The Original Pronto Pup - Gastro Obscura

"Rockaway Beach, Oregon doesn’t seem like the type of place with a notable culinary history. This small beachfront community is a popular but remote destination along the Oregon Coast. However, one staple of American cuisine can credibly claim Rockaway Beach as its birthplace: the corn dog. The origins of the corn dog are surprisingly murky, however, Rockaway Beach has a strong claim to the throne. This origin story begins with a glum hot dog salesman named George Boyington, who was throwing stale hot dog buns to seagulls after a rainy Labor Day weekend ruined his stock in 1939. Looking for a way to create buns on demand, he and his wife Versa took some cornmeal batter, found a deep fryer, and hot dog history was born. Is this story the truth? Well, as the saying goes, history is written by the wieners, and there’s no doubt that George had a knack for promotion. George and Versa scaled up production of the novelty food item, now named the Pronto Pup, and Portland’s 1941 Pacific International Livestock Exposition became the debutante ball for the hot dog on a stick, as more than 15,000 Pronto Pups were sold, becoming a smash hit . The Boyingtons would go on to franchise the Pronto Pup, which remains a popular item even today in the upper Midwest, particularly in the state of Minnesota, where it is a state fair staple, often sold alongside unbranded corn dogs. There’s some controversy as to whether Pronto Pups and corn dogs are the same food item, as Pronto Pups are made with pancake batter. The official line is usually: “All Pronto Pups are corn dogs, but not all corn dogs are Pronto Pups.” Pronto Pups made their glorious return to the Oregon Coast in 2016, the brainchild of a Portland-based attorney named Anthony McNamer, who was shocked that the Pronto Pup’s birthplace didn’t have a statue, or even a corn dog stand of its own. He built The Original Pronto Pup as a roadside attraction, complete with a 30-foot-long fiberglass corn dog perched upon the roof, presumably the world’s largest. Visitors can also ride a custom-built mechanical corn dog, complete with saddle, for just a couple of quarters. In 2021, during the pandemic, McNamer sold The Original Pronto Pup to Diane Langer and Doug Hummer, a couple who sold their business and moved from Washington state to Rockaway Beach to keep the Pup operating in the same spirit. The gregarious couple offer a variety of corn dogs, including several vegetarian and specialty options, as well as soft-serve ice cream and conversation. And when you are riding a mechanical corn dog, with a Pronto Pup in hand, you’ll truly know the taste of Rockaway Beach’s greatest invention. Know Before You Go The Original Pronto Pup is open year-round, but hours and dates may vary based upon the season. Check the restaurant website for details. A note to any enthusiastic corn dog riders: the mechanical corn dog is only in operation during business hours." - ianlefk

Google
We got 4 dogs, a pickle, mozzarella dog, large tots, and 3 water bottles and it was still less than $40. The value alone is worth a stop but everything was fresh and delicious as well. They also have classic soft serve which is a welcome treat after a long day. If you blink you could miss Rockaway Beach but it’s well worth a stop just for the corn dogs.

Google
Fun restaurant to visit while passing through, cool atmosphere with the giant corndog on the roof and machine corndog you can ride. We got the original dogs, mozzarella dog and tots. The tots were very greasy and the dogs were a bit bland, however overall I would say it’s worth a visit just be prepared for a wait! Waited about 30 minutes for our deep fried food.

Google
This was a fun stop while on a little roadtrip. The corn dog is definitely different from what I’m used to, batter seems to be kind of sweet in my opinion, but it was good. I liked the regular corn dog and the pickle dog the most. Great prices, fast service, nice shop.

Google
Such a fun spot and felt like the prices were amazing for taking a family out! And great quality too. Went with hubby and 5 year old twins and we all enjoyed it! Loved how they had mini corn dogs, regular size and even other items like a pickle and zucchini! And they have fry sauce for taters and fries! I haven’t seen fry sauce in years and was so excited. And where else can you ride a corn dog!? Yup, that was awesome! I also heard they donate the money from the ride and thought that was really cool. Great service too! Everything also felt super clean and well taken care of.

