Exciting Restaurants to Try in San Jose 2025 | Eater

"Old-timey ads from newspaper pages on the walls and napkins held by printing press stamps hint at the Pressroom’s former existence as the home of a San Jose newspaper. Start with a zero-proof Evening Edition cocktail, its chai spices lifting above the lemon, before transitioning to ahi tuna poke tacos or entree-sized plates of ratatouille and beef bourguignon. The hubbub is palpable with the after-work cocktail crowd jostling for space alongside couples and groups here for the Editor’s Cut, a bone-in tomahawk rib eye flambéed tableside." - Christina Marie Mueller

The Pressroom: Tomahawk Steaks and Duck Waffles Are Coming to Downtown San Jose | Eater SF

"Set in downtown San Jose’s Lyndon Building, built in 1884 and former home to the Mercury News, this new restaurant aims to provide an "elevated dining experience" for power lunches and attendees to hockey games at the SAP Center — owner David Mulvehill says, “Downtown San Jose doesn’t have that elevated dining experience,” and “We’re trying to capture that experience.” The menu leans on California’s abundant seafood while pairing battered artichokes alongside steaks such as ribeyes and tomahawk steak au poivre; brunch offerings include duck confit and waffles, a signature Benedict of toasted challah, prosciutto, hollandaise, and Kaluga caviar, and banana cream French toast with banana custard. General manager Justin Coutts “cut his teeth at iChina and a few Santana Row restaurants,” and chef Luis Cruz arrived from Sacramento’s Iron Horse Tavern among other spots. The beverage program skews local: Mulvehill, who also owns Five Points and Dr. Funk (a Tiki-inspired bar in San Jose), tapped staff from his other venues to craft the cocktail menu — there’ll be familiar drinks with a Lyndon Building twist (a martini variation and examples like using olive-infused gins are cited as ways of pushing the program forward) — and there will be 10 beers on tap including Mexican-style lagers and Humble Sea out of Santa Cruz; the wine list “will speak to both the high-class and accessible aspirations” of the project. The interior, designed by Basile Studios (the team behind Eos & Nyx), aims for wow factor rather than gimmick, with details like old-school check presenters as nods to the paper industry. The space also hosted Nvidia and its large convention in March; as Mulvehill puts it, “If you’re static, it doesn’t work,” underscoring a desire to keep evolving beyond the opening. The restaurant opens Thursday, March 27 (story updated March 28, 2025 to correct details about Mulvehill’s other restaurants and the offerings)." - Paolo Bicchieri

The Press Room is a beautifully designed restaurant with a stunning bar and a spacious, well-planned seating area. Whoever handled the architecture and interior design deserves major credit—it’s modern yet comfortable, with clever touches like the newspaper-style artwork that I especially appreciate as an artist with a design background. We’ve been twice—once for happy hour and once for dinner—and both times it’s been surprisingly quiet between 5:00 and 7:30PM. It’s a bit of a mystery, because the cocktails are fantastic, the food is delicious (and not overpriced like some other spots nearby), and the service has been consistently excellent. The bartenders are friendly, knowledgeable, skilled, and attentive, which makes the experience even better. Perhaps the slower traffic has more to do with marketing or location, because this place has so much potential. It’s the kind of venue I’d happily recommend to family and friends—and we’ll likely be back next week. I can easily picture it being booked out for holiday parties, especially given its proximity to many Bay Area tech companies. There are garages nearby, and street parking is available (and free further down). While we’ve made reservations, it seems they accommodate plenty of walk-ins. Overall, it’s a great spot—stylish without being stuffy, well-run, and worth visiting whether for happy hour, dinner, or a special event.

Food was delicious! The highlights were the ahi tuna nachos and the bread pudding. I would come back for the bread pudding alone! Got the steak and it was well seasoned and tender. The drinks are really good too. I got the bourbon ledger and it was very well balanced for a whisky cocktail. They have indoor and outdoor seating and space to accommodate large groups but I recommend you call ahead and get a reservation because it's pretty crowded during peak times

Took a long pending visit to The Newly opened Pressroom in Downtown. Ambience is great. We went for their brunch and were not disappointed. The Armstrong and Benedict Arnold with Mimosa’s , followed with French toast were spot ON. Must try. Next time will try their dinner menu.

Very nice upscale decor. The staff was courteous and professional. The food was delicious. The portions are not huge which is a good thing. Also had some cocktails which were yummy. There is also a bar / lounge attached to the main dining area.

Made reservations for the night. We had the oysters, ahi poke nachos & the home made bread, plus dessert Volcano molten chocolate cake. Everything was pretty good except the volcano molten cake it was dry & had no flavor for the price. The oysters are amazing highly recommended and service was great they kept coming around refilling our drinks and did not rush us out.

I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. The service, the taste of the food and the whole place was a vibe. Every plate was perfection, we especially enjoyed the fried artichokes, baked Brie and fried chicken.. and our server Charles, did not miss!! Thank you, Pressroom!!

Ordered a pasta dish (~$32) that said it would come with table side shaves truffle. When the dish arrived I saw there was no truffle on top, so I asked my waiter about it. The waiter said they ran out of truffle and used truffle oil instead. I have three issues with this: 1. It was not disclosed to me beforehand, when I ordered the dish, that the kitchen was out of truffle. A good restaurant would have communicated this to their waiter beforehand so that the waiter can notify customers. 2. Using truffle oil is a very poor substitute for real truffles. Truffle oil is made with synthetic aromatics and does not actually contain truffle. 3. After I voiced my displeasure, there was no attempt to make things right— I think a possible solution would have been to subtract the cost of the truffles from the pasta dish, which is the reason why the dish is so expensive anyway. In terms of atmosphere, it was not my cup of tea. While I appreciated the concept of being inspired by journalism, the execution felt more like a corporate attempt at being quirky. I also ordered the poke nachos. They were forgettable. Overall I would not recommend this restaurant because it is uninspiring at best and dishonest at worst.

I’d give this place a solid 3 or 4 out of 5. Since they just opened, I’m cutting them a bit of slack—especially for the wait we had. My partner made a reservation for two on a Thursday night for my birthday after seeing a bunch of friends post about the opening. Booking was super easy online and we got seated right away, which was nice. The place was thoughtfully decorated and has a really clean, upscale vibe – the overall atmosphere was great. Our appetizer came out super fast, but we waited quite a while for our main dishes with no updates from the staff. The place was filled for a Thursday night but not overly crowded. The food itself was pretty good, just kind of pricey for how small the portions were. Here’s what we ordered: Poke Nachos – 3/5 Tasty, but the portion was tiny. We finished it in like five minutes. Pan-Seared King Salmon – 3/5 Cooked well, tasted fine, but nothing special. Crispy Pork Loin Katsu – 4/5 This was crispy and juicy. The mushrooms and potatoes it came with were delicious too. Overall, we definitely spent more time waiting for our food to come out than eating. Not sure I’d come back just yet, but it wasn’t a bad experience. Hoping they smooth things out as they get more settled.

Yelp
The ambiance and service was great! Love the touches paying homage to the press/newspaper history. The food was delicious especially the ahi poke nachos and the Thai steak salad. The bourbon chai cocktail, the final notice was in point, spirit forward, but still well balanced.

Yelp
Unfortunately did not make any off the soft opening events this past week but a few friends got a glimpse of the interior and loved it. Always good to see another great looking bar/restaurant make a splash in downtown San Jose. Will update this once I have a proper visit. Love the comic stylized art in main room.

Yelp
The space was beautiful and welcoming, with excellent service. The poke nachos were perfectly prepared, and the cardamom chai cocktail was both balanced and delicious.
