The Best Pizza Restaurants in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Order a slice — cut generously from 18-inch pies, then reheated in an oven, New York-style — from this snug Mission District shop. The straightforward, East Coast-vibes are strong here: These golden-crusted pizzas are topped with classic combinations like mushroom sausage, tomato garlic, cheese, pepperoni, and more. There’s often a white sauce slice on offer, too." - Lauren Saria

San Francisco’s Best Pizza By The Slice | Eater SF

"Thomas Jividen, a Jersey Shore slice-shop veteran, opened the Pizza Shop on 24th Street in 2014, and it’s a reliable stop for $3 and $4 slices whose merits are hard to argue against. Pizzas are sitting in a display case — order a few slices and they’ll heat them up for you. “Believe in pizza again” is their slogan — and the product might well convert SF slice skeptics." - Caleb Pershan

Awesome pizza. Very light for pizza. Perfectly crispy, no flop. Tangy sauce. Nice owner/employees. Spacious environment with open windows and very clean. Clean bathroom too.

Google
Thought i would buy 2 slices, eat one now & take one home. Both slices were gone in 8 minutes. Delish

Google
This place is such a vibe. I love the food, the staff and the environment. I love coming here with my family and playing their Godzilla video game. Definitely is true New York pizza.

Topher Ellis

Google
Stopped in at the Pizza Shop for a quick slice while on 24th street. Not sure if it was slow time but we ended up with a dry and stale slice that was very hard and crunchy. Perhaps next time I would order a whole pizza rather than a slice.

Google
I’m from Brooklyn New York finally tried it. Lacking quality ingredients! The cheese is garbage quality I don’t think it’s really mozzarella… so is the sauce no flavor… but the cheese 100 is a hard no … The dough is passable. But certainly not a New York pizza. It was worth a try

Matt B

Google
Really, really good pizza; probably one of my new favorites in SF. The dough is almost New York-y, just a bit too thin, and it’s got a wonderful SF sourdough-y twist which enhances the pizza so much. The shop is a very simple few tables in the same room as the pizza oven. But when the slices are this good, who cares what the shop looks like

James Kim

Google
Absolutely speechless. One of the only places in San Francisco that I’ve found that can make a perfectly competent NY Slice. Nice wide slices. Crispy cracker thin crust. No flop. Had the white pie and combo and both were solid pizzas. Comfortable seating and plenty of space. Feels modern compared to some of the more run down places in the city. Will be back anytime I’m craving a NY slice. They take cash and card.

Decent NY slice, Outta sight / Gioia are much better!!

Yelp
Pizza Shop has the best crust!! I love the pizza here. They only come in one size and prices start at about $23. It makes it easier to order and pizza has been consistently good! We've ordered both pick up and DoorDash and both yielded a consistently good pizza. I've ordered extra pepperoni before and it's an extra charge for extra toppings but I didn't see a difference between extra pepperoni and regular pepperoni so I don't think it's worth it at all to pay extra. There's plenty of indoor seating and booths. It's usually quite quiet in there so it's a good place to grab a slice or a whole pizza and catch up with a friend. Parking may be tricky but easy to get lucky with parking since this area is always has movement. Great crust, great pizza, and slices are also available!

Yelp
Solid pizza spot in the Mission where you can get pizza by the slice. We went right when they opened on a weekday so it wasn't busy. Super clean. Love the retro booths - there was even a retro pinball machine, so fun! YES THEY HAVE A BATHROOM!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a solid pizza spot in the Mission! If you like NY style pizza, then you have to try this place. The pizzas here have a thin, chewy, and flavorful crust. I'm a huge fan of white pies, so my favorite is the white mushroom pizza. The pepperoni and mushroom pizza is pretty tasty too. You can order whole pizzas or by the slice here. If ordering a whole pizza, you can mix and match two different types of pizzas (half/half). Prices were reasonable, and service was seamless as well.

