"Rainbow Cone will open its first North Side location, sharing space with Buona Beef. The two restaurants merged in 2019, and this is their first combined spot north of Navy Pier in 96 years." - Naomi Waxman

After a failed attempt to try the Original Rainbow cone, I have come for a successful attempt at obtaining the rainbow cone! Maybe rainbow cup in this case, but I can see why some people may favor the pistachio ice cream over the others. It was an experience trying all the flavors of the rainbow at once. The fruits were overpowering. But I enjoyed all the flavors individually; especially pistachio and strawberry since they had bits of pistachio and chunks of strawberry. I wasn’t a fan of the cherries in the ice cream. Staff at this location are extremely friendly and really go above and beyond what I would expect for customer service. I’ll try the other flavors next time or just stick with pistachio.

Tried the Original Rainbow cone twice on my trip to Chicago and I loved it! A true Chicago Original. The presentation and flavors worked perfectly together! Would love to go back and order the cake slice or maybe the Ice Cream Sandwich version of the rainbow cone again one day!

Google
Our family loved the rainbow cone! All the flavors were very tasty, and it was fun to watch the staff build the tower on our cones. The original rainbow cone flavors are: Orange Sherbet, Pistachio, Palmer House, Strawberry, and Chocolate. All sliced (not scooped) into a cone or a cup. You can also order these flavors separate, or choose from numerous other seasonal flavors. They also have some non-dairy alternatives for those who might have allergies.

Clean new establishment, nice costumer service. I was so excited to try Chicago rainbow ice cream. It was great to have all those flavors together, but unsure why it was kinda melted and messy. Family did enjoyed the experience. See myself going back to repeat.

I got a free rainbow cone on Mother’s Day. The staffs are friendly. My son doesn’t like certain flavors (I’m fine with all), but it’s good that he can choose what he likes from five flavors. The cone is quite big to me. It’s better to share with others. We also ordered root beer float. My son likes it. Overall very good experience.

I've been a fan of rainbow cone since my first time having it at Lollapalooza 12 years ago and was so excited when they expanded and opened stores everywhere. Now my son 2.5, is just as obsessed with Rainbow Cone, he ask for it everyday. My poor review for this location is attributed to the service I received this Saturday by Lasly M. Three things went wrong 1. She refused to sell us a baby Rainbow Cone, and said that was for people who purchased kids meals only, which is a rule I had never heard before and I was extremely surprised by it as I was getting the cone for my son, who I had purchased off the regular menu for. 2. Like previously mentioned I've been enjoying rainbow cone for over 12 years, so I know that previously the original location would refuse to make changes to the rainbow come due to trademarks, but ever since they expanded, I've had no issues requesting for double pistachio, and the staff is useless very friendly. Lesley refused to make any changes, without explaining why or offering an alternative. 3. I purchased three Rainbow Cones, and each of them was at best what the lombard location would describe as a small or medium rainbow cone. Again, I go to rainbow cone multiple times a week so I know how they "should" look. I don't know what this woman's problem was with us, but she ruined our Saturday ritual. I didn't complain in store, because I wanted to protect my sons feelings about his favorite ice-cream place. Needless to say, I will be doing my best to avoid the Skokie location moving forward.

Google
I thought the rainbow cone would taste so sweet and unhealthy but I was wrong! It was actually so refreshing and light and so good! Perfect for hot summer day!! My mom got other flavor and it was also so good! Highly recommended 👍

Yelp
Took son to The Original Rainbow Cone for their Valentine's Day Special: Buy One Get One Free. Such a great treat! This location is inside Buona Beef. Parking: private parking lot with plenty of seating inside and many tables outside I love all 5 flavors: Orange Sherbert, Pistachio, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), Strawberry and Chocolate. One can also get 1 flavor; son loves Orange Sherbert. Staff is friendly and welcoming. Service is excellent! The place is happy and bright. Great place for all ages. The place is a Chicago institution for over 95 years, original location opened in Chicago's south side. Locations planned to open in more midwest locations and in differet states like Florida this year. Love to come here for a happy dessert treat.

