made a spot for us on the back patio. It was chilly but really quiet and we could have a good time talking and laughing. The staff kept up on our drinks and the service was fast. Most of ordered the fish and chips and we all thought some of the best we have ever had! The tartar sauce was homemade and so good!!! Couldn't recommend it more!
google avatar

John N.

Yelp
We had the soup of the day, roast turkey sandwich, and french fries. The sandwich and french fries portions were a lot. And the soup was very good. The service was friendly and fast. I like eating here.

Yelp
We came here on a sunday morning and we loved it. First off our server rocked. Thank you Matt for the good service and fantastics recommendations. We shared the avocado toast and then we each got a menu item. The food was DELICIOUS. We left full and happy. We sat outside on the patio which was a great choice. The patio is awesome. Inside is a tad small but they do a good job trying not to make it crammed. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The service was so very sweet and attentive. The presentation of the food was stunning and tasted delicious. Loved the intimate feel of the restaurant and seeing the hustle in the kitchen. You can tell there is passion here! Look at how beautiful that beet salad is!!! The whipped cheese on the bottom and crunchy nuts sprinkled on top made it not fun to eat but appealing to the eye. The fried chicken sandwich was a special but rivaled one of our favorite spots at home. Might need to make this one a regular! The soup was full of flavor and the corn added pops of summer freshness. The wait staff was regularly checking on us and even brought us extra croutons. Really an impeccable meal. Thank you!!

Yelp
This place was oozing with charm. I was pleasantly surprised as the way it been described to me was it was a dive, but I found it adorable. We dinned inside which had an open kitchen and exposed wood beans. I had looked at the menu multiple times prior to dinning there and had been craving the squash croquettes in a curry sauce which is just what I got, and it was full of flavor, and very filling. I was full for hours after. The staff was very efficient as I was on a very short lunch break, so my husband ordered ahead and as soon as arrived my food was on the table.
google avatar

Todd H.

Yelp
The food is good very good. So it gets three stars just for that. As you can tell I devoured it. Everything about it had the taste buds salivating. The side of fruit as an added touch is on of my favorite things. Hollandaise sauce with more than a hint of lemon and that paprika to me what makes a hollandaise sauce great. Potato had that great crispness but not burnt. Wish there was more. Egg very well poached nice and fluffy. The rub here was the price. Over $30 for breakfast is just well enough to keep one from going back for breakfast. Service was definitely not worth the extra price. Guess I am more of a diner guy.

Yelp
Found myself in Newberg on this spectacular weekend in October and discovered this place on Yelp. Had a delightful early dinner outside on their patio. Enjoyed a nice glass of Bordeaux, a nice salad and opted for their special today: the Bouillabaisse. It was fabulous! Full of seafood. Full of flavor. What a terrific start to my exploration of Newberg! Just started a new Yelp collection for nice places in Newberg. This one is first on the list. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more from their menu :)

Yelp
While spending a week tasting wine in the valley, the Newburgundian became our favorite place to dine. Friendly, unpretentious, yet a delight for foodies who appreciate a simple yet diverse menu with daily specials prepared by a classically trained chef. Service is professional and friendly, not uptight. Reservations recommended, as seating is limited and clearly a favorite of locals as well. Parking is limited, but worth the effort. Enjoy!

Donna B.

Yelp
Amazing salads, soups, cocktails! Creative and artful combinations of flavors. Highly recommend for a special lunch experience.

Yelp
A must place to go if you are in the area (or not). Customer service was fantastic. There were so many yummy options, but in the end, we got their soup of the day, crispy chicken sandwich, and the manila clams. The star of the show was manila clams bathe in a butter/wine sauce with lemon zest, leek, and ground meat served with some crispy garlic bread. It is absolutely delicious and perfect for a party of two or three. The crispy chicken was very crispy topped with homemade coleslaw. The only thing I wish it had was some spice. I am not one to eat spicy food, but I think a nice dry spice rub on the chicken would provide great depth to the flavor and complement the side better. Otherwise, I will definitely come here again and at the very least order another bowl of manila clams...or two.

Yelp
We came here for brunch and it was delicious! All of it was fresh and tasty including the jam we got with our toast. The sausage was AMAZING! Really good flavor as were the potatoes! Plus the service was good, our waitress was a delight and the prices were reasonable. My only critique would be they are using fake cheese on things including when asked for it on eggs and then I saw they used it for the grilled cheese on someone else's plate. Maybe that isn't a deal breaker for some, but it is not my favorite. I still think for the vibe, service, and food this place deserves 5 stars!

