Ask Eater: Where Are the Best Quiet Happy Hours in Portland? - Eater Portland

"If you’re not specifically seeking a happy hour menu but would enjoy an inexpensive place to snack and drink, a few neighborhood spots come to mind: The Pocket Pub on Northeast 7th is often quiet earlier in the day, and the prices there feel pre-pandemic in certain ways. Cocktails tend to live in the $6 to $12 range, wine glass pours are like $8 or $9, and appetizers are around $10." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

First time back in PDX in five years and went straight to our favorite neighborhood haunt to meet up with a group of old friends. It was even better than we remembered - thanks Jen and team!!

Google
The Pocket Pub is a fantastic, small, comfy, little restaurant and bar. The food is amazing. They use fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Seasonal salads, seasonal toppings on their pizzas, which are the best around. A nice selection of food on the menu, from kids to vegetarians and meat lovers. Comfortable seating, spacious with a covered outdoor patio. A good beer selection and a fully stocked bar and bar seating. The wait staff were friendly, and the food came out quickly, even being quite busy. This place is great and we will be back. Cheers.

Google
Excellent food from appetizers to pizza. Great drinks! Service is okay, some are better than others, and could be a bit friendlier. Nice local spot.

Google
The kind of place you walk into and instantly feel at home. Great food, local beers, and a vibe that’s both laid-back and thoughtful. Bonus: the garlic knots are dangerously good!

Google
Wow. What a little gem that we found by luck. Excellent beers, all appetizers were awesome, service was very warm, place is awesome looking. Can't wait to go there again:)

Finally made it to The Pocket Pub after hearing so many great things — and wow, it did not disappoint! Cozy vibes, amazing pizza, and our server was an absolute gem. Will be back again (and again).

Google
This amazing pizza pub is located on NE 7th Ave, one of the best avenues in Portland. It opened about 10 years ago when I also bought my house. I have an airbnb and always recommend they come here and I recommend you come too! I recommend the meatballs for 1.

Google
Amazing pizza and salad. The crust was perfection and the vibe is cozy. Radicchio salad was so yummy.

Yelp
All of everything was fantastic. Super good drinks. We had the pasta special, wings and most delicious meatballs. The atmosphere is relaxing and welcoming. Perfect for a chill night

Yelp
Pocket pub is a quaint neighborhood restaurant. Great food, selection of cocktails, wine and beer. We love coming here to split a pizza and salad. This time we ordered desert which was a classic Italian cannoli. It was delicious! Service was friendly and helpful. If you haven't been you should check this place out.

Yelp
I took my son with me to enjoy some pizza after seeing yelp reviews. The NA knot toddy was so great on a really cold evening. We had the margarita pizza which was so delicious. I loved the cauliflower appetizer very yummy and I will return for that. The chicken wings were on point as well. It was busy and we arrived early 5:15PM. Got a table inside, we were lucky. The service was prompt. Do not expect a lot of chit chat from the servers unless you're a local, just go for the food. Next time I will bring my hubby to try their cocktails with dinner.

Yelp
We had a great experience at The Pocket Pub. We came on a Monday night around 7pm. There were seating at the bar but because we had minors, we couldn't sit there. Outdoor seating with heat lamps are available but it's Portland in the winter so we waited about 15 minutes for an indoor table. It's not bad at all but the restaurant is small so I can imagine a wait on a Friday night or weekends. The servers were friendly and helpful. The food was great! I'm not normally even a pizza person but being from out of state, Portland is known for their pizza and I can see why. The pizza here is amazing! They also have a large selection of cocktails, mocktails, and craft beers. Street parking was easy in the neighborhood. After our meal, our server gave us gummy pizzas to give to the kids as a treat if we choose. I really appreciate these small thoughtful things a business considers for their guests. We hope to come back the next time we're in town!

Yelp
Definitely a cozy space!! Came around 7pm on a Sunday night. The place was humming but still had tables opened. So no wait. The specialty drink Cold Heat is highly recommended!! The orange shrub and the Ancho chili liqueur really makes the drink hop! The margarita pizza was perfectly made. Warning, it's a thin New York slice type pizza. The kale Caesar was super tasty. Warning: lots of anchovies, which is what gives it the perfect umami. The lasagna was delish. It had the perfect amount of spinach and cheese. The sausage has the right amount of bite. The Mac and Cheese wasn't for me as all the other dishes were so good, I was a little disappointed. But my meal-mate enjoyed it.

Yelp
We ordered meatballs, the mushroom pizza, the mint to be drink & great notion IPA. The meatballs were pork and ground beef with basil and Parmesan sprinkled on top. Delicious and juicy. The sauce was great to drip the crust of the pizza in. The pizza was also tasty, but a little dry. I think I would have preferred a burrata instead of the goat cheese. It needed creaminess. The crust was fantastic- fluffy but crunchy. Service is a bit slow but our server was nice.

