The Potato Place

Ordered to go and the potato was good 8.5/10. I put the sour cream on it before I decided to take the picture. The peach cobbler tastes store bought 5/10 is my rating on the cobbler.

Purchased two potatoes for $38. I have been going to this place for years and when you walk in now the entire menu has changed and is not for the batter the first time I open my potato and it smelt sour but the original menu that we have been getting for years is no longer present, please consider where you spend your money this potato was terrible and I have been going here for over 20 years but things have really changed

The menu has changed, 90% of what they had is now gone! I won’t be back! they’ll be out of business soon! New menu is DRY ! Update: I gave my review before ate the potato. I literally have been coming to this place since college (I attended WSU in the late 90’s)& as I stated the new menu is BOLD. My friend above (as they replied to my review stated) is actually my daughter. Whom of which has been accompanying me her ENTIRE LIFE she’s now 24, I use to set her car seat on top of those 3-4 little wobbly wooden tables that was in there as we waited. She & I would be the perfect ones to state the quality of the menu & the quality of that terrible potato & toppings that was microwaved so long the topping & the skin on the potato was HARD & CRUNCHY, also the garlic butter was literally nonexistent & the potatoes had absolutely no flavor. But as you can see instead of replying respectfully they replied with a rude demeanor. Now let’s add that the customer service has accompanied the quality of the food & went down hill as well. The new menu options still suck no matter how you try to justify it or regardless of the date of the menu she posted. And as a long time customer I WONT BE BACK. I wish you the best of luck with that menu & with your responses to your real life reviews from real longtime customers. And yes sometimes less is more but this time you’re less is actually JUST LESS! $35 for 2 potatoes with only 4 toppings each & chicken that was absolutely disgusting thankfully it wasn’t but 3-4 pieces of it on the potatoes we ordered I was able to pick it all off.

Cece was amazing. Personal and made me feel welcome. I brought a friend first time and we enjoyed the Sweet baby rays potato it’s a must try.

I ordered the steak supreme and it was the best baked potato I’ve ever had! Every time I have out of town guests this will be a restaurant we stop at!

I've been coming here for years. They never disappoint and the options are plentiful and hearty! They're fast and the curbside service is very handy for when the parking gets tricky! Good job guys and keep it up!

So I'm new to Michigan and Mt friends rave about this place, so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the build your own potato. I got garlic butter. Shrimp, Spinach. Chicken breast and bacon. Topped with the creamy cheese. I have only one complaint, and that is that I wished they used real grilled chicken breast. The chicken seaned to be the kind you buy frozen to add to your salads. It would of been a 10/10 had the chicken breast been grilled/ cooked fresh.

Tried this with my son after a trip to the Charles A. Wright Museum. We were very VERY excited to try this after The Potato Place popped up in a Google search of "restaurants near me." He has food allergies and I am kind of a picky eater (I like only melted cheese, roasted/rolled onions are great but I hate them raw, etc.), and this seemed to fit both our needs. The potatoes were huge, and they were cooked totally to the right state of fluffiness. I got the Cajun Chicken Bayou Potato. A little bit of heat - I would have liked a little more, a nice creamy ranch, loads of chopped, correctly-cooked bacon, and garlic butter. It smelled heavenly when I opened it and it tasted great too. My son got the Taco Potato. Ground taco meat, grilled onions and peppers and big hunks of tomato. It was even served with tortilla chips, so he was scooping his potato like a nacho. In my opinion, it would be better with cheese, but my kid is allergic to dairy. Only four stars because I would want more spice for something labeled "Cajun," (still a really good potato) and they only had 16 ounce bottles of pop/water; I think fountain pop/water in different sizes would be better.

I LOVE this place- it's the place your friends don't know about because it's huddled up in the university area And don't let that lack of parking stop you- I order online and they bring it right out to my car out front! For $14 you're getting dinner for two or I eat it for two meals- make your own potato is the my go-to but they have so many specialty items Everything's good I go all veg with just Parmesan cheese by my husband goes all out with the meats and cheeses No idea why they haven't opened up another one yet- so popular!

When I was a student at Wayne state I went to the potato place several times a week. I haven't had a potato from here in at least 15 years. I was driving in the area and decided to give them a try. The first thing I noticed in the upgraded interior(again I haven't been here in 15 years). They have big screens with images of the most popular items and the full menu. I ordered the house potato (chicken, bacon and broccoli) with mixed cheese and garlic butter. The cashier told me it would be about a 10 min wait so I went to sit in my car. I received a text when my order was ready (less than 10 mins) and couldn't wait to get home to eat. The potato was as large as I remembered but I feel it used to have more butter and cheese. I added sour cream when I got home and was immediately taken back to my college years. I'm glad to see the quality has not declined.

