The Prince

Tried to eat here on May 5th and made a reservation for four. Two people in our group arrived a few minutes before us and were seated. When my boyfriend and I arrived, we were IDed and informed the pub is 21+. My boyfriend was denied entry 3 days before his 21st birthday. We confirmed on the website beforehand the restaurant was only 21+ on Saturdays, May 5 was a Friday. The bouncer told us the policy was "discretionary," more like discriminatory. One of the woman in our party, also 20, was allowed entry minutes before us. The bouncer checked her ID and allowed her in. When they saw my boyfriend (who was completely sober) they denied us service for no real reason. They screwed up our plans and lost our business. Our friends left and we had to make last minute arrangements on a busy Friday night. Very disappointing.

We went to try the Sunday roast. Ordered the lamb roast, was ok. We didn't enjoy the whole experience due to the service, that it was correct but you could notice that they were annoyed while working. I don't expect the service to be really joyful but for that price I'm expecting someone that can tell me a recommendation without an attitude. Maybe if you try the pub in a "less busy" day, they'll be in the mood, but I think there are plenty of options in Stoke Newington to go instead.

There is nothing more upsetting than dragging yourself out of bed on a Saturday morning in pursuit of the perfect roast only to find yourself somewhere that thinks charging £12 for dry chicken, soggy cabbage and one roast potato hidden in a mountain of boiled ones is acceptable. That's why I go to gastro pub The Prince; it's very close to my house which means I can roll out of bed just before they stop serving at 4pm and still get my moneys worth (although it is advisable to book in advance if you're going late or in a big group). The best thing about their roast is the option to have a slice of everything, for no extra charge. This usually involves chicken, beef, lamb and pork and of course their corresponding sauces. I'm not really sure which goes with which, not being much of a traditionalist but apple sauce goes great with everything as far as I'm concerned. I love this pub, it's gorgeous inside, light and airy but with that unbeatable pub atmosphere, there is a conservatory at the back and a smoking courtyard and the most wonderful food and friendly staff. It's down a little suburban street in Stokey, a bit off the beaten track and a great place to spend a whole afternoon eating, reading the paper and drinking off the hangover. It is a little pricey, but well worth it, so just try and get someone else to pay.

I spent many many hours here from 2003-2007. I spent new year's eve 2006 here, and have many fond memories of Miss Melanie's quizzes at the Prince. I made some pretty wonderful friends in this establishment, ate some pretty delicious food (their chips are top-notch), and drank far too much at far too wrong of hours of the day. I don't know how this place is faring now that the proprietors Lucy and Jon are gone. But it's worth a trip off Church St. to check this place out.

The Prince is one of the best-looking pubs in N16, hidden-away on a back street... The food is really tip top, and it's the big draw - I don't think it can really compare to the atmosphere of the old Stoke Tup/The Lion or the Shakespeare... but lunch (never cheap) is always of a very high quality. It's certainly in a different league from the Rose and Crown and the like. This being Stoke Newington, there's always one table of awful parents who think it's fine to take Maisie, Olly and their six toddler friends to the pub for the whole afternoon and run riot, like a pre-school version of Lord of the Flies on speed. Can't they just all stick to the Three Crowns (the biggest creche in north London) and leave us in peace!? The Daniel Defoe is on to such a winner by banning kids. You know chaps, you can't have kids and expect to still have the same life you did before... (although apparently in N16, you can!).

Had their Sunday roast this weekend and couldn't believe the quality! It was SOOO delicious. Great spot in a quiet and beautiful neighborhood. Great for families. All food sampled was great. Not a lot of outdoor seating, but otherwise a true delight. Try the Halibut or the Seabass. YUM! Oh, and the Cadbury's Flake Cheesecake!

