The Painted Lady

Must be the best restaurant in the Willamette Valley. Each dish was close to perfection - from the amuse bouche to the dessert. There was no ala a carte, only the tasting menu option, much like many Michelin restaurants in Paris. I'd happily return.

My partner and I had dinner here to celebrate our wedding anniversary on July 12. There were 10 courses, not including the anniversary cake. Everything was delicious. I heard the miso custard has been a popular dish and yes, that WAS really good, but the canapes was just as good. I was amazed how crispy the mushroom was. I have a big appetite but by the time they brought the dessert, I was stuffed. I just took a bite and my partner finished the rest. It took us 2 hours to eat everything, but we probably should have slowed down. I didn't take a picture of it, but they had decaf. Towards the end, I saw a fly, which was the only negative feedback on the Painted Lady.

Drove down to Newberg from Seattle just to eat at The Painted Lady—and the 4-hour trip was totally worth it. From the moment we walked in, our server made us feel super taken care of and explained each dish and wine pairing really well. We had about 9 or 10 courses, and everything tasted amazing. My favorite was the Ube Genoise—every bite was magical, and I honestly could’ve had three more. They were great about our dietary restrictions too—I had the vegetarian menu and loved how thoughtful and creative each dish was. The Miso custard and agnolotti with the sourdough bread were so good. They even brought out a chocolate cake for us to take home, to celebrate my spouse’s birthday, which was such a sweet touch. Definitely a great spot for a special occasion or just a really nice dinner.

My wife and I visited the Willamette Valley for our anniversary, and this place made our trip! Each course was plated beautifully, absolutely delicious, and most importantly with an omasake type presentation was just the right amount of food! The service was excellent, and they even brought us a delicious complimentary cake at the end to celebrate our anniversary! We have added The Painted Lady to our list of places to go whenever we're in Oregon, and it's definitely worth the trip from Portland!

I was disappointed by this place as a whole. To be fair to them, their service was amazing- no complaints about their waitstaff. We did not do a wine pairing because we had been tasting all day and the pours were very generous at other tables- but it would’ve been a great option if we weren’t already a bit wined out. On the negative, the food. The portions were reasonable- we were full at the end- but the food itself was very, very underwhelming. In particular, the albacore loin was extremely fishy. We could smell it as it was coming to the table. You can’t serve something that is clearly that old/not fresh at this price tag. Was unable to eat it. Everything else was just ok. I feel like they tried to over complicate things to make them appear more high end rather than actually focusing on ingredients and flavors. Would unfortunately not recommend this place. Better food for 1/3 the price elsewhere.

My wife and I visited for our honeymoon and while the service was pleasant, the food was completely underwhelming in almost every way. It’s a tasting menu, so smaller, more curated dishes are to be expected–but every course was either very under seasoned, or just…boring. The salmon was not fresh at all and I could smell the fishy-ness as they brought it out from the kitchen. It was a blah course overall. The pasta and romesco sauce were devoid of any salt whatsoever, and the accompanying pork belly (2 bacon bits sized pieces mind you) were dry and hard. The steak course was fine, but that’s a low bar as it’s not hard to cook a good quality steak. The dessert course seemed like they didn’t know what exactly they wanted to do and threw a few things together which was a rubbery mess overall. The atmosphere was also…something. But I’ll leave that up to personal preference and ultimately isn’t why we chose this option for our honeymoon. The Painted Lady simply does not live up to the experience one would expect to have when spending $460 on dinner. This may seem as a harsh review, but we wish we would’ve known better before coming and made other plans. We’ve visiting numerous other fine dining establishments (including tasting menu dinners) while spending less $$ and having 10x the experience in every way possible.

We went to celebrate an anniversary and it was one of the best dining experiences I've had and the best in Portland by far. We had the full 8 course tasting menu. Service was very friendly and attentive and the food was incredible. Tons of really complex dishes both in flavor and texture. I felt like I was slipping closer and closer to unconscious bliss with every bite. Food coma! The dining area is cozy and candle lit. Will definitely be back the next time we're in Portland!

Hands down the most amazing food experience I have ever taken part in. Went there for our 24th anniversary and it was simply magical. There was not 1 thing I didn't just drool all over. Those tastes I tasted defy explanation. And with the wine pairing, it just made the evening perfect. This is a true hidden gem.

We had another fabulous dining experience on 7/5. We had the same waitress as the last visit and even sat at the exact same table. Every course was delicious from beginning to end and once again the wine pairings did not disappoint- including the generous pours once again. Their service is always impeccable and the food is so creative, thoughtful and tasty. We will definitely be back again! Thank you for a fabulous night!!!