Yelp
Had to get our pizza fix before heading to the Terror Vault in SF for an early halloween venture. We chose to get a few slices for sharing... the pepperoni and mushroom, cherry peppers and pesto, and white spinach. These thin and crispy slices were yummy, even if reheated, a nice crunch in every bite. My fave was the white spinach, and my bf particularly liked the cherry peppers and pesto flavor. The best part is that they have so many options in their display case, which is rare for pizzerias that serve by the slice. The environment was clean and inviting, with plenty of booth seating and a pinball machine at the corner. Staff was great too, providing friendly and efficient service, and wait times were minimal during our visit this past Sunday.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Tied for first in the bay for me. I recommend the mushroom and tomato pesto. It has a nice thin crust with solid flavors. Reasonable prices too. Place has so much space for seating and a retroish style. Service is too tier too everyone is so friendly and even helped me look for a missing part in my bag.

Yelp
Great pizza! I love being able to get a slice to go. My favorites are the cherry pepper pesto and mushroom pepperoni.

Yelp
I will just tell you this. Dave Portnoy, and his pizza reviews have totally destroyed me and has made me become one of the biggest pizza snobs ever. And I am only speaking for legit straight up no BS pizza in this case. I'm not speaking of that fancy artist crafty foo foo stuff. This is hands-down my favorite pizza in San Francisco. This is a true, legit New York style pizza that is made from the best ingredients and the owner is from New York. This place is very casual and simple and there's nothing fancy about it. The pizza speaks for itself. I live in Petaluma and have no problem driving down to the city to pick up a slice. The big thing I always hear about is Golden Boy Pizza and Tony's Pizza in comparison. It's so annoying and I would not even compare this place to those spots. This place has been the benchmark and standard for how I believe pizza should be and it's impossible now to eat pizza in my hometown because I always compare it to The Pizza Shop. That's why when I want pizza, I have to drive down to SF to get it. But it's totally worth it. Thank you for reading my yelp and I hope you all enjoy this place as much as I do. - Chris

Yelp
The pizza here was the best pizza I've tried within the Bay Area. That's it. It's affordable, delicious... two words that aren't common in SF. The cheese pizzas were $4 and the rest are $5! Ambiance: the place is really cool and spacious. It has green cushions all over and wooden tables. Can look out the window while eating. It's peaceful. Wasn't busy, came in around 1 Side note: it does have a restroom Service: the workers there were nice Food: White spinach (8.5/10): this was a very good pizza, the crust is thin and crispy. The flavors of the cheese and spinach goes well together. For a meatless pizza, it shines Tomato garlic pesto (10/10): this what I call a perfect pizza. The crust was thin but mighty crispy. The tomato complimented the pizza so well along with the pesto. I wished it had more garlic but it was still excellent Mushroom olive (7/10): It was an alright pizza. Very greasy and soggy. It had crisp to the crust but compared to the other two, incredibly lacking. It's nothing special Incredible pizza shop, highly recommend. I usually get slice of ny since it's in my city but this place is miles better.

Yelp
I had no idea what to expect when coming here and was pleasantly surprised the pizza was sooooo tasty!!! Slices were a good size, a thinner crust and ingredients tasted fresh. Cost isn't too bad, I'd eat here often if I lived close. Lots of booth seating available and some arcade game. The seating space is pretty big so probably don't have to worry about not finding a seat. I tried two different pizzas. A mushroom one and another I forget now but I'd definitely come back!

Yelp
Love this spot for a quick slice!! If you love New York style pizza, this spot is a must!!! That undercarriage is crispy and the cheese to sauce ratio is on point. Small business, BIG flavors!! Give 'em a try!!

Yelp
An excellent NY style pizza slice place has arrived in the Mission. It is no Arinell Pizza - which has closed. But this is a solid contender. And what makes this place great is that they have not 1 but TWO white slice optionsI One with Mushrooms and one with spinach. I did not try it b the cherry pepper slice sounded divine. The crust is thin and crispy - but a little too stiff, when folded is cracks a bit. But I will happily eat a slice here anytime. All of the pre-made slices with toppings are $5 even and the cheese slice is $4. It is a bit of a hike for me - but I will stop for a snack whenever I am in this hood.

