Paper Crane Review - Old Fourth Ward - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Paper Crane Lounge is hidden on the second floor of Staplehouse and feels a bit like a super villain’s lair. Instead of a swivel chair and a large ominous button, though, you’ll find high-end cocktails and a very short menu of upscale bar food - which means you can get a taste of Staplehouse without spending a whole paycheck. There’s a rotating list of ambiguously named drinks, like the Disco Nap and Masterpiece Theatre with descriptions such as “breezy,” “graceful,” and “intuitive,” instead of a list of ingredients. But just like the drinks downstairs, all of them are excellent." - Neal Cohen

PLEASE TELL ME WHY IS THIS COMPANY IN BUSINESS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY TODAY. I AM FURIOUS. It’s no reason a Chinese restaurant should be allowed to serve food and they don’t know how to cook Chinese food. This shrimp fried rice has NO SEASONING TASTE SOY SAUCE VEGETABLES NOTHING. This was supposed to be our meal later tonight because we were going to be in area where there is no food waiting to deliver our load. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Now I have lost time and money and guess what I’m hungry because I have nothing to eat. I DO NOT wish anyone to waste their time and money coming to this place. The name says it all m, I should have followed my first mind. Oh yeah I gave the crab Rangoon’s back because they were DISCUSSING. If a Chinese restaurant cant cook fried rice then SHUT IT DOWN!

Google
We moved from New York about 3 years ago and for 3 years we couldn't find good Chinese food in Wilmington until we found paper crane!! This place is consistently good and I'm always impressed with everything we've ordered. The boneless spare ribs and pork fried rice are incredible. The spare ribs are never dry or burnt and it comes with the most delicious sauce. My husband always orders general tsos with lomein and he's always happy. The steamed broccoli smothered in brown sauce is so addicting, we have to always get it. I'm highly allergic to sesame and this place takes allergies so seriously, I've never gotten sick unlike other Chinese restaurants in Wilmington. Very impressed with this place and just happy to find a consistent restaurant in Wilmington that never disappoints!

Google
By far the worst Chinese I've ever paid for. I got the General Tso's chicken and both the chicken and rice were so hard you literally could not eat it. And I love Chinese food. I got there at 1130 they open at 11. I'm convinced I got leftovers. The egg role was pretty good though. But I asked if they'd replace it since it was editable, and a flat out no. So first and last unfortunately. Obviously the good reviews were from several years ago.

Google
We always enjoy their food. It took us forever to find a good place and this one is it! We get lo mein every time and always say it’s the best we’ve ever had. You must try

Google
Beef and broccoli and fried dumplings. 2 mins from our hotel, hot and ready fast. Online ordering too. It was good. What you would expect from this time of restaurant. I would come back if we were in the area. 2 entrees and 1 appetizer was 22 dollars

Google
I received my order. I ordered a quart of beef and broccoli. I did not order beef and broccoli with a pound of white rice. The rice NEVER comes together. I found a flyer on my door today and decided to try it out. No utensils in the bag. No sauces. Never again.

Elisa Borrero

Google
This place is usually pretty solid. I would not suggest the sweet and sour chicken. It tastes more like the fried donuts and doesn’t have much chicken inside. Everything else I have gotten has been great tho!

Bill Archer

Google
Dingy, dark and dirty! It seriously scares me to think what the kitchen and the cooks look like!!!🤮 You walk in and the place is a disaster, all the tables are pushed to one side of the room with boxes piled high on top of them.

Yelp
Taste like in just came out of a can chicken chow main serving size is good but to be fair Wilmington is very hard to find good Chinese

Yelp
Some more amazing Chinese take out. Beef & mushrooms was amazing. Crispy chicken on the chiefs specialty list Amzing

Sam R.

Yelp
i really like the regular food, usually the lo mein or honey chicken. their wonton soup however is the worst i have ever had, tastes like feet and dirty dishes.

Christie P.

Yelp
Sooo good! Lo mein, general Tso chicken and spring rolls TO DIE FOR! I come here every time I'm in town. It's take out only but who cares! It's the bomb!

Caitlyn H.

Yelp
New place for us, we were excited. Ordered dinner from here 08/07/24 and ended up with food poisoning. DO NOT EAT HERE!

Mallory R.

Yelp
Got the chicken fried rice. Literally not veggies or seasoning. The rice wasn't even fired. I'm beyond over Wilmington's lack of decent restaurants.

