Another Wave of D.C. Bars Will Go Into Winter Hibernation | Eater DC

"I saw an Instagram post from The Passenger explaining, “Unfortunately, due to this damn COVID, it is time for The Passenger to go into hibernation. We’ll be closing after this weekend, hopefully to see you all again this spring. We love y’all, now come help us drink up all this beer!!” and learned they will be closing after this weekend." - Adele Chapin

From the moment you walk in the vibe The Passanger gives off is clear: This is a "New World" meets "Old World" kind of place, with a clear emphasis on World. The owners pay homage to the building's historic roots as being both a bank on the first floor and an opera house on the second floor. On the first floor where the restaurant is located there is ample seating across the many rooms (including inside the old bank vault!) and outdoor patio, at the center of which is a beautiful wooden bar with that old town kind of charm. My wife and I had gone for brunch. First off, let me say that the service was superb. Our host was attentive, kind, and accommodating; so much so that he even gave us a tour of the old auditorium upstairs after our dining experience. However, in terms of food, it was a little underwhelming. The presentation of the dishes were phenomenal; each one inspired by an equivalent dish from a different part of the world, but the flavor/texture was a miss more than a hit. I ordered the breakfast tacos, and the tortillas were somehow both overcooked and stale, my wife ordered the frittata and it was a bit on the dry side. The best dish by far was the spinach and goat cheese crepe, we'd absolutely order that again! As far as price goes it's certainly competitive for the area, but one thing that irked me a bit was the extra charge for the back-of-house staff -- I completely understand why some restaurants choose to do this, but I wish they'd just increase the prices on their menu and pay their staff appropriately rather than both virtue signal to their customers and passing those costs onto them. As they say in French: "C'est la vie" Will we back to The Passanger? Sure, and especially for a drink or three, but when it comes to the food and the overall experience our expectations will certainly be more tempered.

I don't generally post images of myself, particularly while I'm eating but I'm smitten with delight. I tried the Christmas burger the other day and I must say that I no longer have shame about my love for whats taking place here. You might say that I've come out of the food closet. Pantry? I've come out of the pantry and I want the world to know. I went ahead and ordered two and ate both burgers in secession. One in my left hand and one in my right hand. Your Christmas burger sent me reeling and it feels good. The pistachio herb crusted camembert cheese wheel stacked on your ground bison patty with cranberry jam chased me out of the pantry and into the truth of exactly who I am. Thanks. I didn't know that this was what I'd been missing. I didn't even like rocket until now. In fact I hated arugula completely. But after having it on the Christmas burger, I'm using rocket in places I never thought. Even the salt water aquarium I'm presently working on seems to be responding to it. I just dump the rocket in the aquarium and voila! Happy fish! Yes it's true, the garam masala spiced spiral ham was liberating, and it oozes fusion. "Foozion"? It "foozes" with multiple flavors but the Christmas burger is next level. I also loved the "no one knows" appetizer. I genuinely did not know what I was eating. I couldn't even indentify it. But it was so beautiful I just shoved it in my mouth and felt it. Well done you guys. 5 stars. No, eleven stars.

I was looking for a dinner spot for the hubby and me and came across The Passenger. Didn't look at the reviews since we were pressed for time. When we walked in we were hesitant as we were the only ones in the restaurant, not a good sign! Our sever Shayla was friendly and super sweet, she took our drink order, we had a glass of wine. She returned with our wine and told us all about the building and the restaurant and a little about the owner. She said we could walk around and explore so we took our glasses of wine and explored the different rooms, pretty cool place! The menu is eclectic, foods from around the world. I ordered the beef chimichurri and the hubby got the ghost burger. Both were delicious! We were pleasantly surprised. We will be back, possibly for their mystery dinner, we were told not two are the same!

Beautful space in the old Dicken Opera House. Like instagram worthy beautiful. We ordered some mocktails that were very tasty. We decided on tapas so we could get numerous different plates. Everything was so good and the food came out quickly. As we were leaving the manager/owner came over and explained their passport rewards program and stamped our ‘passport’ according to the dishes we ordered since they came from all over the world. That night they were having a blind tasting event and a lot of people were coming in for it. Great place to stop in for even if its just for a drink at the gorgeous bar.

