The 33 Best Restaurants in Kansas City | Eater

"The king-sized whole Buffalo wings are the main draw here, but Kansas City’s oldest continuously operating bar and grill also scores points with cheap beer, iconic dive bar ambience, and a comforting cheddar BLT. Know before you go: Good wings take time. Order them upfront while you decide on the rest of your meal." - Liz Cook

Food was pretty good at this location, but not as good as the other one I have been to. The patio is much larger though. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, and my fiance ordered the BLT.

Lindsay Beamer

Google
My coworkers and I frequent this location for lunch, and it's always good. Service is pretty quick and friendly. Lots of tv's for your viewing pleasure. Today's special was the French dip. The bread was soft and meat plentiful. I would definitely order it again.

Google
We live across the street from The Peanut and go often. The food and service are always excellent and portions are great for the value! Tonight, I picked up our dinner and realized that we were missing a small part of it. When I went back, the manager working went above and beyond to make it right - even refrying my onion rings so they would be hot and crispy. Mistakes happen and it wasn’t a big deal, but we were very appreciative of all they did. We’ll continue to be frequent customers!

Google
great hot wings, good blts, good rubens. great service can't go wrong with anything here!

Google
The Peanut is a great spot for a drink and some good bar food. The atmosphere is relaxed, the drinks are solid, and the food is tasty for bar standards. It’s a no-frills place that gets it right. Perfect for hanging out with friends or unwinding after a long day.

Joshua Hamilton

Google
The service, drinks, and food here are great! I wish I could remember our servers name last night. She was friendly, funny, fast and efficient. She checked in on us often and made sure we have everything we needed! The BLT and tator tots were amazing! Their wings- blowing. We will continue to come back!

Steven James

Google
Food was great. Got the grilled chicken sandwich. Server was ok. Had to repeat what drink I what drink I wanted. No big deal. Atmosphere, it wasn't what I expected... Nice just wasn't for me and my date... Plus it was game night soooo, yeah.

Coleman Reed

Google
The food and atmosphere were great, but it took an unusually long time for any server to come by and drop off our bills so we could pay. This was generally would not be an issue. With that sad, I was out to lunch with my coworkers in the middle of a workday, so time was at a bit of a premium since we had to get back to work.

Yelp
We were told about the Peanut. We read about the wings. People raved about it. Well, tonight we tried it. Wow!!! These are the best wings my wife and I have ever had! Buffalo wing perfection! We had them in Buffalo this summer and these wings are WAY better!! The Peanut burger was absolutely delicious!! Wow! Wing sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion and blue cheese crumbles. It goes so well with the wings!! The Triple BLT was outstanding!! We will be back for sure. Our amazing server, Madison, got us out on time for a concert. She works Tuesday and Sunday. Ask for her. She's brilliant! We loved the vibe here. They have booths, high tops and tables. The Peanut is epic!

Yelp
Went for lunch. The restaurant was quite busy but the service was exceptional. Food was great. Waitress was quick with the refills (my pet peeve). I would recommend. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Has outdoor seating available. Service was good and busy! Have had better burgers elsewhere. It was served on TX toast and there was a lot bread for the burger and the pub chips had a burnt flavor. The southwest eggrolls were delicious

Yelp
I know it's a Kansas City institution. However, this is NOT the original Peanut, and it never will be...to me, it will always be the Peanut in Kansas. The food is traditional bar fare with nothing too exciting on the menu. So, unless you're here for the famous wings, there isn't much to look at. If you are a visitor from out of town, then please take my advice and visit one of the other locations, either the OG on 51st and Main or the divest one downtown. Now, call me crazy but I'm a boneless wings girl, so the thought (and site) of full on (and I do mean FULL) chicken wings slathered in a neon red hued sauce isn't on my list of things to order. So, this Peanut at least has a larger menu than some of the other locations, meaning you can order sandwiches and such and aren't limited to wings and nachos. But, when in doubt, the nachos will always do and go great with a beer. My overall rating is lower for this location just because the history just isn't there. It isn't "divey" enough, it's just too clean (haha) but also, it's a lot more spacious than the other locations so it just doesn't feel intimate enough for a neighborhood bar. This Peanut is more family friendly, though, so if that's what you're into, then this might be the *restaurant* (notably not bar) for you.