Google
Busy place! Corn dogs with delicious fresh pancake like batter. The Louisiana dog had a nice spicey kick to it, it reminded me of a hot sausage if you’ve had one before! The original dog was the best. Tried the vegan dog out of curiosity and was not a crowd favorite Recommend original pup and Louisiana’s pup

Google
Service was fantastic. Food is great as well. It's a fun place to visit for a pronto pup corndog! They also sell t- shirts and sweatshirts. I was looking for a certain size of a sweatshirt, the owner went out of his way to find me what I was looking for. Customer service is a priority with them!! Highly recommend!

Google
If you are on the coast, you need to stop in. #1 you better ride the mechanical corn dog #2 Best corn dogs I have had in a very very long time. They also have many options from veggie to cheese to hot sausage. Make sure to get some fries and a soda and then go walk on the beach and enjoy. 10/10 eat here all the time

Google
This place is amazing. The owner who waited on us was really nice and told us more about the restaurant. The food was so delicious. We tried almost everything on the menu. There's a huge corndog on the roof. Then there's a little corn dog out front kids can ride. We will definitely be going there again.

Yelp
This place brings back a lot of memories! The food is hot and tastes great. Don't order the super if you aren't able to eat about a pound of hot dog! The tater tots were hot and a large order is almost too much for two to split. The service was friendly and quick Has limited space to sit inside but it was sunny and had plenty of space outside. Got to watch the Tillamook scenic train go by.

Yelp
We come here every time we're in Rockaway. Pup is short for corn dog. Fun items on the menu like a pickle pup, a cheesy pup, and a super pup. There's limited stool seating at the windows in the small restaurant. Plenty of outdoor seating at picnic tables, and my kids love the mechanical pup ride. It's family owned and they are super nice are efficient. I got an original pup, cheesy pup, and tots for $10. All condiments including ranch and marinara are free.

Yelp
Came here for the giant mechanical corndog but glad we did overall. 5/5 star experience. The decor is vintage diner style and had a lot of cool decorations. We started off by ordering a lot of dogs and the workers were friendly. I got the super dog, spicy dog, and pepperjack dog and that was a big mistake in a good way. It was ALOT of food. Doug heard us mention it was my father-in-law's birthday and proceeded to make our visit extra special. He gave us some quarters without us asking to allow my toddler to ride the corndog. He asked if we would like to try some chili with the corn dogs we ordered and gave us 2 mini containers which was plenty. He also came out with some deep fried Oreos and ice cream for dessert! Super thoughtful and really made all our days. The corndog was delicious. Be warned the super dog is a whole lotta dog with a larger beef than the normal dogs. I was able to finish it and ate half the spicy dog, which was also very good and my favorite between the 2 in flavor. Nice kick and juicy pork. Price is also amazing with the super dog being $6 and the spicy dog $4. Well worth the price compared to a lot of stuff in portland. Overall amazing food and experience, great service and will make this a staple visit every time we come to Rockaway. Pronto Pup is worth the visit!

Yelp
Stopped by during the week. No wait. Service was fast and friendly. The food was very hot and fresh. Pronto pup had great flavor! The tots were very crispy. It made for a very enjoyable afternoon to sit outside for a bit.

Yelp
Iconic? Quirky? Historical? All of the above. If you are on the northern coast you have to stop. Spotlessly clean. Friendly. It's a must see and visit in Rockaway.

Bigbelly P.

Yelp
Service is driver of rating. Food was a three. Batter way too salty for my taste. Thanks to the staff for the dog treats. Gave the young kids quarters to ride the big corn dog. Busy place on a Saturday afternoon. Friendly. Clean. Would go back after some beers.

Yelp
Pronto Pup claims to be the "Birthplace of the Pronto Pup + The Home of the Giant Corn Dog." We learned later that there are several places that claim to be the birthplace of the corn dog. We decided to try the original and spicy pups with fries and tots. We placed our order and found a table outside while our corn dogs were being prepared. We liked everything. I did like the tots a little better than the fries. Next time we find our way back to Rockaway Beach, we will enjoy more corn dogs at Pronto Pup.

Yelp
16 of us ate here yesterday. The service was great. The place was packed. We all got either a regular or big corn dog. Every single one of us felt sick after eating here. Not in a food poisoning way. But just in a greasy, heavy sick feeling. The seed oils they cook their food in makes you feel so crappy! I wish they would update their oil to a healthier version so people didn't feel so sick!
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
They have the best veggie corn dogs. I do mean the best. Just hot. Good, and delicious.
google avatar

Deonna B.

