Your Guide to Eating in South Sacramento | Eater SF

"Located on a wickedly busy corner next to a tire shop, Pitt’s is a true neighborhood institution. Opened in 1979, Denise Shelton is a one-woman kitchen army cranking out warm biscuits, chile verde with pinto beans, chicken-fried steak, crispy hash browns, grits and eggs, and SOS (“shit on shingles,” a hamburger patty with cream gravy on toast). Saddle up at the front counter next to folks in Stetson hats and Air Jordans for a welcoming plate of food, all of which is made from scratch." - Illyanna Maisonet

Why Pitts Stop is One of Sacramento’s Best Diners  - Eater SF

"Located on a busy corner next to a tire shop, Pitts Stop — informally known as “the Pitts” — is a true neighborhood institution. It’s the only restaurant within a half-mile radius in a food desert of South Sacramento. The Pitts serves as a safe space where food is affordable. Owner Denise Shelton, who opened it in 1979, is known for her scratch-made biscuits, chicken-fried steak, and a variety of other dishes. Despite recent knee surgeries, Shelton continues to play a crucial role in the kitchen. The restaurant is famous for its diverse clientele and community atmosphere, earning the nickname 'United Nations of South Sacramento.'" - Illyanna Maisonet

Google
Went in on a Monday morning and we couldn’t believe how amazing the food is and how economical it is to eat here! Their bacon gravy is house made not powdered from a packet. Everything comes out hot and the eggs are always cooked perfectly! Hard to believe that this place has been there nearly 50 years and I’m just now finding it! Do yourself a favor and give this place a shot, you won’t be disappointed. The average price for breakfast is around $12-$15 Photos: pancakes, eggs with hash browns with corned beef hash, and oatmeal.

This place is AMAZING, I love their chicken fried steak breakfast.

Google
Customer service was great thank you Amy , with endless coffee, and the pancakes was really good , with the chicken fried steak and gravey with eggs. Thanks to the great chef D, she know how to make some great food . I even got a father's day gift which just topped it off . If you like GOOD small family own breakfast spot this is the place to come

Google
Yummy home-style food made by the nicest folks. This picky lady was served a delicious made to order breakfast and it was delicious! Plus, I had enough for another breakfast this morning. The hubby had a sausage mess and enjoyed every bite. We plan to stop in every time we're in the 'hood.

Google
Haven’t actually eaten the food yet but I was completely impressed by the welcoming attitudes of everyone here and helpfulness. Seems like a really fun place to work and given the high ratings I’m sure their food is gonna be great! PLUS they have bacon gravy, two 👍

Google
Found this little hole in the wall on Saturday morning I went with my wife and our baby. When we walked in were greeted by the waitress and told to sit wherever we would like there was perfect customer service and the environment was really homelike for being a small place our waitress made sure our coffee cups stayed full and kept checking to see if we needed anything and there’s was some nice small conversation our orders came our very quick and hot and were made to perfection we will definitely be coming back every other day for the coffee, the food and customer service

Google

Google
This is by far the best breakfast I have had in a long time. All the employees and owner are friendly. Made me feel like I'm eating with family. My only complain is they don't have a couch to lay down and rest after all the food 🤣🤤😴. I recommend trying this place out if you are in town or passing by.

Yelp
My husband and I had a day off together and some time to burn so we wanted to go to breakfast. I've wanted to try this breakfast diner, so today was the day! I ordered a cheese omelette with hash-browns and white toast. I wish the hash-browns were crispy - I know to ask next time! Also, the toast had a margarine spread that pretty thick and tasteless- next time I will ask for real butter. My husband's colossal of a meal was the big guy omelette just loaded with everything you could imagine. He was in heaven with its' wonder and accompaniment of home fries and biscuit with gravy. The food overall was great! The diner is a dive, it is cute and quant. The bathrooms are located outside, they were dingy, dusky, and so small - more like an outhouse almost. The staff were very friendly and professional!

Yelp
This is a delightful hole in the wall place. Seems to have many regulars and a kind staff. If you're looking Pancakes, hash, and scramble, this is about as good as it gets. The pancakes were HOT and delicious, hash and eggs were perfectly prepared. What else can you ask for?! Prices are as fair as they come as well.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! The breakfast sandwich was incredible, one of the best I've ever had! The service was excellent too and the staff are super friendly. A perfect hole in wall breakfast spot that feels super welcoming. Best bang for your buck, I highly recommend giving it a try!