My partner and I were so excited for a special date night— the Mystery Blindfold Dinner by Chef Madhoo — and it exceeded our expectations. It was a fun-filled, exciting, one-of-a-kind experience. We are still talking about it weeks later, each course was inspired by cuisine from different country or part of the world. We have traveled a lot and some of the dishes brought us back to places we have visited and the flavors they embody. The staff was tentative and passionate as they guided us through the evening and helped support each guests to navigate eating blindfolded. Very grateful for all the knowledge and insight Chef M shared with the group at the end of the event. We left feeling inspired! Will definitely be back to enjoy more special events at The Passenger Restaurant and plan to hire their catering team for my job’s company events!

Ok, I just have to write about this place. I've visited three times in the past months and the food was delicious, interesting and thoughtfully prepared. I said several times, "the chef really knows what they are doing". Trying new things is what The Passenger is all about and they have an internationally-inspired menu so come ready to try something you've never had. Also, this is EXACTLY what Longmont needs in a sea of American or Mexican fare. First visit I had an entree and second visit our table shared tapas which I highly recommend and were appropriately priced for portion size (most of them could be split for 4 people to try). I had the pleasure the second time to have met one of the owners (Vipul Seth) who was very much engaged in making sure we were enjoying our meal, pointed out their fun mini passport that you can have stamped and earn discounts .. and had an infectious passion for what they are doing there. I'd been wanting to do the blind food tasting (mystery menu) event and a friend and I ended up going last night and it did NOT disappoint. Chef Madhoo Seth plated each dish then came out to speak about her experiences and travels and walk us through what we might be tasting prompting fun discussion and then described each dish after we completed it (she shows you the complete dish). (You wear a blindfold and it's actually pretty fun to try to eat with one on, had us giggling.) Chef clearly loved what she was doing and that love came out in her presentation and flavors. It was PLENTY of food (in fact, I was actually stuffed afterwards and should have taken the "we can box this up for you" advice, but I was having way too much fun and scooping deliciousness into my mouth.) Thanks for a great experience, we are already planning on who we can bring to do the tasting event again.

Google
I loved the atmosphere and had such a unique experience there for a blind tasting for a date night with my husband we both had a great time though it all and the food had such unique flavor love it all! Can’t wait to visit again and try more of the menu there!

I attend an event organized by the Emerge group. We got to sample lots of Tapas and cocktails! Everything was thoughtfully made and amazing and beyond my expectations. The food was so delicious and the perfect size to sample lots of tapas. The cocktail pairing was fantastic. Service was excellent and everyone was so helpful. The ambiance was so welcoming.

Yelp
The Passenger Restaurant, Longmont CO This restaurant is not to be overlooked. In an old brick building on a busy intersection of Longmont at Main & 3rd. You might think it is just a bar...but upon entering it is a fabulous vintage building with an original hand carved bar reminiscent of old San Francisco, Chicago or New York. Cozy and warm despite the incredible high ceilings. There are multiple places to dine within the space...the bar area, a main dining room with vintage photos of old Longmont and even and old safe! The food in scratch- made on beautifully presented plates. This is not the type of place you take home leftovers of processed food...its scratch made fine cuisine with reasonable prices in a calm, gorgeous old-world atmosphere...don't miss this unassuming find!

Yelp
Had a wonderful double-date at this clever, travel-inspired restaurant. You can collect passport stamps as you explore dishes from around the world, which makes each visit even more fun. I thoroughly enjoyed my tikka masala and dirty martinis.

