I've always loved this theater. It was built in 1967. Before the Broward Center for the Performing Arts opened in 1991, the Parker was THE place (the only place in Fort Lauderdale) to see Broadway plays and high quality entertainment acts. Over the years, we've seen quite a few plays here. Years ago (before the Hard Rock, too), we would come here for a show (a play or a top singer or well known comedian) on New Year's eve. We've seen shows as diverse as "Stomp" and "Gumboots" and Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens.
And now that it's showing it's age, they're planning a big renovation next year -- especially to the bathrooms, and food concession areas.
Tonight we were here to see comedian Randy Rainbow. It was a sell out crowd. And a wonderful, funny, and entertaining event.
Meanwhile, the advantages are that the Parker seats just under 1200 at capacity. So it feels intimate -- like you are right on stage. There are no poles or obstructions. Every seat (they're in a raised semi circle) has a good view and good acoustics. The seats are comfortable and there is ample leg room in front of you. You enter on either side of the theater -- seats with odd numbers on the left and even numbers on the right. And each side lobby has a small concession stand with a full bar for drinks and snacks.
Downstairs are the restrooms and some chairs and small benches. There are several restrooms for each gender. And on the walls are paintings that you can peruse. The paintings are for sale and change. So if you're there with an intermission, you can busy yourself looking at the art, while waiting for your partner who is lined up to use the facilities.
They have valet parking if you pull up in front of the theater. We've been to shows where they've charged for self parking, too, but tonight there was no charge. You are directed to the self parking which is in a grassy area behind the theater. They seem very organized.
On entry, they do "wand" everyone and visually check bags and purses. It's a security ritual of today's times, unfortunately.
They have a pretty full schedule. You can check it out online. You can purchase tickets onsite at their box office or online. They are now affiliated with the Broward Center so there is some cross advertising/promotions.
