I finally had a chance to eat at The Onion Tree last week, and it was a great experience. Sea Cliff Village is always a nice place to visit and I had been looking for an excuse to try the place out. Last week the weather was beautiful so my Uncle and a few of our friends went over for dinner. The place was pretty hopping for a Wednesday night, and while it's not tiny, it's not a big place either, so I'd recommend reservations for Fridays and weekends. I made a reservation for outdoors given the weather which didn't work out unfortunately. Another party claimed to have an outdoor reservation (they did not - they pointed to ours) and took our table. We didn't want to make a big deal of it so sat inside. The staff put us at a nice table just inside their open folding doors, which was almost like being outside and we appreciated that.
They've got a nice selection of local and other beers on taps, a great wine selection, and a variety of mixed drinks. We're a beer crowd so went with a few local brews. We shared a few appetizers between us: Jay's Balls, lamb meatballs with a sauce including chili, garlic, and other ingredients; Voodoo Chicken Wings - spicy as the name implies; and the Spiced Scallops. They had a octopus appetizer that I was looking forward to trying, but they were out. No matter, there's always the next visit, and the scallops were excellent in it's place. The meatballs were really nicely spiced (got my nose running) and the large size made splitting them between the four of us easy. Wings are always a good choice and these were spicy - flavorful as opposed to hot - which everyone enjoyed.
It's tough to narrow down an entree with everything on the menu sounding so good. Everyone wanted to try the Chicken Tikka Masala, so we ended up with two of those, an order of the Butter Chicken, and I thought I'd throw in a curve with the Chicken Tikka Masala Pizza. All were excellent. If you're not a spicy (hot) food person you might want to ask them to dial it down a little. It wasn't a heat level that would have you reaching for a glass of water in my opinion. I usually ask for things spicier myself, but I found this a good balance between great flavor and a little zing of heat.
We were pretty full at this point, but you know, dessert. We shared rice pudding made with forbidden rice (cool take on the traditional rice pudding and very tasty), panna cotta, and a small chocolate cake. There were others options we would've liked to try, but we were in danger of having to waddle out at that point, so we'll save it for the next visit.
The place is really nicely decorated, cozy and welcoming. The staff is friendly and attentive. Service is prompt and everything was fresh. The location in the village is pretty, and at least on weeknights, parking isn't a problem (I was right across the street with others right in front). Might be more of a challenge on the weekends, but I expect you'd easily find parking within a block or two. Was too busy eating and socializing so I forgot to take more photos, but you'll get the idea with the appetizers. I'll be back again!
