The Poe Museum

One of my favorite museums yet. 📚 WOW. Really enjoyed the tour and I am very familiar with Poe but I learned a lot I hadn’t heard before! 💀 The Poe Museum provides spooky vibes 👻 and I loved that the staff had some ghost experiences in the museum! Much bigger than expected! The whole tour and exhibition took us about a little over an hour. The garden area with the fountain was very serene and lots of kitties! 🐈‍⬛ Quality gift shop. Poe writings. ✍️ Bookmarks. 🔖 Pins.

Superb museum experience. As we entered the shop/entrance, we were immediately greeted by helpful and friendly staff. The museum tour is very interesting and had a lot of Poe artifacts. To save time, we decided to listen to the audio tour later. To get through the three main houses, see the courtyard and shop, was about an hour. Even without listening to the tour, we learned a ton from reading to info plaques. The property is stunning. And the cats were a bonus (they were so cute and friendly). The shop is very well curated with cool Poe gifts. Visiting this museum reignited my love of Edgar’s writings. Looking forward to rereading his stories. If you are a Poe fan, this is a must visit. If you aren’t a fan, you will be. "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”

Don’t miss this museum if you are a Poe or literature fan! It is filled with artifacts from Poe’s world and more information about him than I knew. It’s easy to see where his macabre styles came from once you hear his story. This old house is not Poe’s in any way but is the oldest house in Richmond and interesting in itself. The gift store is so well curated! I spent forever just looking at the options. There are also some cute rescue cats around that like a scratch. Finally, the staff is great! Nevermore will you wonder if you love Edgar Allen Poe.

A delightfully macabre way to spend an hour or two, executed completely in the style of the master. All of the displays demonstrate an obvious love of the author's wit and dark humor with creative takes on the art of the museum display. We came away with renewed understanding of one of our favorite writers. Get there and spend your time and treasure on this museum. It is worth it.

We were visiting Richmond briefly and decided to pay The Poe Museum a visit. I knew about Poe from the many popular references but the visit allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of Poe as the person behind his works, his tormented personal life and how he wrote so many masterpieces in his short life. It’s interesting that Poe’s formative years were spent in Richmond, and the museum does a wonderful job of chronicling his time in Richmond, and how the place shaped his thoughts and in turn his work. The museum is neatly organized with separate sections for Poe’s family, relatives, his work, relationships, personal items, manuscripts and so much more. The museum is housed in the Old Stone House, believed to be the oldest remaining original residential structure in Richmond (built mid-1700s). Even though Poe never lived in the Old Stone house, I couldn’t help but feel the presence of Poe in there, and not just because of the two cats(who are quite social and approachable). The Poe Museum seeks to preserve and present the life, writings, and enduring mystique of Edgar Allan Poe—especially his connection to Richmond—and to contextualize them within early 19th-century Richmond life, and it does it quite brilliantly. I was intrigued to see the personal items of Poe such as a lock of his hair, waistcoat, walking stick(and other items) preserved, doing an honor to his memory. I didn’t know that there were many theories surrounding Poe’s death. The museum explains those theories wonderfully, which is a treasure if you’re a nerd like me. The museum’s layout spans multiple connected buildings, each with thematic focus (life, death, legacy) and supplemented by changing exhibits. The gift store has a sizeable collection of symbolic “Poe-y”things(ranging from T-shirts to cups and much more). The museum offers self-guided tours, audio guides, and occasional guided tours. I highly recommend visiting this great Virginia landmark and educating yourself on the wonderfully tormented soul that Poe was. Allow yourself 1-2 hours to explore the museum. A dedicated parking lot is available here, and you can also park on the street. Entry charges were 12 dollars per person when we visited in September 2025.

It was a wonderful museum situated in an alcove of old buildings reminiscent of Poes time, many of his personal artifacts, family items, and artwork. Wonderful experience and well worth the admittance fee!

One of the most beautiful places we have been!! The shrine is my favorite and Poe was my kids favorite!! My oldest found the perfect book (hes not usually a reader). We will be back just to visit the garden and resident cats 🧡

A friend and I visited last week. This is a small museum that tells the story of Poe's life and has many artifacts from his life. I really enjoyed learning about his life and especially seeing his monogrammed pocketwatch that was the inspiration of "The Tell-Tale Heart". It doesn't take too long to walk through the three buildings and garden, and is a great place to visit in Shockoe Bottom. The gift shop also has some cool items for sale.

