The 11 Best Coffee Shops In Downtown Austin

"With an incredible view of Town Lake from its patio, The Perch is an under-the-radar refuge very close to the Convention Center in the Waller Creek Boathouse. On a nice day, the dog-friendly deck is a fantastic place to be (just know it can get busier on weekends). Go before or after renting a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard, and get an avocado toast while pretending you’re one of the fit people who row on Town Lake every day. The food menu is broad, and there are very good coffee drinks, smoothies, beer, and wine. During the week it’s pretty work-friendly—there are only a couple of tables indoors, but the deck has outlets." - raphael brion, nicolai mccrary

Escape SXSW Like a Local in Austin

"Very few SXSW attendees (let alone locals) know about The Perch, a semi-hidden spot that’s literally a block from the Convention Center in the Waller Creek Boathouse. With an incredible view of Town Lake, the dog-friendly patio is a fantastic place to be—it even has plenty of outlets if you need to get some work done. The food menu is broad: breakfast tacos, avocado toast, cheese boards, salads, and sandwiches. To drink, there are smoothies, beer (and beer flights), wine, and very good coffee. Google
The great place right next to the waters with great view. Lot of out seating available. Very nice place to hangout with friends or work there. The coffee is great and the staff is very friendly. The place has great vibe and I will return again to try few food items. Street Parking is bit far.

June 2024 After a long walk on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake it was refreshing to see a place to get out of the heat and order a cold drink. It's a coffee shop with drinks and some food items to purchase and sit on a deck facing the lake. The girls working here seem to really enjoy their job where they were dancing to the tunes playing. I ordered an iced green tea and and sat on the deck. It's very dog friendly and great place to work. I thought it was very cool and had a nice vibrant atmosphere.

Amazing coffee shop on the bike and bike trail. Plenty of outdoor seating overlooking the lake. The downside is that there’s no indoor seating and no parking.

Google
Nice baristas. They take cash and card. Easy to get to on foot from the rail station. Drink your greens Smoothie was $10 and tasty so prices aren’t bad. Lots of seating and it’s covered mostly. I would come again

Google
A hidden gem in Austin. Not because it's really that hidden (it's very obvious), but because it has a wonderful vibe right on the water but is never overly crowded. It's a fantastic place to just sit outside and enjoy the views/weather.

Google
Such a pretty place, and perfect for relaxing or hanging out. It does get pretty busy and the lines are long but the service is good! The food isn’t anything crazy but it’s good! Definitely recommend if you haven’t visited yet!

My wife and I stopped here to grab some drinks in the morning and we’re presently surprise. She ordered an almond candy, iced coffee and we ordered a strawberry banana smoothie. She enjoyed her iced coffee and the strawberry banana smoothie was very good. You can also sit outside on their deck and enjoy the view and outdoors with some shade and a slight breeze.

I’m not usually a coffee shop girl, but let me tell you this place ROCKS. They play great music, and have a spacious deck with waterfront views. String lights, cute yellow umbrellas, the ambiance is there! Staff is also super sweet. Best of all, they have an absolutely amazing drink selection. Smoothies, Energy Drinks, Coffee, Even Beer! Love the Perch, Vibe- 5/5 stars✨🙌🏼

Yelp
This place is pretty cool. Conveniently located right off the Ann and Roy Butler trail, it's just the thing to refuel on your hike or bike. The menu is small, I tried their matcha. I wouldn't get that again but their lemonade, avocado toast and turkey wrap hit the spot. The workers were friendly but overwhelmed and I waited a while for both drinks. There wasn't any seating inside, your order in and eat out on the patio.

Yelp
Was disappointed that the only thing they had on their whole menu available was the avocado toast. It was very good. Nice flavor and pumpkin seeds added nice texture. A bit over priced for 1 piece of toast. The Berry hibiscus tea was refreshing with the cane syrup. Service was somewhat polite. Was made to feel dumb for our questions asked. Only outdoor seating however a nice breeze was blowing and lots of umbrellas. 4 star for the views and access to the walking trail. Won't be back.

Yelp
Took my dogs here for an outing and found it to be a really nice spot. It was a hot summer day but the shades and fans made it somewhat bearable to sit outside. Nice view of the lake although I thought it was more overlooking the water. There were water bowls for dogs and cups for water for humans in the shop. The drinks were reasonably priced too. The bathrooms are outdoors and public bathrooms so not exactly the nicest but convenient. I don't think there were any indoor seats which would've been nice. There's some street parking on the street leading to it and we went on Sunday so that ended up being free!

Yelp
I stopped here while walking the lake for a quick bite. I do get the appeal, it's "healthy" & quick but I hate to say I wasn't impressed. My sandwich meat tasted rather fake and the smoothie was just okay. It feels fake fresh, which I get it.. it's a small cafe and I don't think they need to provide great quality food. I can see the appeal of stopping by while you're down by the water. If I were to go back it would just be to enjoy a beer on the patio.