Yelp
I love the wings at the Peanut! I am so glad I discovered this location. It's much bigger and faster than the Main location. The Peanut on Main takes there phone off the hook. This Peanut was fast and awesome service.

Yelp
I changed my rating from 4 to 5 based upon LOCATION! Most of my previous experiences occurred at the Metcalf location. The Peanut in Mission is LIT!!! So much fun! Big crowds, fun patrons, bulletproof waitresses, sparkling clean facilities(despite the size), makes this location stand apart from the others. And to top it all off their craft beer offerings, and their food coming out of the kitchen makes this the best sports bar in Kansas City

Yelp
This is the best place to feed Life here is great Lots of hot chickd and french fries

Yelp
Visited the Peanut tonight for our book club meeting. Probably not the best choice for book discussion lol because this place was hoppin! Super busy, fun atmosphere. Definitely a good spot to hang out with friends and watch some sports on the many TVs throughout the business. We ordered several starters, mini corn dogs with honey mustard, delicious; friend pickles with ranch, even more delicious; and chips and queso. I ordered the taco salad for my main entree. It was good! A little spicy! I also ordered the apple aperol spritz, it was so good I had to have 2!
google avatar

Yelp
Loved the environment, was the perfect place to have a group of friends out to have fun and watch a game! The service was phenomenal, our server was so nice and made sure we were taken care of! The appetizers were delish, my favorite were the fried pickles and mini corn dogs, love my fried food!
google avatar

Yelp
The wings are the best! I got the classic buffalo and they were tangy and rich! Great flavor along with the crispy whole wings! Definitely need a lot of napkins!

Winston H.

Yelp
Wings were amazing as always. I hadn't been here in 20 years prior to this and will definitely be changing that.

Yelp
Among all the joints in this specific strip mall, The Peanut is the premiere chub n tuck + domestics vibes for the big game. Just watch out for any rogue emoters! They get a little excited on those key plays in the 2nd qtr--LOL. My group ordered a pail of domestics, a round of waters, and a few tasty plates. Plate 1 consisted of salty snetzel bites. They were log shaped and awesome. I cannot speak for the flavor, I was still full from the local sub sandwich I picked up for lunch (did I mention I'm a foodie XD). Numero uno included 2 dips which I believe were mix and match. My buddy selected cheese and dijon. The look and texture of the dijon reminded me of a recent surprise encounter I had with Jayhawk butter. I'll save that story for another time. Let's get to plate 2. Plate 2 was the carb flight. They gave it some quirky clever name like "Appetizer Combo." This one also included sauces--3 of them believe it or not. Dealers choice on those swawses. I was relieved to see that Plate 2 had some chicken on it. I worry about my friends not getting enough protein so that was nice to see. Although later my buddy gave me that look. Like his tummy was doing tricks. All good though. Plate 3 was a super sized take on the classic turkey pinwheel. So they took a pinwheel and kinda expanded it and added girth by using a full tortilla instead of cutting it first. Genius! Add a little bacon and you got any bronco bucking. I enjoyed my water but I sorta feared that maybe their ice machine has mold in it because I recently saw an IG reel with ice machine mold. Yeah at one point an ice cube was crawling its way into the opening of a domestic. You know how they have to do that thing where they open the can so that people are too scared to leave it undranken? Kinda scared me to think of that cube as a bug or something crawling into the poor brew.. This review is looking pretty epic Yelp tells me! Nice!

Yelp
Great service and awesome wings! I will be back. Great place to watch College Football

Yelp
I had some okay mac and cheese and some very good onion rings for takeout here the other night. Not too busy at all when I went on a Tuesday evening, it was spacious and open, with classic wood bar furniture and a huge long bar that took up the entire long side of the room with TVs over it. The bartender took my carryout order and I waited at the bar for it to come out. It did not take a long time at all. I can imagine this place could easily be a casual evening in Mission, or to watch a sports game with a large group of friends. Solid food options.

