Where to Eat and Drink in Chicago When It Rains | Eater Chicago

"Located about a mile from Wrigley Field — Cubs fans can take the complementary shuttle if they don’t feel like walking — the Piggery, true to its name, specializes in things that are porky, notably ribs and Cuban sandwiches. Its cheerful, partially-covered rooftop bar overlooks Irving Park Road, and it has plenty of TVs so no one has to choose between sports and fresh air." - Eater Staff

Where to Drink Outdoors in Lincoln Park and Lakeview | Eater Chicago

"The Piggery boasts a rooftop with its own bar decorated with multicolored lights plus a patio with a fire pit and umbrella-topped tables. Both spaces offer plenty of TVs so visitors can watch sports while taking advantage of bottomless mimosas during weekend brunch or the extensive draft beer list while digging into a Cuban sandwich or a slab of ribs." - Sam Nelson

I had The Piggery saved on my list of places to go largely because of how promising the upstairs patio looked the few times I had driven by previously Apparently the patio is for 21 years and and older only, if you have kids with you (like I did) you can't go up there. Huge bummer. Labeled as a "hamburger restaurant" by Google. I would probably just call it a bar since the menu has just two hamburgers on it. Tina was our waitress and she was very friendly. She was assisted by two other workers that were also very nice. They consistently checked on us. We started our dining experience by ordering the Buffalo Chicken Firecrackers only to be told 5 minutes later that they were out of those. Another bummer. My family tried a Pulled Pork sandwich, a Kansas Smash Burger, and a small pizza for my son. The pulled pork was acceptable, but nothing special. Put on a hearty sized bun and topped with slaw and pickles. It was initially very good at the beginning before I got tired of the taste about halfway through. The fries served with the sandwich I thought were very enjoyable. The Smash Burger had a very nice flavor profile from the little bit that I had. This was far and away better than the pork. In all fairness and honesty, our choice to dine here was almost entirely centered around dining on the patio upstairs. If we had known in advance that we wouldn't have been allowed up there because of my son, we likely would've picked another place for dinner. The firecrackers shortage all but cemented that 4 stars would be the highest I would rate The Piggery if everything else went well. While I liked the way the bar was decorated with colorful string lights, the food wasn't outstanding. Which makes the 3 stars I award seem very fair to me. I may visit again and try the ribs, but I'm not interested in dining in the bar again, I can dine in a bar or tavern just about anywhere. By deduction, that means I'd probably have to wait until my son turns 21 to come back.

Google
Had the rack of ribs that were excellent not to fond of the coleslaw but their potatoes were delicious. Our server was excellent and friendly and quick with our order. For desert had the Brownie Ala Mode which was a little dry

Google
Ordered delivery from this place and it was a mixed bag. On the one hand the Ribs and Pulled Pork Sandwich were wonderful, on the other hand the sides were raging between fine (baked beans) to bad (green beans), but the wings were the worst I have ever had... ever! If you feel like you must try this place, go for the ribs and pulled pork and avoid the chicken wings.

We went here prior to heading to the Cubs game. Three of us had breakfast entrees and loved them. Big portions. I had the pork egg rolls. I asked for salsa on the side. These egg rolls were loaded with pulled pork. The green salsa was delicious and they also had a side of a sweet sauce that had kick to it too. I loved it. I can't recommend this enough. The owner came by and said if we are going to the Cubs game he gives free shuttles every half hour. We loved it! We also went up to the rooftop area as we had time prior to the shuttle. It is amazing. Bartenders super nice and efficient. They were setting up a buffet for a private wedding Bachelorette party. Everyone here is so nice. It's clean as can be and if I lived in this area I would make this a regular favorite spot. I bet it's fun at night too with all of the lights on the rooftop patio. Prices are all very reasonable. Go enjoy! I included some photos in this review also. UPDATE: June 2024. We returned here for an early lunch prior to the Cubs game. We spent time on the upstairs deck until our shuttle was ready to bring us to Wrigley. I have attached more pictures of today's meals. We had the same waitress as we had one year ago which was great and makes us realize that it must be a great place to work also.

The first time I came here was with my brothers — it wasn’t even planned. But the food impressed us so much that I’ve already been back four times! I’ve tried the Kansas smashed burger, steak sandwich, and chicken wrap — everything has been excellent. I even brought my girlfriend, and she loved it too.

Google
Food was delicious, had the carnitas nachos and mac and cheese. Food came out quickly. For a restaurant/bar on a Friday night, it was easy to have conversations across the table and enjoyed good music. Would recommend.