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall spot! We have lived just a couple miles away for almost 10 years but this was our first time in. We sat at the counter and had friendly service and a great breakfast. I was excited to order a veggie omelette and actually get lots of fresh veggies inside! Our coffee cups were always kept full, too.

Yelp
Pitt's Stop seems to be a neighborhood favorite, and I was surprised I'd never noticed it before. It's a small spot when you first walk in, but there's a back room with additional seating. I tried the veggie omelet, which was super cheesy--a plus for me--but it could've used more seasoning. My husband ordered the French toast special, and he absolutely loved it. I'll definitely go back because I think I might've just ordered the wrong thing this time.

Edmundo P. D.

Yelp
Food and service is great. Breakfast plates are great. And now open Thursday- Tuesday.
google avatar

Yelp
Like home cooked meals Low price meals. Sorry to say but they are "not" open on Thursday!

Yelp
The Pitt Stop restaurant is just as amazing now as it was when I first visited as a teenager. This family-owned and operated restaurant serves delicious, homemade-style food with great flavors. The warm, welcoming staff make you feel at home, and it's clear they take pride in everything they do. The location isn't the best but that is the only criticism I have. Whether you're a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, I highly recommend the Pitt Stop. They never disappoint!

Yelp
They're CLOSED Wednesday and Thursdays. I love this place so much, the owner is sweet. Her granddaughter is a server here , she's just as nice . It's clean little restaurant right across the Goodwill Bins and shares a building with a tire shop. Once I came and my car died, they gave me a jump . Another time I came and brought a friend they forgot to hold the mushrooms and once the server realized that, they made her a new one. I loved how it wasn't awkward after lol.

Yelp
Another lovely Sunday breakfast with Scout at the Pitt Stop. We took our neighbor Emily, seen hugging Scout. Please note the Buddy and Scout magnets on the coffee cups on the wall. Included are a picture of Keisha with her daughter Samantha, and her mother Dee, the owner, in the background.

Yelp
Once again we were treated to an amazing breakfast at the Pitt Stop! Amazing food and service for a better than fair price! Don't miss out!

Yelp
Great food Good prices. Nice people home style cooking at its best. Had both breakfast and lunch

Yelp
I've eaten breakfast here twice now, and I'm already hooked. Don't let the unassuming storefront fool you - the offerings inside are pure gold! I don't know much about this joint, other than the counter was full with what looked like "regulars" last time I came in; you definitely get the feeling this is a local institution! Pitt's serves down-home breakfasts with pretty much all the standard options you can imagine (eggs, hash browns, country potatoes, bacon, sausage, toast, pancakes, omelets, etc.), as well as daily specials. Last time I got my plate with spam as the protein - I was in HEAVEN. The service is superb, too. Our servers have been friendly and attentive, and this place passes the "vibe check" for sure. Don't pass it up - give it a try if you haven't already. I bet you'll be hooked ;)

Yelp
One of the old school small breakfast/lunch diner/dives of Sac, reminiscent of the old Market Club, Eddies, and June's Cafe. In fact, Libby of Market Club is still providing service to regulars just like she did years ago. She's there on Mondays and Tuesdays, so drop in and say hi. The simple two-egg breakfasts are served up quickly, hot and delish, just like your momma used to do. Here's a pic of eggs and corned beef hash, and the other of spam and eggs. Service is great and ya get great flat iron grill breakfasts just like in the old days.

Yelp
I feel like if I wasn't trying to watch my figure and in a hurry this would have been a much more fun restaurant to visit. I am trying to give a review that reflects that. I think The Pitt's Stop is a classic diner where patrons really do feel like family. The owner and the server both learned my name and remembered it, and they seemed to know the names of everyone who came in. Everyone was friendly and I chatted with the person next to me about what's going on in our lives. The food was very reasonable. I expected to pay much more, especially after leaving kind of a big tip. I looked at the receipt and was a bit taken back by only paying $34 for breakfast for two people (and that includes tax and tip). Considering all the food and drink we got, that's a little bit cheaper than McDonald's. And the food was very good. The eggs were cooked perfectly. I see why this place is an institution in Sacramento dining. The menu is pretty small and it seemed pretty basic to me. They close at 2 so there's little in the way of dinner items. I'd be interested to try some more of the things they serve though.

Yelp
This kind of small hometown restaurant just trying to make it are hard to find these days, food's great and yeah a little patience when they get busy is worth the wait when your food comes, I like it and I guess that's all that matters.

S B.