Yelp
Add a "bow" to the end of this rainy day and get yourself a rainbow cone ice cream quart! It comes with 4 cones and it'll last you 3 days.... If you don't eat it all in one eat it's so delicious and honestly doesn't get talked about enough! Start your weekend off wonderfully!! The service was quick at the drive thru I didn't even know you could do this but it did last us 3 days which I'm surprised about!

Yelp
We were on our way home from a rained-out Cubs game and wanted something to cheer us up - and after my 18 years of living in the Chicago area I had never had rainbow cone. This location is paired with w Buona Beef, so beware of Italian beef smells! The rainbow cone is a little counter inside, giving a food-court vibe. You can get the rainbow cone flavors or a choice of a couple of other normal ice cream flavors. I went with a kiddie rainbow cone and it was the perfect size for me. You really would think that these flavors would be odd together, but they were pretty good! Not a place I'd go all the time, but definitely a fun chicago treat!

Yelp
The Rainbow Cone is a Chicago classic. I'm so happy that they opened a location up north. All of the ice cream flavors on one cone was dreamy I even bought a quart to bring home

Yelp
Been going here for years now. First had it at Lollapallooza in 2016. Loved the combo and colors of the ice cream. Amazing Taste!

Monic L.

Yelp
This location is shared with Buona beef so after dinner just head right over to grab dessert which is exactly what I did. I chose the original rainbow cone because why not? I wasn't sure if I was going to like the mixture of flavors but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's one of those you have to get it because it's a picture must. I was impressed with how the worker scooped the slices to put on the cone. I thought it was so neat. My favorite flavor put of the five was the Palmer House with Pistachio coming in close second. I love the fact that when you order a cone you get a cone drip tray. Such a cute little place inside Buona to get some ice cream.

Yelp
Living on the south side for the first 20+ years of my life, I can tell you I went to the Original Rainbow at least 40-50 times. One thing I always remembered was how large the Rainbow Cone was especially when you got it in the waffle cone. So heading to the Skokie location last night, I was really looking forward to it since I haven't had a Rainbow cone in about 2 years. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. As seen in the attached photo, the amount of ice cream doesn't come close to what I remembered getting served at the Southside location. I'm not sure to chalk it up since it's not the new location or if portions were decreased to the pandemic. However the cost of that cone was about $8-$9. Moving forward if I go back, I'd rather take home a quart and call it a day. So disappointing.

Yelp
I have to say I have always wanted to experience Rainbow Cone and unfortunately I should have gone to the original. I saw Anna Belaval on WGN do around town so I was excited to go. Skokie is much closer to my home so we went there. I agree with one of the reviews the portion was minuscule. It was like a tiny sliver of each flavor all together 1 scoop for $6.95. It was delicious the flavor combination really pairs well together. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, but very disappointed in the portion, especially for the cost. If I try it again, I will go to the original. Hopefully, they are more generous.

Yelp
An iconic Chicago food! Love having a closer location. Baby scoops are more of a mix of flavors than layers - wish they had smaller square scoops so you still got the experience. Chocolate is the weakest flavor - maybe someday they will replace with ube!

Ann M.

Yelp
I went here for dessert after eating a sandwich at Buona's in their shared dining space. I'm not an Original Rainbow Cone fan, because I don't like some of the flavors included in it, but I do love their other ice creams. I had tried the Cookies and Cream once from their food (cone?) truck this summer during a birthday party, and I was pleasantly surprised that they carried other ice creams besides the ones in the Original Rainbow Cone. This time I tried the mint chip, and it was delicious - full of little chocolate bits, and very minty. I'm definitely a fan. I'll probably eat my way through some of their other flavors on future visits!

Kristy F.

Yelp
Came here to try the popular rainbow ice cream on a late week night evening. Easy parking, no line, nice service, and reasonable prices. I enjoyed the mash-up of flavors and would venture back here again for a quick fix.

