The Pack Horse

"Real ales and weekly quiz nights help this traditional stone pub to remain a true village local. Hearty pub dishes come with a refined edge and the Manchester (Scotch) Egg has become something of a signature. Characterful open fires mix with warm, contemporary décor, and it’s run by a friendly team." - Michelin Inspector

This was a fab trip to Hayfield. We booked in for Sunday dinner with our 2 year old dog. We felt welcome, atmosphere is warm and inviting. The food was absolutely delicious, we had scallops, trout, lamb as a main and 2 desserts and everything was fab. No complaints. The gravy in particular that came with the lamb was 10/10. Would recommend the old fashioned if you like cocktails. Service was attentive, non intrusive, warm and no complaints here either. If I was to be really picky I’d caution that the toilets are a shared space. So there are separate toilets for men and women with a communal sink to wash hands. This doesn’t bother me but I know a couple of friends and family members who would be put off. For 7 dishes (1 snack, 2 starters, main, desserts) and a drink each (cocktail and beer) it came to approximately £130 - so while expensive we loved it and would recommend it.

Absolutely exceptional in every way. We decided to try the lamb kofta, leeks and then the cote de boeuf. The tastes were so good. Highly recommend the cote de boeuf as a treat. I have lived fairly local to this pub for a number of years and heard great reviews. I just wish I had visited before now. Top class Gastropub food.

Loved everything about this place. Usually when you go to a restaurant or a pub which has been in Michelin guide it's difficult to get in as walk-ins. This pub is different as it has a separate area for walk-ins and they serve limited food to them as well. So if you have spontaneously decided to go, don't hesitate. The staff is very friendly and efficient. Service is fast and appropriate. Once there do try Manchester eggs, white bait fishes and chips. The food is exquisite and something which you miss when you are in city centre. The vibe is this place is chill and relaxing.

Absolutely stunning food and staff... At the end they apologised for the slow service as they where short staffed, we hadn't even noticed there where any issues, which shows how good their team is.

Four of us had a delicious Sunday lunch. Squid for starters was the best I've had. The service was friendly and efficient, thank you. The most impressive thing for me as someone with dietary problems was how professional and caring they were by having printed a separate menu with everything I could eat on it! Rather than having to go backwards and forwards with kitchen staff about what I could and couldn't eat (awkward for them in service), this had been thought through and attended to beforehand. Amazing!! Will be back and bring others too.

Thankfully my friend who I went with insisted in that we visited here. I didn't do any research or check the menu. Wow wow wow. Totally amazed at the excellence of the full experience. Stunning and quaint inside, met with homely and warming service by everyone. To then be presented with beautiful and exemplary food really surpassed expectations. I'm still thinking about some of the flavours and quality of the food.

Now then. This was really really really good. Like absolutely no word of a lie brilliant. I'm going to say it was my best experience of hospitality and food in 2021. I read the review in the Times and thought hey I've family up at Christmas let's give it a go. Booked a table for 10 and rolled up in that fab bit of time post Christmas and pre new year. We went for a walk and rocked up a bit early, and the table was all ready for us and gave us time to have some pre dinner cocktails and injest the menu. I had a whisky sour and a Manchester egg to get the juices working, and my goodness, we all loved it. Scallops and beef followed. Well-timed and attentive staff made the meal flow with a laid-back form of professional friendliness that made me so very happy. The children and the dog loved it as much as the adults. We'll done to all the crew here who are really delivering a winner in Hayfield. It's better than you even think it might be. Not pretentious or too serious. It's bloody perfection. ***August 25 update ** guess what? It is still just as good and fantastic staff and food some two years later. The Baron Bigod cheese on maple bread was so good I couldn't even take a picture of it before it was gone. Had to buy the cookbook this time too and support this fantatsic place.

Get yourselves here immediately! Came here to celebrate a birthday and it's now #1 on my list of favourite dining experiences. It's a really cosy, friendly and atmospheric pub. The staff were attentive and just genuinely really lovely. The food was exceptional and everything blew our minds. Really good list of booze too - we fully dipped our bread with everything, but it doesn't have to be a dear do. We honestly cannot wait to return, we've already told our friends and family!!

Yelp
The food here is good (I had a great lunch here a couple of years ago) but overall I left slightly underwhelmed by the flavours in the Sunday Roast - the venison was beautifully cooked but perhaps a little underseasoned. When the large bill came we felt it didn't quite have the wow factor we'd expect at that price point. I think I'd try again but not on a Sunday. At the moment, the much less lauded Hare & Hounds in Mill Brow I think is doing at least as good a job at a slightly lower price.

Yelp
Upon finding ourselves at a loose end one Bank Holiday lunch time we decided to try the Pack Horse in Hayfield, which had been recommended by a friend. The traditional open fire type pub had been transformed with a very modern and quirky decor, which in my opinion worked. Very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with attentive (but not overly so) staff. I opted for the chicken liver terrine and marmalade jelly which was well thought out and tasty. I followed this with the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding (had to be done really!). The meat was cooked well and was accompanied by a wide variety of well cooked vegetables. Home-made onion gravy and fiery horseradish cream set it off nicely. Finished the meal off with STP, which was lovely and came with very nice ice cream. My companion opted for the deep-fried mushrooms, which they thought were nice and came with a spicy sweet sauce that complimented it well. Their main of beef hot pot and dumplings was well received (maybe a little too piping hot to eat) but the dumplings were a bit dry, making them hard to eat. They finished their meal with Eton mess which was very nice and came with a variety of fresh fruits. The only small gripe was that the dishes felt a little over worked with garnishes and "food art", as if they were trying a bit too hard to impress, when the food did the talking very nicely for them without it, in my opinion. All in all very nice food and at 55 GBP including 2 drinks was very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend and will be re-visiting again.

Yelp
Been to The Pack Horse in Hayfield a few times now. Its a country pub with a modern twist. Great inside, sofa's, tables to choose from. It feels like a city centre bar but your out in the country. Food is 1st class and I've always found the staff very good. Well worth a visit for a drink or dinner.

Yelp
Good pub food in a comfortable location. It was great to have the fire going on a cold March night when we were there for a get together of 2nd and third cousins! The food was very good, and plated in a stylish, almost gourmet sort of way that was a step above standard pub fare. There were some classier items on the menu as well, like artisan bread and olive starters and some fancy desserts. We were in on a Monday, so it was kind of quiet, but reports from locals say this place keeps busy.