Yelp
I was working a long day and needed a quick bite to hold me over. This joint was 1 block away from today's job site so I gave em a try. The staff was super chill, friendly and had my slices ready to go in no time. I got a pepperoni and mushroom and the second slice was just pepp.. I took advantage of the parmesan cheese and crushed pepper before I left. The one with mushrooms really hit the spot. Not that the pep was bad, but the mushroom joint was next level as their self acclaimed reputation suggests. The place had just opened for the day at noon so there was only one other person there with me but it seems like the type of place to pick up some foot traffic. There's a great deal of clean tables and space to handle most situations. Not just a grab and go slice house. I'd say the best part about this experience was the price. I got 2 slices and left a decent tip for the price that I'd spend to get a regular combo at a fast food joint, actually lower than that!

Yelp
The worst thing about this place is the name. I got nothing bad to say about anything else. Just a really good slice shop. The mission has so much good food, but as far as a pizza slice shop is this the best? I mean this pizza is fighting with the heavyweights if you ask me. It's not knocking the elites off it's spot but it's surely in the fight. They are making one type of pizza. They stick with the fastball and they don't change it up. They don't need too. A variety of slices, good solid crisp. A nice robust sauce. The prices are reasonable. The pizza shop isn't pretending to be anything that it's not. If you want a really good slice in the area then scoot on down to here. It won't disappoint. (4.5 Stars)

Yelp
We enjoyed a blend of Persian and Mexican cuisine in a lounge setting with beautiful cocktails and unique food. The Shishi cocktail is a must order that is mixed with grapefruit-rose Ketel one, coat caravan, lychee, yuzu, bergamot black tea and an edible bubble on top...
google avatar

Yelp
Probably the best NY style slice in SF. For realz. It's thin, crispy, and has just the right tang in the sauce. Excellent. Also, they have a keyboardist playing jazz piano every other Monday, which is cool.
google avatar

Foofa B.

Yelp
Just when you think this place can't get any better, it goes and opens up a lovely seating area where one can devour the scrumptious slices straight out of the oven. Ab fab!
google avatar

Vicky J.

Yelp
Yess this pizza hits the spot. We spontaneously came across this place while on our way to lunch and decided to grab a slice of pepperoni mushroom pizza. The service is quick, the atmosphere is casual - seat yourself. The pizza was so simple, straightforward hot and gooey while crispy at the same time. Will definitely come back to try more flavors and take pics of the food!

Yelp
First time trying this place because cherry peppers caught my attention! Ordered 2 pizzas- 1st, mushrooms, olives, sausage, & those glorious cherry peppers. Just adds a bit of heat to kick it up a notch. I totally recommend! 2nd pepperoni & sausage, not a pepperoni fan but family loves it, while daughter doesn't prefer mine cause I always gotta have mushrooms! Did I mention it's Thin crust! My preference to pizzas as well. I love the taste and texture, I also love the crust! I have this down as my favorites.
google avatar

Neil B.

Yelp
This is my favorite slice in San Francisco. The bottom of the slice is crispy, topping combinations are a mix of unique and classic, and the seating is comfortable. Plus there's a Godzilla pinball machine. It's an old school slice shop and I stop by whenever I'm on 24th.
google avatar

Kitty L.

Yelp
Yes I try this pizza shop, surprisingly delicious pizza and each slice only $5, with sitting and comfortable place. The cashier was very friendly and the back of the pizza makers were also happy people. I think if you need a quick bite and don't want to spend too much money this is the right place to hang out! All of the pizza are so delicious I love them all.
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
If you're a fan of Dave Portnoy's Barstool Sports, and the firm, crispy Brooklyn style with a 'good undercarriage,' you're gonna love this one. No flop here. Crunchier taste, just a bit lighter on the cheese. But I have a Portnoy's complaint/protest. I must confess I have a complete adoration for the drunken style pizza with a lot of cheese on it. If it flops, I don't care; so long as the cheese doesn't slide off its axis, I'm good. I feel that the crispier style is more served to the thin square cuts, not the triangular ones. That's just what I grew up on. Overall -- a respectful cheese slice. Without the frills. Very smooth. slice is about 5-6 dollars now. Good for one of those night on the town, mission district strolls too.
google avatar

Steven G.