We stopped in here after walking around the Wayne State campus as it is right across the street. The place is very clean (even the bathrooms) and we had great service. (Even had full size ice waters.) I had a potato with chicken, broccoli and bacon (a d a side of ranch.) The potato is huge and it was nice and hot. It was good but I would probably order something else next time. My hubby had the chili. I thought it was good, he thought too tomatoey (but that is a personal thing.) All in all I will come back.

We ordered Lunch through Door Dash today. I ordered the Philly Supreme Cheesesteak Potato. Funny it didn't look like a Philly Cheesesteak on a potato, with all that broccoli. It more like mixed vegetables with cheddar cheese . Don't let me start on the firm chunks of beef some with fat attached. I was looking for tender thin slices of meat , that wasn't there either. Yeah, I was underwhelmed by this lackluster meal. It was also on the dry side. For a potato this size you'll need to use quite a bit of butter to help keep it moist. I think the quality has went down and the price has risen with this place. I really didn't want Potato Place because the last time I had it, I didn't enjoy it . Sometimes you must take one for the the team. They can definitely do better in the future with the quality, taste and presentation of their food especially if they going to charge you an arm. Oh yeah you're going to pay extra for butter, sour cream ect.. especially if it don't come on it. Im not saying don't give it a try, I just would prefer better quality even if its as simple as topping on a potato.

Clean and updated inside, very friendly, fast service and delicious huge loaded potatoes. They're not open late, but you want this when you come home from the bar! Order you one at closing time and put it in your fridge for later - it heats up so well. We had the meat lovers and the chicken Cajun one - both were so yummy. Go to here.

Two weeks ago some friends and I were taking about what kind of restaurant we would open if we could. I said I'd open a stuffed potato bar. This week, there was a make your own stuffed potato restaurant! I may have gone overboard, adding ham, bacon and salmon with my broccoli and cheese sauce but OMG it's so yummy!!! I couldn't eat it all at once, ado I've got food for a while lol

The service was fast. I ordered online and it was ready at the estimated time. It was fresh & hot. Steam came from the container as soon as you opened it. The potato was a very good size. All the toppings were correct and at the top. Garlic butter melted inside the potato. Im pleased. It could've been a little more chicken but i still got nice & full. The lady at the register was happy and well mannered.

Staff was great and helpful. The place was clean and simple . The food was good but it was overpriced. I spent $54 for two potato's topped with veggies n cheese, two cups of soup and two drinks.

Everything you need for a YUMMY ass little lunch/meal! Big ole russets, a multitude of toppings! Polite service! In and out! Nice trendy looking little spot worth easy charging for electronics. Nice and clean. I LOVE IT!

So darn good! Reasonable prices for the portion as well. I had the Cajun chicken potato which was everything I ever wanted: cheese, Alfredo, chicken and bacon. Incredible. I'd probably add broccoli next time. I also got the meal, which came with a dessert and a drink. The strawberry cheesecake was delicious. I have had something similar at other places, and it never disappoints. My total at the door was just over $20. Very reasonable and this will become a regular in my diet. I want to try everything on the menu.

This place rocked my world. The staff were SO SWEET and my Cajun chicken potato was phenomenal. Wish I lived closer and wasn't just visiting!