Yelp
We are going 2 stars. Due toThe food was ok The customer service by the owner is why we will not return. Very rude I'm my opinion. and nobody said hello or welcomed us both times I said hello
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
You had me at the Dill. Very delicious. Batter was not overbearing. Pups come out quick. Very tasty recommend stopping by in or out of town. YUM!

Yelp
Before coming here I actually read the reviews and about the place. The Pronto Pup is all about its own batter that is not a corn meal based batter. Also, they do hand dip all the items offered. We found the place to be clean and well kept. While the line was out the door when we arrived, it maybe took ten minutes before getting our food. Not bad. The prices were cheap in our opinion. Something to note, I saw a person in front of me feel a little bothered that they served the soft serve cones turned upside down in a cup due to the softness of the soft serve. Personally, it wouldn't bother me but just a heads up for those who it might. We ordered two veggie pups, a zucchini pup, a cheesy pup (mozzarella), and a large fry. Our food came with a ranch for the zucchini and marinara for the cheesy pup. They also offer ketchup, mustard, and fry sauce in pumps with little cups at the counter. We didn't finish all the food but we wanted to try the assortment. For us, the best thing was the veggie pronto pups and fries. While busy, the tables seemed to turn over quickly and staff came out frequently to wipe them down. They do their best to get the food out quickly. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

Yelp
Great little roadside Attraction! More than just a hot dog stand , it's an American Novelty! Ride a mechanical bull styled BUCKING CORN PUP ! What a laugh ! I have always enjoyed Pronto Pups at Midwest State Fairs . Never seen ProntoPups' famous CORNDOGS so far WEST ! What an unexpected treat on our road-trip !

Yelp
This is a unique place to stop while visiting the beach, not only do they have the longest for dog, they've got vegetarian corndogs! The service was quick, it's a walk up inside with benches outside and tall tables inside. They have a large parking lot across from the entrance. I tried the zucchini dog which I was so excited about but the zucchini was pretty thick and not seasoned, so it wasn't my favorite. I loved the fried cheese dog. Lots of dipping sauces to choose from. I'd go back for sure. The tater tots are very good and shareable.

Erica C.

Yelp
The food was great and the staff was welcoming. We were a large group of people of different ethnicities and were a little hesitant to have a vacation on the Oregon coast as it is not a very diverse place. It was a welcome surprise to have such a warm reception at Pronto Pup. A staff member even gave us quarters for the kids to ride the mechanical corn dog ride outside. The food was great, arrived hot and we were stuffed afterwards. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Love the food! Like the owner. Just dont come looking for your average "corn dog" as these are different. wish there were more locations.
google avatar

Mo G.

Yelp
Original and spicy dog were delicious!!! Cute lil place right by our air b n b with cute hot dog ride in the front! We came back in an attempt to ride it off hours and didn't see the posted sign that it operated during business hour only and lost 4 quarters LOL! My buddy bought a cute sweatshirt as souvenir! Cute place and a must stop.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Stopped here since I hadn't had a corn dog in years. Cute little place with picnic tables outside. Food was average. Service was good.

Al L.

Yelp
Cute place with even better food. Fun stop in Rockaway. Get the pickle dog. Clean and affordable.

Cheyne N.

Yelp
Fun little place to stop by to check out. The Superdog is literally a foot long but it's also wide. One of the workers brought out a sample of chili and it's definitely worth getting to upgrade your dog
google avatar

Yelp
The bad reviews made me not want to go but I've always wanted to try it so we went! On national corndog day! We ordered one jalapeño cheddar pup, 3 minis, a pickle pup, small order of tater tots, and a side of cheese. We misunderstood about the cheese side. I thought I could get mozzarella because the kids love that but for melted cheese side its gonna be nacho cheese. No regrets there! It was a long wait and we got a mozzarella cheese dog instead of a pickle one but the kids were happy about it! I'm normally not a big corndog fan but when you get it fresh like these, hard not to become a fan! Plus the history and the mechanical corndog ride! It's an experience worth having.