You ever wonder - How was Edgar Allen Poe's personal life? Question answered! I am a fan of museums, history, and poetry. So, this really was a treat. I made it past the last entrance time but the staff was accomodating and allowed me to enter. The museum was both a fun and informative experience. I learned a few extra nuggets from the staff as well :) Although the museum is self paced, at the end - the staff excitedly shared personal stories (like the resident black cats and how they came to live there). Please visit if you are in Richmond, VA

Twelve bucks for an adult, six for a kid. not really a whole lot to do here. there is a place to read in one of the buildings, probably the best part of it. be careful letting your children walk around, there is a cat that will scratch you and also propaganda inside the library.

It is a very interesting and creepy place. As soon as I came in through the door, the creepiest black cat with the meanest green eyes greeted us. I had an instant creep. Turns out there isn't 1 but several black cats, of which one of them jumped at me in the room with his writing table, what looks like a crypt etc. Almost made me lose my soul. There isn't too much to see, but it provides interesting insights including the few words he came up with, his handwritten letter begging for money, his critique turned enemy writing s**t about him when he himself is the biggest creep who slept with his 40 day old corpse wife... lots of weird things.. I am glad I came here, but it was odd nonetheless.

This is a small museum with 3 houses/places to visit. All the houses are airconditioned. No need for reservations. Went on a hot Sunday afternoon. Letters, books, furnitures, things belonging to Edgar Allan Poe and those related to him are on display. There's a nice garden at the middle with Poe's bust. The gift shop sells books, magnets, toys, posters, shirts, etc. Would not say it's a must see but if you have an hour to spare, you can learn a lot about his life and interesting facts.

The Poe Museum is my favorite Richmond Museum and not just because it has cats. In addition to its courtyard greeters Edgar and Tib,, The Poe has knowledgeable human employees. As expected the museum displays contains much Poe memorabilia both personal and literary. They also host educational and entertaining events. I'm a fan of themed Unhappy Hours and Poe's birthday bash.

On our way home from Washington, D.C., we stopped at Poe Museum. I've always been an avid fan and thought how it'll be great to visit his museum. GPS took us directly to it. It's in a great location. There's a private parking lot for the museum. You can also park on the street if the parking lot's full if permitted. The museum itself comprises of the oldest house in Richmond, two more small buildings and a garden surrounded by the buildings. The ambience itself brings you back to the bygone era. The staff at the souvenir shop's friendly and helpful. The souvenir shop's stocked with everything Poe. I ended up buying a refrigerator magnet. I buy magnets of places I've been. Glad we stopped and paid homage to this great writer and poet. I'm just saddened by his tragic life. It was crowded when we went and felt rushed. It would be nice to come back during weekday so we can spend more time.

It is a small museum, but a must visit for any Poe fan! The main part of the museum is located inside the oldest residential building in Richmond - although Poe himself never lived there! There are two other buildings with additional exhibits, as well as some beautiful gardens with friendly cats. The gift shop has a ton of Poe goodies. For any literary fan, goth, or history lover, you should check it out. They do have a small gravel parking lot, too.

Very interesting museum filled with memorabilia and descriptions. Had a wonderful time perusing all the exhibits. I do feel like the enchanted garden area could use some love- but overall enjoyed my time here.

This is the museum for me. I'm detailed oriented so it's easy to get overwhelmed with sights and info but the Poe museum is Just the right size. Great information and interesting artifacts that paint an informative picture of Poe's life. Only suggestion would be to have more direction as far as where to start reading in each room to have some chronological order. Liked that there was a free audio tour- only wish I had brought my airpods .

Nice way to kill some time in the city. The museum offers a self guided tour that takes about 45 minutes if you listen to the entire audio tour. I suggest you bring earbuds if you want to listen to the audio tour. There are 3 different buildings to look at. They all have displays about Poe's life. There is a garden in the center of the buildings. At the end of the tour we did spend some money in the gift shop. Fun afternoon.