Yelp
Three and a half stars! The food was good but not spectacular; the casing on the dumplings was a little thick and although we ordered them fried they delivered half fried and half steamed. The General Tso's chicken and sweet and sour chicken were mostly batter but the hunan and spicy garlic were delicious! Chicken wings and egg rolls were a little greasy but good flavor. Pretty quick delivery and all as ordered.

Yelp
So we have been looking for a go to Chinese American restaurant for sometime and we stumbled upon the Paper Crane. I have to say for our palate it works wonderfully for what we are used to when it comes to this type of cuisine. We have never had a bad experience here and the food is always hot and tasty. The staff is very friendly and easy to talk to. Unfortunately with most Chinese places nowadays there is no inside seating and the ambience and atmosphere is just an order and grab and go. Still a great a place to eat.

Carmen B.

Yelp
We ordered 3 separate dishes for family. Delivery did get here quickly, friendly driver at first. Garlic chicken, beef broccoli, shrimp lo mien dishes were not correct. Lo Mein was so spicy hot that husband could not eat it, tasted like hot peppers in it . Beef broccoli was meh but very sweet and did not taste like normal from other restaurants. Garlic chicken was mostly vegs (no vegs were listed on menu), bland and chicken tasted off. Called back to get Garlic chicken replaced and "manager" was very rude, no name was given. He said Garlic chicken always has vegs like every other Chinese restaurant. I had put "no vegs" when I ordered it but he said it was not on the order. Would not refund it but replaced it reluctantly. Husband refused to try anything else. Driver brings replacement and demands other order which I had thrown in the trash. I was not told to keep it for the exchange at any point in time. He says you always have to give back the previously order to get the replacement. After showing him the order in the trash bag, I offered to give him the entire trash bag (that was the only item in it). He refused and finally agreed to give me my daughters food while lecturing me about exchange policy. New order had a overpowering revenge amount of garlic in it, daughter ate some and gave up. We will not be ordering from this restaurant again and will wait to the day when our normal Chinese restaurant is open!

Yelp
I've been ordering here for ages and have been very satisfied (5 stars) but tonight the order came way overdue and the sesame chicken hard and not eatable. Have they changed hands?

Robin P.

Yelp
I spent 30 minutes trying to order online and their server kept crashing!!! When I decided to drive to the location and order. when I got there and showed them the order I was trying to place I was told it was 17 dollars more than what the online price was. I WILL never order from here again. I will also discourage anyone from ordering here!!!!! Lucky star has the same menu and is now or go to!

Kaitlyn P.

Yelp
Service was absolutely awful! The food was okay but it's not worth the rude staff!! Take your money elsewhere!!
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
Best egg rolls in Wilmington! Fast delivery and the spicy chicken fried rice can't be beat!
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
I got delivery and the man who delivered my food was about 50 maybe with dark hair, wish I knew his name. Anyway he was very polite and the delivery was very quick. Will definitely order delivery from there again.

Yelp
In the search for a decent takeout Chinese (or any Asian) in Wilmington, NC, we decided to try Paper Crane. I would give it an "A" for taste, but still what is the deal with using non-Asian ingredients (carrots, broccoli, and the ubiquitous filler, green pepper we have gotten used to, but zucchini????) in all the dishes? Where are the water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, baby corn? I know those aren't probably used in China either but zucchini and button mushrooms???? If someone could open up a decent Chinese, Vietnamese or Thai restaurant (and no, Indochine is not it) in this area, they would rake in the $$! Having said that, Paper Crane is one we will return to and just ask them to make it "more Asian" ;p. Taste of the Garlic Chicken was excellent, as was the pork Lo-mein. Springroll left a little to be desired - tasted like it'd been made a few days ago with hints of refrigerator. Vegetable moo-shoo was ok, but I liked the 'pancake' wrap they used. We ordered delivery and it was OK as far as speed. The delivery guy was very nice but they put in sooooooooo many packets of condiments (soy, duck and hot sauces and mustard) that I felt it was terribly wasteful - wish they hadn't done that.

Yelp
I ordered the sweet and sour chicken here and was extremely disappointed! It was my first time ordering here and I always love sweet and sour chicken so my expectations were high. Upon getting my food it looked great. The first piece I ate was just the fried stuff around the chicken which is common, but then as I kept eating almost every piece was just the friend part and minuscule amounts of chicken :( I had maybe 5 out of 15/20 good pieces. Will never get this again...
google avatar

Tracy S.