Yelp
Got a few slices and the pizza is delicious. The tomatoe/pesto topping was perfectly salty. Both the mushroom and spinach pizzas had ricotta cheese on them which took the pizza to another level. Thin sliced pizza that had the perfect crunch. Staff was very friendly.
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Decided to order the large combo pizza for takeout and was hugely disappointed with the quality of the crust. It was ok but when you got to the outer edge of crust it was so hard and chewy even using a knife made it a struggle to cut through it. The toppings were minimal and just so so mostly olives than what you expect from a combo pizza. Nearly $40. Including tip. It was not worth it.
google avatar

Arian F.

Yelp
The pizza here is amazing, it's walking distance from my house, and I love coming here. For whatever reason, I much prefer the slices over the full pies. I think it's because twice toasted pizza is more crispy. Would highly recommended giving this place a try, especially the slices. The service and ambiance are good, it feels like a nice pizza shop, and not at all dreary. My favorite is the White Mushroom Pizza, but they are all so good!!
google avatar

Breanna D.

Yelp
I got their cheese pizza, and shared with a friend the pepperoni and pineapple pizza. I would believe it if someone told me their pizza tasted exactly like what a NYC pizza should taste like. It was pretty oily (getting in my hands) but hey. I wish there was more pineapple on the slice, but it was good amount of everything! Service was quick and easy. About $9 for both slices total. Ambiance was very chill. Comfy seating (green booths), plus they have a pin ball machine but I didn't try that out. Will come back for sure!

Yelp
Somebody from Texas was raving about the Mexican food in San Francisco. I've heard Texas has good Mexican food, being so close to Mexico. And I know San Francisco's Mission District is renowned for Mexican food. So I figured that I could trust his cuisinely opinions. "What's the best food in all of San Francisco?" I quizzed. He thought about it while licking his lips, his eyes darting about the sky. "We had this pizza," he started slowly, "that was like pizza in it's purest form" "What is the purest form of pizza?" I squawked, perplexed. "Oh," he pondered, "You can have regular pizza, or New York Deep dish, or Chicago deep dish, or Boston style deep dish..." My interest was piqued. "But this is just like, just the right amount of toppings. The perfect crust. The perfect sauce. It was just right." He didn't describe it too much besides that, but it was nearing lunch, so I drove 25 minutes to go halfway across San Francisco and try it out. Two parking spots were available exactly across the street. The sun was shining. People were smiling. It was meant to be. If you want a slice of pizza, go here. If you want a good variety of choices, go here. If you're really hungry, it's fast and it's cheap enough to get a few slices. If you just want a snack, it's not weighed down by too many toppings. If you want to sit and eat, there are several tables. If you want to eat and walk, it comes on a paper plate. Since we're talking perfection, I'd prefer the crust to be slightly less crunchy; I'd prefer there to be slightly less cheese, and slightly more toppings and sauce. The bathroom is super clean. Service is friendly and fast. I wish my neighborhood in Richmond, CA had a pizza-by-the-slice place like this. If you choose to give a thumbs-up or not, I hope you found my review helpful!
google avatar

Vic P.

Yelp
Best pizza in the Mission, hands down. $6, $7 & 5 minutes wait time for a slice. Can't beat it. They keep a line of signature pies and we love the consistency. The cherry pepper n pesto is to die for. I usually grab one of them and pair it with a slice of mushroom sausage. I'm not usually a fan of straight cheese but I'll order it intentionally here. One for me, one for the kiddo. The people are super friendly and service is fast. Compostable utensils provided and a clean, key-accessible single-use bathroom makes it environmentally conscious and especially safe for gender non-binary folks. Thankful for that! Only complaint I could possibly have is I wish they'd stay open late. Besides that they hit all the marks!
google avatar

Adrian L.