The food is mostly good and usually clean...but I have a whole attitude from my last experience and I would just HIGHLY suggest checking your food before leaving especially if you live over 30 minutes away! Let me preface this by saying I ALMOST NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT FOOD I RECEIVE. This is about thee service! I came and ordered the same thing I ALWAYS get and just so happened to come before closing this time. The employee must have been feeling rushed or overwhelmed because instead of extra garlic butter I received ranch sauce and instead of shredded cheese she rung me up for cheese sauce. This didn't upset me and again I'm not one to look for things to complain when someone gets my order incorrect --I understand the food service industry. What frustrated me about this visit is while at work I called to notify the business of the order issue and notified the young lady that I spoke with I would like to come get my 2 ounce soufflé cup that I paid for. THE EMPLOYEE proceeds to ask if I still had THE POTATO. I told her I ONLY HAD HALF (but this was not my issue.) THE EMPLOYEE ADVISED to bring EVERYTHING I had remaining back and request to speak with the manager. After work I did just that. My frustration is how the manager decided to handle this in addition to his side kick cashier who wanted to give me a whole lecture on bringing back half of an order. NEITHER heard the part where my issue was I JUAT WANT THE FREAKING GARLIC BUTTER I PAID FOR AND YOU EMPLOYEE ADVISED TO BRING BCK WHAT I HAS LEFT! Forget the fact that your employees: 1. Enter my order in wrong which resulted in me getting a wrong order and this wasn't what I complained about. On top of that you want to continue to tell me about how it wasn't fair to your business that I'm now getting a free meal. WOW! 2. Have me ranch sauce instead of MY FREAKING GARLIC BUTTER! 3.It's an inconvenience for me to have to drive to address something your employees got wrong . 4. YOUR EMPLOYEE advised to bring back the other half-WHY ARE YOU GUYS NOT ON THE SAME PAGE ON WHAT YOUR POLICY IS FOR THESE SITUATIONS! I TOLD HER I ATE HALF THE POTATO!! Getting someone's name will not change that fact that this will continue to be an issue if your EMPLOYEE advise patrons wrong. 5. I came requesting to speak with the manager and your cashier agitated the situation by continually laughing and injecting herself into a conversation which could have went really left if I didn't have to wisdom to remove myself from the conversation after you Mr. Manager also continued to laugh as if this was a joke. People's time and money is not a joke and the fact that this was is not a good look nor will I be returning. And the fact that you felt like you sis me a favor by remaking the food. Don't worry it's in the garbage. I don't know what ya'll May have done back there with all the laughs and giggles.

I stopped in while visiting Detroit for the draft and experienced great customer service and delicious food, definitely try it out!

The food here is very good you get a pretty big potato that has all kinds of different things in it I never had any issues eating anything from there

My first time there, February 15, 2024 and I will definitely be going back. The staff was perfect, answered all my questions for my first time. The food was great. I got yhe Steak Supreme with Quaso sauce and it was absolutely delicious. I'm already recruiting my friends to go back with me.

Cool little spot with fast and friendly service. HUGE potatoes with tons of options. I decided to keep it fairly simple with some broccoli, cheese, and A1 on mine. My potato was pretty good, very filling. Got the veggie gumbo to bring home and that's a win! My friend had the pulled pork...unfortunately, she is sick sick SICK from the pulled pork potato :(

This is a neighborhood staple, and hidden gem. A Wayne State campus landmark. Spot has been here for years and the menu has grown with tons of offerings. If you can think of it, they probably can make it. A loaded gigantic bake potato anyway you want it. You can also order noodles with similar additions. They also have cakes, cookies , pies and shakes. Located smack dab on the middle of Wayne State campus. Check them out, it's worth it!

I'm so disappointe! I've been coming here for 20+ years. Today I decided to eat in the store. I ordered the Alfredo,no chicken, extra broccoli,two sour creams, one garlic butter. In all the years my order only changed when they changed the veggie potato recipe. THE CASHIER ASKED ME IF I WANT THE SAME ORDER I USUALLY GET. I said yes, but repeated the order any way. I got chicken,no extra broccol, i had to go back and pay for the butter and sour cream and also get cutlery. Again, I ate there, the potatoe was slightly warm. To top it off the workers tried to insist that I did, in fact get the mentioned items, as if i offended them by asking for what I paid for.

The Potato Place is okay for a takeout lunch. Some of the potatoes on the menu range in price from $10 to 16. Pretty overpriced for a large baked potato with inexpensive toppings like bacon bits and freeze-dried chives. The restaurant is around Wayne State University and it is really difficult to find free parking. If you manage to find free parking you will have to walk around the block. There are better places to eat in the area but if you are craving a lot of carbs, cheese, and butter this might be a decent option.

So this was my first time having potato place. This was delivered by door dash so my review is in food only not the service. The portion sizes are huge!! This was a nice value for the price. Topping choices/combinations are plentiful here. Food was packaged well and not one drip leaked out. Great job!! My only dilemma and reason for the one star removal is flavor. My potato was bland, which was sad. You have to season the potato, there's tons of it in the bowl. Seasoning was an option that I did select, even asking for extra garlic butter. Just blah!! I don't know if it was just forgotten or overlooked but it killed the meal. I added my own seasoning to get what I was looking for. Overall great topping and decent potato... just be prepared to work with it a little

I had the Philly Steak Potato. It was great and I was able to make two meals from the potato.