Yelp
Woke up hungry and decided to try Pitt's Stop for breakfast. It's a small hole in the wall with a cast of regulars. Had the Chicken Fried Steak breakfast and it really hit the spot. My only comment is the potatoes were bland, other than that, the meal was delicious and the coffee was good. I'll come by again for certain.
google avatar

Jessica O.

Yelp
If I had the option, I would rate this a 3.5, but I would rather go higher than lower for this place. It's a little hole-in-the-wall diner, outside and in. My wife and I went here for breakfast and the food was pretty average diner food. I got the country Benedict and it was very under seasoned, but salt, pepper, and some hot sauce fixed that right up. The eggs were cooked perfectly - runny golden yolk with firm egg whites. The home fries were good, again under seasoned and a little under cooked, but good still. My wife got the country fried steak with hash browns and she had the same sort of experience - under seasoned. The staff is very kind and attentive, they were always smiling and kept my wife's coffee cup full the whole time we were there. It is very obvious this place has a loyal following of regular customers.

Yelp
i'm a regular here and the food is always spot on! the staff are friendly and the regulars are also super nice! it's always lovely to eat here!

Yelp
I'm from Southern California and I come up to Sacramento for work occasionally, I had lunch at this place around eight years ago and now I'm coming back to Sacramento for work about every 3 to 4 weeks and I've been trying to find this place until this week, I finally found it highly recommend Mike, Dean and Adam are top-notch service, top-notch food Highly highly recommend great atmosphere best breakfast in town hands-down
google avatar

Arica S.

Yelp
This restaurant has been here over 40 years and I had never heard of it! Super friendly family runs it and Owner Mike was great with the kids and super helpful. The food was incredibly affordable for a family of 5 and actually had a kids menu which is hard to find in Sacramento. My only complaint was the food did take a long time, so bring entertainment for the kiddos and you'll be fine. Definitely a hidden gem and we will be back for the Saturday steak and eggs special!
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Cutest cozy breakfast spot with a little town feel food is great and service is on point. Best kept secret in Sacramento. Long time owner of this spot is most hospitable and Adam our server doesn't miss a thing!

Yelp
I was very excited to try this place. I've driven by it a few times and have been so enticed by the hole in the wall vibes. I checked Yelp and google and the reviews gave me the impression that this place is a Sacramento staple. Upon arrival, we were greeted and told to sit wherever we wanted. We chose a table in the side room. When we sat, I noticed someone may have been just here sipping coffee because, although, the table was clean, the spoon had dribbles of coffee still. We didn't mind, since it was probably our fault for sitting there. I ordered coffee and the chicken fried steak meal that came with eggs, hash browns and toast. My wife ordered their country eggs Benedict with their home fries. Their coffee was run of the mill diner coffee (our server gave me old cream from another table, but still cooler than expected) and their water tastes like unfiltered tap, nothing really to complain about. Our food took a little longer than a normal wait, being as there were only about three tables occupied. When we got our food, it was on the colder side, not very hot. Overall, the food was mediocre. Everything was pretty much under seasoned/not seasoned at all. I needed to add salt and pepper to everything, including the gravy. My wife thought the same, and even had to add hot sauce. I really enjoyed the crunchiness of their hash browns, but they also had a very unpleasant taste, like of used old oil or an unclean grill? I'm not sure. Overall, I wouldn't come back for breakfast, but I would definitely like to try their lunch items (the chicken club they offer sounds good).

Melissa G.

Yelp
My husband and I went to have breakfast a few weeks ago. The food was good and came out hot. The staff are very friendly. The restaurant has a quaint vibe with a couple of hundred of pictures from people who have eaten there before. I recommend going to this restaurant. We will definitely be back.

Rudy Z.

Yelp
Food took way too long to come out and was definitely over cooked and bland. Floors and tables were dirty and I normally wouldn't pay attention if the location was busy however there wasn't that many people at the time. And having a giant cockroach walking around the dining floor didn't really help the experience.
google avatar

Bob C.

Yelp
I got a nice breakfast there, and of all the days I finally pick to go, it was the day the owners were in talks with a buyer. So the place was packed, and I had a long wait, for the food, the waiter, she warned me there would be a long wait, as a bunch of people had just came in before me, she stated, and I talked to a couple of "Long time customers", who told me the place was going to be sold. So I liked the place, and it really is unusual, and they were hoping the new people don't make a lot of changes, and I also home they do not. Prices were good.
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
This is the place! Small, family owned business with great service & great food! Prices are like they used to be - nice and inexpensive. I'll support this place before I go to any chain restaurant. You walk in here and you feel like you're part of the family! Come here and support good people that are trying to make an honest living!

