How Immigrants Have Transformed America’s Gas Stations | Eater

"A Middle Eastern restaurant that began when an immigrant family converted a two-bay car garage into a gas station and then added an open-kitchen eatery to show customers the freshness and quality of their food. Known for bold, fragrant flavors (garlic and olive oil often draw people in), it quickly gained a strong local following and expanded into multiple locations; only the original Berkley site still operates out of a gas station. The business grew as a family operation, with successive generations helping scale the concept, though expansion and some locations were impacted by the pandemic." - Trisha Gopal

Google
The cleanest gas station/convenience store I've ever seen. My home isn't this clean. Early afternoon and my gut is rumbling. I guess a granola bar & an orange won't cover breakfast and lunch. Ordered a chicken shawarma from the big tablet while talking with the woman behind the counter. She was a hoot. About three minutes later, food in hand & headed to the other counter to chow down. Great shawarma! View is nothing to write home about, just 12 Mile & Coolidge. Music was unexpected and a bit loud. An eclectic mix. Kind of descriptive of the whole place really.

Google
Amazing customer service and food. Everything is made very fresh to order. The falafel pita wrap is the best around. The fattoush salad is always done right and full of fresh veggies. Great hummus! And they make their fries fresh when you order. Can’t order wrong here!

Vivek Iyer

Google
Fantastic food. 4 for atmosphere as there is nowhere to sit if you order in person to wait for your food (this is purely a take-out spot) This is just a very minor inconvenience that should not deter you from ordering food from here. I love the chicken shawarma wrap and the chicken shawarma dinner gives you plenty of food for leftovers.

Google
Been going here for years, crazy how good it is. Food that turns your day around, from bad to rad. The combination meals for groups are generous and delicious.

Google
Enjoyed my food as it was fresh and quite tasty. The garlic sauce is unmatched I must say. A young man named Cory took my order and was very friendly. The kitchen staff could be more friendly. Once my order was ready someone just sat it on the counter and pointed. No here you go! Or have a good day… 🤷

Google
As far as gas station food goes, this place easily tops. No wonder they've been ranked among the best gas station restaurants by a media outlet (I can't remember the outlet haha). I've had the chicken cream chop, chicken shawarma wrap, and fattoush salad, all were good. As a gas station restaurant, the seating is extremely limited so expect to go there for carry-out

Google
I’ve driven past this place for three years, never going in because, well, it’s in a gas station! The prices were a bit higher than expected. The food is decent, the portion sizes are okay. The staff was not incredibly friendly or patient. The meal was fine for a last minute dinner, but not enough to make us want to go back.

Google
Chicken swarma is always on point. Greek fries, so yummy. Hummus is always great. Bread fantastic. I always go there when I'm on that side of town after seeing my dentist.

Yelp
Upping this 4/5 review to a 5/5, as we got Doordash from here a few days ago and everything was fantastic. I thought the chicken shawarma sandwich would have lettuce in it, but I was wrong (I dislike lettuce); I got it with extra garlic and pickles, too, and it was fabulous. Doordash was doing a BOGO deal for it, too, so we got two of those - $9 for two, great deal, I assume normally $9 for one on DD - and my husband got a meat kafta sandwich, which he also really liked. We also got a side of the garlic (very reasonably priced, around $4.50) and the garlic pita chips. I will say I would not order the garlic pita chips again - they have TOO much garlic and salt, and this is from someone who loves garlic. My guess is their regular pita chips are good, though. Overall I would definitely order from here again or stop by, as everything except the pita chips were delicious.

Yelp
The lentil was delicious. Beef sharmah sandwich was very good. The falafel was very tasty but a little dry.

Yelp
Best Mediterranean food in the area! Ordered a combo for 4 and there was a ton of food. Not pictured is the hummus, fattoush salad, garlic sauce, tershi, and pita bread that was included with the combo. I spoke to one of the staff on the phone regarding my order and he was very helpful and friendly. Also every time I order from DoorDash, I always get my food fast.