Yelp
Love the food and the service was great. It's a bit small and could be more comfortable. The parking lot is hard to get in and out of, but otherwise I highly recommend it.

Carrie B.

Yelp
We had a great brunch here while visiting Newberg! Delicious mimosas and eats! We stopped in before heading out to taste some wine and had a light lunch/brunch. It was delicious!
google avatar

Keith L.

Yelp
The food is always great! The main menu and specials are always prepared with care. The service is on point. The seating area is intimate and inviting. My favorite here in Newberg!

Isabel H.

Yelp
My husband and I were excited to try this place as I had been once before for a work event. While the first visit was delicious, our most recent visit left us VERY disappointed. The ambiance is nice however the service was greatly lacking. We had hoped to get a quick bite to eat but were stuck waiting an hour between appetizers and main courses. Our appetizers were fine but the mains left a lot to be desired. Over salted clams and a cold burger with freezer burnt buns. We won't be back.

Yelp
This little place is a real Newberg gem. Very well-lit and pleasant. Pretty much everything I've ever had here has been outstanding. It can feel a bit crowded, but my experience has been that as soon as the food arrives, the rest of the world falls away. The burger is pretty extraordinary, the potato croquettes are fantastic, and you can't go wrong with anything that involves roasted or pickled vegetables. I'll keep coming back here whenever I'm in Newberg, and if you haven't been you're missing out!
google avatar

Jessy M.

Yelp
Went in for lunch and had a Turkey and pesto sandwich with fries and it was delicious. Service was great too, a little wait but worth it. We live close and I will definitely be back and bring my husband. Not the cheapest but it was good and worth it.

Stefan F.

Yelp
This is our go to place! We've been going to the Newbergundian for the last 4 years and have never had a bad experience. The place is very inviting, good ambiance and friendly staff. The food is great! The menu has something for everyone and we routinely go in for specific items, but are always impressed by the Chef's creative specials. Yesterday, I had the best Halibut I have ever had. I never thought Halibut can get such flavor and have never seen it served with crispy leeks. It was amazing! And I am not even a seafood guy. I usually get the Wedge salad with steak (yum, yum). Our favorite waiter, Joe, talked me into a special drink with Campari and Prosecco and I loved that also. Topped that with an Almond Creme Brûlée and I remembered I need to apologize for not writing a review sooner. Love this place! Just Love it!

Yelp
We end up here a couple of times a month. I'm a fan of their Croque Monsieur salad. Really tasty and filling. It's $18 and almost a meal in itself. Nice selection of appetizers. I really like the Fish and Chips. My wife has been ordering their Steak Frits. Really tender meat. They've had Old Rasputin Imperial Stout on Nitro since day one. One of my favorites. Wine and cocktail list is quite serviceable. Only a few cautions. The fries are often a tad over salted. Ask for no salt and you'll be fine. Salt it at the table if you like. Salads at most every restaurant these days are a bit too wet for my taste. We ask for dressing on the side. And they recently changed their house made blue cheese dressing. Now it has this barnyard funk to it that neither my wife or I can get past. We love blue cheese dressing for salads and even dipping French fries in. But not this version. I recommend you go for a nice casual meal. It's a welcome spot in the Newberg food scene.

Yelp
We enjoyed our meals. Great flavors. Had exceptional service from Emma. She is a ray of sunshine We sat on the patio and it was more than comfortable with fresh air. Fantastic we will be back as soon as we can!

Yelp
the grilled 5 cheese was so bomb I loved it, definitely the best grilled cheese I've ever had, it was served with the best sauce I've tasted (it was tomato jelly) I've never had Tomato jelly but I definitely want it again, the grilled cheese was perfectly cooked with a yummy crispy cheese on the edge, French fries were delectable perfectly crispy. Service was great, our waiter was super nice. Loved it here!!! 10/10!! The ceaser salad was quite amazing as well it was the perfect ratio of lettuce to sauce and it had an amazing faint fish taste, very delish!! Thank you newburgundian bistro!!!!

Yelp
Oh my goodness!! Breakfast here is amazing! (Haven't done lunch or dinner yet but will be returning for sure!) Not just a standard breakfast- staff, service, ambiance and food is amazing! They were a little busy this morning, little did I know it was lucky for us though! We sat at their bar stools right in front of their kitchen! I could have sat there all day watching as they cooked all the amazing things! Down to how they plated all the food with such care and dedication! Ok- so the food! Chef Shaun and Romel cook to perfection! Eggs Benedict (not the average- they add tomato and arugula) steak (oh so perfectly cooked and eggs, kids buttery noodles - good grief- try the ice cream! All the while- chef chatted with us- cooked all the things! Best brunch we have had in a long time - especially in Newberg! You must try!