We dined here last night and definitely enjoyed it, but didn't quite feel the value was there for the money. First, the setting: a very charming Victorian-era house that provides a warm backdrop to the meal (don't mind the security cameras everywhere). The service was exceptional; our waiter explained each course and each wine pairing in detail and gave his own personal takes on the wines. The food was mostly very good. Some things lacked flavor or were in such a tiny amount that you couldn't take them seriously: an example was the tiny duck egg yolk jellies on top of a fried waffle thingy. Were you really supposed to taste the duck egg? Our favorite dish, by far, was the miso soup. The canapé with fried mushrooms was wonderful. The beef was ok, tasty, but had to be sawed through. I really liked the pasta dish. The smoked trout and celery tasted like nothing but celery, and the strawberry shortcake just didn't come together for me or pack much flavor punch. The accompanying charcoal ice cream was better. Overall, I'm glad we had this experience, but I have paid less for bolder and more balanced flavor combinations at other restaurants. Loved the setting and waitstaff, though!

This restaurant is set in an old two-story house, which looks very cute and old-fashioned, like something out of a fairy tale. The house is very well taken care of, with a cozy and charming interior featuring comfy chairs. The waiters are impeccably dressed and highly professional. We enjoyed an 8-course meal with preselected seasonal dishes, each accompanied by a predefined selection of wines, some of which were locally made in the nearby town of Dundee. The waiter explained each dish, clearly proud of what they were serving. The portions were small, as you would expect from such a place, but each one was delicious. Every meal was masterfully crafted and beautifully plated. My favorite was the Miso Custard with Dungeness crab, which had an excellent flavor and texture. Overall, I loved the experience, though I found it a bit overpriced.

Amazing meal in Salem! The service was perfect, and they were so accommodating with my dietary preferences. Every bite was delicious. It's ideal for a special occasion meal or even a date night- we saw plenty dates and a group of 4 just catching up. 10/10!

In my past experiences, American tasting menus are hit or miss - a good number of them just charge a lot because they use fancy ingredients, yet fail to mesh together a creative and delicious masterpiece. For $130/person + $95/wine pairing (which can be shared), excluding tax and tip (no tax in OR phew), this place strikes a good balance between value and quality. It is not the best tasting menu I have had, but I loved their creative take on the various courses. My friends and I went here on August 19, right before their summer vacation, and we booked the reservation a month in advance (highly recommended). It was originally 3 people but a 4th person FOMOed and wanted in, and they happily accommodated and modified our reservation the day of. We celebrated a job promotion, which they graciously congratulated, and this fine detail I did not even put in the reservation - I just mentioned it in passing in a quick phone call when they called me to confirm the reservation a week prior. Attention to details like these make a 5 star experience - in the end, they gave us a peanut butter crunch cake (complimentary) as an additional dessert course, leaving us happy and stuffed for our journey onwards to Portland. For the specific dishes: Canapes - oyster mushroom calamari - lightly fried with the aioli very fragrant Northwest poke - super fresh tuna, with a wasabi flavor that is prominent yet not overpowering the other ingredients Miso custard - a substantial starter, somewhat heavy, with generous amounts of crab meat. Pickled red onion makes a nice contrast with the creamy custard within Columbia River king salmon - cooked medium, wrapped in zucchini for a nice additional texture. Corn puree adds some sweetness to a savory dish Cavatelli pasta - surprisingly small in quantity, with morel mushrooms the looks of truffle. Lamb pancetta paired extremely well with the wine that went along with it (2017 Dundee Hills, OR Pinot Noir from Anderson). This course also had bread with leek powder and butter, fairly standard but delicious Oregon Wagyu New York steak - very tender, way better cut than a standard nice cut from a steakhouse. Cascadia Creamery sleeping beauty - cheese course, makes the wine pairing super worthwhile. Somewhat dessert, or a segue per se. This course is probably named after me because I am about to get a food coma (jk) White chocolate and strawberry bombe - a great "not too sweet" dessert that is very fruity. Outside shell is room temperature and inside is a bit chilled. Nice play on temperature Peanut butter crunch cake (additional course) - a bit on the sweeter side, but I love the unpredictable crunch texture scattered around the cake. Peanut butter taste is more subtle, with a more forward chocolate flavor Mignardises - pineapple ginger gel candy, truffle, caramel, and handmade oreos. This course was a bit weak compared to the other courses (maybe I was too full so I couldn't appreciate it as much) but it felt a little standard and did not strike the awesomeness of the other courses. Service is excellent. Water refills are every course (fairly frequent), and they were patient in explaining each wine despite getting only 1 wine pairing for our table of 4, and the cadence of each course is good and paced according to the party. For example, the solo diner finished 45 minutes before us, while we took 2.5 hrs total and that was okay. They do tack on a 20% gratuity, but I definitely felt they fully deserved this service charge and maybe even more!

