The Best Restaurants at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2022 | Where to Eat | Eater London

"There are two Mosque Kitchens in Edinburgh. One is on Nicholson Street; this one on Potterrow; the two are parallel to each other. One claims to be ‘Original,’ the other does not. Both serve excellent homestyle dal, pakoras, and curries in a canteen set-up. The ‘Original’ is outside, which can be good. The other is inside, which can be good. They’re both great, so visit." - James Hansen

A bit of a mixed bag: nut allergy sufferers, take note! The Good: Lovely little place! The inside is lovely, the portions are really big, and the staff are really friendly. The menu has a decent choice, though not everything is available every day. They also do a nice selection of cakes and hot tea. It was our first day in Edinburgh and our first proper stop for food. The kids loved their seekh kebabs and naan. The Bad (and a serious warning): Now for the major downside. I ordered the chicken tikka with rice. In all my born days (and as a South Asian person) I have never heard of almonds in a chicken tikka sauce nor have chicken tikka ever been SWEET. I took one bite and had a full-blown allergic reaction. When I asked, the bloke confirmed the sauce has almond powder in it. So, a massive red flag for anyone with a nut allergy. My friend and daughter also had the chicken tikka, and they said the sauce was far too sweet and they didn't enjoy it. The Okay: The chicken buna on rice was decent enough, but just a heads-up, it's not a proper South Asian buna, so don't expect those classic, deep spices. Verdict: Great for a big portion, but be very careful what you order, especially if you've got allergies. We had a bit of a nightmare, to be honest.

The Original Mosque Kitchen is an incredibly convenient spot, located right near the Central Mosque. The fact that the food is guaranteed Halal is a major plus. There's a ready supply of food with plenty of variety, and while the taste is generally just fine, the rates are very reasonable. It's a fantastic, reliable option for a quick, worry-free Halal meal in the area.

Delicious, fast, affordable food with friendly staff. Eat outside under the tarp, or inside at one of the very few tables. Today's delicious was lamb bhuna over rice, and lamb biryani. Amount of meat was considerable!! Chicken dishes also abound, as do several vegan selections!! Highly recommended!

If you walk to the right of the Mosque, you will be greeted by The Original Mosque Kitchen, which is an absolute gem. From the relaxed tranquil atmosphere, to the delicious food, whether you are Muslim, Non Muslim, with Family or by yourself, I highly recommend you to visit, take a seat, and immerse yourself in the culinary delights that are on offer! Very clean, outstanding flavours served with friendliness and a smile, you cannot go wrong with this place, trust me. This is the sort of place where you could eat, relax, and then realise 4 hours has just passed by, in what feels like 10 minutes, 😂 I cannot praise this place enough, I absolutely loved visiting, and any time I come back to Edinburgh, this would be top of my visiting priorities. God bless all who are involved in serving the community what I would describe as top tier cuisine, in a beautiful serene environment. aamiin

There’s not many desi places in Edinburgh so for us to find a desi kitchen was an amazing sight! Their portions are quite big and food tastes amazing! We had the biryani, chicken curry and shish kebab. Though their Chai is not actually freshly brewed from the pot, it still hit the spot. The atmosphere felt just like home!

A cozy restaurant with reasonable price for Indian and Deshi dining. I believe they serve takeaway as well. Lovely staff and outstanding outdoor seating. Definitely will come back if I'm again in Edinburgh.

Yelp
Edinburgh Central Mosque is a sign of multicultural Britain and the merging of two cultures. I have been to a few Muslim countries- Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia, but have never seen a mosque designed in this way. It is as if it's structure is done in the traditional Islamic style, whilst the colour and tone to it is very much in the same vein with the rest of Edinburgh and is a credit to the city. I have never had the chance to go into the mosque itself, but will get the opportunity to during the festival period, when it does open its doors to everyone and allows people to be educated on the role the mosque plays within Islamic culture as well as informing the public about Islam itself. A lot of people will have used the 'Mosque Kitchen' which offers very tasty, cheap curries and is open to the wider public where profits from the meals sold there go to worthy causes around the world.