Yelp
All the food I get from here is always super good. You get a good bit for your money. The wait time for delivery usually is about 45 minutes. Plan ahead so you aren't waiting when you can't afford to, food really is worth it.
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
Twice I have been and seen raw chicken sitting out in the open, unattended in plastic tubs just on the other side of the open kitchen door. Sanitation score is 93. Tonight my chow mein showed up without noodles and soup was cold and flavorless. We are done going to this place.

Yelp
I was craving Chinese food last week and decided I would stop by Paper Crane after getting some groceries. It is pretty easy to find, and I did really like the interior. Although it's small, it is definitely a place you could sit down and have your meal. Not your stereotypical Chinese restaurant, for sure. The staff seemed pretty happy to see another Chinese person in their midst, and were very helpful with regards to helping me find my way back to the university (since I am a n00b with very poor sense of direction). They were also very prompt with waiting the table that I spotted while I was waiting for my food. My food didn't take very long to come out at all. I ordered a California roll and a kung pao chicken combination platter, which came with an egg roll and pork fried rice. The sushi was fine, but I had some issue with the kung pao chicken. Maybe I'm just spoiled, but it seemed to lack flavor. It wasn't spicy at all, and I have a bland palate. I usually can't eat spicy foods, but I was craving the kick! Imagine my surprise then when no kick came. It's not that it didn't taste good, but I was expecting it to be more flavorful. Because of that, I will hold out on more stars, but I will definitely be back. Takeout, eat-in, delivery, Paper Crane will definitely be getting more money out of me.

Yelp
There's good Chinese food and there's bad. Fortunately, the Paper Crane fits the first category. I was craving some chinese food and decided to give the Paper Crane a try based on its proximity to where I work and the other Yelp reviews. I'm glad i did. I ordered the cashew chicken with brown rice. Aside from being little heavy on the celery the meal was delicious. The brown rice was light and fluffy and perfectly cooked. The cashew chicken had a really nice flavor without being too heavy or sweet. My lunch also came with an egg roll and fried noodles- both of which i didn't order, but was a nice added value. I also ordered the wonton soup. It too was really good and quite possibly the best I've had in town. Not too greasy like some soups can be, but a light, broth based soup with some sizable wontons. All ingredients tasted fresh and the staff were very friendly. Lunch prices were very reasonable, especially considering I'll be having leftovers.

Yelp
Ordered delivery recently here and was pleasantly surprised....it was very quick in a rainy night. And the delivery man was very courteous. I had enough left over for another meal. Will definitely order from here again!

Yelp
Just, No. The food was one step away from being garbage.. How do you mess up MooGooGaiPan? The takeout was Watery and Sour. Flaccid leftover frozen vegetables, jiggly chicken, 4 slices the size of an old cuticle.. the canned water chestnuts were old, sour, slimy and foul. Tiny broccoli dust in veggie mei fun was yellow, tired, smelly and old. They are cutting every corner they can. Soup was gelatinous and the skinny tough spring roll had sat for DAYS! In oil! Nonono! This is terrible, cause they are nice people! Go to Chopstix. I had to spend $10 on diarrhea medicine the next day.
google avatar

Sasha D.

Yelp
Ya.. good place. We were looking for coconut shrimp but they didn't have it so we went with the coconut chicken. One dish fed two of us and we still had left over. Only reason not 5 stars from me, is that the chicken pieces were quite on the larger size then your normal bite sized piece. Looking forward to trying some other dishes. Vegetable friend rice was spot on.
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
The food was good! I got the sweet and sour chicken and my boyfriend got the lo mein. Mine also came with an eggroll which was excellent. The fried rice was a little plain. The only food we really didn't like was the boneless spareribs that we ordered as an appetizer....just really saucy and not the way I've ever had them before. The delivery was fast, will definitely order again.
google avatar

Antonio R.

Yelp
Our daughter recommended this place to us and we were pleasantly surprised the food is really good, the service is excellent and the prices are fair. We will be going again when we visit next.
google avatar

Mikaela H.

Yelp
I found multiple strands of hair in my take out. Nuff said. But in addition, everything was cold, my chaomein didn't have noodles & everything was so greasy, even for Chinese food.

