The Best Irish Bars for St. Patrick’s Day in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"The Prodigal Public House opened just a few years ago, but you wouldn’t guess it given the restaurant’s warm, well-worn feeling. Order a basket of fish and chips and plunk out a tune on the upright piano tucked into a corner." - Eater Staff

Such a cozy and fun pub! My partner and I went here on our last day in Minneapolis since it was less than a block from where we were staying. They have a small beer selection, but every beer that I tried was really great so I didn't mind at all. Didn't get any food, but had fun reading and drinking. It's pretty loud inside and can get hectic on a Friday night, but I loved seeing so many people excited to see other people.

Finally stopped into that cozy spot we’ve been driving by. And wow, so glad we did! The owner welcomed us right away and even found us two seats at the bar after we did the classic Minnesota shuffle asking folks to scoot down. Cozy vibe, fantastic drinks, and delicious food. We’ll definitely be back for a mid-week hang!

One of my favorite spots in the cities! The owner, Jeff, is so welcoming and fun. The atmosphere is great is great - relaxed, but fun. Food is delicious. Drinks are fairly priced. I absolutely love this place & highly recommend to everyone!

Google
The Prodigal Pub is truly a gem in the Twin Cities. It has a fun bar up front, then you walk thru a tall narrow hallway - that feels and looks just like pubs in Ireland- and there's a cozy living room in back. I love the wall decor, cute mix-matched antique furniture and feel of the back room. It's by far one of most authentic Irish pubs in MN!

Google
The Prodigal Pub is my Cheers bar. Even when someone is new to the place you instantly feel like family. And this isn't the kind of family you are born into, more like the kind of family you've deserved all along. The staff and the patrons are all so warm and welcoming. And fun! You feel right at home when you walk in the door. Like the friendliest UK pub you've ever been to. Great tap beers and cocktails. The pot pies are to die for. And if you're having a rough day just pull up a bar stool at the Prodigal and let the Prodigal family cheer you up. Tell them Keith sent you...

Lively but quaint Irish or British pub. It felt like being back in Ireland. The energy was so much fun. Madison was greet behind the bar and made excellent food recommendations. Check it out!

The love is palpable here- and the Guiness, pot pies and flat bread all support that vibe. The walls tell a myriad of stories and evoke so many memories. Thank you, Governor Jeff, for putting so much heart into your pub!

Google
Great atmosphere. Food was decent. Prices charged don’t match the menu and the explanation given was “taxes” … Yeah, I wasn’t born yesterday.

Yelp
The vibe of this place feels like being in an European pub. People are friendly and inviting. We mostly stopped for drinks. I was with a small party with lots of big laughter and we seemed to fit in well. We had the moo moo platter of fried goodness. It came out hot and crispy. This is a great place to meet with adult friends to catch up and have a cold drink.

Yelp
After a long drive to Minneapolis from Council Bluffs, we wanted to hit up a bar close to our Airbnb and we kind of stumbled upon this gem. We walked in and luckily found a table with a few comfy chairs around it in the back. Unfortunately we were too late to order food, (I was dying for some fish and chips), but we all had a couple drinks and they were really good and priced nice too. The waitress was super nice and actually from somewhere close to where we lived, which was really cool. My group almost went back to this bar the next night but we had too much fund, lol. I would definitely go back to the Prodigal Public House in the future!

Yelp
Stopped here for wings with a buddy and I was really impressed. The best thing about my visit was the bartender/owner. He was really friendly and it was clear he was loved by the regulars at the bar. He was also really accommodating and make me a spaghett. The ambiance was homey and they have a couple big tv for football. Highly recommend

Yelp
This place use to be great. But the last time we where there. WOW, is all I can say. Food was good as always but the day before the fourth and you are out of the bottle of wine we asked for. Also out of chips for your fish and chips, they substituted tots without telling us they were out of them. I hope they make it. To be out of things prior to a holiday weekend. Hmmmm.

Yelp
This is a neat pub near MIA. I enjoyed the decorations. There's a decent amount of seating. We were early, before 5pm in a Saturday, but they were ready for us. I had the chicken pot pie with salad greens and my daughter had Margareta flat bread it was all great.

Yelp
OMG!? I literally had the BEST fish and chips I've ever had in this country. No lie! I almost want to come tomorrow to eat this again. I've had fish and chips in many parts of the US and this somehow beats them all! Flavor is there, tasted SOfresh, perfectly fried, delicious tartar sauce, yummy fries and tasty coleslaw. The vibe was also laid back and cozy, the seating dining area makes you feel like you're at someone's home-- my friend and I had a long convo while having our meals, we felt at home! Our waiter was also attentive, sweet and helpful. Highly recommend giving this place a try. It's literally a hidden gem! I always drove by it and I finally tried it... I regret not coming sooner!

Yelp
Awesome pub. Feels like home walking in the door, if you had a happy home, and a decent relationship with Alcohol. Friendly customers and barkeep. Guinness and Cider!

Yelp
Time for an update. The Prodigal has definitely earned that fifth star. I've been here several times now since they've opened and each time I come I enjoy it even more. On one of my visits we received permission to bring in some donuts from Glam Doll Donuts around the corner to enjoy with our beers, yes you heard correct, beer and donuts are awesome together. I feel like they should add this to their menu, it would be a nice combo item like the "Hound and Bear". So let's talk about the "Hound and Bear". The Hound and Bear is a Hamms beer and a shot of Irish whiskey from Tullamore Dew distillery which is awesome together. Another thing that has grown on me is the delicious popcorn they have, perfectly popped, salted and buttered. I would say what earned that fifth star this visit was when the owner came around to all the tables and offered up some of their tasty fried cheese curds. Sure it's a community bowl of curds, but I've already given myself over to the community popcorn so why not enjoy the festivities. It's a really nice personal touch when the owner comes around to greet everyone, which I've experienced more then once here at the prodigal. Until next time Prodigal Public house.