The banana pudding looked so appealing on the menu I had to try it! ABSOLUTELY NOT a good idea!! Not a drop of pudding it... bowl of whip cream, bananas, and 4 cookies that's what you get for $4

I work downtown Detroit and it's very difficult to find good food in the day time due to most restaurants being closed up until 4pm (due to COVID-19). THIS IS MY GO TO! I order directly from their website and delivery doesn't take long. There are so many different choices of potato styles to choose from. Yum!

First off I placed a call in an my order Eas completely WRONG when people ask for peppers an onions that's what they mean, they gave me roasted veggies which included cooked CARROTS something I didn't ask for.and when I called the lady on the phone said she can only give me half my money back since I have the potato, as if I live nearby an can just return a damn potato. I informed her I won't be that way until I'm off again next week. An they offered me half my money back THIS IS MY LAST TIME COMING TO YOU ALL THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIDNESS, and the lack of effort to fix the problem is yet another reason I will not recommend this place ever again.

I ordered a Cajun salmon and shrimp baked potato. I got extra butter and it was amazing. The salmon was a tad over cooked but the flavor makes you forget that. The customer service was awesome!!

Placed a large lunch order for work. They were very accommodating. They put names on each order. I personally had the house potato. It comes with cheese, chicken, broccoli, garlic butter & bacon. It was so deliciousness & filling. If you have a big appetite, it's perfect. But It's also big enough for two people to share. Give this place a try! I'll be going back.

I ordered two potatoes online. At the appointed time, I went in to get my order. I was told that my order was next. So, I waited...and waited. Only when I complained, did the girl go and pull my order from the warming station. I let it go, only to get all the way home and my order is incorrect. Called to get a refund, surprise, no manager on location. But I can call back later to talk to them. How about take down my information and call the manager? I have been a customer for over 20 years. Super friendly staff, and an absolutely amazing menu, anything you can think of to put on a potato and they serve mountain dew. Also have charging stations. Desserts available but we didn't indulge.We're going to the Van Gogh exhibit at the DIA and stopped here for lunch. First time but it won't be the last.

I order from here at least twice a month!! I get the build your own potato and put all my favorite toppings on it along with shrimp. I don't eat dairy so I get the olive oil ( with extra olive oil). It is so delicious and a decent portion that looks like a full meal. It is hot upon delivery and can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or Dinner

My friend wanted to come here before she moved to Florida next month. I heard about The Potato Place from my friends who attended Wayne State and I looked it up on Yelp before I left and I knew it would be a tough choice on what to get! I went with the Broccoli and Cheese with garlic butter and a side of ranch dressing. I wish I would have added grilled chicken because it was so delicious! My son ordered the bacon and cheese and I ordered the sweet baby rays for my boyfriend to take home. The baked potato was humongous! It literally took up the whole takeout container. There was so much cheese on my potato it was so delicious! If you come on an empty stomach you will eat the whole thing like I did! The potato was so soft and tasty. Some people complained about the price, but it was enough for two people to share one potato. For $8 I'm sold! I definitely would love to come back and try the other combinations! The space is small, the place gets packed, and it's CASH ONLY. I'm glad someone told me that before I got there. There's an ATM inside, and also another ATM outside next door. It's located in the same strip as Sweet Loraine's Mac n Brewz and Wayne State.

I used to go to this restaurant all the time & loved it back then. I had not been in while so I decided to visit now. The exterior of the business is a little run down. There are several seats and tables inside the restaurant. The restaurant only takes cash but they have an ATM inside for a charge. It took a little while before anyone came to the register to take our order. We waited approximately 20-25 minutes for our Potatoes to be ready. The staff was not enthusiastic. They did handle the large crowds that came after us well. I ordered the taco spud Potatoe and the small (16 oz.) yogurt fruit slushy. You have a choice of garlic or plain butter on your Potatoe. You also have the option of which type of cheese you want. I chose the garlic butter and creamy cheddar cheese. Onions, peppers, tomatoes, and beef came on the Potatoe. Tortilla chips and taco sauce were provided on the side. The Potatoe was good but not as good as I remember. The yogurt slushy is more concentrated now and does not taste the same. I would not order it again. I paid almost $14 for my food. They also offer ice cream, desserts, sandwiches, and noodles.

