The Orion Amphitheater is a beautiful venue and a definite asset to Huntsville, Alabama. I've attended two events there, and unfortunately, both times I encountered ticketing issues. The venue uses AXS for ticketing, and while the app technically "works," it has never worked properly for me. That alone made entry more frustrating than necessary.
My bigger concern, however, is the lack of logistical coordination. For the Kevin Hart show on April 11, 2025, attendees were sent detailed instructions outlining what could and couldn't be brought into the venue. It clearly stated that photos and video were prohibited, but small cameras (those that could fit in a front pocket) were allowed. Despite following these guidelines, we stood in line for over an hour only to be told that our phones had to be sealed in pouches. While the requirement itself wasn't the issue, the execution was a logistical mess.
Here's what the process looked like:
1. Initial checkpoint - Someone glances at your personal items: water bottles, handbags, seats, etc.
2. Phone pouch distribution - There were no clear lines or direction. One table had three staff members simply standing there with bags in front of them, appearing unsure of what to do.
3. Alcohol wristband checkpoint - Again, no structured lines. Another bottleneck.
4. Final security check - Your items are re-checked and you're wanded by security.
5. The space between Gate #1 and the end of this entire process is less than 100 feet - resulting in gridlock, confusion, and chaos.
Given the price of the tickets and the additional "convenience" fees, the lack of operational planning was disappointing.
We ended up leaving before the show ended. It was cold, and after the chaotic entry process, we weren't interested in repeating that experience on the way out. At the exits, around eight people were assigned to unlock the phone pouches, which might work for a nearly sold-out show -- but only barely.
Lastly, for a venue charging premium prices, I was surprised by the lack of comfort features. Other outdoor venues in hot climates offer misters. The Orion has no heaters for chilly nights, and no misters for sweltering ones. So, be warned -- if it's cold, you'll be cold. If it's hot, you'll be hot. There's no in-between.