Yelp
The Perch is a hidden gem tucked between Lady Bird and the Four Seasons. If you ever visited the location back when it was Alta's Cafe, you'll find that Perch has a much more elevated experience with solid shade coverage on the patio equipped with cooling fans and they have live music, as well as trivia. In addition to the solid service, this is a great spot to perch-ase a coffee, light bite and/or beer & wine. Definitely can see myself perched here while knocking out some work with a view of the water or popping in after a stand-up paddleboard sesh. ‍

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL location on Lady Bird with all outdoor seating. Service wasn't so great, hence the star knockdown. Came for just a draft beer. Dog friendly patio, but they are not allowed inside at all, even to order. Restrooms are ran by the city, so anyone can go in. SUPER DISGUSTING. So hold it :)

Yelp
This was my first time here. I was with a walking group, and this was the perfect stop to rest and refuel, bonus that they allow dogs on the patio. They even provide stainless steel dog bowls and water. The staff was very kind, and even refilled my dogs' water bottle. The view of the lake from the patio was lovely, and there was a lot of seating, with either a rooftop or umbrellas to provide shade. Being lactose intolerant, I appreciated the fact that their smoothies are all vegan. I had the hydraberry blast. It was delicious and refreshing. I have never had avocado in a smoothie, but you couldn't taste. It just made the smoothie creamy. I heard good things from the other group members about the tacos and coffee, and I will definitely come here again when I am in the area.

Yelp
I asked a hostess working in the Domain for the best coffee in Austin: The Perch. Drove 30 minutes to get here this morning and Madi made me a wonderful cortado. I'm visiting from Seattle so our coffee standards are very high and she made this perfectly for me. Much appreciated. Thanks!

Yelp
This place was great! The lavender, lemonade, matcha was actually to die for. I will dream about that match Taking off 1 star because it took me legit 20 minutes to find a parking spot since they don't have anywhere to park

Yelp
Highly recommend Julia's Longhorn Latte, cowboy cold style! Great cooldown for this hot TX heat!

Yelp
There is a lot to love about this spot, however I was pretty bummed at my first and only visit so far. I'm not sure where you are supposed to park, but I got lucky with a paid parking spot just outside the entrance and had a very short walk over. When I walked in, it seemed as though the staff was having some kind of deep conversation, maybe even a meeting, and didn't really even greet me when I walked in. They actually did they opposite, the left the room and continued chatting in the next room Over. That would have been fine except there was no one behind the counter. I waited for at least two minutes with no help and decided I would just go outside and set up my computer and get some work done and then come back in when someone was back behind the counter. I was one of the only customers there, the place is really hidden, adorable, and the view makes you feel like you are somewhere else... maybe somewhere camping or at a cottage over a little river or something... super adorable. I didn't take any photos at all, it seems... I think I was still stunned at the lack of anyone wanting to help me. I didn't end up having any coffee or anything to drink. I grabbed a cookie but it seemed dried out and wasn't as great as I wanted it to be. I will most definitely go back because it was a great spot to work and feel relaxed all at the same time. . I just hope the service is better next time. I will most definitely update my review at that time!

Yelp
Pretty good! Had a plain bagel with cream cheese and a PBJ smoothie. Would definitely go back for a bagel! Yum!

Christina G.

Yelp
Ordered smoothies and matcha and delicious! Rise and Grind with an extra shot of espresso...yummmm!

Yelp
Not impress with the service here. Waited 20 minutes for a Panini and it wasn't busy at all. Workers behind the counter were talking and eating while we waited for our food. The Panini actually had a good taste and was hot, but the service was very poor.

Marlene A.

Yelp
Loved my latte and bagel. The view is very nice and the ambiance is perfect for your morning coffee. The lady who took my order could've been friendlier, no smile or good morning at all. Other than that, everything was good. Walking distance from my airbnb.

Yelp
I came with friends to use the Austin Coffee passport. Luckily there was free street parking on Saturday until 11 am. There are only 3 taco flavors and I tried two of them which were good but were $4.50 each which seems expensive for a breakfast taco. My friend got the strawberry pop tart for us to try, which was really good. I got an iced lavender latte, which was good. The view of the lake is nice but all the seating is outside and in the summer it gets hot. I didn't notice any fans (at least in the section we sat at), which is rough in ATX. It's also next to a (rowing) gym so the clientele is a lot of people coming from or going to a class, so that impacts the vibe a bit. But the music was good. Location and vibes aren't enough to get me to come back because there are just too many other options that I like more.

Yelp
Great coffee and vibes! The staff was so friendly. Located right in downtown. They have the best views!

Yelp
Just a walk from Rainey street, you can get a view of lady bird lake, rent a kayak, get a beer, coffee, or wine. Good place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Austin. The service was quick and super friendly! I got the lavender latte and it's a must!

Annika S.

Yelp
Went to The Perch for a quick coffee and snack and it did not disappoint! I had a yummy iced vanilla latte and their zucchini bread was also amazing! There is a cute patio overlooking the river where you can sit and enjoy your drink! Would definitely recommend!

Nate M.

Yelp
If it wasn't for the location, I wouldn't come back here. Coffee was good, the only food available was a bagel which was average. The staff also wasn't the most friendly. Sitting outside and getting to have the view on the water is the best part.
