"The King is dead, long live the King." Rarely does the saying ever come true, but as of tonight you can count at least one occurrence. While the original Passenger location, and my corresponding review, might read as a swan song to single life, the new iteration is a bit more mature, with a bit of the old sleaze brushed off...for better or worse, depending on your point of view. For me that means coming with a lady who for sure appreciates what we're about to drink, and a staff that has years of knowledge now under their belt. Even with the change of venue, to a more up and coming neighborhood, you won't find a better made drink for a better price than at The Passenger.
Obviously quite a bit has changed in the year and a half since the old Passenger closed its doors and the new opened up. For starters, the entire neighborhood of Shaw has blown up. The old Passenger wasn't quite divey, but also had a charming DGAF vibe, partly due to its location on a seemingly random corner next to virtually nothing else of note to locals. It's now squarely in the middle of some of the hottest real estate in the city, and only time will tell whether these new residents will alter the atmosphere. The space isn't as dark or as cramped as the old location, even though it's supposedly smaller. Personally I preferred the former, but that may just be nostalgia. And that's not a knock on the new space, the murals, seating, bar, and everything else are dope for sure, but you can't create charm which old Passenger had in spades.
One thing that hasn't been altered is rock star bartenders who can whip up whatever you're craving, and offer suggestions if you're stumbling for creativity. The food menu is almost completely intact too, notably carrying over one of the greatest bar foods of all time, the pork cheek nachos. Hopefully the top notch Cuban sandwich joins it on the menu in the future.
To come are live bands upstairs, weekend karaoke, and eventually a roof deck. That's all nice, but as long as they keep hiring some of the best staff in the city and turning what might be seen as low-tier liquors into top quality drinks while maintaining some of DC's most reasonable prices then consider me a regular once again. Even if I do have to Uber both ways now. (And if you want something fancy they still got that too. Like an absurd rye selection and both Chartreuse varieties on tap.)