Yelp
We were in the area and decided to try The Passenger. We both ordered the tofu sandwich with fries and LOVED it. Sometimes vegan options are bland and boring, but not this sandwich. Every component was perfect, including the sear on the tofu, the pickled onions, toasted bun, etc. It was delicious! The waitress was very nice and helpful as well. I took the attached pic after I'd already eating half of my sandwich. ;)

Yelp
What fun! Went in and had some of their tapas. $6. Nice little selection. Suya and bunny chow were our favorites. Live music. A wonderful guitar player in the main bar area. They also have two other rooms to dine in if you want a different atmosphere. Staff were friendly. Food was nice. Cocktails were excellent! A fun affordable night.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch one day, and it was slow; however there was one table being served at the front of the house. The person on staff, which appeared to be the only one there, looked at us, and continued conversing with the occupants of the table. We stood at the host booth for another 10 minutes until it was clear that our business wasn't important to them and left. The brunch place down the street was more than happy to take our money and seated us promptly. What gives? No greeting? Just rude, with prices and lack of crowds seems like a lot way to run a business.

Yelp
We went for one of the Blind Mystery Menu dinners on NYE and can't wait to go back! Each course was absolutely delicious (we chose the vegan option but the meat eaters sounded pretty happy too) and the whole experience course my course sensing textures and detecting flavors (which are out of this world)while blindfolded was something so new and different and yes you can eat soup line folded better than you think ;) We're excited to go back on a regular night too. We're excited to have them in Longmont

Yelp
Meh. Food, atmosphere, and service - not so bueno. Feels like the place is trying to survive, but is on hospice.

David M.

Yelp
Was nervous about going back due to reputation, but delighted to see a new, more concise menu, better service, and great vibes! Affordable tapas and great cocktails - love the old fashioned! Must-see location on the Longmont strip!

Lyn B.

Yelp
I had the avocado toast here. I don't know what they're putting in the toast but it's not avocado! Returned to try some small plates and got plain, burned mini burger patties with no seasoning or flavor at all. Don't waste your time or money. Also they absolutely destroyed our beautiful, historic opera house.

Yelp
This was our first visit since this restaurant rebranded from Roots to The Passenger. We arrived about 4pm on a Saturday and were off to a bit of a rocky start with the service initially. It took 5 minutes for anyone to notice we'd entered. Once we were seated, we both ordered a drink to sip on while browsing the tapas menu. The happy hour is a good deal, and we liked all the drinks we tried (house Merlot, Taj Mahal, and the First Lady). Unfortunately, my partner's drink came right away. The waitress said she would check on mine. She came back quickly empty handed and asked if we wanted to order. I didn't really want to yet since I still had no beverage, but we ordered 1 tapa and figured we could keep browsing. The tapa came out a few minutes later ... still no drink. We were prompted to order entrees. My partner said we'd prefer to wait until my drink arrived before ordering more. This was when the waitress mentioned they were short that day. I get it! She was friendly, doing her best, and obviously does not control the bar by herself. We ordered two more tapas, a couple more drinks as the evening went on, and a dessert. Everything we had was really delicious! There were a couple of instances of different servers, bringing food and drinks to the table that weren't ours. I think this was just a side effect of the staff being really busy. This place definitely deserves a chance. The food and drinks were both fantastic (the pretzel, poutine, chefs board, and the traveling donut - curry flavor! Amazingly good!). The service could use a little bit of work, but I think that is true a lot of places given the macro environment around finding people right now. The staff they do have are doing their best! They also have a cute frequent flyer program, so make sure you ask for your passport and start collecting stamps! I hope one day they will be able to expand the menu to offer more Arabian and Indian food options. Mezze would be great on the tapas menu! Note: There is a 3% fee added to each check for the kitchen. Just be aware.

Marcia W.

Yelp
We had the mystery menu dinner - all 4 dishes were excellent and used fresh and international ingredients in a very interesting way. Chef Madhoo Seth aptly accommodated all our dietary restrictions. Service was good with several wait staff on hand. All dishes for all patrons came out at once for a blindfold test. We liked the idea of guessing what was in the dish and it was fun to do so! Interesting space - had a bank vault and a picture of a world map which was cool - it used to be Dickens Opera House. Nice touch at the end was a glass of champagne for guessing the desert grain that was used. I would definitely go back to try other dishes!

Yelp
good food and love the passport concept to try food from all around the world! the owner was so nice and the waitstaff was very attentive. will definitely be back!