Date: 3/24/23 * Food: 3/5 * Ambiance: 2/5 * Service: 4/5 * Management: 4/5 TL;DR: It's Guy Savoy, but if Guy Savoy was in Oregon. In other words, ostentatious but without the stars needed to successfully pull off such pretense. What purports to be fine dining of an elite class instead comes across as a decently disguised chain restaurant eternally hoping to sell itself to the masses as something more. I went to Newberg to eat at this restaurant. After all, it has four Forbes stars and four AAA diamonds. Their Instagram is impeccable, their menu inspired. I mounted the Victorian house's wobbly stairs that evening with knees equally wobbly from the thrill that comes before engaging in a truly magnificent dining experience. When I walked back down those same stairs almost three hours later, the only thing wobbling was my gut. I will say this: The food is pretty. But not as pretty as one might believe based solely upon the restaurant's Instagram content; any aesthetic value it has results from a vain attempt to "paint" with ingredients. Each "composed" dish is so artistically deconstructed that it has to be subsequently re-composed, bite by bite, by the diner if there is to be any hope of its flavor attaining the chef's original intent. Several courses were borderline flavorless; a verdant green swoosh across the plate of my seafood course made me question whether my taste buds were operating it was so bland. The bread, while warm, somehow seemed stale. And anything crispy (of which there was a fair amount; nearly half of the courses included a fried element) tasted...well...like fryer oil. Credit must go where it is due, however. The coconut cake and pineapple sorbet dessert was yummy, as was a certain parsnip puree. The miso custard was creative, as were the rest of the courses...but what they boasted in originality, they gravely lacked in seasoning. Salt, sweetness, spice, and sourness were noticeably absent in every course, making for a one-note dining experience. The mignardises were just gross. My biggest "beef", so to speak, was with the so-called wagyu, which, as we overheard our waiter explaining to another table, was not wagyu at all but a locally raised knockoff variety. While we appreciated the waiter's honesty, we couldn't help but feel as if The Painted Lady was attempting a culinary sleight of hand, marketing perfectly delicious local beef as coveted Japanese wagyu. Should it have simply been listed as premium locally raised beef, it would have been celebrated rather than scorned. A quick note on ambiance: If you're going to call yourself fine dining, then please, for the love of brie, put a cloth on your table! I can forgive unnecessarily large and awkward-looking chargers, but the clatter of silverware against a naked table between courses is a far greater sin. Don't get me started on the visually disruptive placement of speakers and heat vents amid awkward attempts at decor or the haphazardly folded napkin squares. The electro/country music blend was also a head-scratcher. The management gave us an extra dessert in honor of our honeymoon (never mind that it was made with chocolate so bitter and peanut butter so oily it turned both of our stomachs) as well as copy of the evening's menu with a special message from the chef as a keepsake. However, the service was sporadic at best---our waiter was with us for several courses, then disappeared and was replaced before returning toward the end of the evening. While generally pleasant, our waiter was also disappointingly condescending when we asked for two nonalcoholic, uncarbonated drinks. He promised us that he would whip up two "fruity drinks", as if we were toddlers in search of sippy cups. The drinks he came up with (do they have a bartender, or is the waitstaff just expected to mix drinks?) tasted like canned juice with a bit of egg white whipped in. It was sour, funky, and overall disappointing. Just like the rest of the night.

What a way to experience the wine region in Newberg. If you like eating but hate trying to decide what to order for FOMO, then make a reservation here and leave your brain in the car. The waiter recommended not knowing the menu in advance and I applaud him for that. It became fun to guess based on the silverware presented at each course. Yes, this place is a multi-course extravaganza where you eat what they make. Kinda like being a child, but instead of beef-a-roni, dry pot roast, and canned peas, it's elegant food porn bliss that tastes even better than it looks. The menu changes regularly and they only keep their soup on the menu all the time, so I won't do a disservice and review each dish. But I will say we absolutely loved every course. You can get a wine pairing (we only did 1 and shared) as well and they explain each wine and where it comes from. If you want to feel like you're royalty, then definitely add The Painted Lady to your list of places to indulge. The food and experience here was worth every penny.

Let me mention a few items. First, the menu is a chef's tasting, hence the portions are small, but there are many dishes from appetizers through main courses and desert...and the drinks from the full bar are also good. Second, yes the price is relatively high, but the ingredients are fresh and local. After covid, even other locally great restaurants ( Jory's, Tina's, Thistle, etc) have dealt with much higher ingredient costs and difficulty finding help. But things are improving, it just might take a bit to get to the consistent quality levels we are accustomed prior to March 2020. Well enough of contexts. Had a reservation last night and each serving was excellent. The ingredients were exceptional, the quality high. Each course was if the correct temperature, and the seasoning was perfect. The service was also great, we had two servers constantly attentive to our needs and knowledgeable about each serving. The setting of course is unique, it's a Victorian styled home...hence the "Painted" Lady name. It's not like Jorys which is a part of the resort, nor Tina's. It's a quaint home turned into a restaurant, and it's decorated conservatively, but tasteful and comfortable. So if you'd like a very unique experience, after all this isn't NYC, Brooklyn, Chicago, San Francisco, etc, try this excellent experience at least once. You may discover something quite unique and exceptional. As for me, I'm planning my next reservation.