Yelp
My wife swears the pizzas here are the closest to New York style pizza. We always order the cheese pizza and it has a thin crust and it's not greasy. We've only done delivery via Door Dash. Most times the pizza arrives in a reasonable amount of time. However, the last one took .90 minutes and the pizza was cold. We look forward to the opportunity to dine in to experience the pizza hot out of eve oven as well as seeing how the service is.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
I heard about this place from a friend and they actually deliver through Uber eats so we decided to try it out. They serve NY style pizza and they do it well. The pizza came still warm and the crust was still crispy on the bottom and the pizza sauce had a nice sweet flavor to it, we got the deluxe combo and what stood out was the sausage. It's a must try even though I still like Long Bridge Pizza more this place I would say is my 2nd favorite for NY style pizza in the city.
google avatar

Bob K.

Yelp
They don't need me to write a review here - they seem to have plenty. Except, I can't help it. Maybe there are others still in mourning over the loss of Arinell on Valencia, who need a new harbor to call home? Well, this is it. They sell pizza, they sell soda, and everything is compostable. Blondie and I stop by here frequently when we visit the Mission. They get a pepperoni slice and Sprite, I get the cheese slice and Diet Coke, and I always make sure to use the very clean bathroom available to patrons. The whole place is clean, really. A little over ten bucks for two slices and a drink is no more than the going rate anywhere else, and they've got the slice part down, when it comes to NY style. Thin crust, gooey cheese, great seasoning. I've never felt compelled to add anything like parmesan, but you can. Sit in the window and watch the strange world pass by in one of the four or five tables, while you avoid burning the roof of your mouth by eating too fast.
google avatar

Hunter C.

Yelp
The pizza is the best (that I know of) in the City. Thin crispy crust. The prices are (surprisingly) cheap. The staff are extremely nice. Legendary.
google avatar

Mariia A.

Yelp
I made a big order at the beginning of the month. I liked all the flavors. My husband liked the pizza with sausages. For children with cheese

Adriana N.

Yelp
Personally my favorite pizza in sf but what is up with businesses no longer having a website? If you are going to use yelp as your website please at least keep it updated. Currently the place is closed for over a week but it's hard to tell because all the online apps reflect different hours and dates, yelp shows it's open, Uber eats saying it doesn't reopen until July 9, DoorDash says July 8. They apparently have a Facebook but they clearly don't run it or if they do they haven't logged in in years. Please I'm begging you have somewhere online to show your hours in REAL TIME Anyway as I said, best pizza in sf in my opinion. I think outta sight and Tony's are very very very close second... they can't compete with pizza shop IMO because in addition to being the perfect pizza, it's also very affordable, much cheaper than both those options. I love all three but price wise pizza shop is best and just taste wise i prefer their sauce (less sweet than outta sight) and crust (less doughy than Tony's) while being $24 for a large cheese vs $34 (outta) and $42 (Tony's- 2 inches bigger) Edit: in the 5 days since I wrote this Tony's reduced their price to $37. Still no competition price or taste wise!

Bhaskar A.

Yelp
Just solid pizza. Thin, slightly crispy crust and tasty sauce. Reminds me of slices I've eaten in NYC. Friendly service. Good amount of seating, large windows with a nice view of the street. Restaurant is in a lively part of the Mission. Would dine-in again.
google avatar

Laila F.

Yelp
This place was recommended to me by two friends who moved here from NYC and swear by it being the best New York style pizza in SF- it did not disappoint. The Cherry Pepper and Pesto Pizza is incredible, especially if you like a little spice, and super unique. I've only ever ordered delivery but would love to visit in person at some point soon. The pies are big and the slices are giant- one pie could easily feed 4 people.
google avatar

Benjamin Navin J.

Yelp
I had a slice of the White Spinach (Spinach and Ricotta), their pizza of the moment (pepperoni, chilis, feta, pineapple) and Tomato Garlic (tomato, garlic, mozzarella, pesto). All three were amazing! The dough is so thin, crispy, and satisfying to eat. Cooked perfectly and each flavor is distinct but never overpowering.
google avatar

Raymond Y.