Yelp
The food is delicious. Especially the Brussel sprouts and Pierogis! There is something for everyone on the menu. The service is great and the wait staff is very gracious! The restaurant is located in Olde Town Longmont and use to be the town bank. You can dine in the vault which is said to be Haunted! They have lost of events and shows in the Opera House upstairs. Don't miss this great experience when in Longmont.

Yelp
Great spot for a lunch date. Comfortable, classic restaurant. Pleasant and capable waiter. Food was tasty and well presented. We look forward to trying dinner soon!

Yelp
Went in for a quick bite tonight. My wife and I tried the tapas and cocktails. Nice to make it in at 5:45, just before happy hour end, even on Sunday. The tapas were great. I got bread pudding for afterwards and really enjoyed it. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was great. The vegan chocolate cake wasn't the best.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
The set up of this place is weird for sure but the food was absolutely phenomenal! Drinks took a little long from the bar but it didn't bother me. I have to say it is very expensive and definitely not casual for dinner. The inside is gorgeous just an over all great place!

Yelp
Update: I just removed one star because of the 22% sustainability charge that no one ever pointed out. Last night my family and I tried the new Roots location in the revamped Dicken's Tavern. While the space itself needs some tweaking, there were definitely highlights worth mentioning. The service was excellent - our server was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and great with the kids. The creative takes on classic dishes also showed promise. The salmon and khichdi in particular were well-executed and nicely flavored. However, the overall ambiance missed the mark for me. The decor and music felt a bit like a random pub, lacking the charming, upscale vibe I expected. Drinks were on the pricier side and leaned very sweet. I tried the "Taj Mahal" which tasted more like fruit juice than a craft cocktail. The menu font also made dishes hard to read. While there are definitely areas for improvement, I see potential in Roots. With some refinements to the atmosphere and bar program, and keeping the excellent service and interest in global flavors, they could really find their groove. I'm willing to give brunch a try to see if daytime brings a different feel. I hope they make a few tweaks because the food itself shows promise, and I'd love to see this concept succeed in the neighborhood.

Yelp
This is a cute restaurant tucked away in a neighborhood in Broomfield. The menu is global tapas and they have different sections dedicated to Latin food, Indian dishes, New American cuisine, Asian food, Southern cuisine, and more. It seems like everything is housemaid and you can tell the chef put a lot of love into the dishes. They also have a beer, wine, and cocktail menu. We sat outside in the spacious courtyard and our server JJ was very personable and took excellent care of us. While we were outside we witnessed a hawk try to snatch up a bunny! Thankfully the bunny got away but it was like watching the nature channel as we ate! Super cool! I recommend this spot for large groups who want to share tapas and try different things. They have gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options on the menu.

Yelp
Newly opened in beautiful downtown Longmont! We had an excellent meal there last night! Cauliflower Fritters, Beef Chimichurri, Khichdi (Indian lentil and rice dish; not pitcured) were very good! The Bread Pudding can't be missed. The brunch menu looks excellent. Our server Molly was sweet and on it! Nice by the glass wine selection; has a glass of Ladoucette Sauvignon Blanc, BY.OTT Rosé, and Delas Cotes-du-Rhone. All delicious. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Dave H.

Yelp
Interesting restaurant, in the middle of a neighborhood in a former Masonic lodge with an odd country club vibe. Roots' food is small plates / tapas style -- though, as we did it, mostly treating a dish as an individual course. The dishes come out as ready, not in any kind of order, which was easier to coordinate and, in theory, bring things out fresh, but made the service a little chaotic. In general, the food across the ambitious menu was good. My parmesan truffle fries were flavorful but not quite fresh. My lamb vindaloo had good flavor to it, it a bit dry. The Korean beef tacos, Brussels sprout caesar salad, and mushroom leek grilled cheese sandwich got kudos all around. The dessert menu had a good selection. The vegan "death by chocolate" cake and the bread pudding received high marks. Decent cocktail, beer, and wine list, though they were out of some of the wines. On the whole, a decent, if a bit pricey dinner. We'll most likely be back again.

