Ollerod

"This attractive stone inn provides a charming setting in which to enjoy the team’s accomplished, classically based cooking. Choose from a seat in the bar, the dining room or the pretty walled garden in the summer months; wherever you sit, you can enjoy an appealing range of dishes that make good use of produce from the South West. The relaxed team run the place in a casual yet efficient manner, and there’s nine individually styled bedrooms available if you want to stay the night." - Michelin Inspector

The Ollerod, Beaminster, Dorset, England - Explore & Book

"This is classic Thomas Hardy country (Beaminster was Emminster in Tess of the d’Urbervilles); a mini market town, with a perfect little square, tucked into a fold of the Brit Valley. The Ollerod (meaning cowslip in old Dorset dialect) has the look of an old coaching inn, a hint of rural manor, but the long, low building – weathered Dorset hamstone, mullioned windows draped in foliage–- was founded as a medieval priests’ house. Back in the early noughties, it was given a new lease of life by a creative London couple, then the head chef Chris and his partner Silvana took the reins. The cosy, characterful country-retreat ambiance remains; think ingle-nooks, flagstones, oak beams and Georgian panelling teamed up with pretty wallpapers and Italian cotton linens. The 13 rooms ooze low-key escapism, while the 2 self-catering apartments, located just next door, offer extra space and privacy. And the food is truly heavenly. In winter, snuggle up by a warm fire; in summer, linger over supper in the garden. Or just get out the walking boots and enjoy this beautiful, unspoiled corner of rural Wessex. Highs Bags of atmosphere - historic and traditional, without being stuffyThe food is fresh, local and seasonal, with Asian flavours subtly added to some dishesRelaxing in the hotel’s comfortable lounge – a real home from home, with an inviting array of sofas and easy chairs, local art and real log fires A great setting with lots of country walks and great beaches nearbyWell set up for families, with suites and apartments that sleep 4, children's meals available, lots of equipment and toys, and plenty of family-friendly activities nearby Lows Some rooms were looking a little dated when we visited, but Chris and Silvana are in the process of giving them a refreshThe hotel is right on the A-road into Beaminster, though it quietens down at nightDue to the layout of the main house, some rooms may get a bit of kitchen noiseFront rooms lack views, but they are among the best in the houseParking can be an issue. There's space for a few cars on site, but occasionally you may have to park (free of charge) down the road" - Lesley Gillilan

A hidden gem and definitely worth visiting. The service at the Ollerod was excellent and the staff are its best asset. Archie in particular was very helpful, he was able to accommodate our special requests and surprised us with a lovely upgrade when we checked in. The food was excellent despite my special dietary requirement. Our only negative would be the bed in our room, as the mattress was not great. If we were staying for longer I'm pretty sure that they would have found a solution. The standard of cleanliness was also great. Overall we had a great stay and would have stayed longer if we had the time. The Ollerod is definitely worth a visit and an excellent base for Beaminster and surrounding villages.

We booked the Ollerod for a few days. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The room was well decorated and clean with a comfortable bed. But the standout feature of the Ollerod is the outstanding restaurant. They have a chef who is imaginative and inventive. Everything we had was delicious. Can not recommend enough.

Fabulous fixed price lunch; Highly recommended. The skills and effort going into the making the dishes (flavours and presentation) massively surpasses what you would expect at this price point. Five of us ate a range of dishes and each was special in it's own way. Served by very friendly and accommodating staff. By far the best meal out in our weeks holiday in Dorset.

We booked for lunch - 3 children 6 adults and a dog. We forgot to mention we had a dog with us, although they dont allow dogs in the restaurant they couldn't have been more accommodating to get us somewhere to sit. Staff are flawless- the best service topped with the most delicious food! 5* all round. Thank you for a lovely afternoon on a horrible grey day!

We came to their restaurant in July 2021 and booked to stay as well, based on the restaurant, which was once very good but sadly it was a whole different experience.|The room we had (No 9) was hot - problem was if you opened the windows there was a racket from the kitchen extractor and an overwhelming smell of chips cooking. The room itself was basic (£270 for one night) with very tired furnishings, scaldingly hot towel rail in the bathroom, chipped ceramic light pull and scratchy old bed linen. Not worth the money by a long chalk. The building is very badly maintained and our room had rotten window sills outside.||The restaurant was very busy, service was very slow and food had an over ambitious and long menu which immediately rings alarm bells. The burger and the pizza we chose were fine, but weren't quite the restaurant experience we were expecting! Felt sorry for the young and willing staff who were rushed off their feet and no manager in sight.||Breakfast was a debacle and of course nobody to complain about it to but the Housekeeper who was manning the desk. All deeply unprofessional. I eventually spoke to the owner a few days after our stay who didn't want to know about the terrible breakfast, let alone anything else! I have emailed her twice in the hope of getting some sort of recompense but she has ignored my emails. If all businesses refused to engage with complaints the way Silvana Bandini has, then heaven help us.

Stayed here for 2 nights at the beginning of April 25. Had dinner here and the food was great, but it was a very rushed service - very small space between courses; it almost felt like they wanted us through and out so they could re-sit the table. We wanted to savour and enjoy the food (which, to be fair, was good, if a bit over-seasoned) but it was all too rushed to be relaxing. The room was great though - clean and one of the more spacious 'pub' style rooms I've been in - and the staff/service were excellent. Slow down my friday evening dinner, let me relax and enjoy it and you'd have got 5 stars!

In 2023, Ollerod delivered an outstanding dining experience, characterized by excellent food and impeccable service. Fast forward to July 2025, and our visit was unfortunately marked by considerable disappointment. |We found ourselves having to ask for basic necessities, from clearing litter off the terrace to requesting salt, pepper, and sauces for our party's meal. The quality of the main dishes was also notably below par, a stark contrast to our prior positive impression

RESTAURANT CLOSED WEDNESDAY AND SUNDAYS! But fun Mexican Cantina serving food you can eat inside. Best things: lovely staff, friendly atmosphere, coctail specials on Wednesdays, fantastic scrambled eggs, much nicer room than we were expecting, feather pillows, hot water and great pressure. Lovely garden with lots of tables. Not as great: broken lamp in our room, barstools in the pub sized for very tall people, and our mattress definitely needed replacing.

Yelp
Fantastic food, excellent service. A cut above the rest and well worth a visit. Tastefully decorated and situated in a 13th century country house, The Ollerod is the perfect blend of contemporary and historical significance.
