Our Readers’ Favorite India City Hotels of 2023

"In the No. 3 spot, the century-old Oberoi Grand sits on Kolkata’s Chowringee Road, just across the street from the 1,000-acre Maidan park that's home to the white marble Victoria Memorial museum. This hotel’s sprawling rooms and suites host “beautiful service and food,” noted one reader, while the three restaurants are standout Kolkata spots among locals. One voter kept it short and sweet: “This place is simply the best.”" - Travel + Leisure Editors

How Chef Chintan Pandya Runs NYC’s Hottest Indian Restaurants | Eater

"A Kolkata hotel where the chef’s first on-the-job training took place; he rotated through multiple kitchen sections and learned daily operations there, an experience that introduced him to professional cooking and ultimately led to his placement in an Indian kitchen despite initial ambitions in Italian cuisine or pastry." - Morgan Goldberg

I had a wonderful stay at Peerless Hotel, Kolkata. The location is excellent, right in the heart of the city, making it very convenient for both business and leisure. Safety measures are well maintained, which gave me peace of mind throughout my stay. The staff were extremely polite, courteous, and always willing to help, which added to the overall comfort. The rooms were clean and well-kept. The only area for improvement is the dining menu, which felt somewhat limited, though the food served was fresh and tasty.

The Peerless is a busy one and well-staffed, and is located very conveniently in the heart of the city. The hotel is well-connected by various modes of transport.||Since it is a well-known landmark, it was easy to travel forth and back, without having to navigate the cab drivers or explain the street/area name. ||||The breakfast buffet service had a lot of variety, and the service was very efficient.||||The gym is small but sufficient for my regimen. It also offers a level view of the city from its windows.||Due to my schedule, I was unable to try out Aheli, their restaurant, but I hope the next time I'm there, I get a chance.||||The staff is very polite and helpful, and the hotel is very clean. There were some small hiccups which were resolved promptly, but I had a very pleasant and very productive stay here. ||||I hope to stay here again during my next visit to the city, and try the food at Aheli as well.

The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata – A Classic Experience My stay at The Oberoi Grand was truly memorable. The hotel beautifully blends old-world charm with modern luxury. From the grand colonial architecture to the warm and professional service, everything felt top-class. The rooms are spacious, very clean, and well-maintained. The food at the restaurants was delicious, especially the breakfast buffet with so many fresh options. The staff are polite, always ready to help, and they really make you feel welcome. The central location is another big plus—perfect for exploring Kolkata. The pool area and greenery inside the property offer a peaceful escape from the busy city. It’s a bit on the expensive side, but worth it for the comfort, quality, and hospitality you receive.

We stayed at The Peerless Inn, Kolkata for two nights. The overall experience was pleasant. The room and bathroom were excellent—clean, spacious, and comfortable. A special thanks to Ms. Neha at the front desk, who was incredibly helpful right from check-in and arranged our room very quickly. We are especially grateful to Mr. Somnath, his hospitality truly stood out. “Thank you” doesn’t feel enough to express our appreciation for his kindness and service. We also had the chance to try the Aaheli restaurant for authentic Bengali cuisine. Every dish was absolutely delicious. The restaurant manager, Mr. Sanjib, was very warm and made us feel truly welcome. The breakfast had a good variety and the food was delicious. However, the staff at the breakfast restaurant were not very polite and lacked a welcoming attitude or smiles, which slightly affected the morning experience.Overall, our stay was wonderful, except for the breakfast restaurant staff’s attitude. We would definitely recommend Peerless Inn for its great location, comfortable rooms, and exceptional hospitality from key members of the team.

I recently stayed at this hotel and wanted to share my experience. The room was decent, but the bed was disappointingly small, which made it uncomfortable for a good night's sleep. As for the breakfast, it was impressive on one day, with a great spread and good quality. However, the breakfast on the other days was underwhelming, lacking variety and consistency. Overall, the experience was mixed, and I hope the hotel addresses these issues for future guests.

I loved staying at this hotel. I am writing this three years after I went, and this is still the benchmark that I define all hotels by in terms of character, quality, comfort and hospitality. This is one of the few hotels that I remember fondly and still feel good about having spent time there.

Grandest of Grand hotels...the old world charm & the nostalgic feelings. If you plan to stay in the Esplanade area...do stay in Hotel Grand Oberoi. You get a very good bargain at a range of 5k to 7k for a night, double occupancy during peak seasons for a big suite with all comforts. You will love the decor & the amazing bengali/ Indian cuisine. Always recommended.