Yelp
Mr. Kabob (Berkley) is our frequent go-to place for delicious & fast takeout food. Our family has been going there for many years and have always found their food delicious, their service fast and accurate and their location well placed for several communities. I don't know why I never thought to rate them previously. Sure, they're in a Shell station, but don't let that dissuade you from trying this delicious food.

Yelp
It's a real bummer to leave this review, but this is not the same Mr Kabob I have been getting weekly for 15 years. Ever since they started massive renovations they also started cheaping out on food quality. Kafta is bland, chicken shwarma is shockingly dry and barely seasoned, and the rice has turned into Uncle Ben's mush. The rice is absolutely shocking, it has ruined half the dishes on their menu. I'm serious when I say Uncle Ben's, it tastes just like the crap out of the box. I get there are off days in food service, but I've now had at least 10 mid experiences and won't be going back until some changes are made. Additionally, whoever the lady is that's managing behind the counter now is rude, insulting, and completely miserable to deal with.

Yelp
Are you in the metro-Detroit area looking for healthy, great-tasting, reasonably-priced, take-out Mediterranean fare? Look no further than this friendly gas station in Berkley. Mr Gulli and his family have been serving some of the areas finest Lentil soup, salads, shawarma and shish kabob meals for twenty years. I arrived just before the lunch crowd orders began. The inside of the station where the food is prepared is clean, and folks are friendly and helpful. I received my food order in about 10 minutes. The Combo for Two (about $25) offers a great assortment of delights from the Middle East, with plenty left-over for later. Do try the crushed lentil soup. It's excellent! Mr Kabob will remain my go-to place for feeding folks who drop in unexpectedly.

Yelp
Who would have thought to put a to-go restaurant inside of a gas station? Hey, it works. Mr. Kabob is a great little Middle Eastern fast food hub that serves up delicious food such as hummus, kabob, kefta, fattoush, and lentil soup to name a few. First time here, I tried literally all that I listed above as well as the beef kabobs. Portions are on the smaller side as I ordered the half portion. The kabobs come with 4 pieces of meat, a nice serving of yellow rice (no noodles in the rice), sliced onion, tomatoes, and your choice of a cup of soup or salad. The guys working the counter were straight to the point, knowledgeable about the menu, and were kind. They even gave me extra garlic sauce (thank you!) The hummus was amazing, salad was delish, and the meat cooked perfectly. Parking was easy breezy, and the overall atmosphere was clean and inviting. I will be back!

Yelp
This place in a gas station has been here a long time. It's fabulous. I don't live nearby so when I do swing by this side of town, I make it a point to come here. Delicious food! The beef schawarma has all the goodies. I love the pickled turnips. The meat is not fatty. The foo foo fries is a must try!

Yelp
I will travel from just about anywhere in Michigan for a great lunch! Wow was I surprised!

Yelp
I'm definitely coming back here. Food was great and the price is better. Perfect for takeout -

LaVera J.

Yelp
Always good food one of my favorite restaurants always fast and I can also order food delivery service close to home. Two minutes up the road

Yelp
The white rice has returned! The white rice has returned! nom nom. That is all! Great job listening to your customers in Berkley Mr K. - Thanks...!

Yelp
I stopped by this amazing gas station for a fattoush salad to go. I was asking about the hummus but wasn't going to get it because it was a pretty good size portion. The guy working ended up giving it to me on the house. I'm so glad he did. The hummus was amazing! The fattoush salad was great too. The pita chips stayed crispy! I'll definitely be back!

Seamus O.

Yelp
Best fast /casual middle eastern around. And it's no contest. Not your typical gas station fare.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered for a holiday party of 5. Had a slightly difficult order, so I wasn't completely surprised it wasn't 100 percent correct. Problem was rectified in 10 minutes. Beef and chicken were both very good. Ample amount of very good tasting rice. Large salad. Plenty of pita bread. Added in a side order of humus. Wish the garlic sauce was a larger size. $110 out the door, with a small amount of leftovers. Pretty good deal.

Francisca R.