What an amazing roast. It is a few pounds more expensive than most local pubs (it is about £14/£15 for lamb,chicken or beef, or a mixed meat selection) but it is significantly better than any I have had in recent years. You get so much more for your money- you get a large plate of delicious meat and a enormous separate, selection of fresh vegetables which you can serve yourself. Each person gets their own gravy or sauce as well to prevent arguments. I am a huge fan of yorkshire puddings and always asked for an extra one when I am ordering. The waiter tried to dissuade claiming them to be huge, but I stuck to my guns, and annoying had to eat every bite to prove a point (they are really big) It is a nice place to go during the week for a drink after work, but its forte is sunday lunch time, where I would recommend booking before hand.

The prince is, above all, a great place to eat food with your drinks. Although it's a BIT pricey, it's not too bad, and the portions are pretty sizeable, so you could always share. The sunday roasts are delicious, even for the veggies, although they do a very tempting selection of organic meaty specials too (i've struggled with that board on many an occasion!). The staff are friendly too, and the beer garden is tiny butexistant! The only real downside is that sometimes the kids out there are a bit loud, but as it's usually my friends kids doing all the hollering, i can't really complain too much. Oh, and they do B R I L L I A N T chips.

When my ma and pa were visiting from Australia I immediately booked a table for dinner here as I knew they'd love the food, being fond of good pub grub as they are. The roast lunches here on a Sunday are amongst the best in north London and well worth a visit. There is a good selection on the menu, especially for vegetarians. Upstairs is a massive second bar/function room which is perfect for those birthday parties which are too big for your pokey flat. There is a wide range of nice wines and beers to choose from and the staff are friendly and helpful.

A favourite local pub for my partner and I. Great atmosphere with a solid selection of beers. I also often attend the Life Drawing class upstairs on a Tuesday night. Great fun and would recommend to all, even if you are not artistically inclined.

I don't really know why this pub and The Londesborough exist in such close proximity as as far as I can tell, they offer a pretty identical service. Slightly overpriced gastro fair and drinks on long mahogany tables. I mean really blah blah blah. I suppose if the one nearest your house is full, you can always try your luck at the other. Perfectly serviceable but blur your eyes and you could be in either place.

Set back off of the main road, the Prince is a warm and friendly place that always has a seat. Amazing modern British cuisine, good "Beer and a Meal" specials, and a nice ever rotating selection of London craft brews. Quickly becoming one of my favourite locals in which to dine and drink.

Cute pub tucked away in a cute residential area. It's a bit dark inside but they have a nice selection of beers and ciders, the food looks lovely, and they have comedy nights that I'm keen to try.

The Prince is a lovely pub tucked away from the busy Church Street. I have been there many times with both friends and family and everyone always enjoys the delicious food and friendly atmosphere. The food is traditional and modern British cuisine. The prices are reasonable at £10-15 for main courses, which are of a good size and will fill up even my hungriest friends. All the desserts are homemade and superb so try to leave a bit of room - if not you can always share one! The Sunday roast is perfect and gets really busy so book a table! If you are just going there for a drink there is a really good selection of beer and ale. The wine list offers something for all tastes and the wines are sourced from small and often family run wine-yards. If you are not into the alcoholic drinks there is a good selection of organic juices and really nice fair-trade coffee and hot chocolate. The staff are very friendly and kids are welcome. There is a restaurant area at the back, a small beer garden, function room available for hire, and a comedy night every first Thursday of the month. What more can you want from a local pub?!?