I came here with the family today after church and thoroughly enjoyed all of the food here!! This is a great spot to watch football and enjoy some amazing BBQ !!! 👏🏼 😁 I will definitely be back here soon !!

Google
We happened upon this place on a Sunday afternoon and it really surprised us. Really good food and great atmosphere. The service was a little slow, but I think we were there at shift change. They have a great smash burger and an awesome hot honey chicken sandwich! We will definitely go back!

Yelp
Best place ever!! The women here are amaze balls. Good food. Staff excellent . GreT tvs.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here for dinner on a Saturday night and spent $200. The drinks were decent, the appetizers average at best, and the food was atrocious. My pulled pork tasted dry, plain, and not what you would imagine pull pork tasting like. The only thing yummy was the house salad. Also we were seated in the pathway of the men's restroom, and our table was knocked into about 15x times, spilling drinks and utensils. - Jonathan

Yelp
I think I chose the wrong sandwich on the wrong day. I ordered a club sandwich and fries, both of which felt greasy. The menu here is loaded with impressive options, I'd easily come back to try something else. The staff was friendly and quick as well. Cheers.

Yelp
Came here for the first time about a week ago with family, and I had a pretty good experience. When we walked in, the hostess told us to sit anywhere we wanted. We sat at a high top table, and our waitress came soon after. I wish I knew this place had an outdoor patio on the roof because I would have loved to sit up there; however, it was so hot the day we came, and we were sweaty from a Cubs game, so I guess it worked out that we didn't know about it anyway. The Piggery has a dive bar feeling inside with tvs everywhere and wooden furniture. There are string lights around the dining room, and the bar itself has many different taps. The restaurant was also clean when we were here, and it's obvious that the workers care about how the place looks. The menu isn't extensive, but there is a decent variety. They offer different bbq pork dishes, as well as entrées like tacos, salads, mac and cheese, and burgers. I ordered the tacos ($12.99), which were pretty good but not very filling. They were mix and match any 3, which I liked because I ordered two steak and one chicken tinga. The flavor was good, and both the chicken and steak were well-seasoned and cooked, but the tacos came with no side, and they didn't even double shell the corn tortillas. Consequently, while I was eating them, the tortilla broke, so all the filling constantly fell out. For an appetizer, our family shared the buffalo wings ($15.99 for 10) and the cheese curds ($11.99). The buffalo wings tasted like the generic normal buffalo wing, so there was nothing unique to them, but they were cooked perfectly and still tasted good. I honestly loved the cheese curds more because of their perfect balance of a crispy exterior with the soft, cheesy interior. They were delicious! When it came to service, our waitress was attentive and friendly. It was decently busy, and yet she consistently checked in on us. She was also the bartender and still found the time to help us. Good customer service is rare nowadays in restaurants, so we were very thankful for her! Overall, I'd come here again, but I want to take a look at the patio and also try some different menu options.

Yelp
We asked to be seated on the second floor outdoor patio. Cozy and chill atmosphere, with great service. The drinks were refreshing and the food was really good! Overall, it was a great way to spend a Saturday evening with my hubby, enjoy a breeze and some goodies.

Yelp
Decided to stop in for lunch and discovered that they had a Sunday brunch menu. I ordered the sausage breakfast sandwhich. It was served on a croissant. It was hard to hold like a sandwhich so I cut it. The sausage tasted just like the sausage you would get on a pizza. The Pico on top had a lot of onions in it. (More than I would have preferred). Served with a side of hash browns. (It was a small serving). They had cold brew coffee which was delicious. My friend's order was incorrect, but he just rolled with it. To me it was only ok.

Yelp
Had a great time tonight. Burger excellent, our server did it all and didn't miss a beat.

Yelp
I ordered from Uber eats last night, haven't had their food in a while! I got the chicken and waffle slider along with the pulled pork slider... and just LOL WOW Who puts grilled chicken with waffles? Even the image shown upon ordering... the chicken was as golden and crispy as the waffle should've been! It was a waste of money, I ended up ordering mc Donald's. My girlfriend's ribs were burnt. The Mac and cheese was the only thing worth eating as long as you throw some hot sauce on it! The cheese churds and fries were fried with old oil. We felt sick. The salty fries I had hours later at mc Donald's were worth the extra spending we had to do. I'll never eat here again, not worth blowing over $55. Not worth a dime here unless someone's treating you for a drink.

Samantha A.

Yelp
Yes, you should listen to the bad reviews. Pulled pork is not good. The cheeseburger slider is a joke. The mac & cheese is flavorless. The fries are ok. Superbowl ruined.

