"Set near the green in a pretty village, is this smart modern pub named after the 15C flint bridge which spans the river. Understated modern dishes have subtle yet effective flavour combinations and use the best local ingredients. Ultra-stylish bedrooms have plush furnishings and roll-top baths." - Michelin Inspector

I am not from this town but this place got recommended to me and I know why. Stunning location, beautiful pub inside and outside. I ate outside as was sunny. The staff were lovely and attentive but the best part was the food. Was 11/10, so tasty, everything was cooked to perfection, wish I could come back sooner and wasn’t 3 hours away but if I’m ever driving through again I will make the stop. Highly recommended

We had an initial problem with our room, but this was effectively and courteously dealt with by the manager and was more than made up for by the excellent food and service we received. The newly extended restaurant is beautiful, with a wonderful outlook over the village green, and all the food we had was both delicious and attractively presented. However, it is always the staff who really make any place work and we can honestly say that everyone we met (including the singing chef!) were lovely, so thank you all for making our stay so enjoyable.

Haven't stayed, so can't comment on rooms. Very homely pub with fantastic food and drink. Part of the Chestnut Group. Newly extended dining area and bar area updated. Decent sized beer garden, Easily accessible from Newmarket 5-10 mins drive. Will be going back.

We are a party of 6 and stayed for horseracing, we love this hotel, the rooms are all lovely, every member of staff is a credit to your hotel, they are all friendly and accommodating. We had a meal at the hotel on the Saturday evening and the food was amazing, we would like to give a special mention to Lauren our waitress who was very helpful and friendly.

Booked dinner, bed and breakfast for my partner's birthday and had a wonderful stay. Great meal and a comfortable night before the finest cooked breakfast I've ever had (top quality ingredients treated with love). Service was good and friendly though they did appear a bit under-staffed and under pressure during dinner service.

We stayed overnight in Stour which was a lovely comfortable room with no problems. We ate in the impressive new restaurant extension - we both enjoyed everything we had including the Ease Up IPA. Breakfast was also excellent although the waiter seemed flustered/rushed and we didn't get exactly what we ordered (and a couple on a nearby table seemed to have a similar experience) and the service was slightly below normal standards. I checked out of the hotel with the same waiter who was professional and calm, so perhaps just a temporary blip. Finally, your loyalty scheme continues to cause problems - I can't easily see my points/rewards and all Chestnut staff seem similarly frustrated by the process.

For a restaurant recommended by the Michelin Guide, I believe the quality of service and food was a letdown, especially at that price point. The steak was not trimmed and tidied at all—it still had nerves left in, which were obviously chewy. The chips were greasy, and the salad did not come with any dressing whatsoever, which is a bit depressing, as who would want to eat chopped-up cabbage with a 45-day dry-aged rump steak? The burrata pesto starter was absolutely wonderful, light and summery, and the pesto was absolutely beautiful; however, the chicken croquette could have been a bit more balanced - it was slightly dry on the inside for a croqueta, and the black garlic sauce was a bit too salty. The lamb rump main was absolutely beautiful as well; however, the salsa verde lacked a bit of a kick.

We were running quite late for our booking, called the restaurant and when we finally arrived they were so welcoming and kind. Everything is 5 star at The Packhorse. I can never fault the place or the people.