Yelp
Very disappointed. I have been coming here for years. They recently renovated and changed their menu. They no longer add almonds to their white rice. In fact their rice is no longer white. I left without ordering. It is no longer typical Middle eastern food. I'm sorry, but if someone is allergic to almonds then they should be the one to eat somewhere else. The restaurant shouldn't be the one to change their menu. Very disappointing. They have lost a client for life.

Yelp
Mr Kabob is the best. I think they've even gotten better over time. We ordered carryout for a big group and everyone wouldn't stop talking about how great it was. My parents loved the combo for 2 - definitely could feed more than two! Big salad, side of hummus and pita, rice, and four meats. Very flavorful. Our go-to is a chicken kabob pita, chicken kabob entree with veggies (they have great grilled vegetables!) and lentil soup (excellent soup here!). We also got a side of hummus (best hummus ever) and some falafel (also delicious). I could eat here every day, but maybe I'll settle for every weekend? Definitely a delicious choice for Mediterranean food.

Dallas O.

Yelp
Great food and service. Unexpectedly great food and pleasant experience. Nice overall experience.

Yelp
The food is great and is always ready so incredibly fast. The staff is always very polite as well. Absolutely one of the best.

Yelp
You will be amazed when you come here! For starters, it's located inside a gas station conventient store. Second, it is non stop busy. For the short time I spent there the amount of people that came in, and how much food they walked out with was unbelievable. Lastly, the food was on the money. I can see how this place won awards and acknowledgments. Freshly made to order menu, with an extremely friendly staff. When they found out I wasn't from the area they treated me to a free appetizer. There is a small dine-in section with a few tables and chairs, and since you're inside a convenient store you can purchase anything else you need to go with your meal. That's pretty cool. For a hole in the wall located in a unique place you will not be dispapointed here. FYI: You can call in your order ahead and pick-up.

Yelp
Excellent Chaldean food. Highly recommend. Great flavors and authentic taste. Good service. Clean. High quality ingredients. Make sure you order the tray for 4 or 6 and enjoy with the fam. Excellent tabbouli. Try the beef Kufta, which is tender and delicious.

Yelp
This place rocks. They are super quick and the employees are very friendly. I place an online order and it's ready within 10 min. It's a great lunch option with affordable pricing. Food is excellent, it always hits the spot!
google avatar

Rebecca W.

Yelp
This is my new favorite fast food spot. It's never a line . They get you in and through the line fairly quickly. The parking is the down side. It's very congested and there is no drive through. That being said all the fresh veggies, grilled veggies, sauces and 3 different types hummus makes for delectable making of a meal. I prefer the chicken shawarma bowl it usually enough for two meals. You can choose pita bread or chips with your bowl. The grilled chicken is pretty descent a little dry at times but edible. I will be dropping in from time to time getting my Mediterranean on
google avatar

Tami Schultz S.

Yelp
Great food and a great value! Love their fattoush salad, hummus and bread. Friendly staff

Dashawna S.

Yelp
Don't order from here. I placed a very expensive order through Door Dash for an half order of beef kabobs and a whole order of Chicken. I literally got 4 pieces of beef and barely any chicken. The whole order was almost $60. Salads and grilled veggies came with it. That was fine but the small amount of meat was absolutely ridiculous. I will never order from them again.
google avatar

Jaclyn M.

Yelp
This is our usual go-to Arabic spot when we don't feel like cooking (for the past 13 years since we bought our house close by), but lately the quality has changed. Seems to have happened with the massive renovation they just did. I wouldn't have written a review but tonight was soooo upsetting!! The lentil soup was so salty and thick that you could turn your spoon upside down and it stayed on the spoon!! The shish tawook dinner was an entire plate of rice with 4 dried out and semi-burnt chicken chunks on top. Usually comes with a decent amount of veggies on the side but not tonight. And the toom tastes weird. Like is it spoiled or a strange new recipe?? Kind of oddly sweet and not garlicky enough. Ugh. That's always my favorite part... my husband's veggie platter had undercooked falafel, mushy. A few times we've gotten all the way home and had no bread to eat our hummus. The new kid at the register is nice but seems really confused. I miss the old guys interacting with the customers.