Yelp
The food was delicious and very flavorful. The service was on point even with being extremely busy.

Yelp
Loved the food, the drinks and the staff! Would love to put this bar in my Pocket and carry it around with me wherever I go!! 100% will return! Highly recommend!

Yelp
It was a nice night and we were hoping to enjoy dinner outside but unfortunately showed up too late so we ate inside. No big deal, should have just gotten in sooner! We were sat right away and ordered the jalapeño poppers, sausage pizza, and panna cotta. Jalapeño poppers came out piping hot, full of flavor and lots of cream cheese. Sausage pizza was delicious and I could not get over how crispy and light the crust was! Panna cotta was a perfect way to end our meal, nice and light with perfect amount of sweetness.

Yelp
It's the kind of spot you want someone to recommend when you're out of depth in a new city. It's the kind of spot you wish would open up in your own neighborhood. Cozy, welcoming, why not grab a spot at the bar? With kind, beaming service, and inviting aromas reaching out to the patio, there aren't enough superlatives. The jalapeño poppers (as has been mentioned) are outstanding, and worth a trip on their own, but don't miss out on the pizza. It may be tempting with a stacked salads and apps menu, all packed with local and seasonal choices, but seriously: order a pizza. The crust is a gold star among crusts, strong enough to hold a generous spread of toppings, but still snapping and cracking throughout the (I already said cozy) intimate dining room. I'm here for just a few days on this trip, and I'd hoped to try a wide variety of locations, but I'm stuck, you see. I didn't try the wings. I didn't try the panna cotta. The other places will understand; I'll try to swing by them next time I'm around.

Yelp
wings took about 30 minutes to make but they were the best thing we had here so i dont really mind hehe. the pizza crust was notably good and flavorful and the rest of the pizza itself was alright- it needed more salami tbh. we also got a caesar salad but did not like the leaf choice. the kale stems were too much and the dressing was meh outdoor seating was great, just a bit buggy. service was on the slower side but there was only server for the entire outdoor area sooo... i saw lots of other ppl get foccia bread and it looked reall good....
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
Oh boy, helluva pizza, with some very tasty focaccia to match. The outdoor seating area was also a very nice vibe. Super nice folks serving as well, which rounds it all out. Definitely a must-try!
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
Delicious pizza. And don't forget the salted caramel rice crispy treat. It fills up fast on the weekends. W

Yelp
Quaint little spot that has little more than salads and pizza and adult beverages for anyone's taste. We ordered the prosciutto pizza which has a garlic sauce on it with goat cheese and a honey drizzle. The service is quick and extremely good.

Robert D S.

Yelp
Enjoyed the vintage charm and ambiance, service was very quick, we each had a pizza which I enjoyed and my companion thought was the best he's had in Portland.

Yelp
Downloaded Yelp just to leave this review. Adorable, hidden gem in downtown Portland. To start, the service was incredible. Waiters made great recommendations and were very attentive. All of the drinks were excellent. Food was great. Would highly recommend the prosciutto pizza and the bacon pizza. Anyone looking for an incredible spot in downtown Portland, this is your spot!

Yelp
Atmosphere, food, drinks and the amazing service. Jennifer and Kara, owners have put their heart, soul, and creativity into this neighborhood place Kudos!

Yelp
Dinner was Terrific, service UnWelcoming, Owner, Bartender & Staff . . . I'd suggest Home Delivery . . . !

Yelp
Especially Portland little Portland pub. Been around a long time and well worth the visit. Great food, good drinks and a fantastic atmosphere. Highest recommendation from me.

Cassidy C.

Yelp
This place is good but something I wish I'd known: I would not call this a pub! It's a nicer place, a sit-down, full-service restaurant. Pizza was pretty good but honestly I would t go back. There are less expensive options that are just as good or better.
google avatar

Josh K.

Yelp
We live around the corner and visit about once a week for a fun dinner. Everything is tasty, the rotating pastas are not to be missed. I especially like the rice crispy bars too. The ambiance is warm and cozy, the staff is friendly and the outside seating is great in the summer months. If you are looking for a chill vibe with approachable food, this place fits the ticket.

Victor B.

Yelp
Fantastic food, great service! My girlfriend and I tried this place for the 1st time last night, Usually when you go out, you always have at least one thing you are ok with but.....this place everything we ate was fantastic! The staff was friendly, outgoing , fast and efficient . As stated when you look them up it's a very cozy inviting place. Will definitely be going back to try more on the menu!!

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Excellent food and stand out service! Love their pasta! Definitely going back! Small space tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. Perfect atmosphere!