Yelp
TL;DR: Cute and bougie! Went here on Saturday for a late brunch (2pm) with a friend. Got to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine while it was still here. We were able to sit right away and got water basically upon sitting down, which was nice! The staff were all very nice and incredibly attentive. We never wanted for anything - our water and coffee was always full! I got the chicken and waffles, my friend got some cocktails, as well as the daily hash. I loved the chicken and waffles - the waffle was fluffy and sweet whereas the chicken was perfectly crispy, slightly spicy and paired perfectly with the waffle. My friends hash was a risk that had a high pay off! You never know if the hash is going to be canned or fresh and to our delight, it was fresh! Cocktails looked gorgeous and reported to be very refreshing. It's on the spendy side but the food quality and quantity are worth it.

Wayne B.

Yelp
Good experience all around. Food was geeat... especially desert. Have adult beverages too

Stacey D.

Yelp
Lovely! I had the pleasure of sitting at the chef's counter and sampling a few things before ordering my dinner for one. I came by on a Thursday evening, and it was steadily busy while I was there. I understand the weekends are much more hectic. So, if you find yourself out wine tasting in the Willamette Valley on a weekday (or weekend), do yourself a favor and stop in to this charming little spot.

Yelp
Very nice place to enjoy good dinner choices and a few custom cocktails. I suggest the Caesar Salad with anchovies.

Yelp
Delightful small bistro with excellent service. If the location and atmosphere were a little more charming, and the food just a little bit better, this would rate five stars for the area. Our meal was during brunch service on a weekend, so some of the items I was hoping to order based on prior reviews and photos weren't available during that meal service. However, we were very happy with what we did order: -- Roasted Beets -- Spinach Wrap -- Grilled Five Cheese The star of the show were the beets and I'd happily order them again. Beautifully composed and plated dish. The spinach wrap (vegetarian) was nice, but both the wrap and green salad (solely greens) were slightly overdressed for my taste. The Grilled Five Cheese was enjoyable, especially because of the tomato jam that accompanied the dish. I can't say enough about the attentiveness of the server, their knowledge of the menu, and overall good grace and humor. With the majority of the past year getting food to-go, it reminded me of the joy of dining out. The seating is cozy inside with some stools at the kitchen bar and about five other tables indoors. There were some delightful little touches like a row of Matchbox cars over the door. Along the side of the restaurant there are a few outside tables that are only partially covered by the eave of the building, so diners are exposed to both sun and rain unless conditions are just right. There is a also a larger dining tent behind the restaurant, but that was not in use during our visit. The location of the bistro isn't the best since it is close to the corner of a major intersection. It takes away from the ambiance when you are staring at the Walgreens across the street. And because the seating is so tight, when you are dining indoors, our table was pushed against a window and the table outside is also against the window so it feels a little claustrophobic. Overall, I just wished the restaurant was in a different location. But, the food and service were so good, that I'd happily return.

Lian B.

Yelp
Service and food were excellent! Open kitchen and a great selection of both breakfast and lunch items.
google avatar

Yelp
I met someone a couple of nights ago that worked here and swore the best burger around could be found at this little gem. And he wasn't kidding! I came in around 3 and little did I know it was happy hour, they have drink specials and a whole happy hour menu. This is a little spot with just a few tables and some bar seating. I really like it because you have a view of everything. You can watch the kitchen cook the food and prep, and watch the bartender make drinks. There are no TVs or anything but the playlist was on point. The menu looks fantastic, but I had to go for the burger! It's a hand formed patty and she is thicc boy!! I got it cooked medium and added bacon and cheese for a little extra, and it came with a mound of fries on the side. One thing I want to point out because it was a total game changer is their homemade pickles. They really added so much to the burger and cut through the salty bacon perfectly. The burger itself was amazing, and might be the best burger I've ever had! It was so juicy and the beef was fresh and full of flavor! With the addition of lettuce, tomato, onion, and their homemade pickles it was perfection. The beer prices are pretty standard and the star are so friendly and engaging! I will be returning real soon to try something new! Everything here is fresh and homemade and it's definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
Really great little spot. Straightforward menu, produced with care and high quality ingredients. The service was very warm and friendly, and it genuinely seemed like they enjoyed working there/with each other which was refreshing. From out of town but I will be back to this area and will be back again. Well done NB.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
A great place for lunch in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We had soup du jour for a starter--cream of mushroom and pork lentil. Neither were very good. Mushroom completely over-shadowed by spice and flavoring. Lentil was too clumpy to be considered soup. The lunch was redeemed by the Ruben sandwich and perfectly crisp French fries. The pepper and bread and butter pickles were nice additions. We finished our lunch by sharing a caramel sundae with pistachio nuts. Service was very good.
google avatar

Kelley W.