Yelp
Delicious corn dogs in three sizes! The cutest little restaurant with a giant corn dog on top caught our attention. We were happy after ordering and sitting outside the dogs were delivered to our table in 5 minutes. Not only is it a cute clean restaurant but the dogs and fries are delicious and the employees are super friendly! The chili is a tasty dipper for the fries. The manager (or owner?) came by a few times to see if we needed anything. We will definitely be back. Thank you Pronto pip for your great hospitality, good service and most of all delicious food!

Kelsey M.

Yelp
Came in with my mom and aunt to get some nice corn dogs, while in the parking lot (empty at the time) there were no instructions on which was to park, so we parked at an angle. While waiting for our food the owner came in and abruptly goes "WHOS KIA IS THAT YOU'RE TAKING UP TWO SPOTS" loud enough to have the couple close to us say something. So my aunt went out and moved the car, while she was sitting in it waiting for my mom and I to get our food the owner went over to her sitting in her car and said to leave his parking lot and don't come on his property again. Lol I'm not sure what this guys issues was- maybe he was mad it was a slow Sunday? But you'd think that he'd be respectful to his customers. I won't be back.

Alexis R.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars I would, walked in no one greeted us not even a hi. Every single person in this establishment was on their phone, which if you ask me is very unsanitary since they are handling people's food. I would not recommend, I recommend you go elsewhere with better customer service and non butt hands handling your food.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
I liked the signage explaining the history of the corn dog. Super long wait, but not that many people. Nice outside seating. There's a fun ride for the kids that makes for a good picture op. Owner/manager was friendly. And kudos to the dedicated little kid who brings out the food.
google avatar

Kimberly N.

Yelp
This is the home of the original corndog! Of course this is not the place for a gourmet meal - ignore the bad reviews! My husband and I stopped by on our Oregon coast road trip right before they closed for the day. The staff was friendly and patient despite more people slipping in before they locked the doors. I was pleased that they offer veggie corndogs so I got that while my husband got the original. The corndogs were tasty and we are happy that we were able to try them at the place that created them.
google avatar

Monica R.

Yelp
Solid, simple menu that is executed perfectly. Everything from the fries to the pups are delicious and priced just right. Would definitely go back, and recommend it if you're in the area. A bonus was how kind and thoughtful the staff was. Really thought they went went out of their way to make us feel special.
google avatar

Glenn F.

Yelp
Really good corn dogs. The Louisiana spicy one was great. Bring an appetite for the jumbo. It's a lot of corn dog for sure!

Marcie B.

Yelp
Amazing! Our expectations were blown out of the water, not only was the variety surprising but the taste of each was delicious and the minimal cost for each item is unheard of! I wish there were more pronto pups outside of Oregon.
google avatar

Ricky R.

Yelp
I am shocked not to see a higher rating. I dont know if there is a quality issue or they just have off days. I loved it. We were drawn in by the giant corndog, but stayed for a delicious meat stick. We had a decent size group and were able to try just about everything on the menu. I was happy with everything we ate. Everything was cooked through. The corn batter crispy and nicely flavored. I thought across the board amazing. My few notes. Get two regular dogs over a foot long. The dogs in the regular size dogs are better. That is not to say the foot longs are bad, just the regular dogs are better. The pickle is similar to those big mama pickles. Great flavor, good in the corn, but better in normal batter. I still really liked it and would grab another. Oh and the fry sauce was stupid good. I would say on the tots I would prefer a touch more seasoning, but the fry sauce made them remarkable. Everything was solid for us. If you are in Rockaway I dont know why you wouldnt visit. I will say I question their claim as to them being the first corndog, I feel like this is a claim every town makes and its impossible to prove one way or another.
google avatar

Yelp
My family visited 7/15/23 and had a great experience. It was our one year old's first visit and he loved his kiddie pup and his fries! Us adults ordered original dogs, a pepper jack cheesy pup and a pickle pup and they were all delicious as well. IMO, the corn dogs here are the best you can get. The workers were all SO nice and one of them even offered to take a picture of us all in front of the mechanical corn dog. It's super rare that we can get everyone in one photo so it was a nice memento to take home with us.
google avatar

Clara N.