Yelp
Best kept secret in Portland. Amazing cocktails. Fantastic pizza, and I dream about those jalapeño poppers.
google avatar

Yelp
great food and good vibes in the Northeast area their pizza and drinks are fresh and inventive and inexpensive they make their own infused liquor for unusual cocktails if you are in the mood great beers and salads check out the menu on Yahoo

Yelp
Awesome evening again at this place. Caesar, wings, poppers, sausage pizza. Outside table with great people watching. Keep up the good work, Jen!

Yelp
GREAT little neighborhood pub with awesome food, drinks, and service. This place is walkable for me so I will definitely be making this a staple. I took a friend here and we shared their rotating seasonal pizza. This one had Soppressata, Braised Radicchio, Olive, Caramelized Onion, Fresh Mozzarella, Provolone, and EVOO for $20. The "Knotts" (it's at 7th and Knott) are a great starter but I want to go back and try their Hot Pocket starter! I'm a big Old Fashioned fan and their Funk's Old Fashioned was awesome! Everything was delicious and tasty so if you haven't been here give this place a shot!

Yelp
Love this place I'm in local and haven't looked back. Mac & cheese is delicious as well as everything else food is really good, drinks a nice, customer service is amazing

Yelp
Came here on a day we couldnt get into Ken's and it did not disappoint at all. I was looking for some unique pizzas with a good salad and cocktail to go with it and thats what I got! The place is small and unassuming, cozy maybe, and the food was delicious. They have a nice selection of salads, pizzas and cocktails. I especially liked the seasobal pizza we got we got with sooppressata, olives, and radicchio. The pizza crust was on the oiler side... but it made it tasty! I don't usually like dry crusts so it was good for me.

Yelp
Popped into this cool little bar for some pre-Blazers food and drink. Great location for it, as it's only about 5 minutes from Moda. First off, it had a great atmosphere. Would be great for a date night or just a couple drinks with a friend. We got the chicken wings, sausage pizza, and meatball pizza. The sausage pizza was great, perfectly cooked and had flavor all over it. Definitely recommend. Overall, this place was perfect for what we were looking for. Great food, convenient location, and reasonable prices. Would most definitely return and try out some more menu items.

Yelp
Can The Pocket Pub please relocate to Los Angeles? My brother lives within walking distance of this place and I decided to grab some food here while I waited for him to get off work. Little did I know that my experience here was one of the best I've had to date while visiting Portland. I grabbed a seat at the bar shortly after they opened on a Monday night. The amazingly kind bartender immediately greeted me and gave me a menu. I went with the Pinky Swear because anything with Gin is magical. I then asked her what her favorite starter and pizza was and she told me the Jalapeño poppers and Prosciutto Pizza. I ordered them both and the rest is history. The poppers were not only beautifully presented, but also tasted phenomenal. The drizzle of honey on top was awesome and I devoured them instantly. All of the reviews here say that the pizza is incredible and they are most definitely right. The crust is perfectly crispy and still doughy; one of the best pizzas I've ever had! Everything on the pizza was balanced appropriately and none of the toppings or sauces overpowered the other. I then topped off my indulgent meal with the Panna Cotta. What a great choice! The balsamic cherries were to die for and I'm already looking forward to my next visit at The Pocket Pub!

James S.

Yelp
Super cute spot! Nice outdoor space, really good pizza and wings. The pour on the tap beer was just how I like it. Can't wait to go back and try different menu items. Can't recommend enough. The owner is super nice and works her butt off! Go Pocket Pub!

Yelp
Love this tiny neighborhood pub! On NE 7th, one store down from NE Knott, this is the perfect spot for Happy Hour (4-6:00 and 10:00-close), a casual dinner or drinks & appetizers. Surprisingly, there are plenty of seats at the bar inside and lots of booths and tables. I love sitting out front where they have picnic tables and smaller tables with chairs. Perfect on a warm evening. After driving by for years, we decided to stop in one night after seeing a movie. So glad we did! Service was friendly and efficient - thanks, Sonny! And I just loved the atmosphere and vibe. Even though it wasn't happy hour, the prices and pours of wine made me happy! My date had the Liquid Sunshine cocktail, swapping the bourbon for vodka, and loved it. So refreshing. Planning on coming back for their jalapeño poppers that include Apple in the cream cheese filled jalapeño, and wrap it in prosciutto. Yum! The Mac&cheese is calling my name along with the brussel sprouts! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Came here because of the positive yelp reviews. It didn't disappoint. Strong drink, but I like that. Lol we had the bacon Mac and cheese...delicious and a sausage pizza. Spicy and delicious!.

Helen S.

Yelp
No nonsense and good service, great neighborhood vibe, really great pizzas (from someone who's picky about pizza). I live in the neighborhood and I see people of all ages eating there. It's a nice, normal place. Not obnoxious new-Portland, yet not divey or run down. IDK why another reviewer said this place is downtown though... it's fully in a residential neighborhood. It's the only restaurant for a few blocks other than the coffee shop right next to it. Must be from outta town :)
google avatar

Shauna M.