Karen B.

Yelp
Very good food. I ordered the chicken with mixed vegetables combo. It came with choice of two sides I got fried rice and an egg roll. Both were delicious

Macie B.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised w Paper Crane! I am a skeptic of Chinese takeout and like what I ordered here. Really like their "diet" section of the menu where everything is just steamed with no added salt or sugar. Got the mixed veggies and can guarantee no salt touched them! Perfect for a healthy option at a Chinese restaurant, where there are typically rarely healthy options. would recommend the Lo Mein, spring rolls, Crab rangoons if looking for something not as healthy.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Good food, smaller portion than most. Beef was good, picked the food up but delivery is available

Yelp
I was excited to try this place for the first time...how quickly that excitement faded! The order arrived late -- it took approximately an hour and ten minutes when I'm literally located 4 minutes away from the restaurant, but hey things happen right? Sure! The young lady delivering the food was pleasant and friendly and offered a reason behind the delay, unlike whoever it is that answers the phones (not to mention that there are multiple numbers for this place, which should have been my warning sign!!). Immediately before the delivery driver leaves I recognize that there's no drink, which I made very clear that i was ordering, even though the presumptuous person on the phone somehow heard tip from the word drink and offered that the delivery fee isn't a tip to the driver (imagine if I hadn't have already known that from let's just say EVERY OTHER DELIVERY SERVICE!). So again the ever polite driver offers to go grab the drink and bring it back! Wishful thinking would hope that it would end the horror here right? Wrong! I check my order, it's incorrect, so hey, lets at not be savages, maybe it's an honest mistake...WRONG! Call the restaurant, the same guy answers, and asserts that I, the hungry, ordered my food the way he heard it because it's widely advertised (not) that drinks are side items and that their combos only come with 2 side items, as if no civilized human would dare order a specific meal a specific way and decide they want a beverage to accompany it, not replace the specifications provided. So the gentleman then does what most customer service personnel do when they realize their epic fail and don't want their superiors to know does, they become the manager!!! And I get the option of getting my food how I ordered it and having to pay extra for the drink that he flubbed on the initial order or get nothing...yes this human said "or you can get nothing!". Some customer service...don't waste your energy or your money!

Ashley W.

Yelp
Don't know why this place doesn't have a 5-star rating. I had one bite and immediately logged onto Yelp to write this review.... Started off by calling another place that was closer to my apt, but they didn't have delivery. You had to call an outside delivery service and pay for delivery through that company. IMO... ain't nobody got time for that. So I found Paper Cranes. First off, great online ordering experience. Very up to date and easy to do. You can even leave tip on the card during the self-service online ordering. They estimated a delivery time and it arrived before said time. Less that 45 min. Not bad for a Friday night. Delivery guy was very nice, and the best part is still yet to come. This food is GOOD. I got general Tso's chicken, pork lo mein, wonton soup, and white rice. So vibrant in color and truly delicious. The chicken is soft and juicy, noodles are very flavorful, HIGHLY recommend. Plenty of sauces and fortune cookies.. just what I like! I will be using this Chinese Restaurant exclusively for when I want delivery. Great job!

Yelp
I would like to thank you for ruining our meal, lying to my husband and saying our food was on the way and 2 hours after ordering we still have no Chinese food. Absolutely ridiculous. So sad this is what business has come to nowadays. Save your lies for another family. I would prefer to feed my 1 year old from a business that appreciates customers and customer service is valued. OH! Our food was finally delivered at 1015 by a very confused delivery guy that said he had "just gotten the order" and we had ordered at 815 and was told the order would be there in 30-45 minutes. And.... delivered without part of the order. NEVER EVER AGAIN. By the way... I'm pretty sure it's not "the new girl's fault." And I'm very thankful for the 5.5 pieces of meat in my beef and broccoli...
google avatar

Lindsay M.

Yelp
The chicken was literally mush, and dark brown in color. Not even sure what it was but it did not taste good. The plain noodles were good and that's about all. Ive been one other time and it was good but after that I won't be returning.
google avatar

Darby C.

Yelp
I am not normally a big fan of Chinese food, but today I was craving it, so I stopped by here. I was not disappointed! The place was almost empty, but I think it's the awkward location. The restaurant was clean, and the hostess was friendly. I ordered the coconut chicken with chicken fried rice and an egg roll.. it was AMAZING! Decently priced, plenty of food, they were not stingy with the chicken.. and their fortune cookies actually tasted good rather than stale/cardboard. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody wanting some some yummy Chinese food!
google avatar

Beth B.