This is a lovely independently owned pub away from the Church Street cattle market. The decor is I think slowly being changed, its been ongoing for a couple of years (think Wembley Stadium timelines) never quite figured out how they could serve food with all the paint peeling off the walls by the stairs, but I can put up with that as long as I don't get bits of plaster in my pesto. Great wine list and beers. Food a bit expensive - the vege Sunday lunch is good, (but why does it cost the same as the dead cow lunch? £12.50 - a bit pricey for a bit of nut roast and veg) Homemade apple & horseradish sauce are great touches. Staff could have better bedside manner (didn't laugh when I asked them if they had colostomy bag changing facilities in line with imminent EU directive) My only gripe is that on Sundays the middle class parents turn out here, bringing many young children (not that I'm against children) it just seems to me that the kids don't really want to be there and make lots of noise (its all about the parents!) - the parents try and get in with double buggys (trying to prove that the bigger the 3 wheeled buggy the better parents they are) and the place is not built for this, we ate our Sunday lunch being shuffled constantly by 'Jake & Beths' squeezing their £1000 buggy in (bought by her mother in Cheltenham) with all the kids off their heads on Ritalin riding in on Fairtrade wooden bikes and the mum shouting at the top of her voice ''TOBY COME HERE!' etc whilst downing chianti like she'd been trapped in the middle of the Sahara for a month. The docile husbands, clad in the mandatory stubble and North Face body warmers, holding their Sunday Times newspapers tight into their chests in the same way they'd desperately clutch their children at a Gary Glitter gig, desperate for some 'posh nursery food' like they had at school. One lady at the next table with twins breast-fed both of them 3 times whilst we were eating lunch - my friend from New York who was with us thought it was a cabaret act laid on by the pub's management and gave her a round of applause and a $5 note as she left. So my advice is go during the week or Saturdays are not a busy, the last Sunday we were in we spent £75 and didn't really have a relaxing lunch due to all the chair shuffling although the food was good, its a shame because this is a real hidden gem near the mediocrity of Church Street. Give it a go, but take some headphones and a kalashinov.

This place should be relatively easy to run successfully, but somehow the new owner seems to not quite hit the spot. Average food, no atmosphere and odd decor (is it being renovated? Is it somewhere 'new'? Are 10 different people deciding what the place will be/look like/offer?) The worst thing above all is the charmless service. If you are running a pub and serving food.think of the things you have disliked in all the 'gastro-pubs' you have ever been to and DON'T DO THOSE THINGS IN YOUR PLACE!........ and then..think of all the things you do like in the best places you have been to and DO THOSE THINGS! Running a successful pub goes so far beyond having clean loos!

Gastro pub extraordinaire, The Prince serves gorgeous food in beautifully decorated surroundings. Down a little back street in Stoke Newington this is always a popular choice and is usually packed, but if you want some peace they do have a private room you can book for your group if you're eating. My friend once went there on a night when they didn't have any beer in the whole pub (!) which I'm sure was a one off but if it does happen again they have an excellent selection of wines. I have heard that their Sunday roasts are spectacular so that will be my next visit.

The Prince used to be a traditional local and was called IIRC the Prince of Wales. The traditional local crowd faded away, but luckily gentrification of the are saved these premises from closing completely. I like this place, but sometimes they seem to get things a bit wrong. For instance for two or three years, the windows of the pub were not washed once. As you walked up to the pub the lights shone through a greasy film over the glass. I might be wrong to do so, but my conclusion is that there is probably a similar lack of attention to detail in maintaining cleanliness in the cellar and kitchen. And you know what they say - retail is detail. Saying all that more recently the windows seem to be a bit cleaner so maybe the whole place is on the up.

This place is great - excellent selection of beers on tap, can't fault the food especially the Sunday Roasts, which are now a weekly institution. We went there late last year and the food wasn't good at all - the new proprieters have done a great job sprucing it up, and their dog Scrumpy is a lovely addition to the place. They also allow (well behaved) dogs in there too!

Gone completely downhill quicker than Eddie The Eagle (that dates me!) under the new management. It's wierd, like they're on a kamikaze mission. Nobody goes there any more. Now a dump. Real shame.

A wonderful friendly place and great staff. We had our wedding there last month approx 140 people in total. Great advice, great food and very reasonable prices. Everyone had a great time and nothing seemed too much trouble to Phil and the staff there. Worked really well for us as we had music and dancing upstairs downstairs great for talking, eating and drinking. We even got a refund for the Champagne not used which was a big surprise!

A fantastic local pub tucked away just behind Church St. Nice warm decor and for me, the best Gastro-pub in the area and well worth a visit.

This pub honestly had the worst service I've ever seen. Staff were grubby and looked like they hadn't showered before serving food. The food was cold and by the time the staff bright the rest of the accompanying dishes it was frozen. I wouldn't bother again there are much better pubs in stokey