My sister and I came here with a friend on a whim after dropping off another friend. The lady working inside the ticket office/gift shop was friendly and helpful. There is an audio tour option, but we mostly navigated without audio. We wandered the buildings and grounds for a little more than an hour. Everything was well kept, and I would definitely return, as I didn't get to read a majority of the plaques. Reading about Poe's life and death was eye-opening. The black cats around the grounds were used to people being around. I snagged a photo of one. (I had to open the door for the cat, and another came in right after.) The gift shop was lots of fun, and we found goodies to bring back home for family.

This is a refresh of my last review of this very cool spot. (Which, by the way, happened to be my 1000th review on yelp!) So, yup. Still cool. Still macabre. Still interesting. Much busier this time. Same sweet cats, Edgar and Pluto. And if you read my last review, I am happy to say no harm was done by the door that maybe should not have been latched during the construction project. I really needed another two hours here to get the full experience, but we were on a tight schedule and had to keep it moving. Love love love this place. Don't worry. I'll be back evermore.

Museum is a great stop while heading somewhere else, Williamsburg in our case. Only $10 for about an hour of time walking around the beautiful grounds and reading some really interesting history. As a history teacher myself, I found everything super fascinating. I will say, though... the staff does not add to the experience. They're awkward and won't make eye contact with you; willing you to move on without so much as a quick chat. As a mom of an autistic child, I always like to give the benefit of the doubt... but when the entire staff is like that, it begins to detract from the experience because you feel like you're being hosted by some awkward teenagers, when in fact they're all grown adults. BUT, don't let that stop you even if you have the faintest interest in Poe!

I think Egar would be proud to know the city of Virginia didn't annihilate his house and property for some Condo Developer . I actually thought the museum was elegant and aristocratic in the portrayal of a man so few today know anything about. I sure learned a lot about him. From his actual journals to clothing to buildings. Bring a coffee and a breakfast sandwich with you, sit in the courtyard, and absorb the ambiance. Admission 10 bucks per person, they take cash and credit. Free parking lot on the premises which holds up to 11 vehicles. 2 hour parking in the street pay at the meter will cost $4 bucks so come early THE REVIEW GURU LONG ISLAND NY

I was surprised to find this museum on Yelp since I always associated Poe with Baltimore. Turns out that he moved around a lot throughout his life and his time in Richmond (childhood to young adulthood) was the longest he had lived in a single place. **There is a free audio tour of the museum on their website that you can access on your phone. If you plan to do so, don't forget to bring your ear buds! Accessibility: there is an accessible museum entrance from the main street but it doesn't lead through the gift shop where you pay for admission and it needs to be opened by a staff member. I would call ahead if you are planning to visit with a wheelchair or stroller. There is a step up into the museum buildings but I saw a portable ramp, which I'm assuming museum staff use for guests with mobility-related access needs. I would also call ahead if you're planning to visit with a service animal, as there are two rescue cats that roam the museum courtyard. Service animals are of course allowed but they note on their website that they appreciate advanced notice to warn their felines. I don't recall how accessible the restroom was. The museum has a small off-street parking lot next to it but you may need to plan for street parking. You enter the gift shop where you pay for your admission. There are restrooms behind the checkout area and there are doors to the outside towards the back of the hallway, in case you need to use the restroom while coming from the other end of the building. Otherwise, you'll exit the gift shop through the doors behind you (to your left if you're facing the gift shop street entrance) and then make a loop through the various historic buildings that house artifacts from different stages of Poe's life. I like that it's organized that way--not just chronologically but separate building for different life stages. The buildings are quite small and it can get cramped but there are lots of signs to read while you're waiting to get an up close view of the artifacts. Keep an eye out for the crow stickers on the walls with fun facts too! I don't think there are any other museums dedicated to Poe in the US/the world--just statues and monuments. Even if you aren't familiar with his works, it's a fascinating insight into the culture and society of the times. For example, did you know that the profession of acting was looked down upon and women who were frail and dying due to tuberculosis were seen as beautiful/trendy? Lots of the artifacts and placards are on higher shelves/behind glass displays and the building spaces can get quite cramped so this may be best for older children rather toddlers/young children. The building on Poe's young adulthood has a staircase from his actual home that leads up to a second story reading area. It has lots of books related to Poe and his works (including children's books) and also some modern Poe-themed artworks. There is a chest in the corner where you can take a poem written by a visitor or leave a poem for another visitor to take. There was a bunch and some were quite funny. Don't forget to keep an eye out for Edgar and Pluto, two black rescue cats that roam the courtyard of the museum! They are friendly to pet but I wouldn't disturb them if they're relaxing/sunbathing. There was a book in the gift shop featuring them and other local rescue animals (including dogs, horses, birds, and turtles!).