We came here on a Saturday night for a 7 course tasting. The restaurant itself is beautiful with nice ambience although other guests were quite loud and made for less of an intimate seating for some diners (about 6-7 tables total) but their service was stellar. I wish we had been more impressed with the tasting menu since we had been wanting to come here for quite some time. There were a few dishes that stood out such as the truffle gnocchi but otherwise unfortunately everything was mediocre (not what is expected from a fine dining restaurant) but the price point is quite low for a typical fine dining 7 course meal (115 a head). If you're looking for a local tasting menu I would recommend Le pigeon (higher price point but beautifully and with every note to detail it is chef curated) For example: one of our courses was a very simple salmon, for another course (the main) my tuna steak was far too over cooked and dry, and another course was a cheese tasting (4 slices of cheese with some garnish)

We had a lovely evening in this wine country gem. Very attentive service and great food and wine. Tasting menu was 7 courses which was a lot of food and so make sure you arrive with an empty stomach! Watch out for the 'foodies' constantly taking photos of each course and posting online.

Sublime. Perfection. Flawless. For those who enjoy, thrive upon, and recognize exceptional culinary talent, seamless, anticipatory table service, and absolute non-pretentious comfort, have a meal at The Painted Lady. Not stuffy, yet classy. Not overdone, but brilliant, elaborate plates. The most satisfying and delicious restaurant experience I've had in years--especially since the dark days of industry losses. We loved it.

The Painted Lady exceeded my expectations. The chef was able to accommodate a severe allergy in my party - be sure to note this upfront and you may get a couple of calls to discuss the issue prior to your visit. The restaurant itself is cozy but it wasn't cramped and only had five tables on the ground floor (at least when I visited). We dressed casually but most groups were more formal and the waitstaff all donned black suits. We appreciated the nice presentation of dishes and the informative service. Overall impressed with the caliber of dining here!

My wife and I are from the Bay Area so we are blessed with some solid dining choices back home and we didn't know what to expect as we traveled in the Willamette area mainly hitting wineries and small family run producers. The Painted Lady was highly rated and seemingly like a "special occasion" dining locale so we opted for a Saturday night reservation and we were nicely surprised and happy we chose to have dinner here. They do a fixed 8-course for $115+ / each and it was a wide range of cooking styles and foods. They started with some nice amuse bouche including a salmon mouse and some other lovely canapés, then we had a curried squash w pressed persimmon which was nicely done, the Asian style Dashi rich soup dish was next and one of the highlights, next was a slow roasted salmon w a nice mustard seed dollop on the top was followed by a chestnut and cheese tortellini dish was next - which I hoped it had more chestnut flavor... Next we had a Buffalo NY cut steak - which was nicely roasted but one slice of mine was a little tough to cut and chew...sadly. This was followed by a small sheep's milk cheese plate and a cinnamon space cake which was dry and kinda meh. Last we had a dish of interesting candies and a hazelnut cake which was great overall. The wine list was quite pricey and they charge $35 corkage, and the tasting menu pairing was $90 so we opted for a few glasses of their wine-by-the-glass which was surprisingly limited in options. They clearly want to have guests do the pairing (bringing each meal to over $200/each) or sell one of their many greater than $150/bottle options,...most upwards to $250+ - $4,000 ! The wine list was a bit highly marked up which was surprising and disappointing.... Overall a tasty meal, lighter than our meal at Joel Palmer's the night before and in general solid service and nice treatment ! Worth seeking out. Perhaps bring your own special bottle if the math works out !

My wife and I went to The Painted Lady for our wedding anniversary while in town doing some wine tastings in the area. This restaurant came highly recommended from some friends that know the area better than we do. The service and ambiance made for a very enjoyable experience. Our server was fantastic and checked in often to ensure we had everything we needed. We did the seasonal tasting menu, catered to our pescatarian diets. To be honest, this dinner came at the end of a long day of wine tasting so I don't remember each individual course. I do remember having a great time and have the pictures of the food to prove it. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and the tasting menu experience. It is not inexpensive but seems to be on par with other tasting menus I have done in the area.