Yelp
I've been a fan of Mr. Kabob for years and still am! Food is fresh, prices are quite reasonable, and service is friendly. Lots of options and combinations and many options are on the healthier side. I love Mr. Kabob!
google avatar

Erin D.

Yelp
Tip - Call ahead for a carry out, and it's great every time! Our favorite carry out spot in Berkley.

Steve N.

Yelp
I walked into Mr. Kabob at 640 pm and the staff was not responsive to our family they were doing a take out order and then they started pulling all the pans up and started to close (there was plenty of food in the pans). They are supposed to close at 8 and they were closing by 645pm. They staff said nothing to us so we left and found somewhere else to eat. I find this to be terrible service , I would not recommend this location.
google avatar

Virginia L.

Yelp
Delicious food! A little sad the portion was a bit tiny for lunch. It left me hungry still. I ordered the beef kabob with rice and soup. Beef was cooked to perfection, tender, and flavorful. Many places I've been tend to overcook the beef and it ruins the dish. I would definitely return if I was in the area again. I wish there was one closer. When I looked up a place to order take out via curbside pick up I wasn't expecting them to be located inside a gas station! Well who knew good food can come from a gas station? Seems to be a thing in MI!
google avatar

Russ H.

Yelp
I never would have guessed that one of the best Mediterranean places around would be in a gas station, but it is. Now first understand. They have a full kitchen and counter to take orders. And a full menu. The guys woking here are very cheetful and friendly, and helpful with suggestions if you're not familiar with the food. I usually get kabobs, kofta, and hummus. Also prepared quickly. I come here fairly often now.

Kay W.

Yelp
Good food. Very generous portions. We had a total of 7 meals from their dinner for 2! Will go again.
google avatar

Sierra B.

Yelp
I come to this place for my after workout late night meal. I feel good about eating their food, it's so healthy. I usually get a smoothie and a chicken kaft wrap. The staff is always so friendly and my wait time is never that long; even if it was, the wait would would be worth it. It's a popular spot for fast Mediterranean food. I definitely recommend this place and I hope you get here soon.

DIllon B.

Yelp
Paid $8 for a shawarma, didn't taste like anything and there wasn't much protein. I would not come back again.

Marie W.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. The people are friendly. The food is fresh. I have been here several times and never had a complaint.
google avatar

Geoffrey V.

Yelp
I really hate to give another bad review to a neighborhood spot but it's been 3 I'm a row now and obviously this place has gone too far downhill not to. I spent $50 on a mixed shawarma plate , some hummus , garlic and pickles. The shawarma was terrible. The meat was tough and flavorless and the chicken was just hunks of charred chicken with very little flavor. The pickles were little more than salty cucumbers. The rice was decent and the hummus was good which is how I came up with 2 stars. Such a bummer because the food used to be great and it's a neighborhood business which I would like to support. Can't justify the prices nor the quality. Now I need to find a new spot for middle eastern. I recommend you skip them.
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
You really cannot go wrong with Mr. Kabobs. While not overly amazing, it's definitely flavorful and hits the spot. I've had issues with this particular location and order accuracy. Food is a solid 4 out of 5 and service is also a 4.
google avatar

Sherry W.

Yelp
Great place for takeout!! Always hot and freshly made. You would never guess a small little place like this has such exceptional food. They also do catering!

Lisa S.

Yelp
Always fresh and delish. Pretty easy website to navigate and food is always ready and waiting.
google avatar

Amalia H.

Yelp
This is my go-to Middle Eastern restaurant! Everything I've had is good and the service is quick. For lunch I'll usually get the half chicken shawarma with grilled vegetables and crushed lentil soup on the side. It is a good size and I usually have leftovers for about half a meal the next day. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Jenni L.