Yelp
The Passenger was and excellent choice for Thanksgiving! It was my first time there, and my second Thanksgiving meal for the day, and so very much enjoyed the dinner that I finished all of the generous portions! All of us in my party were delighted with the very creative cuisine, great attention to detail, attentive staff, and diligence in providing a gluten free meal that was in every way exceptional! The ambiance is friendly and un-pretentious with warm brick and beautiful wood accents, along with well-curated artwork! The Dickens building has such historic charm! It was easy to have comfortable conversation, as well, with spacious booths and and good sound acoustics. Tables are also available. Will definitely be going back to The Passenger restaurant for another memorable meal!

Yelp
We went to try out the new menu at The Passenger in Longmont. We loved the handheld Gyro. They toast the pita so there's this delicious crunch. Their sellers potato fries are house made, crispy and delicious. I got the side salad which came with a citrus vinaigrette and it was perfect. We'll be back to try the evening tapas!

Yelp
Our first time here, enjoy the meal!! The igloo experience was fun. Great service and really good food. My positive criticism would be to figure out a method of keeping the dishes hot while bringing them out to the outside and to the igloos. Excellent flavor, excellent creativity just needed to warmer temps of the entrees. We came on a fixed menu and was prepaid reservation so I knew what to expect about the menu, but never sure of the service, well we had an excellent experience with fantastic service. Would come back here to sample more creations

Yelp
We came here for a girls celebratory night and I could not be any more pleased with our experience. Our server, Lily, has been the best server I've ever had in my dining experience in Colorado. What made her different from other servers was her honesty, attention to our table, and authenticity. She's genuinely sweet and helpful! Whenever I go back, I want her as my server again LOL that's how much we all loved her. We had a table of 8. We were told we could have complimentary champagne, chai, or hot chocolate. We all got the chai and it was seriously the best Chai I've ever had in my life. They change the menu every season and they also have a chefs favorite menu where they let their employees make the recipes/dishes! Super cool! All the food options were delicious. Some came in small portions and others we shared. Prices are adequate for the quality of food. You can tell they make everything fresh and use quality veggies + meat. The drinks were amazing! They also had really good nonalcoholic drink options. Wine selection was broad. And the atmosphere inside the restaurant is super cute! We reserved and igloo and it was seriously one of the best experiences ever. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Lily was amazing! Great food and service! Great ambiance with the music and decor! American

Yelp
We came to this location primarily for the igloo reservation. The brunch/lunch rates are really reasonable, but it does warm up in the tent, so I suggest going in the evening or wearing layers you can shed on a cool or cloudy day. My favorite part was that we were completely alone in the outdoor area, and that level of privacy is exactly why we enjoy the igloos in the first place. We plan to come back of an evening next weekend. The food was very good, but not GREAT, which is why I've given 4 stars instead of 5. My eggs were over cooked but everything else was pretty good ; but nothing particularly memorable. Their bottomless mimosas are a great price as well! I would recommend trying this spot; at least for the igloo experience! The indoor area is also very nice ; the outside of the building does not really reflect the aesthetic inside.
google avatar

Justin J.

Yelp
The brunch was phenomenal! Had the Shaka Susa which was one of the best things I've had for brunch in ages! Wifey and her friend both had the Eggs Benedict which were fire! And the Avocado Toast landed well too!!! Wait staff was helpful and quite hilarious as well! Also, there was a band playing at the front. Not so loud we couldn't talk at the table but just loud enough to enjoy! Couldn't be happier with our brunch!

Caleb S.

Yelp
This was our first time trying Roots in Longmont and were super disappointed with the food. Service was great, and the ambiance and location (we sat outside on the patio) were nice as well. The food however was not good. Our table ordered the mussels, which were over cooked and tough with no flavor; the beef chimichurri which was also flavorless and the chimichurri only tasted like parsley only; the Spanish gnocchi lacked flavor and the sauce was watery; the Murg Makhani was the best dish of the bunch but the amount of chicken on the dish wasn't worth the $25 dollars. The drinks we ordered were quite delicious, but unfortunately, don't think we'll be back. There are too many other great places in the area with better tasting food!
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
Mid at best customer service incredibly below par. They are never there or they try to give you attitude. Our most recent visit we ordered a Togo on the phone and was told they don't have raspberry preserves (gotten multiple times there) told to get ketchup instead that they did not give me took 1 hour to get two Monte Crisco's when we were quoted 20 minutes over the phone. We had to call twice because they hung up on us the first time. From previous experience there there cocktails are not really good. There are either way too sweet or way to sour. They try to make it fun by adding glitter but all it does is make a bad cocktail look like a the five-year-olds throw up. When we have been there, there is never more than two tables there including us. Spend your money elsewhere it's not worth it. It's sad to see what the Dickens has turned into.

