As a fried chicken lover, I wanted to be sure to visit The Pecking Order while I was on Sanibel. Doing so proved a bit difficult. The first day I went, I checked times on their website - which said they were open - but after driving 1/2 hour from the other end of the island, a paper sign on the door said they were closed. So we went to lunch elsewhere. The next day I distrusted their website and called their phone when they were supposed to be open, but there was no answer and no message. So I again made plans to eat elsewhere. Then, as I drove past on the way to that meal I saw they were in fact open - so in I went.
The interior is just a counter, with no indoor seating. There are a few chairs at a bench just outside, which was space enough for me to eat as it was not a busy time.
The menu is simple - fried chicken in many configurations, a good range of southern sides and a few desserts. The store also has a wide range of interesting sauces in giant containers for dipping and added flavour. Most of them were spicy.
Service was prompt and friendly - with my order delivered only a few minutes after I placed it. Service is only in to-go containers, even if you sit at the bench outside.
The chicken pieces here are very large compared to most other fried chicken places. I ordered 3 pieces, but even two would have been more than I could have eaten. The meat was moist and tender, but the breading was a little bland for my taste. I ordered a side of fries, but sadly they were not fresh cut and were just fine but nothing special.
Overall, this was a decent experience but not amazing. I might try this place again if I was back on Sanibel, but it wouldn't be top of my list.