We saved this place for a special occasion (milestone birthday) and were so glad we did. From beginning to end, the experience was delightful. Each course was delicious and paced just right. The venue was elegant but comfortable, and service was attentive without being overbearing. Even the restroom was fun, with a plant-filled bathtub for decoration. Nice touches throughout. We did skip the wine pairing as it seemed a little too pricey for us. It may have been a fair price for seven pairings, but that's more than we can drink with pleasure. If there had been a mini-version of the pairing, that might have been of interest. Other than that, all thumbs up!

This was one of the best culinary experiences of my life! I always doubt restaurants because I am a home chef but this was a wonderful experience. The food was awesome and I highly recommend the wine pairing with dinner! The staff catered to our every need and sent us home with a small birthday gift! This is a must!

Note to Painted Lady: Get over yourself. Lots of attitude and pretension but when you get down to it, the food is sort of average. It's got all the markings of a great place but at the end of the day you have to serve really good food if you're going to charge those kind of prices. I hate to say it because it's so dang cute and the vibe near perfect, but they just don't deliver. I won't pile on by mentioning the pungent odor of cat urine in the stairwell. We can talk about that later. As they say out in cow country, big hat, no cattle.

Don't go to The Painted Lady hungry because the food here is too fancy for its own good. I had heard such great things about The Painted Lady. The food. The atmosphere. The service. I was totally disappointed. The atmosphere was fine. It was basically a house that was turned into a restaurant. It was quaint as I anticipated. The food was very fancy and delicious, but this tasting menu should've had 10-12 courses with the bite size morsels that came out. My friends and I had to look for a McDonald's or something to actually have dinner.

Wow! Dining at The Painted Lady was so exquisite that words escape me. I've dined at hundreds of restaurants and this was by far the most epic experience I have ever had. For a set price, you receive the chef's tasting menu which varies seasonally and includes 10 courses - each of them thrilling and unique. The staff was incredible and attentive. They bring out each dish at a perfect pace (it took us about 2 hours to complete our meal). They spend a small time describing the details of each meal in between courses. I literally felt like a princess eating here. Each bite of food was a flavor explosion unlike anything I've ever tasted. I highly recommend celebrating any special occasion here. I went for my birthday and I was even given a special desert to take home.

I would not really call this a place to go just for a meal. But if you are looking for a dining experience, then this is the place! We were a group of eleven and were seated in an upstairs private dining room. The staff was super attentive, without being overbearing. Each course was described in detail as it was presented (not just served, but presented!). Each presentation was beautifully arranged, with enough in each portion to enjoy, without feeling overstuffed at the end of the three-hour experience. Two of our group had some dietary issues that were not provided to the restaurant when the reservations were made, but the staff made quick and beautiful substitutions "on the fly" and did not miss a beat. Dinner at the Painted Lady is not cheap, but at $80 a person, for the five course tasting menu, was not only fairly priced for what was received, but actually very reasonable when compared to our group's dinner the precious evening at El Gaucho, with their $65 steaks, plus appetizer, plus sides, plus dessert.

Loved our experience at The Painted Lady! Easily could be a Michelin Rated Restaurant. The service was fantastic and I loved the cozy atmosphere. Our server was very thorough and kind. We enjoyed all of the courses and it was well timed and spaced out. We opted for the wine pairings with dinner as well and that was incredible. It's a mix of some local wines and some international wines. They also have cocktails and wines by the glass and bottle. I would highly recommend the experience we will definitely be back!

Truly amazing night - excellent 8 course meal. Staff and servers were awesome! Favorite course was the soup, followed by the Risotto followed by the caramel candy dessert;)

Another spectacular meal here. I have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. The service is exceptional and everyone is incredibly knowledgeable about the food and wine. I was really shocked when I read a negative review of this restaurant. Make no mistake, this place is not cheap and I don't think anyone leaves with a doggy bag. It is an 8-course "tasting" menu. Come here if you want a culinary experience to take you places you don't normally visit. Extraordinary artistry of local ingredients served to showcase a chef's vision. I may not walk out with my belt loosened, but I do leave satiated and inspired. If you're a "foodie" this is a must stop.