Yelp
Roots is anything but boring. I say this because pre COVID usually spots like this is not affordable or available to the masses. You will know once you get in. Exactly why it's a great spot to take advantage of. Great price point on their dishes. If I saw them and knew about them a while back I would guess that this combo is bound to happen. Read below... So they married Gourmet Kitchen Catering and Roots. It's bound to happen like I said. They found a great spot where outside dining in our COVID condition is the most ideal. Don't get me wrong. The inside is huge as well. You can do an intimate dinner for two or a huge wedding! They have been catering for 18 years. Madhu the wife is the Chef and Vipul the husband takes care of the rest. Prob you'll see him more. They're very specific about what their vision is. They want to present an eclectic fusion cuisine. This spot is geared towards a Pre- paid dining experience. It's great in that you just set up your day, time and order your food, pay and indicate where you want to dine. Indoor or outdoor and show up! This husband and wife team is a smart move. Kudos! Tip: take a screen shot of your order so it's easy for you to keep up with what's coming in hot! Lol! The food prepared by Madhu was amazing. Outdoor dining maybe in their pergola . The whole place is surrounded by greeneries and flowers. It was amazing. You get your own table with an umbrella. So private!
google avatar

Natalia S.

Yelp
Roots is a beautiful event space that has been converted into a restaurant to make it through these tough times. I love outdoor "patio" -- which is actually a large patio and lawn and gazebo that are fenced in and have tables set up on for dining. It's great for keeping large amounts of social distancing while dining outside. We had brunch here, but they also do happy hour and dinner. I was a big fan of the chicken and waffles, which wasn't greasy at all -- as well as the $15 bottomless mimosas. Also love the desserts: bread pudding is always a hit, plus their basil blackberry ice cream is perfectly herbaceous and refreshing. Seems like a very family-friendly place too, with all the space and traditional breakfast options.

Karen L.

Yelp
I ordered a drink, bourbon and coke. $15.00?! that's outrageous! I was going to see a show upstairs and asked about ordering food to take up. The bartender (blond female) said they couldn't do that. once upstairs for the show, I got online with the restaurant and placed an order for pickup. Why the bartender couldn't have offered that option is beyond me. She also would not give me a to-go cup for my overpriced drink knowing I was going upstairs. Needless to say I won't be going back at least not to the bar area.

Angie H.

Yelp
The Passenger offers an amazing range of dishes from across the world. we thoroughly enjoyed their mystery dinner experience. Can't wait to do it again.

David C.

Yelp
We had a lovely dinner at roots the weekend after thankagiving. It was nice to do small plates after over indulging for the holiday. They had options for everyone including vegan/vegetarian. It appears to be a lovely event space and they keep the restaurant open when they aren't booked out. It works and I'd definitely go back especially if they chef rotates that menu seasonally! Try the chickpea curry or the vegan tacos.

Iginia B.

Yelp
Food great, very tasty and completely eclectic menu. The owner stopped by and gave us special attention. The service was good and he made great suggestions from r dessert. All in all fabulous.