Yelp
My family and I were recently visiting the area and HAD to stop by because of the giant hotdog on the roof of the building. This cute family owned business did exceed my expectations for a corn dog. I highly suggest getting a cheese corn dog because it was truly a grilled cheese sandwich on a stick. The service was great, and the fries were even better!

George J.

Yelp
Sad little place that closes at 5 pm? Pulled in at 4:50 and as I was walking to the door the man locked the door in my face and flipped the closed sign around. Guess I'll never be back
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
This is great stop to grab a bite to eat when we explored the Oregon Coast a few years ago. We weren't that hungry, but how could we not visit the giant corndog and have a taste! We ordered a single Original Pup which was a 100% beef dog. On the outside, the breading had a light crispiness and did not feel too oily or heavy. On the inside the hot dog was flavorful and juicy with a little snap. This place has a 50's diner vibe, complete with the red ketchup and yellow mustard squeezable bottles, gray tin napkin dispensers, even down to the red and white checkered-like plastic tablecloth. And this restaurant surely lived up to it's name, once we sat down and we got settled with our drinks, in no time our food was ready, a Pronto Pup! Give this place a try, they are right off the 101, and you can't miss it!

Sam S.

Yelp
Best dog on the west coast, breakfast lunch or dinner. This be bussin' bussin' THANKS PRONTO PUP!!! Ps, best fry sauce I've ever had
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
This was a fun lunch stop. A small shop but it was busy and they dealt well with the high number of guests. The corn dogs were yummy and very well priced. We enjoyed it! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Sara Y.

Yelp
Super good! They claim to have invited the corn dog but Wikipedia says otherwise. Everything tasted pretty good and prices were reasonable. Kids dog was small, would have just ordered a regular for my son. Footlong was huge! Spicy dog was certainly spicy but good. Cheese dog was excellent too. Only reason for not 5 stars is the taste of the footlong dog. The hot dog tasted bland and like lower quality.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Pretty quick and cheap eats. The mozzarella dog was actually very tasty. Got lots of food for under $30 that fed the whole family. Hard to do these days. Staff was super friendly. Can't go wrong with a good corn dog.
google avatar

Izaak F.

Yelp
Ignore the unkind/shaky reviews, check your expectations at the door and go get a tasty bite to eat. If you're looking for a life altering experience, well, why are you looking to eat a corn dog hoping to get a gourmet meal that will change your life? No expert here but you might need to examine your approach to self-fulfillment. It was a very tasty corn dog with crispy (but not burnt) fries and good soft serve. Some of the reviews had me prepared for a mediocre experience, but I decided to roll the dice and it couldn't have been further from that. Pronto Pup was clean, the food was hot & reasonably priced and came in generous portions with wonderfully kind of service. The staff was most helpful and interested in seeing us happy with the meal. The corn dog ride out front was great for my kid and they even put the quarters out for you to use in the machine. That's right, the roadside fanfare isn't a money sink here, it's free: they're all about seeing smiles on kids' faces. Great bang for the buck and definitely worth a stop. I don't eat corn dogs often, but now I will every time I'm in Rockaway Beach.
google avatar

Jen V.

Yelp
For a place that specializes in corn dogs I would expect it to be the best batter and dog around - but it was super lackluster. It's fine I guess to just get rid of the craving but really hoped for more. Soft serve was good at least. Service was hit or miss depending on who you interacted with.
google avatar

K B.

Yelp
This place is soooo good. I was wowed by how delicious a simple corn dog can be, but it's a great stop along the coastline. I got the original and jalapeño cheddar and both were delicious. The breading was soft and sweet. We'll priced corn dogs too. One for $4 or three for $10.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Second time eating here just love it. I drive 100 miles to come get a corn dog. Won't disappoint. Also you can ride the mechanical corn dog!
google avatar

Star S.