The Poe Museum is a great stop for Edgar Allan Poe fans. It's full of interesting exhibits about his life and work, though it's not very long. Still, it's a worthwhile visit for anyone interested in his legacy!

Finally made it to the Poe museum. My daughter aka, Mini me, has discovered the loveliness of the macabre genre. So, we made a day trip here to Richmond. I wasn't sure what to expect, but you walk in to the gift shop/main room filled with all things Poe. After purchasing tickets, you grab a map and go explore the 3 smaller buildings at your own pace. There is an audio option, but we skipped it as many of the objects and photos had very descriptive information near/next to it. I was really surprised on the back story of Edgar Allen Poe and all the people in his life I didn't know about (I'm pre-WWW.com when I first started reading his books). The museum has some really interesting items of Edgar Allen Poe in it's possession- like his childhood bed. I really enjoyed the back stories surrounding including why his middle "name" is "Allen". For the price, I thought it was fun for fans of Poe. My daughter loved the 2 black-ish cats that roam the garden. The whole experience took about an hour.

What an amazing place I learned so much about the man spent a few hours walking around the museum so interesting to learn more about the man. Thank you for the experience and the learning .

Cute little museum with a ton of artifacts, two cute cats, and helpful employees. We called ahead to see if they were opened (we weren't sure if website was updated since tickets aren't until sept.) they were so we headed over. If you are a fan of literature, horror, art, and tragedy or even older antiques and architecture then this would be worth a visit. Thank you!

This was a fun visit when I was I was in Richmond. The Poe Museum is a small museum dedicated to the life of Edgar Allan Poe, a famous Virginian and even more famous poet and dark writer. For all things spooky or just a fan of Poe and in the area, it's worth a visit. We visited on a Saturday in the late morning and the place was actually pretty busy, with many other groups checking out the museum. Admission was only $9 and the tour is self-led, as you're handed a map and are off your way. Since the museum is small, it was easy to get around and navigate, following the map and order of the buildings. There are three small exhibits and a garden. Inside the museum, you'll learn more about Poe's childhood, upbringing in Virginia, career and writings. There's even a black cat that will walk around the grounds, which just adds to the mystery of Poe. You can take pictures inside and spend however long you'd like. Though, it will only take you an hour max to visit. Free street parking was plenty. There's a bookstore and gift shop for some souvenirs. Glad to have checked out and learned more about Edgar Allan Poe while in Richmond.

We had a blast on our trip to the Poe Museum. Our entire Richmond trip revolved around making it here and I'm so glad we made it a priority. I'm an ELA teacher who loves teaching a Poe Unit, so this was truly an experience for me. Not only was the museum super educational, but the gift shop had some awesome resources. Parking is a breeze, the employees are super friendly and helpful, and the property cats made my entire day. Make sure to check this place out!

Enjoyable experience with a cool gift shop. Lots of information all around so pay attention to signs (some are quite small). Highly recommend for the Poe fans and non-fans alike.

Visiting the Poe Museum was our anniversary activity this year and it was interesting and enjoyable even for people like us who have only really had a peripheral admiration for Poe. This museum is thoughtfully designed and gives the feeling of an original Poe residence (it is not). Lots of tokens of his lifetime and comprehensive placards detailing the rise and demise of this macabre man provide a real understanding of the lasting impact his works have had on every generation during and since his death. We love meeting the two resident black cats, Pluto and Raven (I think??) and visiting the gift shop afterwards for a 1000 piece puzzle on the theme of Poe's writings, as well as Poe inspired magnetic poetry. Highly recommend this museum to ALL.