Jennie M.

Yelp
First time having a rainbow cone (in a cup) and it was very yummy! The ice cream is creamy. The combo of flavors work well together. Also tried the mint flake. Good combo of mint &chocolate.

Britney L.

Yelp
delicious! i was iffy at first since i'm not usually a fan of pistachio or chocolate ice cream, but somehow all the flavors in the rainbow cone complimented one another so nicely that i finished the entire thing. the chocolate didn't taste too artificial and they gave u a lil disc attached to the cone so that the ice cream wouldn't drip on u

Lisa A.

Yelp
This one is rather new and located inside the Buona Beef restaurant. They were still settling in the server said so not all the choices I found on their websites was available. You can count on the rainbow cone for sure though and almost every one eating ice cream was eating the rainbow cone! I opted for the Palmer House which is part of the rainbow. I'm not a fan of orange sherbet and strawberry, but will most definitely have the Palmer House again. You've got to try it and based on the ingredients I couldn't have guessed it will be one of my all time favorites. They have other desserts but they had me at P.H. I'll be back. Service was great by the way. Can not be said of Oberweiss which is inconsistent. I think they have soft serve as well.

Rachel K.

Yelp
I think the combination of flavors for the Original Rainbow Cone don't really go well together, but I did really like the holder it comes in

Susan B.

Yelp
Been meaning to go to a Rainbow Cone, and popped by this location. Quick and clean, loved the drip tray for the cone. I ordered a Baby Cone and was pleasantly surprised by the portion size!

Karl H.

Yelp
Childhood memories. Love rainbow cone and grew up near their original location. So happy they are closer to my current home. I recommend everyone try the rainbow cone at least once.

NaywriChi W.

Yelp
This is the fifth location and it's inside of Buona Beef. Staff and service is excellent!

J M.

Yelp
You can hardly ever go wrong with the tastiest ice cream around: Rainbow Cone. I grew up with the original Rainbow Cone location on the south side and now living in Skokie, I am very excited to have a location near me! The classic flavor combination is still true to the original, and still tastes great!

Omar D.

Yelp
Instagram Worthy! Imagine your family getting Ice Cream the way it used to be, the way it's supposed to be, the Rainbow Way. Beautiful facility, super clean and enjoyable! Rainbow Cone is really Instagram worthy and really a destination Ice Cream cone! Make sure to enjoy the plentiful seating inside or out!

Nawal N.

Yelp
Don't expect to get the same size cone as you would in any other rainbow location. Got a baby cone a small cone and a large and they were all the same size. Same size of a baby cone that you would get in the Lombard location or even the trucks. I tried explain that large should've been bigger but they said because I didn't get all the flavors (I removed one and replaced it with extra scoop of chocolate instead) that they couldn't stack them. Which makes no sense I get the same thing ALLLLLLL THE TIME. They stack it fine and it's still the same size I paid for a large so I should get a large. They should've charged me for 3 baby cones if that's the case. Almost $7 for a large only to get a baby cone.

Gaith H.

Yelp
Bad and rude service. The girl on the ice cream cashier was so rude A good place like this should have a better service

Yav A.

Yelp
The legendary Rainbow cone finally graces it presence on the Northside and lived up to the hype. We got the Rainbow cone which contains orange sherbert, pistachio, palmer house (aka new york cherry), strawberry and chocolate. Definitely, we will be back for more.

Lauren B.

Yelp
Definitely worth it! I mean rainbow cone ice cream is amazing! The service was incredible. The restaurant was open at 10, my kids had flu shots at 10, and we zoomed over from Lurie to get ice cream. The manager opened early for us and was ridiculously kind! He even added a little extra special topping for my daughters sundae because she was sad. Such a great experience!

Sharon S.

Yelp
I absolutely love there ice cream. I can't get enough of there ice cream. I'm so grateful they have a permanent location in Skokie now.