Yelp
Horrible, we did takeout, potstickers were doughy, no clue what they were filled with, crab rangoons were stale, egg roll was Not good either, hard to fail that!

Larry C.

Yelp
Best Chinese American food I've had in Wilmington. Crab rangoon is to die for! Quick service and big portions, good price.
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese delivery. Have ordered several times and have not been disappointed. Recommend to anyone craving their favorite Chinese dish. Will definitely be ordering again.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
While working in Wilmington I had a craving for chinese food and based on some Yelp Reviews I decided to try this place. I was happy I did. The food was fantastic, fresh, and a little different from your standard Chinese/Japanese Fair. The Chef definitely put his own delicious stamp on his food. The restaurant was a nice, small place and was well decorated. I will absolutely be visiting again next time I'm in Wilmington
google avatar

Yelp
Heaping dinner portion, lots of tofu. Vegetables very fresh and cooked perfectly, still crisp and tasty!!

Yelp
we have been ordering from paper crane for four years with no issues, tonight after waiting the asked 30 minutes after ordering and prepaying on eat street, i waited at paper crane for an hour for our food. 6 other people came in and got their orders while i was there. Nothing was said to me as to why it was taking so long, the lady came out with half of it and proceeded to charge me for something that did not ring up right online then i had to wait 20 more minutes for the rest of my order. Had I not prepaid I would have walked out. no one said sorry, explained the reason or anything. once I got home the gravy container was cracked and spilled all over the bag and surrounding food. we will not be returning.
google avatar

Angie J.

Yelp
Lunch special - $6.95 for two sushi rolls, soup and salad! The sushi was fantastic - I had the asparagus tempura and spicy tuna. I would recommend ordering in person as there is a small language barrier over the phone. Two of the three things I ordered were right, but they quickly fixed the rest of my order.
google avatar

DS Q.

Yelp
It took almost an hour to get my food. It was alright, at best, when delivery finally arrived. I've had better. The General Tso's chicken was okay, the crab Rangoon was meh, and the fried rice was probably the best part, despite the fact that it had the least flavor. The wonton soup tasted like the plastic container it was in. Overall pretty disappointed, but at least everything was hot.
google avatar

Chandler B.

Yelp
The food isn't bad, but it's not great either. It's similar to the kind of Chinese food you would order in a food court at the mall. The delivery took a little over an hour to get here. I wouldn't say I had a bad experience, but I'm definitely going to spend my money elsewhere next time.
google avatar

Charise G.

Yelp
Second day in a row ordering from here it is definitely better than other places I have tried here. I definitely recommend this place. You really do get a lot for the price.
google avatar

Paige P.

Yelp
Great Chinese delivery. I love that the curry is actually spicy! Order has always arrived hot and the delivery drivers are great.

Jason E.

Yelp
Ordered Chinese food to go from the paper Crane they told us that the meal would be ready in 20 to 25 minutes. We did not get our food until 55 minutes after ordering. Horrible experience.
google avatar

Valerie V.

Yelp
I want to preface this review by saying you need to be extremely clear when ordering. They speak English but they seem confused. I was sure my order would be messed up but it was perfect. The food was on point. Super delicious and they make both Japanese and Chinese dishes. Reasonably priced, you'll be happy with the food from here.
google avatar

Mckenzie M.

Yelp
Ordered the hibachi chicken and shrimp for delivery tonight. It states on the menu that is comes with miso soup and a salad. But when I received it there was no salad; instead it was served with egg drop soup and an egg roll. Also I was told by the woman on the phone that white sauce came with it. Of course they only brought soy sauce. The chicken was extremely dry. Both the chicken and shrimp were covered in so much sauce that it was almost too salty to eat. The "hibachi rice" that I paid extra for was just white rice with some veggies and mushrooms thrown in. Needless to say I will NEVER be ordering here again. $20 for hibachi that doesn't resemble any hibachi I have ever had and food that was so bad I threw most of it out. Do yourself a favor and go to Blue Asia instead. Much less expensive and much tastier food!
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
Don't waste your time or money. The food was greasy and nothing outstanding. Very disappointing.