Ok, I was a initially a tad disappointed because I thought it would be bigger. But after reflecting back on my visit, I would rate this as 4 or 5 stars. First of all, it is very reasonably priced! $7 per person with a AAA membership, $9 without. Children are cheaper, but I can't recall how much. The museum is organized by rooms according to different periods of Poe's life. If you have your phone, there is a step by step audio tour guide that you can listen to as you explore the museum. Each room is clearly marked by number so you know what part of the audio tour guide to play. There are two black cats roaming around the outdoor courtyard, both very friendly, and both add to the ambiance. The gift shop is small, but has a variety of Poe themed items to choose from: I went with a very cool Poe coffee mug. Pro tip: As opposed to the audio tour guide (or in addition to it), look up "The Grimm Life Collective" on YouTube and find their video on the Poe Museum. This is a great video that walks you through the museum and points out the most interesting artifacts. I enjoyed this video better than the official audio guide! We were in town for a soccer tournament and had a few hours to kill, so we drive 25 minutes to get to the Poe Museum. I'm glad we did and would definitely visit again next time we are in the area.

This was our first time in Richmond and we needed local places to visit in the days leading to GalaxyCon. My boyfriend chose this museum, and granted I'm not the most knowledgeable of Poe's works, it was nice to learn more about his life, his place in history, and to see his and his loved ones' belongings. Our visit lasted about an hour. You start at the gift shop where they give you a map to follow. I loved that the rooms were well-air-conditioned and that the overall experience was not overwhelming. Be sure you visit the reading room, spin the wheel of death by the restrooms to see how you'd die in a Poe story, and keep an eye out for the two adorable black cats roaming the property (which we did see). ‍ ‍

What fascinating place! It's small but really intriguing. I learned so much about Poe and his life. They offer an audio tour but unless you wear ear buds, don't bother. There are several buildings and a lovely courtyard. Signage inside on the displays is detailed and informative. I'd like to go back and spend ever more time there. Very interesting place.

Great museum: relatively small but well curated with several items from Poe's past including some precious things like his childhood bed. There is a black cat named Edgar who will follow you around a bit. None of it is part of any original Poe housing but it is a historic building. The gift shop has some fun items. Nice free aido tour as well.

Great way to spend a couple hours in Richmond. Admission is only $10. Total to go through the museum taking your time is about an hour. Interesting history and a really great collection of Poe related artifacts. If you're a Poe fan it's a must.

We visited The Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia in June 2022. This is a small and interesting museum. The museum costs $9 per person and they also have discounted rates. They have a nicely organized gift shop where you enter and pay the admission fee. The museum itself consists of several small houses that you can wander through at your own pace. The interiors of the museum were kind of gritty to be honest. This isn't the Smithsonian for sure. But it is still a neat experience. We parked a good walking distance in a public paid parking lot and walked to get the the museum. The museum does have clean restrooms. The interior courtyard is a pretty space. Overall I am happy that I visited The Poe Museum. I am a resident of Baltimore, Maryland where we are steeped in all things Poe. And I was also a goth in my teen years. Given all of these things, The Poe Museum felt required for me. However this is a once and done for me. I fully support what this little museum is doing. I hope they freshen up the exhibit spaces a little bit for future visitors.

I was in Richmond for business and had a couple of hours to spare before heading to the airport. We discovered the Poe Museum was close by and decided to check it out. It's small, a perfect size to get through in less than an hour, 3 buildings and a courtyard garden. You don't need to be a huge Edgar Allen Poe fan but most people are atleast aware of his work to be able to appreciate the history and enjoy references to some of his work like The Raven. Plus I personally do like visiting historical sites. Poe didn't actually live in this historic building but did live in Richmond. Though there is some of his own furniture along with many artifacts inside. The house is the oldest standing structures in Richmond. We were there midweek with no crowds, actually for a while we were the only ones there. I'm assuming now with COVID they have restrictions on numbers of visitors inside etc. Nice spot to spend some time and maybe pick up a bit of knowledge and appreciation for Poe.

This was such a great experience and much larger of an exhibit than what it looked like on the outside. I like how all the little houses were sectioned by periods of Poe's life. There were several personal artifacts that were owned by Poe which was interesting. I liked that they had an audio tour with clearly marked numbers around the exhibitions to give you a deeper experience in learning about his life.