Yelp
This was my first time at the piggery. We sat upstairs which is decorated super cute and has good vibes. The only downside was how bad the flies were. They were constantly on our food or crawling on us. The burger and chicken tenders were good. We would skip the frose and just get a cocktail or beer.
google avatar

Yelp
The pulled pork is phenomenal! We're from Texas y'all so we know what we're talking about! My kids adored all the Christmas displays and Chelsea was especially wonderful! Delicious food and fun atmosphere for our whole family.

Yelp
Came on a Tuesday night and had a taco Tuesday special. This spot is great for getting together with friends and watching sports with all their tvs. The service was quick and took our orders right away. We had wings, steak tacos, and nachos. Everything was fairly delicious and paid $50 overall.

Yelp
Unfortunately the Piggery fell short on service. I was excited to try this place for the first time and it looks like it will be my last. I passed by this place frequently and was always intrigued with the lights and rooftop situation. I arrived and got seated outside but initially wanted to sit in the rooftop but was closed. The waitress approached me and said I needed a few minutes to review drinks, overall menu, and I was waiting for my friend. When my friend arrived, the waitress came back immediately and asked both of us what we wanted to order. I proceed to order a strawberry margarita and my friend was deciding as she just arrived. The waitress walks away with an obvious attitude and then a few minutes later gives me the wrong drink (regular margarita). I told her she gave me the wrong order and she had a major attitude claiming this was my order. First off, I saw her write down strawberry margarita on the paper and I approached her in a calm tone. Not sure what her problem was or if it was an off night but she clearly was just going to give a negative demeanor during our time there. Still my friend and I stuck it out but didn't order any food and regretted even ordering drinks. Finally my friend and I finished our drinks and she never came by to our table again. So we had to walk all the way to the front just to get our check. The guy at the front practically almost threw both of our credit cards at me. After that my friend and I walked away and we were despised with the Piggery. The whole experience was such a disappointment.

Yelp
I went here for Superbowl or playoff football games one year they did have pretty good food. The service was very nice and paced well. The ambiance was good.

Fred R.

Yelp
Great place to watch football! Love the atmosphere here. Good food, drinks and football bingo game.

Dennis C.

Yelp
The Piggery is a great place to catch the game of your choice. Plenty of TV's to watch and the service is fantastic!

Luke V.

Yelp
Amazing food, staff is super welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be coming back

Haley P.

Yelp
The Piggery has great service and great food. Great brunch options and Sunday game day bingo!

Ellie A.

Yelp
Yeah! Merry Christmas! Love the piggery. Great beer great food . You really need to come here!!! Bears bingo is a blast!!!!
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
This place was absolutely empty when we came in here on a Friday afternoon, but we got to sit anywhere we wanted and had great service! The Piggery has a giant downstairs level and then an upstairs with an outdoor patio and bar area. The decor and atmosphere is casual and nice, and the food menu is pretty extensive. We tried a little bit of everything and had nothing but good things to say about each thing. The pretzels with queso off the appetizer menu were phenomenal and the Mac n cheese is on the top of my favorites list. Tacos were a little bland but not bad for the price. The only downside is the lack of domestic light beers on draft and the silence while we are (turn on some music and it would've been okay!). However, we will definitely be making this a regular spot.

Yelp
Went here for the first time. I had a delicious burger cooked to perfection. Food and service were top notch. We will definitely return. Happened to be a raffle going in for their 13 year anniversary. Our servers name was gabby. She is awesome. We built the perfect burger
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
My husband is being extra cautious during this time & we opted to sit in the heated outdoor tent. As time went on, the heat stopped coming on and we were chilled. There were three couples but were told separate checks weren't given...figure it out yourself! Not good. We each split the full slab of ribs, had cocktails and desserts. Check was almost $200 yet we were charged for the birthday cake which was served without a candle. Ridiculous. The loaded potato was very small and would not consider it loaded with anything but a bit of cheese. BUT, since the ribs were delicious, I would return for my own full slab!

Caitlin C.

Yelp
Best local restaurant in the area. It's our cheers. They treat everyone like you're family. The food is all made in house and always delicious. We love sitting on the rooftop in the summer. I can't say enough about this place. Oh yeah. bears bingo is my favorite!
google avatar

Karen F.

Yelp
I'm giving 2 stars because the atmosphere/ambience on the rooftop what is decent. I had been eyeing this place for the last 2 years always driving by and I finally decided to stop in with a friend for a nice evening meal up top. Sad to say the food we had was disappointing I had pulled meat nachos my friend had the bbq sandwich with a tiny side of fries and a side of dry Mac & cheese. I tried the Bloody Mary thinking ok the food ain't good but the drink might be better! & No that was basic too,. The vibe was good and we liked the view. I'd say try it out, why not! I don't know if I'd try it again or not.