10 stars! I was a very lucky birthday girl indeed to celebrate at The Painted Lady, it exceeded all expectations. If you've ever been to Chef Thomas Keller's place, the French Laundry in Napa Valley, California, dare I say The Painted Lady might be a tad better? No? OK, then equal to at least. And no waiting 3 damn months for reservations! I cannot add much more to what other Yelpers have said, from the highest level of impeccable service, to not simply being a meal but a dining experience, The Painted Lady is all that and more. If you enjoy (not stuffy) formality and being treated like you are the only people in the dining room, save your money and make reservations as soon as you can. If you opt for the Chef's Nine Course Tasting Menu ($110 each) with 7 wine pairings ($75 each), plus 25% tip, expect to put out about half your monthly rent. Seriously. Seriously worth it. I honestly cannot remember every wine we had but we started with canapés and French champagne. After which was brought out a Hearts of Palm and Truffle Salad: fresh shaved Hawaiian hearts of palm, Burgundy truffles, avocado, pickled Mustard, and extra virgin olive oil. My favorite taste of the evening came next: Miso Custard: Dungeness crab, pickled red onion, edamame, sesame powder, and Dashi in a hand made ceramic bowl. It was exquisite. From there we had Potato Gnocchi, then a Cassoulet of chicken sausage, pork belly, duck confit, flageolet beans, salsa verde, with citrus crumble. Next, a slow-roasted salmon, followed by Beef 2 Ways: 28 day dry aged New York, braised short ribs, winter squash terrine, golden raisin puree, topped with a pumpkin seed vinaigrette. The meal was finished with four different desserts and Mignardises (small sweets served after dessert). The Painted Lady is a beautiful and completely restored Victorian House in an fairly run down neighborhood in Newburg, of all places, just a few blocks from downtown main street. This is a special treat to be experienced and savored at least once. Thankfully, I have another birthday next year too!

Local gem. Service and location is great. The place is very small and I can see why it is difficult to get a reservation. We were lucky enough to make reservation for their experimental night where they try new recipes and dishes. We opted for the wine pairing. I would say that you have to have an open mind if you are going to do the experimental menu. Everything was great! Service was amazing, well oiled machine. I hope they decide to add the Sole Fish dish to their permanent menu. Amazing!

We two had the nine-course tasting menu with wine pairing. SERVICE: 5.0. Very disciplined staff who seem to communicate continuously in order to ensure each customer has a great experience. We arrived at 6pm; most of the members of the staff we encountered seemed strangely nervous, but that wore off as the courses progressed. The servers were very knowledgeable about the food and wine. "Mark" (sommelier) in particular was impressive as regards his deep knowledge of food and wine sources from European regions, such as being able to compare black truffles from the Istria Peninsula in Croatia with those that were being served (from Perpignon, France). When returning from the restroom, one would often find that one's napkin had been nicely folded. When we first arrived we ordered a glass of wine before starting our meal. The first course and paired wine were served before we were able to finish that first glass. Noticing our dilemma, Mark approached and asked us to let him know when we were ready to start dining, so that he could have a FRESH first course served, in order to ensure it was warm when we ate. We appreciated this, as the taste of that course was definitely enhanced by being warm. AMBIANCE: 5.0. Pleasant. Voices of those around us did not disturb our conversation. The candle on the table was placed in a nice holder of thick glass that perfectly diffused the brightness of the flame. TIP: There are two restrooms at the top of the stairs. Follow the advice of the server who showed me the way, and take the extra step to the innermost restroom. Yes, even the restrooms are very pleasant. FOOD: 5.0. It was all very good -- except the dessert. A strip of too-sweet chocolate with bits of fruit. WINE: 5.0. It was all very good, as was the pairing. The paired wine with the 9 course meal equals about 2 glasses. In addition, we each had a glass of wine before dining. This left us feeling a bit too happy. TIP: Either don't order extra wine, or (if there are two of you), share one course of the paired wines.

We visited this past weekend to celebrate our 10th anniversary and it was a wonderful food & wine experience. Come prepared for a well-paced meal and I strongly suggest the wine pairings. The staff did an excellent job of explaining the details of each dish, and why the different wines paired so well. The standout dishes of the evening for us were the Grass Fed Oregon Bison, which was cooked to perfection, Aleppo Pepper Tagliatelle, and Miso Custard.

Really top notch fine dining experience. I made reservations thru Open Table about 6 weeks in advance for our 9 year anniversary on a Wednesday. It's a short walk from our house so we wandered over and arrived right at 5. It is in a pretty Victorian home. Our server, Matthew who is also the sommelier was fabulous. The service in general was excellent and seamless. We had the tasting menu- it was $85/pp and took a perfect 2 hours. The star for me was the corn and shrimp bisque- but everything was great. Overall it was a lovely experience and we will be back for another special occasion.

Incredible dining experience! This should be a Michelin rated restaurant. Their attention to detail and safety during the Pandemic was second to none. The staff's knowledge of the food and wine was incredibly helpful and it enhanced the experience--even though the food didn't need it!

I came here last Friday night and it did not disappoint!!! We had late reservations at 9... and happened to be the last ones seated for the evening. All of the tables were full when we showed but as the night went on, the restaurant slowly cleared out. My hubby tried the full tasting menu and I had the vegetarian. It was a solid nine courses. I am soooo bummed that I didn't take photos of every course.... But I was really in the moment that I guess I forgot. We also were not given a menu so I don't have a photo to reference with what we had that evening. They like to surprise you with each course and I understand the courses change due to what foods are in season so there are no promises what you will be served. Everything for food was impeccable. Only one negative comment: My husband said his chicken was REALLY dry. But other then that little complaint, everything else was so great! presentation was top notch, service was great and SUPER friendly, atmosphere was very romantic, true fine dining and the food was so fresh and savory! My absolute favorite part was the end of the night. We were naturally the last diners there and we asked to see the kitchen. Our waiter gave us the full tour. We saw the 2 kitchens, bar area and cellar which was so fun to see in the house setting!! They are also working on setting up the back patio for cocktails to enjoy before or after your meal. Comparable to The French Laundry at a fraction of the price. Highly recommended for a romantic dinner for anyone in the area!!!