Yelp
You're driving along 101 and there it is... off in the distance.. a giant corn dog on the roof of a small building! The corndog you (or your kids) can RIDE! You pull into the parking lot across the street and make your way to beach snack HEAVEN! Corndogs were invented in Rockaway Beach in the 30s. and over the years, Pronto Pups quickly spread across the US from coast to coast. Corn dogs are obviously still the main item here. You can choose from options of regular corndogs, kid sized corndogs, Super Pups (all 100% beef) and they also offer cheesy pups (think a deep fried cheese stick), spicy pup, or even pups made from zucchini or pickles! You can also add tots or fries and they have a small selection of soft serve and drinks. The menu is simple and priced at a great price point. They list costs for either 1 dog or 3. (Save a few bucks if your order more). While the place screams FUN! and has a lot of options, I wish I could say I was a bigger fan of the FLAVOR. Our tots didn't have much flavor. It's like they didn't salt the potatoes before cooking but they didn't salt before serving them either. The corndogs were almost opposite. I thought the franks were fine. Hot, snappy but just ok tastewise. The batter had an excellent crisp and was light, fluffy and not greasy at all! That's hard to do with a corndog. Unfortunately the batter was salty almost to the point of being bitter. Not even a hint of sweetness. We had a total of 3 corndogs (my husband intending to eat 2). My husband only ate 1; while I simply took 2 bites before throwing mine away. Take the kids here or stop by for a quick corndog ride or drink. But don't waste your time thinking you're going to get a great meal.

Yelp
Tried this place this past weekend. Such a cute little place to visit with tasty food. The owner was so very friendly and even gave my pup a complementary hotdog. We got there right at opening and didn't have to wait long for our food but drove past later in the day and it was packed so get there early.
google avatar

Thomas A.

Yelp
Fast, hot and clean! A simple product that is cooked to order and then run out to your table. The tater tots were also cooked perfectly and our waiter even brought a hot dog out for our pooch. We hd a really enjoyable experience. I DO recommend!

Yelp
Came here for the first time on the 4th of July weekend. This pandemic has brought us all to the edge of sanity. Its good to see a business still operating. Pronto Oup is cranking out the munchies today but the customers Do Not Care About The Well Being Of Others. So, Consumer Beware. I'd say about half the customers are compliant. Anywho. We ordered several Corn dogs and a couple sodas. Now the waiting game...... Hungry. Hungry. Hungry. I want to bite a corn dog. Hungry, hungry, hungry. I wanna bite a dog. Corn dogs are here. Super yummy looking and uber hot. Now the taste..... ????? What the????? First Problem. My Sister ordered a Mozzarella Cheese Stick. Our order comes but were thinking they got our order wrong. No Cheese Sticks. At least, everything looks alike. I bite into what looks like a Corn Dog to find out they didn't mark the different items. I bit into a cheese stick. My Sister, being a gracious person was ok with me taking a bite. She said it tastes like corn. I didn't notice a difference in taste either. My Corn Dog however was delicious. Dipped in Yellow Mustard. Hot. Crunchy. Perfect taste of Beef Hot Dog and Corn Batter. With a Coke....ya. it's like that. I could have eaten two more, easily. Did I want to go wait in line again? Nope. The one was good enough. The memories will have to do for now. This Hungry Bear will be back!

Brianna J.

Yelp
Incredibly rude owner. Accidently drove on the lawn and said he wouldn't serve us a corn dog. Total accident and sogns should be posted. Won't ever be back

Greg M.

Yelp
Been coming for years and this stop at Pronto was the best ever. The original was better than ever!! The Deep Fried Oreo was a first and I would get it again. Our large family, 15 of us, was a bit of a challenge but the young man at the counter handled us like a magician. The kitchen responded with speed and added a little extra. Best quick food at a very reasonable price!! And the Ambience ? Very clean, truly a first class outfit !!

Yelp
We love this place! Amazing food and service. We had our dog and were greeted with an unexpected pup dog! That was so sweet and he thought that was grand. Everyone was so kind to us. The atmosphere was clean and and we took so many cute pictures with the family that was here visiting town. The food was incredible. There was literally something for everyone. I'm a vegetarian and had the veggie corn dog and a pickle corn dog. They were delicious. The pickle is huge and crisp. We all shared it dipped in ranch and it was a treat. We alternated dipping the corn dogs in fry sauce and mustard/ketchup and loved every bite. Such a fun place! Just to add to the experience we noticed the owner run out and bring Gatorades and corndogs to the garbage men that were working. What a kind gesture. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Took super long for my food some of the bread on the corn dog was green I complained and a guy named Doug the owner said I was lying and started yelling at me and telling me to leave and never gave me any good food or a refund terrible experience
