Where to Drink Pacific Northwestern Hard Cider in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Cider drinkers know this Brooklyn neighborhood taproom for its cozy, living room vibes, replete with plants and armchairs. The Place focuses on dry ciders, pouring selections like Stray Gold Past Life from Oregon and Yonder ciders out of Wenatchee Valley, Washington, which is known as the “apple capital of the world.” At the back of the bar, retail coolers stock hard-to-find ciders, international beers, and natural wines." - Janey Wong

We were lucky while street parking for a visit to Botto's BBQ. Someone in our group spotted The Place, and did a bit of research, which led to a visit a week later. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly and helpful - being generous with samples, and getting everyone a full serving of their chosen cider. There is outdoor seating, comfy lounge seating just inside the entry door, and tables further back in the space. A mixture of painted flora on the walls, and potted plants spilling down alongside made for a comfortable, welcoming space to enjoy the cider as well as each others' company. At the back of the space, shelves and refrigerated cases hold a wide variety of bottled and canned ciders, so The Place is not only a nice gathering spot, but it's also a great spot to stock your fridge.

Best cider taproom & bottle in the PNW, if not the country.

Overall, this is a nice place to go to have a few ciders with your friends. I could even see coming several night and becoming good friends with the bartender. This isn't a place you come to party but a place you come to socialize with the people around you. I think their prices are fair and habe a large selection of cider. I would go back or recommend!

Google
The Place has a relaxed, neighborhood feel with a great selection of ciders. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, making it easy to find something you’ll like. The space has a warm, inviting cozy atmosphere. It’s a great spot to unwind and enjoy a drink.

Google
Hidden neighborhood gem! The Place is friendly, cozy, and offers a great selection of cider, beer, and wine. There's a ton of beautiful plants and comfy chairs up front that make for a super inviting spot to have a drink and read a book. Feeling more social? Pull up a chair at the bar and chat with the bartender and co-owner David. There is also a patio area out front with covered seating if you want to enjoy your drink with some fresh air.

Google
Get a few ciders in this guy and he’ll start quoting Donald Trump. “You can move there” when I said we should have free healthcare and education in America like they do in China. Then he starts going on about his “freedoms” while barking right wing propaganda at me. Literal 1950s Red Scare stuff. Could not offer a source on any of the claims he made, he just said “Google it” and talked to me like I’m an idiot… yikes I get the impression that this is a rich kid who owns a bar because his dad bought it for him. I was going to go back and try to help him out, as he is clearly very out of touch and doesn’t know it - in fact he’s proud of it - but I don’t really want to give him any more of my money. Keep your “freedom”, you lost my business. Bars are no longer for the working class

A beautiful, cozy space tucked away in SE portland with a great selection of cider, small batch brews, and wine. Highly recommended for vintage collectors, plant enthusiasts, and artists.

Google
What a pleasant surprise. Was walking around and came across this garage door open with a bunch of plants, had to check it out. Sat with David one of the two brothers who recently opened the cider bar and had a blast. Great cider selection a few beers and wine. Will be back, this place is awesome!!

Yelp
Great place with a huge variety of ciders. A hidden gem and one of our fav under the radar bars.

Yelp
Loved the vibes. Laid back spot with great ambiance and selection of ciders. The owner David suggested a few great ones and was generous with samples. Especially enjoyed the cozy book nook. Solid place to chill with friends or hang solo with a good book.

Yelp
C'mon! Love this spot. My partner lives in the neighborhood so I go about once a weekend. We usually taste a cider or two, pick one to sip and sit and buy a few beers or ciders to go. The plants are a nice touch. I like the playlists, the bartender is super friendly and chill. Glad this is a new spot to sit in/outside during the pandemic-times. Good place to pup-watch, too, sometimes.

Yelp
Although I didn't have the opportunity to have the whole "experience", their selection of ciders were impressive. They were closed the day I went, but the owner was kind enough to let me browse and purchase. Many of the ciders are from local Oregon farms and the owner helped guide me to what I was looking for. They also offer a small selection of wines and beers.

Yelp
The Place was super fun and cozy. I really liked Bushwhacker's, so I'm glad the cider tradition didn't just die here when they closed. David was super knowledgeable and knew a lot about all of the different drink options. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the broad range of cider options. I didn't even know New Zealand made hard cider!

Yelp
This is a mostly cider taphouse and bar. They have 6 taps at present (two devoted to your beer drinking friend), but the four ciders they have are diverse and super well curated. Prices are solid given you get a real pint (not just bs foam). In the back the stellar curation continues with a pretty phenomenal line-up of hard to get domestic and international bottles that span the dry to funk to slightly sweet spectrum. Great vibe - may be in contention for my new bar.

Yelp
This place is a trip. It's hecka chill and it has a positively European vibe. The Place is like that weirdo dude you met at the hostile after a days hike in wherever and he kinda smells like weed but definitely smells like red wine and patchouli (I like patchouli btw ), and he kinda sashes your way with a grin like he has a secret but he needs to tell you soon or he's going to forget it. And, that secret is pretty low key and you're like, "okay, alright. Right on my dude. " But, yet, at the same time you're still open to entertaining sharing space with him cuz he's got kind eyes ands he seems like he's seen some shit and you're a glutton for the weird. After a couple of glasses, under all of his own recommendations, you two are vibing. Like, whoa. Who would have really thunk it. But, the stories are fun, the laughing is what you need, and environment is chiiiiillllllll. So you keep drinking the wines and enjoying his company and other patrons will chime in here and there. Then before you realize it you've had several bowls of nuts, maybe two too many bottles of wine and the guy you've felt welcomed by is actually the bartender and maybe the owner and now you realize that this is your new Cheers and carry on with a wave and head back home until the next time The Place calls for you.