Yelp
I've now dined here 3 times--twice for takeout, once in the restaurant, so this is a carefully considered review, not a "omg, the waiter seemed SO rude, 1 star!" kind of thing. I'm now well acquainted with the menu, the value proposition of what they're trying to do, and the neighborhood (I live a half mile away so LOVE the idea that there is a restaurant like this in this unlikely place!). On value: Don't even think about coming here without getting the Groupon, which will save you the full cost of an entree. Even *with* the Groupon it's on the spendy side ($185 for 4, included 1 bottle wine). This is not one of these places where you'll feel full after the appetizer, or can skip the app because the entree might be filling. You will leave hungry unless you get both an appetizer and an entree. On food: Their dishes show off some creative concepts and interesting taste pairings. I definitely enjoyed the cauli wings and the fried brussels sprouts. My son loved the mac and cheese bites. My parents found the salmon surprisingly infused with flavor. There are lots of things on the menu that *look* really interesting, and are OK when they arrive but not as dazzling as the writeup sold them. They dishes, though considered with an attentive eye, are highly uneven in terms of quality and value. The cauliflower quesadilla was embarassingly bad--literally soggy tortilla chips and unmelted yellow cheese you might get in a dismal retirement party. My steak chimichurri was limp, not warm (and importantly--not NEARLY as large and bright as this same dish is in the Yelp banner photo). They charge too much for these dishes for this to not be fatal faux pas. On setting and staff: While the servers were friendly, the pace, attentiveness, and professionalism was not up to the price point. The restaurant room itself is a banquet hall that has not really been converted: you expect a slight bit of ambience at that price point. (Outdoor dining is nice but, hey, the sun and beautiful neighborhood do the decorating there.) Dish pacing was uneven and may have contributed to some dishes being past their prime by the time they reached the table. The poor logistics of the establishment (the kitchen is down a large set of stairs, some ways away from all the table) may contribute. I appreciate what Roots is doing, I do think there's some calibration to be done before I try the place again, but I'll be paying attention to others reviews and experiences as this is just around the block.

Yelp
Finally decided to try Roots after an incredibly underwhelming experience a year and a half ago when they were in Broomfield. The good: my partner had the masala omelet and enjoyed it immensely- the omelet, the potatoes - he loved both. And for $10 it was a great deal. The server was very sweet as well. I had the avocado toast - 2 slices of bread cut in half with about half an avocado mashed over the 4 pieces of bread - topped with undressed arugula, a small slice of tomato on each slice of bread and and a balsamic glaze. This dish was $12 and while it tasted fine, it's priced a bit high for what it is - dressing the greens and adding some finishing salt would have elevated the dish. We both got the chai, iced with oat milk. An approximately 6 oz portion for $6 was mostly mil with very little chai flavor. The side of bacon was $5 for 2 v thin strips of bacon - think Oscar Mayer. Oh! And we weee seated in front of the south facing window with the afternoon sun at peak intensity - window treatments would have been nice to lessen the severity of the blinding hot sunlight. Overall would not recommend and likely won't come back.

Yelp
My wife and I had a wonderful date night at the Passenger, and really enjoyed ourselves. Beautiful atmosphere, live music, and the food was just fantastic. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
I had really high hopes for this place but left feeling very "meh" both times that I've been here. The first time that I went was for happy hour. It was during March, so all women received a complimentary glass of house wine or a margarita for women's history month. Immediately I thought, "I'm going to love this place." The inside is very cute - industrial but modern, tons of plants, velvet couches. Totally my vibe. I ordered a flatbread pizza (very meh) and potato croquettes. The flatbread was on the happy hour menu, and the croquettes were not. The croquettes were definitely better than the pizza, but nothing stellar. I ordered a 2nd drink as well - Bettin on the ponies. It was a whisky cocktail with mint kombucha. I couldn't taste any whisky, and while the cocktail was rather large, it seems like it was mostly kombucha. Really not worth the money. I decided to give Roots a 2nd chance for an igloo dinner and their monthly "cultural menu". I was very excited to see that each cultural menu has two offerings - "regular" and vegan. I ordered the vegan option which consisted of soda bread with pesto, a potato soup, a vegan shepherds pie, and a brownie with pistachio ice cream. Everything was over cooked and pretty bland. The edges of my shepherds pie was basically burned. I also ordered the Rosebud Motel cocktail which just tasted like a mason jar of cranberry juice. I don't think I'll go back (fool me twice, you know?) but I sincerely hope that they can improve the quality of both their food and drinks. The staff were all so friendly and the location is so cute. It's a shame that they couldn't live up to expectations.