Yelp
My name is Amanda and I review nachos. Order: Carnitas Nachos, Half Order Menu Description: Pulled pork, queso, tomatoes, green onions, sour cream, black olives & queso fresco $15.00 full order; $11.50 half order. Style: Nacho pile Initial impressions: Generous sour cream dollop; dinner plate size portion; lots of sliced black olives. Didn't look like much. Flavor: Surprisingly flavorful! Certainly salt-forward, from the meat, olives, and cheese. The tomatoes were the only bit of freshness. The meat, which was allegedly carnitas, would be more aptly described as bbq style pulled pork without the bbq sauce. It was tender and delicious though. No real complaints there. The queso - classic orange cheese, rotel-style. If you're in the mood for nacho cheese, it hits the mark. I tend to prefer white cheese, espinaca style. Spice: Zero. The sad salsa has a tiny bit, but it's not particularly good. Texture: Chips are crisp enough to hold up to the first several minutes. They get deliciously soggy toward the end, and for some reason I love it. How to achieve the perfect bite: Take a chip from the edge that's half-covered with queso, and use a fork to meticulously extract a little bit of each ingredient on top. Fold in half, drool, indulge. Portion Size: A half order was about right for a high-hunger meal. tl;dr: As far as bar nachos go, these are a solid choice for a nice evening on the patio.

Yelp
Beware.....if your sitting at the bar check your receipt closely because the bartenders add drinks to your order that you did not have. It has happen to me many times. This is happening mainly in the evening going into the night. Bartenders do better this is bad business to over charge customers. The food is good at The Peanuts on Martway in Shawnee but adding drinks to my order I did not have is just badddd business.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great staff, and damn good decent bar food! I would recommend if you want to watch a game or just want to go with friends and family.

Yelp
I've been to many a peanut but never this location. 2 pm on a Saturday and it was hopping!!! Got a table inside and ordered my usual BLT which never disappoints. Lots of bacon, perfectly toasted bread, fresh tomatos. So good. Got a side of ranch for muly fries because the ketchup is cheap, nasty stuff that is completely inedible.
google avatar

Dina B.

Yelp
Gave the wings another try Beige mushy fries were served, they redid them Okay, why did I have to ask for my fries to be crispy and golden? Do people eat mushy fries? Undercooked flabby beige wings, again, why? Wings have connective tissue that needs to be cooked for a while, like all working joints on any animal. Beige chicken skin is an insult to the bird who gave its life to become food. Wings that cannot be torn into pieces are underdone Appalling Am I the only one who is insulted by poorly made food? $28 for 3 inedible wings, some fries and a beer. I tipped 20%, she didn't cook the food Could have purchased a nice ribeye and eaten in Lesson learned
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
Not sure how anyone could give these wings less than a 5. 10/10 all the time if you live Buffalo wings. That's all. The end.
google avatar

Natalie L.

Yelp
The peanut wings can't be beat. The management and service is always fantastic even when it is a full house. The atmoshphere is easygoing and fun. Music bingo on Wednesdays is a must!
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
Great service, limp drinks... guess they need to save the gin. Had the Cuban... dry, dry, dry. Do they even know what a Cuban tastes like? Ample portions though.

Kyle G.

Yelp
Great food and prices, been multiple times. Lots of TVs for games. Highly recommend their salads or wraps if your not in the mood for wings!

Nick V.

Yelp
I have had the chicken wings and BLT sandwich. Both were delicious. My grandkids loved the wings and fries.

Yelp
This location has become one of my favorite spots to watch sports when I don't feel like watching them at home and the reason is, not to bag on other locations, is how clean and comfortable it is. There are plenty of tvs, the tables are decently spread out so I don't feel like I'm in somebody's conversation and also, as a larger gentleman, don't feel like I'm going to hip check somebody as I walk past them. Most importantly, my shoes don't stick to the floor when I walk across the dining room. Add in modern, clean and well kept bathrooms and we have a winner. I know what I just wrote sounds like a backhanded compliment, but trust me, it's not. I really enjoy this place. The food at this location is just like the food at the other locations. That means that the wings are still among the best in town and the Triple BLT will hit you in your gut. They offer up a solid and diverse beer list and a fully stocked bar if you're thinking of something a little stronger. If your game starts a little early on Saturday or Sunday they serve brunch too.

Yelp
I really wanted this place to taste good bc downtown location is great. But it just wasn't good lol. I got the chili and it was really chunky and just tasted a bit strange. Also the chicken taqueria appetizer was bland. Maybe they're only good for their wings? ‍ I'd go back though.

Dad S.

Yelp
Great bar for getting something to eat. Food is good and great staff. Good sports bar.

John D.