This is our 2nd experience (with the 1st being 8 years ago) at this cozy and refined restaurant. While the portions are small, the taste and creativity is not. The experience was further enhanced by the quality of the team and their undivided attention to customers. I would rate this experience as good if not better than many of the Michelin rated restaurants we have enjoyed. I would recommend the wine pairing with dinner. Enjoy!

I don't even know what you are doing with your life if you haven't spent an evening at The Painted Lady. From the greeting at the front door thru every course and wine pairing, our experience was jovial, inclusive and DELICIOUS! The decor and music selection rounded out our experience. None of the experience would have been possible without the incredible staff who coordinated so flawlessly with each other they could have been dancing. Bravo!!! We had an evening to remember. Thank you!!

This place is a must for special occasions! My husband surprised me with reservations for our 1yr anniversary! We had been here for a wine dinner upstairs about 3 yrs ago, but never did the full dining experience. The lady is definitely swanky, pretty, and fancy! A beautiful old Victorian home, decked out with very dim lighting, candles and servers galore! Not one detail is missed here. (They even personally walk you to the restroom) We did the tasting menu and ordered a bottle of wine. The sommelier knows his wine! We could not decide so he asked us what region, type of wine we like. He came back with a great recommendation, small case production wine, that really hit the spot! Holiday Hill 2010 Pinot Noir The first dish came out right away. Then the next, and the next, and in between dishes, they brought a new set of silverware to us each time. The main course was a 28 day aged steak, it was the only dish that hit the mark for us. It was a bit on the tough side. But all other dishes, including the crab bisque was impeccable! The service was amazing, the food insanely good, and the night just perfect. An experience you must try at least once in your in your life! Be prepared to be wowed!

Have to say that the tasting menu and wine match were wonderful. We were served by the Sommelier and he is excellent. I am not a Barolo fan but cannot hold that against him. I am certain that he would substitute something but it was my fault for not reading the menu. Very beautiful experience.

This place was really good. The waiter was very knowledgeable when it came to wine. The food was very good with eight courses. I will warn you it is quite time consuming. But the chef did an amazing job at bringing out the flavor in the most simple dishes. We were able to make same-day appointments and they were accommodating to Tree nut allergies and soy allergies. It is rather small and the atmosphere is kind of awkward to be quite honest. The most awkward of them all are the waiters and waitresses. They seem very un-genuine and they were constantly peeking from behind a doorway. I understand that they were trying to see if my food was done or if we were ready for the next course but peeking in and out of the doorway awkwardly is probably the most disturbing thing when trying to enjoy a meal. Imagine you are sitting down and only half of a face pops out from behind A doorway entrance and then slowly moves back. It was like something out of a horror movie to be quite honest with you. Also the place was rather cold I know the house is old and probably didn't have proper insulation so it would make for a better atmosphere if the heat was turned up in the middle of January during a snowstorm. Otherwise I highly recommend this place you can hear everybody's conversations as the eating space is very small. But the food is fantastic I would maybe come again.

A fantastic evening experience. Knowledgeable staff, wonderful wines and excellent courses to match. Two and a half hours passed as if it were moments. We were even helped out by the staff when our car battery died during dinner. Will go again soon, hopefully without the car trouble. Thanks Jessica

If you are looking for a fine dining experience in Oregon, make reservations to this place. The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. I had such a great dining experience. We did the 8 course dinner menu and I was pleased with everything that came out. I had the best scallop here. The price range is up there, but it's worth it if you're celebrating a special occasion.

