My friends took. me here for an early birthday dinner. They love this place and I can understand why. Woodstock is a perfect Hallmark movie-esque town and I can imagine this restaurant as an enticing place to get toasty and have a hearty meal.
The interior is very New England and I could see it as a perfect spot for a romantic date night. We had a reservation and the hostess was so sweet and friendly. They took us to our booth and the first thing the server did was ask whose birthday it was, as it was clear my friends let them know in advance. She then not only wished me a happy birthday, but spread pretty confetti all over the tablecloth.
I had a Not-So-French Martini to start, made with Smuggler's Notch (VT) Vodka, Metcalf's Raspberry Liqueur and Pineapple juice. It was good, but I would have preferred more Metcalf's (I love their liqueurs). My friend got the Harvest-Tini with Green Mountain Vodka (VT), Cointreau, Local Apple Cider, , Maple Syrup, and Lemon Juice. She loved it.
We decided not to do the prix fixe, as they don't eat salad and true to their foodie nature, they ordered an array of far more food!
For starters, we ordered:
The thinly sliced House Smoked Salmon, served with Raifort Sauce, Capers, pickled Red Onion, and Toast rounds;
The house made Country Pâté made with Pork and Chicken Livers, dried Cherries soaked in Port Wine, and Pistachios, offered with a Cumberland sauce, Mustard, Cornichons, pickled Red Onion, and Toast rounds;
The Pear and Brie Strudel: delicate layers of Strudel baked with caramelized Leeks, Port poached Pears, and Brie; served with a Port Wine Cinnamon drizzle.
The pasta del giorno, a ravioli stuffed with ricotta and served with a pesto.
All of the above were to die for.
For our main meals:
My friend ordered the Carré d'Agneau Royale, a boneless Rack of Lamb, first grilled, then wrapped with Spinach and Mushroom Duxelles in Puff Pastry; finished in the oven and presented with Sauce Bordelaise. It was delicious.
I had the Halibut topped with warm olive tapenade in a beurre blanc sauce, which was also excellent.
Her husband had the mushroom risotto, which looked very creamy. It too was excellent.
For desserts:
Pâte à Choux: Profiteroles filled with Vanilla Ice Cream; topped with our house made Chocolate Amaretto sauce and toasted Almonds;
Maple Crème Brûlée infused with Vanilla Bean and Totman Hill Farms Maple Syrup; topped with a layer of caramelized Sugar;
Raspberry Mousse Cake: a flourless Chocolate Cake topped with a delicate Raspberry Mousse and coated with a layer of semi-sweet Chocolate; served with fresh Raspberries and Chantilly.
White Chocolate Cheesecake made with White Chocolate, served with Raspberry Sauce and Chantilly. Served with a birthday candle for me!
The desserts were truly exceptional.
I would come back here in a heartbeat. The food, the ambience, the service, was all top notch.