Yelp
The Pizza Shop is one of the best deals in SF! You can get a hot slice of pepperoni pizza with crispy crust and zesty tomato sauce for only $5!
google avatar

Lucien A.

Yelp
I live up near Little Italy and have tried so many of the pizza places there including Tony's which is known for not only the best pizza in SF but in the country. So they say. But really how do you rank the best pizza? This place here is the best pizza in SF. Really. They don't cram 6 - 9 high-quality ingredients for toppings which seems to be the trick in Little Italy. All of the pizzas here are perfectly balanced with their toppings. I'm especially a big fan of their Julian pizza. Anytime I go to catch a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse I make it a point to stop here.
google avatar

Clara L.

Yelp
Great pizza! But they forgot my meatballs when I paid for it so one star off. Recommend the spinach pizza and asked for more garlic and wish the garlic chunks were bigger, but still was delicious. Friendly staff
google avatar

Helen L.

Yelp
You have to like thin cracker style pizza. Once they heat it up the slices were very cruchy, like a cracker. There was too much crust for me. After eating spinach (flavorful) and some white cheese (not enough) i was left with a big piece of crust. chew chew The price is right for a snack. It was quick 2 min to heat up. There were at least 8 choices (not enough toppings and ingredients on their pizzas). It's like you are on a diet pizza. The cashier guy was nice. Not enough seating about 4 tables. This is a walk and eat type of food.
google avatar

Nick H.

Yelp
I found the prices at The Pizza Shop to be very fair. However, I was disappointed with the quality of the pizza. The crust was stale, making it quite difficult to chew. I believe the pizza could have been enjoyable if it had been fresh. For those ordering to go, I recommend checking the freshness of the pizza before leaving the store.
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Was craving New York style pizza and found this spot online. Got it delivered and it was exactly what we were hoping for. Can't go wrong with a plain cheese pizza. Will order from here again for sure.

Katelynn C.

Yelp
hmm... my husband is a trained pizza expert. the pizza is made pretty decently, like it tastes good... the problem is the crust is very stale and hard to chew which indicates that the pizza dough was most likely baked the day before and re heated today... that's our theory! as pizza crust should be very fresh and crisp regardless if it is thin. AND should be easy to chew! proceed with caution :D
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
From New York, been here for 13 years: this is the closest to top classic NY pizza (not wood-fired or neapolitan) if not as good as some of my favorite NY spots.
google avatar

Nilu S.

Yelp
Great pizza in the city for any taste bud. Personally I like the cherry peppers with tomato, no need for extra chilli flakes because it's got a nice spicy taste. I also like the spinach and white sauce with ricotta cheese, it's so good when eaten warm. Tastes good as leftover also. Service was good for a pickup on a rainy San Francisco day.
google avatar

Francis C.

Yelp
This spot is a real gem. You can do a pie or by the slice. Slices start at $5. I have literally bought a slice 3 days in a row and did not disappoint each time. I stick to pepperoni or pepperoni and mushroom. My partner loves the meat option. Each slice is thin, exceptional crunch. Not greasy. Every bite has the perfect amount of red sauce, toppings and cheese. The whole pie (18") is reasonably price for less than $30. Honestly, it's a great spot. I can't say how much I love it. They are also available on DoorDash which is convenient.

Demy A.

Yelp
The pizza is really good. I ate a pepperoni slice and it was delicious! The people were nice and everything was so nice decorated. The price is cheap too

Chobap G.

Yelp
What happened, Pizza Shop?! I talk you up to all my friends, and I get this desiccated and burnt pie as thanks? No apology, either, when I called to ask if I could return the pizza. The answer was no--they told me they'd make me a new pie once Doordash contacted them. Turns out Pizza Shop doesn't do re-delivery for Doordash, so that was also a dead end.
google avatar

Tim P.

Yelp
You never really know when they will be open. Justifiable boasting about quality of pizza. I like a crispy crust myself. Unlike many by the slice places this one is clean and shiny. Pizza case sparkles and pies are clearly labelled. I went safe with pepperoni and mushroom but there many vegetarian temptations. Special shout out: everything is compostable including cups and straws. Snaps for that.