Yelp
This is the spot of spots if you're looking to enjoy a quality beverage! David is the man, & has great taste! There needs to be more places in the world like this, & I'm going to keep supporting him cause he is super down to earth & welcoming, & the product is the best of the best. He also has a fantastic bottle selection if you want to bring a few home. If you're hungry, get his cheese plate, it is guaranteed to be amazing cheese. I loved it when he told me that he buys what he likes; What he likes is absolutely delicious. This place is 5 stars across the board. Come support a great place & be blown away by the drink selection.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING. Excellent, wide-ranging cider selection and rad atmosphere with plants and outsider art; the owner is extremely well-versed in ciders and has something for every possible taste and preference. If you think you don't like cider (and I thought I didn't until recently) you just haven't been there yet--David's guaranteed to have something for you. Try it!

Yelp
Local GOAT, always dope recommendations and fantastic draft ciders. Must-visit spot in Brooklyn.

Yelp
Loooove this bar. So mellow. Other than the home and the office this is that third place to be. David the bartender is such a love able and unique character. He's nuts but with a heart of gold. The Place is a great relaxing alternative to some loud, dark and uncomfortable dive bar. Great selection of ciders and natural wines. Thanks David! It was great meeting you!

Yelp
This spot is the reincarnation/evolution of the old Bushwacker's Cider, with beer & wine added and a more friendly vibe. Definitely cider-focused, with 4 taps of great cider, plus 6 cooler-doors of cider in bottles from all over the PNW, and some select French and Cali ones thrown in. Very chill space, good music, friendly staff. Long may it thrive!

Yelp
Just stopped by again and had the pleasure of sitting in on the owner leading a reading of Torah portions for high holidays. Amazing to see culture coming back alive in Portland, let's keep in mind diversity ISN'T WEIRD.

Yelp
I was so relieved to see a cider joint replace the previous cider joint. I have been morr than relieved, delighted even, to get to know the Place. The cider selection is a strong representation tr action of local and international ciders. The atmosphere is relaxing, with both indoor and outdoor options. David is perpetually cheerful, offering engaging conversation about the world and suggestions for cider. I hope the Place and David get the support and appreciation they deserve!

Yelp
Great atmosphere with an amazing selection of cider! The bar tender is so fun and the ambience makes you feel warm inside. Let this be your new hangout in the winter especially for a date! There's also beer and wine if you're not into cider! So great!

Arica N.

Yelp
Great cider. Great wine. Great company. It's a nice chill spot and there is outdoor seating for those who don't want to be inside.

Yelp
If you love cider, you've GOT to stop here. They have a great selection of fantastic ciders. I'm so tired of the same mediocre grocery store selections. This place has a good mix of local and imported ciders, all high quality. They have so many things you can't find elsewhere locally. Prices are very fair: they have choices for an everyday drink and choices for a fancy splurge. Staff is super knowledgeable and helpful and friendly. The interior design is also super cute and comfortable.

Alexander S.

Yelp
Very cozy place. Had a great selection of cider that's hard to find at other places. Very friendly service from the owner. Will be back!

Yelp
It's great to have a place with a good cider selection in the neighborhood, and grab & go options, also the staff is super friendly and for those reasons I gave it 5 stars. But it's "nuvo portland" vibe, as I would say, isn't really my kind of thing. The bar has white wash walls, fake plants, and antique furniture.

Laurel L.

Yelp
Amazing selection of ciders , Imported and local beers -served in a relaxed eclectic decor. If you opened a spot to hang with your friends it would probably be like The Place

Yelp
Love this place The place! Big improvement from the bar that was there prior. Great vibes

Yelp
Full disclosure - if I lived locally I wouldn't be writing a review, and I'd be trying to keep this place a secret so I knew I always had a stool waiting for me. Randomly stumbled in during a recent trip out west ... and then stumbled in the next two nights. From my research, The Place is actually the inspiration for Ned Flanders being moved to pen the words: "If it's clear and yella, you've got juice there, fella; if it's tangy and brown, you're in cider town!"

Adriana L.

Yelp
Stopped in for a glass of cider with a girlfriend and we had so much fun here! Drinks were delicious and the atmosphere is great. Bartender was awesome too!

John L.

Yelp
A hidden wonder. The inside has a very open but still cozy feel and their tap is well curated. The bartender is very outgoing and knowledgeable and helped us select from their really decent bottle selection. If you like cider, definitely check them out.

Ron M.

Yelp
Great selection, warm and cozy atmosphere. Great place for a date. Big improvement over the previous bar that was here.

Jon F.

Yelp
Great bar, really excellent cider selection, a lot of stuff that's hard to find. Staff knew their stuff and was helpful In finding new things I haven't tried.