Yelp
Had a very bad experience today which totally bummed me out. However, when you order a sandwich combo and they give you a $6.50 up charge for the salad which cost $.49 less than the sandwich I ordered am paying for at $6.99. I have worked in the food service industry since I was 20 years old and I have never experienced such a rude interaction with someone that works in a gas station restaurant. I will not be coming back the dude working was a complete jerk. They just lost a lot of business. The kid that rang me up was really nice, but it's not my fault that he did not tell me that he upcharged for a side salad would be is expensive as my sandwich. Doesn't make a lot of sense. Had he told me there would be a $6.50 up charge for my side salad, then I would have graciously declined.
google avatar

Carly A.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food and prepared quickly. Also, I love that they specify on the menu which items are gluten free! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
Really like Mr Kabob! Food is ready fast and really good. Their fattoush salad is really good, really like their lentil soup and chicken schwarma! After ordering, you go in and pickup at the counter in the back right of the gas station, then you bring the receipt to the front counter to pay.
google avatar

Eva M.

Yelp
Pros: Food is really good and authentic, especially considering that it's take out. They prepare it fast so I know it's ready to be picked up minutes after I place my order. Food is always hot as well. Portion sizes are huge! Each entree is about 3-4 solid lbs of food and last me multiple meals. Very worth it for the price you pay. I also really love their schwarma and falafel.  Cons: Person who picks up the phone to take your order is consistently rude and hangs up very abruptly, but I think it could be because they are rushed or due to language barrier. Food is inconsistent; you get different things and amounts on different days for the same entree. Some days, I get garlic sauce, and today, I didn't. Sometimes, it seems they just throw whatever they have inside your take out (I had one entree with mainly carrots for my grilled vegetables). Sometimes the grilled vegetables are charred. It's inconsistent.  Mr. Kabob is a take-out restaurant located in a gas station. There are only a couple of tables inside where you can eat at.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
I've always loved this place. Pre-COVID I came often, after my yoga class. My most recent meal was less wonderful unfortunately. My chicken schwerma sandwich was cold (but still yummy) and my baba ganouche was a different recipe. I liked the old style better. It used to be creamy and now it was more textured. I still love their house salad and their dressing. Lots of fresh pita was included in my order. My cold sandwich might have been from ordering online. Next time I'll walk in to see if it's hotter. Still recommend this place highly.
google avatar

Clarence B.

Yelp
Fresh. Tasty and fast. I never have a problem with my order and the food is always delicious. It's also super convenient and I never wait long even when it's packed.
google avatar

Rodrigo T.

Yelp
The gas station Arabic joint. Yes, I know you've heard of it, and I know you're curious. Everybody who's anybody who knows anybody will tell you how good the food here is. It's quick fast Arabic food slung out of a gas station convenient shop. I guess you can consider this shop as a hole in the wall. You line up, you order your food, wait a little bit, then pick up your food. There are high tables with high chairs if you choose to wanna eat your food in the premises. But most of the people who come here so usually just for take out. Deboned chicken, fallafel, babaganouj and lastly some shish kafta for the win. The Deboned chicken is very good,, that char grilled taste,, the juicy chicken,, yes!! You are a winner my friend. The fallafel has to be one of the best fallafel I have ever had ever. Babaganouj is very tasty. The shish kafta is outstanding! You wouldn't expect this kind of caliber from a gas station hole in the wall, but these guys definitely know what they're doing. I am a big fan now. We've enjoyed our dining experience here and will return for more in the future. Thank you so much Mr Kabob! You are definitely the truth!
google avatar

Ivy A.

Yelp
Good Schwarma, been coming here for years. Easy in and out. I've been to parties they catered and was impressed as well. Yummy garlic sauce and salads.
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
Ordered the cholesterol and the potassium raw juice, half tabouli half hummus, large house salad, 2 small crushed lentil soup, shawarma entree with rice and a hummus upgrade. The shawarma with rice and hummus was good. The half hummus and tabouli wasn't too bad, but would have rather have had them separately. The liquid from the tabouli made the hummus too runny. Bought some better made plain potato chips and it was a good tasty gf option with the hummus. Doing gf for Lent. My large house was fresh and I really enjoyed the dressing. The crushed lentil was okay as well as the raw juices for us. Would definitely get the salad and shawarma entree again.