Neat little museum. It is self guided - yes there are cats on location! We found 2 black cats resting or staying cool under some shrubs in the garden. The gift shop is full of neat items. The cost is minimal and smack in the middle of lot of other places in Richmond.

Although I was a bit underwhelmed with the location, the artifacts and possessions being display did have a very interesting appeal. The audio tour was enjoyable if you have headphones. It wasn't too crowded but they were having an event in the courtyard which prevented me from sitting and enjoying the moment. It was one of my must see destinations while visiting Virginia.

An interesting collection of Poe memorabilia and a number of captions that explain the difficult lift that Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) led. Author of the famous The Tell-Tale Heart and The Pit and the Pendulum and many others, the museum shows several artifacts and items from his life. It was rather crowded when we were here and so it was about an hour or so to tour the property and view all of the items. $9 entry or free with the Attractions Guest Pass booklet. Learned a lot about Poe from this museum. However, it was quite small and cramped making it hard to enjoy fully when so many people were there as well.

I love Edgar Allen Poe and was excited to be able to visit a museum about him. This museum is up a block and over a block from the Holocaust museum. Tickets have to be purchased and you will be allowed through the first building on the hour or half hour. The museum consists of 3 buildings surrounding a beautiful garden: gift shop, early life building (the oldest house in Richmond), a building abut his early career and a building about his later life and death. Visitors are able to read explanations about his early life, work, relationships and death. Interesting to see a lot of furniture from the Allen home of which he grew up in. Do pay attention to the little ravens giving tidbits of Poe's life. The garden is beautiful and guarded by two beautiful black cats. The gift shop is a little spendy ($28 for a tshirt) but do provide cool souvenirs.

We had such a great time at the Poe Museum. We learned a lot about his life, work, and death. It's small but well-curated and the gift shop has a good selection.

If you are a fan of Poe, you will want to visit this Museum. With so many historical details, this is a can't miss Richmond site. You will also be privy to the oldest home in Richmond. I was taking a tour group around and Poe was the in thing. Don't miss all the historical family facts around the walls. While this museum won't take a lot of time, (1 hour and you have seen everything) read every card on the wall to understand who Poe really was.

One of the best museums I've ever been to. The atmosphere of the garden is great -- you forget you are in the middle of the city. The amount of well-preserved vital objects and memorabilia of Poe's life is astounding. His story is extremely interesting and you will likely be invested even if you have not read any of his work. Definitely a great place to stop if you find yourself with an extra couple hours in Richmond. Side note: Loved seeing the resident cats as well! Super sweet.

Excellent. Poe fans have gone above and beyond collecting Poe artifacts and memorabilia. The snippets of information that go along with each piece were so well done and educational. The museum exudes reverence and care for Edgar Allan Poe. Loved it.

Don't let the Poe Museum's small footprint fool you; pound for pound, this is one of the most informative museums I've ever been to in my life! Appropriately located in the "Old Stone House" (built c. 1740), the Poe Museum casts light on Edgar Allan Poe's life from birth to death and beyond. You'll learn about his surprisingly athletic youth (did you know he once swam *six miles* in the James River...a record that still stands to this day?) to his various relationships to his celebrated works. It was incredible learning about the background of his stories, as well as his influence on various genres (as well as the English language itself; according to the museum, Poe created over 1,100 words--including "multicolor" and "tintinnabulation"). Parts of the exhibit include the mantelpiece and even staircase from one of his childhood homes, his trunk and walking stick, the penknife he used to sharpen his pencils, and much more. Entrance is $9, which I thought was very reasonable. The gift shop is a little pricey, but well-stocked. Overall, I strongly recommend it to any fan of Poe's!

The Poe museum was an outstanding expereince! Upon entering your promptly greeted, once you complete your payment and recieve your sticker/pass, youll be given a time of when your tour will begin, our guide was what made the experience so fantastic as you could tell he is 100% into what hes doing, there are so many fantasic peices of Poe history at this museum and the way they have them layed out is fantastic, id highly recommend visiting the Poe museum. PRO TIP: bring your headphones as they have you scan a QR code with your phone that gives you the option to do a audio tour as they only currently due self tours.