Yelp
The most important thing I can say about this restaurant is that everything served is delicious! They always have something new to try and old favorites as well! Recently reviewed by a local as "The Best Burger in Yamhill County" I'm inclined to agree!
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
This was a really nice dining experience. Ally was our server, she was super sweet and genuine. Delicious wines, good bites, and even better people. I visited on a Wednesday night. Every table was full. They have indoor and outdoor seating.

Ellen F.

Yelp
Had a nice lunch they were out of Turkey the sliced chicken breast was substituted my husband enjoyed. I had the fish and chips. Amazingly fresh and the coleslaw superb. Last night in the area decided to go back for dinner. Tried the roasted beet salad very good. My husband ordered the steamed clams and I ordered risotto. Sadly both were over spiced with chili of some sort. The delicate fresh flavors were overshadowed by heat. The asparagus and mushrooms flavors were lost. The distinct clam flavor was also overshadowed. We plan to come back next time in the area. Just will not order the risotto or clams again. Service, atmosphere and freshness is excellent The one star off has to do with no mention of spicy in description
google avatar

Lori H.

Yelp
A little on the pricey side for Newberg, but the food is totally legit and worth it! We are spoiled being from Napa, but this place is great!
google avatar

Paige M.

Yelp
What a gem! This might be the best restaurant in the city. They had a great wine list, a few creative cocktails and locally sourced/seasonal ingredients Seating is limited and they do not take reservations, but they had picnic tables that you can enjoy a beverage at while you wait (small space) We had a lovely bottle of Shea Vineyard Pinio Noir - under $60 The beat small plate /starter was to.die.for. - they were perfectly roasted and finished with balsamic and hazelnuts We shared the duck special and pork chop! Both were juicy and full of flavor. Tons of gluten free options! Indoor and outdoor covered seating

Rhonda C.

Yelp
Have been here a few times and always enjoyed the food and service. It is a bit out of our way, but when we are in the area we look forward to dining here. The staff are friendly and patient and the food is well prepared with many options to choose.
google avatar

Velma S.

Yelp
We have been here a couple times but find it a bit disappointing. The menu is limited, portions small and not worth the high prices. The bouillabaisse main was really small and quite smelly meaning the seafood was not fresh. The steak was tasty but only came with some fries. We both had to eat again at home, $80 poorer. Ambiance is pretty basic as is service .Oh, and the chef has long uncovered hair he runs his greasy fingers through whilst cooking. Yuk.
google avatar

Erin H.

Yelp
Great food. Had the turkey sandwich with Swiss split with my Mom. Plenty of food for sharing. The fries were nice and crispy and we enjoyed the beautiful weather outside on the patio.
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
This is by far our family's favorite spot in newberg. Haven't had anything here that I wouldn't be happy eating again. The eggs Benedict is fantastic and I'm not usually a fan. The ham is magic. The staff is really nice- especially the Saturday morning guy. We came in last night and had the pasta and the duck. Both were fantastic.
google avatar

Mandy V.

Yelp
The steak, burgers, and brunch are delicious! Always a nice atmosphere and one of our go to restaurants in town.

Jackie L.

Yelp
So busy they closed down the back patio We ended up leaving and went to another place with better service and room

Brad G.

Yelp
Great food. Friendly staff. It gets quite busy but there's always the bar seating and you can watch the masters at work as the food gets prepped. Solid dinner spot.

Robin B.

Yelp
We have been here three times and every time it is great! My son started college at George Fox this fall and I see this restaurant being a regular stop when we are in town. I really like the outdoor dining area and each waitress we have gotten has been so sweet. The food is wonderful and the portions are a great size

R A.

Yelp
Very good food made in a open kitchen. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Good enough to return for another dinner. It was very good as well. Atmosphere and service are great!! Asst Mgr was excellent at making the guests feel welcome and pleased.

S L.

Yelp
The fish and chips use an exceptionally fresh halibut. Great ambiance with friendly and helpful staff.

Yelp
Great food and service ! Prices are reasonable. The Wine choices are good also. We will be going back!