I used DoorDash for my meal because I had to have a working lunch. I ordered the Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Potato. It was the ABSOLUTE WORST thing I've ever eaten in my life. The potato was lukewarm, the cheese was cold, half of the veggies I added were cooked, half were raw, there was little to no bbq sauce, the chicken was processed, and it the overall look of the potato when I received it was disgusting. It looked as though someone had vomited into the container. To top it off, when I called to complain about my order they were rude, didn't really care to hear why I was displeased, and just kept repeating for me to call DoorDash to get a refund. The manager never apologized and the worker as an afterthought said, "Oh yeah...sorry." I wouldn't suggest dining here and I'm never returning. The only reason I even gave them one star is because that was the lowest option I was given. Personally they don't even deserve that.

This is quite a hidden gem! Veggie potato great and the philly steak supreme just as great. Vegetarian gumbo fantastic, lots of heat which I loved and fresh. Even better it's made fresh per the owner. A bit pricey but large portion size on potatoes for sure. They were busy with a lot of carryouts and staff was friendly and efficient. Great job and will def go back to do the BYO potato.

Not good. It's shocking to me they've survived this long serving edible, but flavorless potatoes for 3x what they should charge. If this is your "go to" or you consider it a "hidden gem", you really need to dine out at other places and reevaluate your view of this place.

Second time getting lunch from Potato Place and it's the second underwhelming experience I've had. Expensive, bland, nothing special. This time I ordered the Cajun Chicken Potato and apparently because I didn't explicitly let them know that I wanted CAJUN SEASONING they didn't put it on??? Despite my ordering the CAJUN chicken potato??? So confused. It was bland bland bland. Save your $20 and eat elsewhere.

Order online and pick up for best service- delicious options, decent pricing, only real downside is parking being nearly impossible. This place has been around forever, and I'm not sure why it isn't up there with other Detroit staples, but everyone should give it a try.

I was treated to this place by a friend of mine. I ordered the Philly cheese steak supreme. I wasn't overly pleased but it was OK. I will give this place another shot as I see other varieties on the menu and I'm expecting much better.

I have been a customer for almost 30 years, The Potato Place offer a variety of toppings for your potato. The food is always fresh and the customer service is awesome. I live 45 minutes away and travel just for the potatoes. I love this restaurant.

Great place to eat. Lots of options - giant potatoes, baked goods, ice cream all of which I tried. The potato was excellent, the lemon pound cake not so much, but the banana pudding ice cream was off the chain. A few things to know- they only take cash (ATM on site), make sure you pay the meter (street parking) and the place is small. I plan to go back and would recommend this place.

I've patronized them for about 20 years. The new owners are doing their best to keep things the same. However, my last few visits have been a little disappointing (just a little). They amount of cheese isn't the same, significantly less. The new biodegradable containers collapse when stack on top of one another causing toppings to stick to the lid. I will continue to patronize. I hope they read and listen to the reviews and make improvements.

Their huge spuds have been a guilty pleasure of mine for many years. Your order begins with buttered noodles or a humongous baked potato. You can pick between a few cheese choices, several veggies and meats. You may add garlic infused butter or plain butter. I don't even want to think about the caloric intake of my favorite: Italian sausage, with mixed cheese, garlic butter and extra sour cream. Mouth watering! I only order that monster once or twice a year...there is enough for a 2nd or even third serving. There are other tasty items on the menu as well such as sandwiches, baked goods and ice cream. Parking is awful, though. Take someone with, to circle the block while you go in for your order.

Their potatoes are HUGEEEEE! My biggest problems were that it's CASH ONLY and everything kind of lacked flavor. Luckily they have an ATM inside but it's time to get with the times and allow credit cards. We ordered the meat lovers, a broccoli with cheese (added bacon) and their most popular potato, which I forgot the name of. They were huge, hot and satisfied the craving of a baked potato but overall just okay. They take a while to come out which is to be expected as their sizes were huge and they were busy. Overall a cool place to visit and cross off your list but bring some S&P, get extra garlic butter and order sour cream because they need major help in the flavor department!

Well, this place was a huge surprise for me and my friends who ate there yesterday. A good surprise. Their menu is amazing, so many choices. The staff was friendly and welcoming. I had the Detroit loose burger potato. Excellent! We had a group of six and everyone had something different and everyone was impressed with how good the food was. I recommend this place for something different. It's a small place for dining in, the carry out business was very busy. Looked like a lot of college people, it's near Wayne State. They also have a lot of dessert items. I had a Boston cooler and it too was great! I'm sure we will go back. Please check out their menu and go, you will not be disappointed.