Yelp
I like coming here but recently got sticker shock.... They want $10 for a CUP not a bowl of chili. Sorry but that's over the top. It's good but not worth that much. I'm tired of places pushing the envelope on price points. At some point there will be a backlash and people will push back. I guess I am.

Yelp
If I was rating The Peanut solely for its qualities as a bar, I would give it four stars. Unfortunately I'm not and the food quality knocks it down a notch for me. Mind you, I'm a vegetarian, so I'm not rating them on their well-known dishes such as wings, but rather their veggie burger. I'll start by saying that our service here was good. The atmosphere is fun... but the food is lacking. I ordered the veggie burger ($9). I wasn't expecting much but somehow this was actually less than that. It's pretty much a tasteless patty served with lettuce, tomato, and pickle, topped with mayo. It was edible but on a scale of best veggie burgers rated 1 (the worst) to 10 (the best), this was maaaaybe a 3-4. The tater tots I got with it were average bar food tots. Side note, the spinach/artichoke dip ($9) we had as an appetizer was decent. I guess the next time I come back here, I'll opt to watch sports, drink beer, and stick with apps and sides.

Yelp
My go to place for wings! I love how there are several Peanuts all over Kansas/Missouri. I have had the chance to try other stuff on the menu and still the wings there is my go to. The chili cheese fries is delicious as well with the wings. I would say the wings take awhile for them to make but it is so worth it.
google avatar

Ricky S.

Yelp
Great place for sports viewing. Seats situated with tv's on both sides. Will change channel on request. Had the taco salads which were very good & plenty of meat. Water glasses were kept full and very atentative staff. Atmosphere is family oriented and spacing excellent between tables. Highly recommend.

Andrew B.

Yelp
I had an online pickup order for a Taco Salad and 3 Wings + chili cheese tots..We received a BLT and Chicken Tenders...how does this happen? Please make this right.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and the bird bomb is the best chicken sandwich in KC! Great drink specials, good food and lots of space.

Jimmy N.

Yelp
A KC classic. It's a sportsbar and the Buffalo wings are the focus and they deliver. Portion for $15 for wings is good cause the wings are large.
google avatar

Jake Z.

Yelp
Best wings in KC!!! Beware that the wings come as full wings with drumette, wingette, and tip combined. So 1 wing equals 2 at other places. They also only come in buffalo or naked.

Debbie M.

Yelp
First time visiting this location, went to the bar to order a quick wrap. Waited at the bar for ten minutes, an orange haired bartender walked right past my husband and I and took care of someone who walked in way after us, then did it again, the other bartender was just standing behind the bar drinking redbull. Decided to move to a table since we weren't getting served at the bar, the server took another 10 minutes to greet us. Around 30 minutes total before we could even place an order lol and i understand places being under staffed but there were only two other couples at the bar and as i mentioned earlier the one was just standing around being lazy. definitely never coming back to this location ever again. The food was great and the server was friendly once she arrived, but then after being done with our food we waited another 15 minutes to close out... after flagging her down.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
If you've lived in Kansas City for any amount of time you have likely already heard of The Peanut, or have even visited. They have like 5 locations throughout the KC area, and I've personally been to 4 of them. I would say this location is most comparable to the Downtown Overland Park location in size and decor. I'll break down the different parts of the restaurant in my review. Decor: Walking inside, you get the classic sports bar vibe, lots of memorabilia on the walls, more TV's than most people find necessary, and either music or sports playing over the speakers. Lots of seating variety, mostly booths and regular tables, with a few hightop tables and seating available at the bar. Drinks: They have a full bar with a surprisingly good rotating draft list. Every time I come here they have a new beer that I've never tried before on tap, which is very nice. I haven't had a mixed drink or wine from here before so can't comment on the quality of those. Food: Classic American bar fare. They are most known for their buffalo wings here, which unlike most wing places, are the whole wing fully intact. These things are huge, usually only requiring 3-6 to make you stuffed, and they are some of the best in the city. I've had several other items from the menu, and it was all good, especially their side order of Mac n' Cheese. Atmosphere: If you want to watch local sports with a load of other rabid fans, then this is your kind of place. Be sure to arrive early for the bigger games, cause this place will definitely fill up. Conclusion: If you like the classic American sports bar venue, then look no farther than The Peanut. Or, if you just enjoy really good buffalo wings and some good craft beer this place will also fill that niche.

