Yelp
3.5 stars. A beautiful and elegant restaurant and lounge, with a classy vibe, though I couldn't shake off the awareness it is just a little ancillary offshoot of a huge catering hall. Although the advertised open time is 4:00 PM, when we arrived at 4:40 the bartender and others were doing stocking and other prep-type work that really detracted from the atmosphere. Big cardboard boxes on top of the bar, you know, and a feeling they were still cleaning up from the night before. He was polite and friendly enough, and we were served our drinks promptly but were also advised they don't start serving food till 5:00 on Saturdays. We further learned there are times that they would be closed off for a cocktail hour in advance of a scheduled reception or other event. But, most weekdays they are also open for lunch. Huh? Website doesn't mention that? Well they don't promote it but they have a lot of regulars who come in. ??
Based on all the above, the hours seem to be in a state of flux, so this is not a spur of the moment place but you'd better call ahead to find out the situation. Which is too bad, as this is the type of place I'd love to just drop in.
Things were settled down by 5:30 or so, the barkeep set out nice baskets of chips and pretzels, and about 9 more people had come in to sit at the bar. All were casually dressed as were we. I had the Finocchio salad (a lovely flavor and texture blend as well as presentation; very creamy and tangy, though they really should throw in a small baguette or something to help push it on the fork) and the Sea Scallop small plate- which is a solitary, but enormous, scallop atop whipped potatoes in truffle sauce. Sprig of fresh dill was the perfect contrast flavor pop. I think I'd love a larger version of this dish.
Richard had 1/2 dozen oysters that he found delightful - all of them big, but at $2.50 apiece we thought overpriced. These were followed by the star of the show-lamb chop. Exquisite, medium rare, delicious and an extremely satisfying small plate that he'd definitely order again!
I enjoyed my Vodka Collins which was strong and tasty, but I was ticked that it was served in a stem glass not a Collins glass.
The entrance to the restaurant is a large open doorway right off the main entry foyer. Since it's not closed off, I found that sitting at the bar I was very aware of the formally-dressed partygoers of all ages coming and going to their reception or whatever, which only amplified that feeling I described at the beginning. Maybe the lounge regulars get used to it? Maybe we just picked an awkward time to visit. Would like to give it another try maybe on a weeknight.
