Porterhouse Grill & Rooms | Best places to stay in Oxford |

"From the unmissable matt black frontage to the navy-walled bedrooms, dotted with vintage photographs of the city, this is an archetypal boutique hotel – hip and stylish, with a pleasing sense of good old-fashioned indulgence. As the name suggests, dinners definitely lean towards the carnivorous end of things; hearty steaks, dry-aged in-house for up to 42 days, make up most of the menu, but there are fish and veggie options. This isn’t the place to choose if you want leafy gardens or firelit lounges, but foodies, and those looking for a no-nonsense, super-comfortable stay, will love it. Ideal for a car-free break, the Porterhouse is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the station, with all of Oxford’s main sights easily reachable on foot. " - Annabelle Thorpe

This is a stylish and delicious restaurant! Had lunch there today with a friend - the steak sandwich with packed with thin steak slices, mushroom relish and salad and was yummy. The accompanying chips were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - very good! The smoked mackerel pate had loads of flavour, and came with slightly pickled carrot sticks and cucumber slices, plus sourdough toast - a lovely combination of flavours. The coleslaw and the walnut, Stilton and lettuce salads were brilliant. The puddings - chocolate fondant and sticky toffee pudding, both with very good ice cream - were excellent. All the food showed that there is a chef in the kitchen, who cares about providing their customers with a really good experience, and has very good judgment in combining ingredients for tasty results. The Porterhouse is tucked away in Mill Street, just on the Botley Road side of the train station. It is a hidden gem. It deserves to be recognised as one of Oxford’s best restaurants. The room is elegant and sophisticated, but also welcoming and warm. The service is warm and friendly.

I would like to thank very much Mariana, Sue and the nice lady with the blue hair for beeing so nice with us during our stay. They are very kind and very efficient. They are Porterhouse's soul. The hotel is very beautifull and clean and I dare to say that porterhouse's restaurant is the best place to eat in Oxford, specially if you are looking for real food. Keep the great work. I hope to get back someday.

THE BEST STEAK I HAVE EVER HAD FULL STOP!!!! Major congratulations to the Chef, steak was superbly cooked!! Mine medium well and my Brother in Laws medium rare, both steaks cooked to perfection and a picture perfect match for any steak cooking chart/diagram! It was tender, juicy and melted in my mouth and the portion of chips that came with it was HUGE!!! There were 5 in our group 4 adults and a 14yr old child (no kids menu!!). My Brother in Law and I had one Côte De Boeuf each, My Mother Sister and Niece had the poussin. They also had Chess, which was a welcome distraction while waiting for our food, we almost managed to finish our game before the food came. Regarding service, I do not go to Steakhouses or Steak Pubs very often and the Steak was spread across two menus which I found a bit confusing, I must admit our Waitress didn't do a great job of explaining how the steak ordering process worked very well so my Sister had to step in and explain it to me..... perhaps me being a bit dense.... Prices were a bit higher than I expected and steak prices are not shown on the menu as far as I remember (could be wrong!). Location is a Pub not a Steakhouse as some reviews have pointed out hence my surprise at the prices. However the food really was EXCELLENT and more or less worth the price IMO. For 4 adults and a child with one starter no alcohol and no pudding the bill was £200+, each steak was £75!! Décor was nice, interior had a relaxed Bar Saloon type feel. Overall 4 stars due to price and service but 10 stars for the delicious food and ample portions!! Would visit again! Much better than the Vegan pub down the road!!!!!....... Vegan pub, who ever heard of such a thing!.... LOL

Went to the Porter House for my Birthday lunch with my husband and parents. It was outstanding, the food is so flavoursome and very well presented. The service was excellent from the moment we arrived from the moment we left the staff were very attentive. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very relaxing and chilled making it a a great dining experience. Would definitely recommend.

The positive reviews led me to book this restaurant for a meal with a friend, and we both drove 1.5 hours to get there. Unfortunately, the experience didn’t match the expectations. The staff member taking our order seemed noticeably impatient while we were deciding on our food, even though we were considering options that would have brought our total to over £150. Both of us also felt uncomfortable with the way we were spoken to. We can’t say for certain why, but the interaction left us feeling singled out in a way we haven’t experienced elsewhere. The food was merely average, our sides arrived incorrectly, and the peppercorn sauce was more like a thin peppery gravy. Overall, we left disappointed with both the service and the food, and we won’t be returning.

Food was amazing. The location is not too far away from city centre if you like to walk, but the road is closed fo roadworks. For that I gave only 4 stars. But at I said, the food is wonderful. The staff was very attentive and friendly. You should try. Nice and clean restaurant. The atmosphere was great, with nice music, which was not too loud, just right.

Google
We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a stay in a beautifully renovated English house. Friendly staff, excellent food and service (both breakfast or dinner). 10/10, and to make it an 11/10, just add a holder for shower gel and shampoo in the shower, guys. 😬

The best steak in Oxford, without a doubt! Myself and my partner visited for a business celebration and the Porterhouse far exceeded our expectations. We were quite loyal visitors to a competitor who serve sharing platters, but this establishment blows them out of the water. We shared a cote de boeuf, which came with a very generous portion of chips and salad, cooked perfectly and a really high quality cut of meat. I also had a cocktail which was easily one of the best I’ve ever had, better than some cocktail bars! Nice atmosphere, lovely staff, and an all round great time. Highly underrated, I can’t urge you to visit enough!

Yelp
We stopped on our way driving through Oxford. We were hungry and looked on yelp and were so pleased to find this lovely pub. Wonderful ambience and food. Steak was delicious! Great service. And we had a really good chocolate dessert.

Yelp
A great steakhouse without needing the qualifier in Oxford. I went with my son and had a fantastic sharing steak, comparable to Hawksmoor or a top-US steakhouse. Outside of the pedestrian menu options, they give you a menu of the day's beef, an assortment of sharing rib eyes, porterhouses and chateaubriands, with the size and recommended number of people very clear. Our ribeye (cote de beouf) was incredible, cooked perfectly as ordered with a great char. Nice wine list with good options by the glass, 500 ML carafe or bottle. The only downside was a very, very limited number of starter options. Also nice to get out of the tourist area but stilll only a 10 min walk from the city centre. Hope to get back to Oxford again for another visit.

Yelp
A great cozy old school steakhouse with delicious steaks. Even better service (Francesca was super sweet and helpful) and excellent draught beer!! A bit pricey but well worth it. Make sure to make time to stop by this amazing place when visiting Oxford.

Yelp
I am from the United States and know what a great steak taste like. I can tell you, The Porterhouse has some of the best steak I've ever had in my life. Staff is superb and the ambience is excellent. I have been twice now and have left fat and happy both times!

Yelp
This is a steak-lover's paradise with a bounty of aged-beef cooked to perfection, knowledgeable staff with a passion for sharing the best of British produce and aged steaks with their customers. Tucked away on a quiet residential street, it's worth the visit. The restaurant, which includes a small number of rooms for overnight guests, is tastefully decorated and creates a welcoming atmosphere. Truly worth the visit!

Yelp
This restaurant is AMAZING!!! One of the best steak restaurants ever and I have been to some of the best Cut, Ruth Chris, Arnie Morton's. The quality of the meat is really top notch. Organic, grass feed - really great. Good wine list, service is great. A must go to in Oxford.

Yelp
The service is very kind. The restaurant is very convenient to find, the environment is very warm, more and more people will come in.

Yelp
Grassfed steak is the reason why I came here to see if the UK lives up to standards better than America. Tender and juicy and didn't have to send any back. You made us Men happy!