Yelp
Huge wings! And they will serve them naked my favorite way. They were perfectly fried. They do it right in the sense not only perfectly cooked but they cook the entire wing. They also do not skimp on the blue cheese and celery . Lots of local brews on the menu as well as the typical bar food. It is a very spacious venue.
google avatar

Karen P.

Yelp
Good food, good drinks, good service. Very loud- but it's a sports bar essentially- you're not going here for intimate conversation. Try the BLT and the spinach artichoke dip. A friend recommended the cherry limeade made with cherry vodka, and it was indeed delicious. This is the perfect after work spot to grab a drink or dinner and watch the Royals, or any other game because there's tons of tv's here.
google avatar

Bobby M.

Yelp
Out of town visitor. Heard about the wings and was not disappointed. Really meaty and not over slathered in sauce. Had a salad along with them. I look forward to visiting again and trying other items on the menu.

Tomato R.

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood hangout, great food, great service! The wings are KC's BEST!

Yelp
St Patrick's day brunch in KC! The Peanut was the perfect place to start!! I have food allergies and they were so nice about my order and it was delicious! Bloody Mary's were spot on! Amanda was our waitress and she is fabulous! You guys ROCK!

Yelp
WINGS!!! If you have never been to a Peanut before, I highly recommend the wings as they are hands down the best in KC. Their signature items are their BLT and their wings, but skip the sandwich and go for wings. The wings are huge, not your standard wings, these are served with leg and wing attached as one. A dozen wings can definitely feed 2 people. They do have a few other sauces, but regular buffalo is what you need. If you want your wing a little crispier, ask to have them double dipped, meaning they will fry them, toss them, then fry again one more time. If you want them saucier, ask for them sloppy. If wanting an appetizer, I would recommend the buffalo dip, which is served with chips but you can ask to switch out with carrots and celery if you choose. All their food is priced well considering portions you get. Outside food, this location always has a great craft beer draft list, and cheap domestics. The Peanut has a handful of locations across KC, each giving different atmosphere from complete dive bar, to nicer sports bar. This location is one of their newer locations, with tons of seating, and a small outdoor patio. They have flat screen TVs covering every wall of this bar making it a great location to watch sports games, one of my go-tos, Highly recommend to any wing lover or someone looking for a good sports bar.

Yelp
I ordered a burger. Server: "fries?" Me:"yes" not realizing it was an additional $2 for fries with a burger. Hubby's fish was good. Not too much breading.
google avatar

Christine V.

Yelp
I've been here twice in the last month. I trusted it enough to bring out of down friends for food late night. Good food, good service and reasonable prices!
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Good bar food and usually a good selection of draft beer. Wings, club sandwich with sweet potato fries and a couple of IPAs. All good. It was nice to enjoy while watching the US women beat France in the Women's World Cup on the numerous TVs. Good spot, good food and great beverages.
google avatar

Madalyn J.

Yelp
KC was great until we got to Peanuts. The bartender didn't welcome us at all and pretty much told us to get out. And it smelled like farts. I gagged. Pretty sad that someone that is in hospitality acts like that. Don't go unless you want a rude person to not welcome you. And if you want a place that smells like fart.
google avatar

Yelp
What a place. It's not every day that you can drive around at 11:00 PM and find a place that not only serves food, but serves GOOD food. We called ahead of time to make sure we could chow down, and when we heard we could we were there within 10 minutes! Located right across from the old Mission Bowl, it's honestly a prime spot, not too crowded, but easy to find. We got carded when we got there, but that was no biggie. We went up to the bar and ordered the California Chicken Sandwich and the Wings. The sandwich was super yummy and the wings were H U G E. I mean gigantic. very worth it in my opinion. Probably the best part of the place was our bartender. He was a very nice guy and was super helpful when it came to the menu and just general info about the place. At the end of the night my boyfriend spilled his beer (typical) and he just gave it to us for free! We would have been more than willing to pay for it but he didn't even give us a choice. Just an overall nice guy and cool place that I had never visited. I will be recommending it and returning!

Yelp
I ordered the lunch special with a garden salad and 2 BLT sliders and such quality, good tasting food!!! Plus, it only cost $8! Sometimes bar and grill food is ehhh but not at The Peanut!! The ranch was creamy and runny, my favorite. The BLT had thick bacon. It was the perfect portion size for a lunch.