Yelp
I have visited this establishment since I was a little girl l, my mother, grandmother and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins also love this restaurant. I now bring my children out favorites are the country Benedict, the Royal breakfast sandwich with bacon or sausage !!! Delicious !!! And great customer service !!!

Yelp
Great food, great service, and really down-to-earth, hole in the wall atmosphere! Would definitely eat here again!

Yelp
Lived in Sac for so long, drove by this so many times and never noticed since it's the bottom floor of an apartment complex. The definition of hole-in-the-wall. Staff is great, coffee is good. Fancy myself a biscuits and gravely aficionado and they make: bacon country gravy!? Yes, and good old S.O.S. For those of you who spent any time in the service. I had the chicken fried steak and gravy. Chef's kiss.
google avatar

Anthonee A.

Yelp
Ive driven past this place so many times and I always wondered how it was. Well I finally stopped in and it was great. I grew up in the area and now I'm upset I never knew about this place. I ordered the chicken fried steak....Yes. It was made well. My eggs were cooked perfectly and my hasbrowns were crispy. I had a fresh biscuit instead of toast. Yum. My coffee cup stayed full and my food came out hot. No complaints. Thanks Pitts. I will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
When we walked in everyone was saying hello. Even the customers. It was like walking into Cheers. Seriously it was like that. Lol We have come back several times just for the service. This place is in a wierd apartment looking building in a really bad neighborhood. Franklin Blvd. Still worth checking out. The waiter was soooooo nice. We got the feeling that his mom owned the place...... We were rite lol. Not a ton of tables. Not the cleanest in the world. Just an old old greasy diner. How was the food already??? Ok ok..... So the food is pretty good. They are very proud of the biscuits.... They are alright. The gravy. Pretty good. The eggs were cooked perfectly. Somebody got the pork chops. They looked very good. The hashbrowns were on point! All in all the food was 3 stars. The service was five stars all day. We will go there again someday. See you there.
google avatar

Yelp
When you drive up to The Pitt's Stop don't let the outside appearance scare you off. It is very rustic. The inside decor reminds you of an old fashion diner. The friendly owner and staff make up for the decor. They are open 6:30am - 2pm Tuesday- Friday, Saturday & Sunday 8am- 12 noon, Closed Monday. They are known for their breakfast which is served all day. The lunch dishes are simple. Sandwiches, Soups and Hamburgers. You will be pleased when you step inside!

Yelp
I was recommended to come here by a friend of mine named Joe. According to Joe this place is a home town breakast place. Its small, quaint and kitschy. There is a nice sized wrap around conter, which is where sat to enjoy my first brunch at Pitts. The owner was a sweet as could be, and I happened to be enjoying my first meal at Pitt's on his birthday. A very humble congenial person. He an his staff made me feel as though I was eating breakfasting en la cocina de mi madre (in my mother's kitchen.) And I must say, it has been a long time since I have had a real home cooked meal. I appreciated the way the waitress and the employees at Pitt made me feel so welcome. You see, for someone like me, who dines solo most of the time, Pitts is truly the type of place I prefer to patronize. Upon entrance to this little restaurant the waitress suggested that I find a seat wherever I'd like. She immediately brought me coffee and water within nano seconds. In other words, the service here is super fas. The food at Pitts is yummy as I ordered the chicken fried steak with eggs over easy. I love runny yolks for dipping my biscuits and the eggs were made just like I ordered. They were so yummy. The biscuits were warm as if they had just come out of the oven and they were served on a separate plate with a generous mound of butter. Another +1! You have got to try this place. It is such a relaxing environment and it seemed as though the owner and his employees knew every patron by first name! I will most definitely return and I think you should visit Pitts as it truly is a hidden gem. Family owned and operated ...I love this place!

Yelp
What a great secret, stored away in what looks of an old motel or apartment off the side of Franklin Bl close to 47th Ave. Super friendly and a down home warm welcoming small place centered around a tiled wrap-around counter with a side room of tables n chairs. Food was like revisiting my childhood. Fresh, crisp and delicious. Country fried steak, Biscuits, gravy and some perfectly pan fried home fries. The country fried steak was nice and crispy just the way it should be. It may be an eyesore from a distance but once inside it holds much much more.