Yelp
Wow! JUST WOW!!! The food was SUBLIME! We shared 3 apps, 1 entree and a dessert plus beverages. We shared because we couldn't decide between their delectable seasonal menu or their delightful standing menu. We will have to go back another time this month so we can taste the rest of the menu before it changes in April. We met Saul and Lilly who were so welcoming and brought both our pups special dog treats ON A PLATE!! I mean to tell you these pups were spoiled! The outside atmosphere was so quiet and tranquil at the transparent igloo at the Broomfield location and it was lovely to see the garden boxes getting ready to be planted, once the weather cooperates. I can't wait to go back again and see what their creative chefs concoct in their kitchen next!

Yelp
It has good food, I went with my family and a member is vegan and Roots has food that they can eat. The service was great, we got a tour of the building and learned about the history of it.

Yelp
The building was interesting and the seats were comfortable. The menu was extremely limited. We both ordered omelets. I ordered onion and bell peppers and got Serrano peppers in mine, which made it too spicy for me to eat. The waitress was kind, but legit got everything wrong. I had to ask for jam for my toast which she said they didn't have and I did get 10 min later. No idea what kind it was. I ordered a side of bacon that came out mostly fat. We ordered regular brewed coffee which was FIVE DOLLARS per cup, our first cups were lukewarm and they ran out for refills. The coffee was weak and not great. Starbucks is better and cheaper. They only had one bathroom. Male/female. I didn't send back my incorrect omelet because that's not my thing. I spent 30 min picking out the serrano peppers. We skipped Ihop in favor of better food and atmosphere. Should've gone there instead.

Yelp
Cozy place with spaced out tables. Great ambience, great food and great drinks. Desert was the highlight.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday for happy hour. Omg. I can't begin to say how much we loved this place. The menu is like nothing we've ever had before. Tapas that are themed from all over the world. Each one just big enough for two to share so we tried 4 different tapas. I wish I could remember the girl's name who waited on us. (Had glasses on) she reminded me of some of the waitstaff I'd had at a few Michelin star restaurants in San Francisco. She knew every detail about everything on the menu. And was soooo nice and professional. Super smart. I was concerned about live music. But they had a guy named Christian Porter playing guitar and singing. It was perfect. Not too loud. Could still hear each other talk. But he was also really good. I'd just sit in the bar and drink and listen. We will DEFINITELY be back and recommend this place to our friends. (PS for families. The kids menu looked great!)

Yelp
Roots is a catering company that has shifted to make it during COVID, and it definitely shows. Shifting your business model is hard, shifting it during a pandemic is challenging. They're definitely trying & I hope they make it, and are able to shift their model if they decide to keep the restaurant portion of their business. We stopped by for brunch on recent weekend with friends. First things first: mimosas & bloodies. These pours were very off. Our friend's bloody was heavy on the vodka and some Tomato juice (I think!). The OJ in the mimosa is just a bit too acidic for my taste. Hubs and I also ordered a coffee. Coffee....well, what we had wasn't coffee...it has more of a black tea taste to it than coffee. We kindly asked what kind of coffee they serve but definitely didn't think we got coffee. If you didn't know they were a catering co, the food would give it away. Lots of their menu, which normally could be a good thing, but not if you're still acclimating to your new way of business. Some of our food was cold (ie it didn't take too long to prep) and some was warm/fresher. They could probably narrow their brunch menu down to ensure quality food each time. Having worked with business owners, I share this review in hopes that it'll help the business owner. They have the potential and good space, just need a few tweaks.

Yelp
We had a delightful lunch at Roots today. The food was great. We each chose something different. I had the masala omelet, the accompanying potatoes were seasoned beautifully. The salads looked wonderful. We had three different desserts. They were all beautiful & tasty. I'm gluten intolerant & there were plenty of choices for me! Our waiter was fun! I love the old opera house! Best wishes for success!

Yelp
Awesome global tent seating outside. It was 40 degrees outside with snow on the ground and it felt like 80 degrees inside one of these little things with the flaps open. Chefs special with gyro beef and waffle fries were outrageously delicious. Meat was tender and well seasoned. Pita bread was thick and fresh. There was a light white sauce that was pleasantly tangy. Fries were crispy and fresh.