Riyona A.

Yelp
Very chill rooftop we recently visited Labor Day weekend. I knew forsure it would be hard to get a reso, but called and had no issues at all. Their rooftop is very cute and small but provided for a chill atmosphere. The food was GREAT. I ordered the burger and added bacon. It was cooked to perfection. My friend purchased the bbq chicken pizza and it was also delicious. We plan to come back for their bottomless mimosas because the price point is unmatched!
google avatar

Korey E.

Yelp
Ate hear on vacation as it was directly across from my airbnb. Convenient location for sports fans as it is a short 15-20 min walk to Wrigley Field. No issue with service as server was friendly and responsive, manager also came by to check on us. Location appeared clean. The problem is the food, nothing special at all, everything appeared and tasted to be frozen food. If you are drinking here or looking for a quick bite before a game at Wrigley, the food is serviceable, otherwise stay away.
google avatar

Riley M.

Yelp
great ribs and the service and rooftop were exceptional loved the fries and sauces as well
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
I'm so glad we stumbled upon this place for a cheap, bottomless mimosa brunch! I went with a friend on Saturday around 11:30am and it was pretty empty. We were able to get a table on the roof top which was spacious and had a fun vibe! We ordered $15 bottomless mimosas. They were a little heavy on the OJ but for the price you couldn't pass it up. Three mimosas more than covered the cost of ordering them individually. For brunch I ordered the breakfast burrito and it was *chefs kiss* amazing. It was HUGE and had the perfect balance of chorizo sausage and egg. It had other veggies and cheese which made it savory and delicious. It came with some crispy hashbrowns and a serving of pico de Gallo and salsa. Overall I was impressed and had a great time!
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Decent typical bar. Good service and just average bar food. If they upgraded their menu, this place could be on a totally different level. Ordered the pizza, wings and chicken and waffle sliders and everything was just OK. Beer lines could use a cleaning/adjustment, but wasn't too bad either. Was slightly irritated that their bar is 21 and over (just list that on your website somewhere so families don't come in thinking something different).
google avatar

Jhordin A.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this spot! Great prices, fun decor and patio area. Good service. Great food and drinks too. I opted for the strawberry mimosa and chorizo skillet and they were both great. My friend got the Bloody Mary and it was delicious and only $5! Such a good spot right outside downtown.
google avatar

Brittanie L.

Yelp
Had a great Sunday here. The food is delicious and the atmosphere (especially during Bears and Wisconsin football games) is tough to beat. Loved the decor too!
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
Great place to watch a bears game. Good crowd but not over crowded. The chicken tenders are to die for.

Alexandra P.

Yelp
I ordered the tacos mix only cilantro and cheese instead i received a poor excuse of a taco. My receipt even said only cilantro and cheese.... horrible and my fries were even soggy .... if ny fries could be a gif it would be a bunch of french fries crying because thats how soggy it was.
google avatar

Charlie W.

Yelp
The piggery Cuban is mammoth! Loved the homemade fries. Others i our party had Swedish pancakes, Gouda burger, and carnitas green Chile omelet. All were very tasty. The wait staff was just awesomeness! Very friendly and helpful. We went for brunch on Sunday and found plenty of street parking which is always a plus in Chicago.

Yelp
I had ribs & sides delivered. The cornbread was undercooked and very heavy. Neither sweet nor savory and oddly didn't taste like cornmeal or any cornbread I've made or eaten - or would ever eat again. I took one bite and threw it in the trash. The ribs were less than Average. They are not spicy which is fine for me but perhaps you like dry rub ir smoky ir spicy barbecue. This is none of those. Nor were they caramelized. I will say they were quite tender and literally fell off the bones. But I'd much rather get from Portillo's or Carson's. Slaw, potatoes - hard pass. Maybe if you're out drinking with friends it's serviceable bar good, but definitely not a dinner destination. With a name like The Piggery I was hopeful but I won't order from them again.

roberta k.