We were intensely disappointed with the food, service, and general experience at the Painted Lady. As it stands, we could not recommend the Painted Lady at any price point to a friend. I sent a note expressing my disappointment to the restaurant as well - and never received a response, which I think is indicative, too. I would not go back, even if the meal were free. The composition of several dishes was not good - but even worse, basic execution was off as well. To start, we were unpleasantly surprised by the no vaccination status verification required in a small room with no ventilation. In a larger space, this would be more understandable, but it was somewhat concerning in such a small space. The food itself was far below the standard expected - which was priced somewhere between what I would expect for a one or two Michelin star restaurant but had consistent issues both in the composition and execution of the dishes. We mostly ate our food, as we were hungry, having waited in anticipation for much of the day, but several elements were basically inedible, which is not a problem I typically face, even in fast food restaurants. A bison steak was well cooked if not particularly exciting, but the amuses were uninspired, and of limited flavor, the acorn squash dish grainy, unpleasant, not good to eat, the salmon adequate (certainly not worthy of the price tag) the miso custard quite awful by virtue of an enormous, rubbery prawn that was so chewy that I had to spit it back into my bowl. The pasta was mediocre and basically unsauced, and the cheese course was hard, scanty, clearly from the freezer, and had a gratingly harsh and unpleasant chardonnay gel. Dessert was a bit better ( a sorghum, orange and caramel plated dessert) - but nothing to write home about. The wine pairing itself was fine if not extraordinary but was presented by staff with very limited conviction or seeming understanding - with jumbled anecdotes confusingly recounted for a hurried twenty to thirty seconds, in one case, the waiter even failing to tell us the varietal (only the maker), and in another instance possibly confusing some basic wine terminology. Pours were large, but pairings were mostly things that I could have likely come up with myself, despite my limited wine knowledge. We had hoped for more, particularly in the Willamette. The service was perfectly fine if not at the standard I might expect for the price. While we're sympathetic to the labor shortages posed by the pandemic, it made me very sad when someone asked us "are we celebrating anything special tonight" before the cheese course after having specifically noted we were celebrating a birthday in our reservation (which was repeated back to me when a host called to confirm the reservation the day before). I hope very much that this was an off night - there are an extraordinary array of excellent restaurants in the greater Portland area if not.

An Experience. If you come here you are taking part in a unique experience. The staff doesn't miss a beat. The cocktails and wine pairings were exquisite. I tried foods and food pairings I probably wouldn't had ever tasted in my life. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because we didn't stay full for long after leaving.

We enjoy fine dining so for this years wedding anniversary we stayed local. It is a little gem in a pile of coal and you would not give it a second look or possibly a look at all if you drove by. Even though this city block is just one away from the main street which is full of gift shops, wine tasting, and other restaurants, many homes in the area of the Painted Lady are quite run down. The interior of this two story home was remolded with old charm of yesteryear. Imagine a horse and buggy bringing you to such a restaurant accompanied by other high society patrons. When men wore top hats and ladies carried umbrellas to shade from the sun. The interior will bring you to this period. We knew what to expect during our dining experience....and this is how it went....... Our first tasting was literally two ounces of soup on/in a 14 inch plate. That was not a good first impression. Understanding this was a 'tasting menu' but two tablespoons was not enough to fully taste and distinguish flavors. All I found was it to be bland. The following courses were better portions where I could distinguish flavors and textures.. Everything after the soup was delightful. My husband and I had the opposite of what was offered that evening so we were able to taste more of the selections. If you leave your table, there is always someone to offer your chair. My husband waved the gentleman away because he was not going to have a guy pull out his chair and seat him like a gentleman seating a lady. I just smiled. Getting to the end of dinner I felt overwhelmed with sweets. Before dessert we had a dish that would of been a wonderful dessert in it's self. Just a hint of sweetness, wonderful textures and flavors.....but then came Chocolate Peanut-butter layered cake, more like a heavy mousse, among other chocolate flavors. I enjoyed this with their house coffee and it couldn't get better then this. I should of ended my meal right there but......... I wanted to try everything to experience everything. I was getting nauseous. It was a nice ending to dinner two plates ago ...........thought we were finished ....another plate was brought out with different bite size confections. I had a taste of two. Not a good idea for me. My husband on the other hand finished most of them. The two wrapped salted caramels we offer to a little girl at the next table. From the meal, experience, service, and the bill, the evening was what we expected except the overwhelming servings of sweets.There are many aspects to each plate, and service topnotch, In comparison to other award wining restaurants in Portland I feel the Painted Lady is on the very high end of the price scale. It is nice to see a local business that is on the 'map', doing so well and recognized by Forbes.

Incredible!! Why isn't this place Michelin rated!? This was compatible to the French Laundry in Napa. The service was awesome and the waiter was so attentive! Each course was intricately placed on a plate. Highly recommend.

I booked this restaurant at the suggestion of Vineyard Inn for my daughter and her husband on their wedding night. The called the day before to confirm rez along with names, dietary restrictions etc. as it was a special occasion they took extra steps to ensure a great meal. All the courses were fantastic, steak was delicious and they were served a special little custom dessert. Thanks for making a memorable night on a very special occasion.

Our go-to place for our visiting foodie friends and our special occasions. A marvelous tasting menu meal comparable to those i have had in major cities and paid 3x or 4x the price. Having the wine pairing with the meal is a ta pricey but a marvelous experiences. We also attend their off-season Wednesday night experimental events which are fun an interesting.