Yelp
Sometimes the unassuming, humble front is the kind of place you just get get enough of. How this place has never had it's 15 minutes of fame on Diners Drive ins and Dives I'll never know! Guy Fieri where you at??! You missed one bro! Every other week the chef cooks up some serious green chilli verde....Chef Denise slings this green gold on omelettes, aside beans, eggs or however you want to get this stuff down... it is really good! This woman gets down on her seasoned grill...She is a one women show back there and everything shines. We keep coming back to try something new and have had some unexpected surprises along the way. There is definitely a following inspired by the indigenous culture of this southside neighborhood. It is not uncommon to see a regular helping themselves to a cup of coffee behind the counter. It feels like your in Moms kitchen and I Love it here.

Timothy-Joseph V.

Yelp
Food is closest thing to homemade you will get! I'm an avid breakfast person and have been around breakfast joints all around Sac, Pitt Stop is the best! Highly recommend the Chile verde when they are serving it or the pork chop breakfast!

Yelp
As good as it gets for hospitality and heaping plates of breakfast joy! Five-star smiles. Five-star friendly. Five-star hole-in-the-wall. Five-star made from scratch breakfast! Hard at work at the grill, Denise Pitts is queen of her domain. Thank you to your Pitts Stop family of friends for making us feel so welcome and now, I can say, "I'm part of the cool crowd at Pitts Stop along #FranklinBoulevard and #MartinLutherKingBoulevard in Sacramento." You'll leave with a happy tummy and (hopefully) a few new friends. This small-time diner has been feeding locals since 1979. They must be doing something right. Ask about some of the 'not on the menu items' such as the house spicy sausage patties. For me it always comes back to the hospitality and smile factor. Yep! I'll be back!

Yelp
I came here for the first time as a return favor for a friend by buying him lunch. He suggested Pitt Stop. I am always open to the hole-in-the-wall businesses and I am a supporter of local and small businesses. I give Pitt Stop 3 stars for the following overall reasons: 1) The food was good. We ordered mushroom burger with fries, avocado burger on sourdough with hash browns, coffee for one, and triple decker traditional pancakes. I would give the food 3.5 stars. It was competitively comparable to local burgers around (not withstanding fast food joints). 2) As for the price points, I thought their food was rather "expensive" considering the ambience and facility. I didn't expect to pay $24 (excluding tips) for a lunch for two. With a $5 tip, the total cost was $29. Still, for me, it was rather steep in relation to the overall dining experience and service. But to say Pitt Stop has the hands-down-one-of-the-best-burgers-ever, well no. It's competitively comparable. But not the best to really make it a point to come here on a regular basis because I know I can get a burger elsewhere for about the same price with a far better dining experience-ambience-and taste just as good (if not better). 3) The restrooms are small and outside of the building. I was apprehensive using it, and you needed a key to get in. I won't say that I will actually go out of my way to get food here. But at the same time, I am open to returning in the future just for the heck of it.

Rose B.

Yelp
I like a old school place look like something out of a movie they gave me a lot of food and I don't remember when I last had breakfast for such a good price.
google avatar

Megan W.

Yelp
The best service in town. My boyfriend and I both enjoyed our food. I'm veggie so I ordered oatmeal, home fries, and an English muffin. The oatmeal was surprisingly delicious! Fresh, not the mushy slop you usually get at breakfast spots. The home fries were so flavorful and great as well. My bf loved the pancakes too. Our waitress was so friendly and attentive. She told us this place has been here since 1979 and I can see why. The owner, a very sweet woman, came out and greeted us and thanked us for coming in. I will definitely be back here anytime I'm looking for breakfast.
google avatar

Tonya G.

Yelp
Great food, and the server was super friendly - right up until he started in with prejudiced racial remarks about another group of customers. We were absolutely flabbergasted. This is CA right? And the restaurant is in a diverse neighborhood. Enjoyed the food, and great prices, but probably won't be back for this reason.
google avatar

Vicky D.

Yelp
Sparse parking that really looks like a pit stop! BUT, as saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover... Our pancakes & french toast, each w/two eggs-n-bacon, was home-made good and costing under $17 total, made us pleasantly surprised! This place now on our breakfast radar!

Yelp
Me and my father in law loves this place. You feel like you're eating at your moms house. The hospitality is the best ever by far

Yelp
My husband and I always drove by this restaurant but we never wanted to stop by. One day, I thought I would explore them on yelp and thought, "hmm the food looks good " so today we had a chance to finally stop in . Everything was delicious, the coffee was nice and hot and the customer service was on point. It's a cozy little place but so inviting and you can tell the regulars love this place. We will come in again....Thank you Gustavo and Sylvia