Yelp
A fantastic little neighborhood pub. It's chill and unassuming, but don't confuse that with ordinary and boring. Both the pizza and cocktails are unique and flavorful and can hold their own against any of the trendier spots in town. I especially enjoy the tea infused bourbons they use in their cocktails, and I am addicted to their spinach pizza. Spinach, jalapeños, and blue cheese. Yeah you read that right. It's a completely new flavor profile I had never had before, but it's perfection. I can't decide what part of the pizza I like the most, because every ingredient stands on its own yet at the same time they all work so well together. It's honestly one of the most inventive and tasty pizzas I've had in years. The crust is also great. Not too thick, not too thin, just a good base to allow the toppings to shine. Limited beer selection both on draft and in bottles and cans, but it's enough to get by. Wine too. Be sure to check the specials on the board!

Yelp
Waited far too long to review, so detailed memory is gone... We took out pizza from this place when we were in town for a college visit. I remember thinking it was great. Sadly, that's about as much as I can recall.
google avatar

Yelp
Fun location, walkable, and mellow! We are visiting PDX from Washington and randomly found the pocket pub on Yelp. We ate outside and enjoyed a warm spring evening. The drinks were great, and pizza was yummy, and the carrot appetizer was AMAZING. So good we might go back again tonight just for the carrots...
google avatar

Erica G.

Yelp
Great pizzas, had the prosciutto and chicken pizza -- 4.3/5 The drinks pocket tonic 5/5. Had such great flavor and well balanced.
google avatar

Brad L.

Yelp
Been there a few times before Blazer games. Great pizza and the bartender makes great drinks. Nice comfortable place that we look forward to coming back
google avatar

Dina E.

Yelp
My partner loves this place. I'm always hesitant ..we are right by sizzle pie. It's not cheap and it's not quick...but it's damn tasty!! The pizzas are killer. The pockets are filling and so good -- I prefer the broccoli garlic (drool). The sauce. It's the damn sauce!!! I'm so glad I found some good sauce in PDX. THANK YOU!! the meatballs are amaze-balls. It's the sauce. The garlic knots are yummers...and the sauce. Sigh. The chicken wings are bomb, too. Keep doing what you're doing and I'll take that longer walk!
google avatar

Yelp
The boyfriend and I were visiting Portland last month from Las Vegas and decided to pay the "Wishing Tree" a visit. Little did we know that this awesome place was situated between a neighborhood just 5 minutes away! Truly a rare find for us. We only had their drinks. We tried their Villa Wolf Pinot Noir Rosé and the Poema Cava (Sparkling) Spain which was refreshing. After the third round, we noticed we were there for about 2 and a half hours! Not once were we pressured to get food and the owner was outstanding, especially seeing that he was running around helping out his staff. We sat outside on one of the bar tables and enjoyed watching the customers' dogs! Anyways, this was a memorable experience for us. Thank you!
google avatar

Scott D.

Yelp
Was really excited to try this place but from start to finish I felt like I wasn't welcomed. Was going to order food but the service was so off putting I just wanted to leave. TheInvesting in staff training might help.
google avatar

Kevin O.

Yelp
Love this spot. I've tried almost the entire menu and I've yet to be disappointed. It's also a favorite of ours to order in when we have unexpected company for dinner
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for while. I ordered the Brussels sprouts, the Mac and cheese, and the Chicken Pizza. The Brussels Sprouts are delicious. Crispy outside soft inside and the perfect char. The macaroni was nothing special, this wouldn't be the place you order Mac & Cheese but I was curious and I love cavatappi. Sometimes you find delicious sides in unlikely places. This isn't one of them. The Pizza: the flavor was really yummy, the red pepper pesto and olives combine with diced chicken for a salty, creamy deliciousness. Unfortunately, the crust was hard and the pizza in general was over cooked. I'll give this place another try but I'm not impressed for a Tuesday night dinner.
google avatar

Samuel S.

Yelp
Great food and service, will definitely be coming back. Loved sitting on the sidewalk patio, too.
google avatar

Chris Z.

Yelp
This place may go unnoticed, but that is a good thing. It is a HIDDEN GEM in the area and always a great place to go for a pizza and beer. It is small on the inside with a few tables, a couple booths, and then bar seating which gives it a cozy feel. The wine, cocktails, and beer selection is great. The starters, cough, the "Garlic Knots" were FIRE with the "Mornay" dipping sauce. The "Meatballs" were very good, and the "Mac And Cheese" with breadcrumbs on top might be one of the BEST! Take a look at the menu, and make plans to stop in. Definitely recommended.

Timothy S.

Yelp
I love this place. Great pizza. A chill environment. Solid drinks. What else do you need?

Chris J.

Yelp
Great setting and intimate setting. Dropped in for drink before a walk to wonder ball room and left happier.