Yelp
Ordered burger & fries thru Grub Hub. Burger came without fries which I had specifically ordered and was listed on my delivery ticket. Called restaurant. They did NOTHING to make it right. Seems they could have cared less. I spent 30 bucks, including a tip, for a lonely burger with no sides. Pretty expensive. Done with this place. Their customer service SUCKS big time.
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
We tried "The Piggery" for the first time yesterday. We ordered the Tacos as a starter, 2 steak and 2 Chicken Tinga both of us thought the steak was "fatty and gristly", I mentioned it to the waitress and she simply said "OK" but nothing else like "I'll get the manager or I'll take it off your bill". The Chicken Tinga on the other hand had a good taste and a generous portion. I ordered the Black & Bleu Cheese Burger and it was good, cooked perfectly with caramelized onions and mushrooms my guest ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich and she said it was good but just a little heavy on the BBQ sauce. I ordered coffee, it was a little strong but that was OK considering it was an outdoor patio and 33° so that was OK with me. My friend ordered a Ginger Ale, I was surprised they charged $3.00 for a soft drink in a plastic glass considering most places charge an average of $2.00-$2.50. There's an elevator to the second floor so that's good for handicapped people or someone that has trouble walking up a flight of stairs, that was a big help for both of us. The bathrooms were clean but the men's room didn't have hot water. Overall it was an OK experience with a welcoming staff with the exception of the tough steak issue other than that she was nice and the timing was good on the food.

Dave F.

Yelp
great sports bar with amazing food. staff goes above and beyond to make your experience great. seems to have lots of regulars at bar especially one guy I keep hearing about named Dennis. I think he keeps buying drinks for everyone drinks.
google avatar

Jana B.

Yelp
this place is so darn cute and the drinks are INCREDIBLE. The service, the food presentation is excellent. However, the food itself was so f*cking lackluster. Seriously, it was like the ghost of salt and pepper lingered around my mashed potatoes instead of there actually being any. Mac and cheese could have been out of a box. Pulled pork and ribs just tastes like sugar. But I mean look at the presentation: it's gorgeous.
google avatar

Daniel V.

Yelp
Their Sunday rib special is very tasty. Half or whole slab is the only question you'll struggle with. Try and decide the night before. But take my advice...whole slab it. Live life with no regerts, am i right?!
google avatar

Lindsay J.

Yelp
We had a great time here for the Super Bowl! Amazing staff and delicious food! Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Tatiana C.

Yelp
The servers were great! Everyone in the bar including the customers are so nice. Very cute bar. I'm giving my experience 4 starts just because the food here was 50/50. Personally I didn't like their mash potatoes. It wasn't anything I wanted to order ever again. The pork sandwich was delicious but the steak sandwich was ehh okay. Their fries would have been better with some bacon and if they had gone easy on the chilly it would have made a difference. I do want to come back and try something else to see if I what I order just wasn't it

Marky R.

Yelp
Went here for dinner and when we walked in there were not many people dining and all the employees were standing around. The owner was drinking at the bar and noticed us immediately, but still we stood waiting to be seated for so long that we thought we were just supposed to seat ourselves. We walked up the stairs and realized the roof was not open so we went back downstairs and waited at the front again for a couple minutes to see if someone would seat us. The owner and other employees saw us but didn't acknowledge us. Eventually someone came and sat us outside but at this point the vibes were so weird and I could tell what the service was going to be like so we left

Yelp
I ordered takeout from the Piggery, but the restaurant itself looks really cool! It's walking distance from Wrigley Field, has a rooftop, and fire pit. The cheese curds were phenomenal and came with a very tasty chipotle ranch. I ordered the Badger Burger which had the meat patty, sliced bratwurst, fried cheese curds, queso, and caramelized onions on it. DELICIOUS.

Mary H.

Yelp
Last Tuesday night I hosted a party for 12 at The Piggery. We were happy to be in a side room, which was beautifully decorated for the holidays. There were only a few other customers in the restaurant. We ordered a variety of food including ribs, salad, hamburgers, and chicken. Three people ordered chicken. One order was cooked although not brown and crisp. Two orders of chicken were clearly not cooked through. The mashed potatoes that came with the chicken were at room temperature. The rack of ribs was dried out and covered with sauce. The sandwiches looked rather gloppy, but I did not taste them. The french fries were fine and everyone passed those around to share. Everyone sort of pushed food around the plates and asked for go boxes so that they did not leave their orders practically untouched. Because I did not want to ruin the party I did not complain at that time. One guest arrived late, and it took 30 minutes to get a basic hamburger while we all waited .The next day I called and spoke with the manager who said he was sorry that we had a bad experience and that he would speak with the chef. To say that I was disappointed is a great understatement.

Yelp
Great ribs! Their Monday night special is awesome. Can't wait for warmer weather to do the rooftop!

Yelp
Bottomless mimosas, football bingo, and a happy wife. Honestly one of the best times we've had in a long while. Thank you piggery staff! Check this spot out.

Yelp
Food is OK but service and space is great! Had my birthday here last minute and they allowed me to bring about 25 people to their back area. Had bags and so much space. Friendly staff!
