"The Owl Room swings open on Friday, March 10, reviving the two-story space that formerly housed Marvin (2007 14th Street NW). D.C. nightlife veterans Scott Herman and Ken Brobeck conceptualized the new club alongside Marvin’s returning co-owner Eric Hilton. To start, there’s no food in sight—only beers, wines, and cocktails. Over its 13-year run, Marvin—named after D.C. native Marvin Gaye—was known for its crowded roof deck and raucous DJ nights until COVID-19 shut down the bistro and bar for good. Three years later, the anticipated Owl Room replacement with a 300-person capacity will operate more like a bonafide music venue with a box office. Owl Room plans to operate Wednesdays through Sundays. A full-scale, ’70s-chic renovation dripping with disco balls and artsy odes to owls reimagines the space with a main dance floor and stage for live performances, plus a second-floor bar with an open-air patio. A upper lounge area is designed for smaller parties and private events. Owl Room’s debut cocktail list includes a 'Bitter Bitch' with Citadelle gin, Ramazzotti amaro, and sweet vermouth; 'Smoke Show' (Ilegal mezcal, lime, ginger beer); and a Bacardi-and-banana liqueur 'Banana Hammock.' The spirit-free 'Solarize' and 'Kicks, Like a Mule' are named for classic DJ tracks. Cocktails are $12 each. Happy hour from Wednesday to Friday (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.) shaves $2 off all cocktails, rail drinks, and draft beers. 'D.C. has had a vibrant underground dance scene for longer than many people realize,' says general manager Ken Brobeck. He held the same role at U Street Music Hall, the iconic D.C. nightclub that closed in 2020 after a 10-year run. Like the recently relocated Eighteenth Street Lounge in Shaw, the new Owl Room wants to revive and preserve the city’s longstanding DJ culture that went dormant during the pandemic. The lineup for Owl Room’s opening weekend includes the D.C. return of Ultra Nate’s Deep Sugar out of Baltimore, as well as homegrown pioneers Dance Club (Joyce, Tommy C, and Baronhawk) and Keenan Orr. Cover charges will typically range between $20 to $30 when a visiting DJ or special guest swings through. For now, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights waive entry fees, pending on programming. A strong showing of local and national artists, some with their own record labels, are booked to perform during the first few weekends. That includes Beautiful Swimmers, Charles Feelgood, drum and bass legend Doc Scott, DJ Lisa Frank, DJ Slant, Wayne Davis, Mathias, and Grand Ancestor Sound System. 'We look forward to using our collective experiences to build a home for both our artists, and for our diverse community of music lovers,' says Brobeck, in a statement. Door times will vary, and tickets and information on upcoming shows will be available online." - Tierney Plumb

Fun spot for a private event! Spacious bar with fun decorations, a long cushioned bench along the wall, and cool patio for fresh air. Our event’s food was tasty with a really fresh cheese and hummus spread and great little chicken sliders. The DJ when it opened to the public was fun and not too loud (could still have a conversation). Would go again!

Great vibes and solid residencies. Come for good drinks, righteous rhythms. Music and space to dance. Glad that they have revived the area.

Went there for a queer night, DJ was great and venue was ok, but pretty empty. Ordered a classic drink the bartender didn’t know. Rather than asking she made me the wrong drink and when I said that’s not what I ordered she said “don’t get an attitude I’ve been a bartender for 30 years and nobody has ordered that in at least 10.” In general vibes were off but bartender with bangs and glasses did not make me feel welcome. Walked out right after despite paying a cover. Won’t be back

Went on saturday for opening weekend. A fun vibe. Wish there was more of a dedicated dance floor. The sound system could be better, point the speakers at the crowd and not the dj?? LOL flash is still my fav, but would come back.

The music and artists that they bring up to showcase is AMAZING, a lovely sharing of queer/poc in the techno world. BUT I will have to say I probably won’t be cominf back after it being my first time this past weekend for DC Pride ! Got in around 10:30 it was kind of dead but the music was soooo good so it didn’t even matter the crowd. Had one drink for like the two hours I was there soon had to leave to meet a friend and me and my friends had asked the “bouncer” if we were able to show the stamp and come back in, she claimed “we would be fine”. Come back around 1:40 to get back in and the “bouncer” who is a middle aged lady immediately changed her demeanor once we arrived and I started to show her my stamp and she cut me off by saying “We been having to kick people out due to intoxication and rough house so I’m not for sure if we can do that…” She then proceeds to look at me specifically and say “This is mainly for YOU, I don’t know if YOUR CALM NOW or what?” Me and my friends were completely shocked and confused because we were all on the brink of going to sleep then and there. There was no intoxication of any sort from me or my two friends, AT ALL ! It felt and seemed like she was just making up scenarios as to us not coming in or she simply got me mistaken for someone else? I’m not sure but all I know was I was too tired to even argue with her because honestly she started out at 100 and had a nasty forceful attitude to begin with before we even said a word. Also mind you I have never seen or spoke to this “bouncer” besides when I first arrived completely sober as well. So I figured it was pointless and why would I want to go somewhere where you don’t feel welcomed ! To whoever the old aged gray hair door person you all have, I suggest get ANOTHER ! She pointless 💋

This place was completely empty at 11 on Saturday when I came here with a wedding party. Sitting upstairs near the patio and it completely smells like urine, disgusting.

Great DJ, good crowd atmosphere as well. I like that there are two different floors and an outdoor patio as well.

Yelp
If you used to hang out at Marvin (one of DC's most beloved staples) then you will be very familiar with the space and the location. But don't expect for the exact same experience because that just can't be re-created. Additionally, the space and outdoor deck does look a bit different. However, they've been bringing in some awesome DJs (especially on weekday nights, like Jahsonic who helped to make Marvin Mondays epic!) Drinks are a bit on the higher side considering they're typically not serving up craft cocktails and tip is included. It's still a little hard to feel out what the vibe will be here long term, but happy to see the space is still bringing joy and a lot of familiar spaces into a space that people have created so many fond memories over the years!