Yelp
Since I found this pub in my neighborhood I've not wanted to be anywhere else when having a drink. Friendly service every time I stop in and the crowd is casual and always having a great time. Its a place you'll share conversations with everyone around you and even the owner will have a seat and join in. As far as their food menu goes I've only had the sweet potatoes fries which were spot on great flavor and a generous portion. The menu looks delicious and people I've asked have had nothing but good reviews on the menu choices so eager to start working my way through it. So stop in at the bar top if you're looking for great service, friendly conversation and good times!

Yelp
Great back story to this place. This was my second visit. Traditional Irish pub feel, the decor makes it look like it's been there for decades, but it hasn't. Happy bartenders. They serve food, too. I didn't have any on this late night trip

Vince M.

Yelp
This place rocks. The atmosphere is awesome, the food is good, and the drinks are awesome and cool. My friend got some elderflower drink and I was jealous of it all night. I got a spiced ginger drink, which was also awesome, I just wanted both... I get the Soup Of The Day almost everytime I go, it never lets me down. Also the owner is there all the time and is super friendly, as well as the bar staff. Try the fried green beans. Most delicious appetizer ever I'm drooling thinking about it. Awesome place :)

Yelp
Best bar food in Minneapolis hands down. It's only gotten better since opening so I had to update my review. It's family-owned and the service is warm and responsive, like you're at a family member's house. (One you like. One who brings you homemade snacks and beer.) It's a place you don't want to recommend too loudly because everyone will come and make it hard for you to get a seat. I recommend the ham toastie, the buffalo chicken flatbread pizza, the soups if you're lucky enough to stop by when they're on the menu, and the fried spicy cauliflower and fried green beans if you want a GIANT appetizer that's amazing and homemade. They also just added a meat and cheese board that should not be missed. But honestly everything is good.

Yelp
This place is a great Irish (or apparently "Celtic") atmosphere! Friendly staff and the pot pies are almost as good as the ones I make!

Yelp
Best pub in town!!! The bartender Jeff is really special. He treats you like a local and will do whatever it takes to make sure you have a good time. He made us food even when the kitchen was closed. Amazing. Can't wait to come back!!! A must see when you come to Eat Street. Do not miss!!!

Daniel K.

Yelp
Ordered two pot pies and a chicken pesto flatbread for pickup. The crusts from this place are mind blowing. Clearly made in-house; their main chef had to have been a high end pastry chef in a previous life. Reasonable prices, especially for the quality of food you get. Photo below of leftovers.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Cozy seating and sumptuous food..especially Chicken Pot Pie! Love the service and eclectic Celtic memorabilia. Will be back again.

Yelp
The Prodigal Public House is the comfortable home a block away from home every neighborhood needs. The service is right on point and you will feel welcomed into their home. The simple and easy food and drink selection will ensure you're never overwhelmed by options. Instead, you just need to kick back and relax. Here's the highlights: 1. Amazing service, the staff cares and is honestly the most welcoming I have experienced in Minneapolis 2. A comfortable alcove and setting that makes it the perfect "first or last stop" 3. A simple selection of food and drinks. I especially liked the ribs and cauliflower bites. I wish for a bit more diversity in the tap selection.

Yelp
Came to check out the pub for a pint and an appetizer. Charming place in the Whittier neighborhood. Immediately the vibe was incredibly welcoming and every inch of the wall is a conversation piece from the bar owner's treks around the world along with local finds. I ordered the special of BBQ ribs which were out of this world. The bartender/owner suggested we try a rare Welsh spirit that they encountered when visiting the distillery themselves. Unique and delicious. Please do yourself a favor and visit this gem. Unlike any establishment I've ever visited. Also, they put the Twins games on and I was told they will be updating their hours for football season.

Yelp
Great cozy and fun atmosphere with incredible art and visuals everywhere. If you don't know Jeff or Randy by the end of the night (the owners) then I owe you a beer. It's just a great lil pub with a lot of life and heart!!!

Bennett H.

Yelp
Great food! Love the pot pies. Very much a family and friends type of feel. The staff is extremely friendly and fun. 100% would recommend.

Yelp
So good. So so so good. Great food, great drinks, the owners and staff make everyone feel like family here. Love this spot! Get the cauliflower wings!

Yelp
This is BY FAR the best pub that I have been in a LONG time. If you want to experience a local, legitimate, pub that caters to your love of Irish Whiskey and local wall decorations, you are in luck. This is where anyone should go to grab a pint, play a game, listen to some Irish tunes, and sit at the bar for a shot. Straight legit. Also, the bartender is the owners daughter...could be one of the best bartenders ever! Hands down.

Bennett H.

Yelp
Best new pub in town! I love having these guys in the neighborhood-- the owners tend bar and are pastors at the church down the street. Perfect for a lively Saturday evening or a beer on a rainy day.

Yelp
Love this place! The staff is amazing and treat you like family. Great whiskey selection and good food. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
We accidentally stumbled upon Prodigal Pub last fall and were immediately hooked. The ambiance is incredibly cozy, the owners are friendly and welcoming, and - while Prodigal has only been in business for a little over a year - it feels like a true neighborhood establishment that has been on the block for decades. In light of COVID, they have great outdoor seating options. While the bar seating will always be the most coveted spots, I highly recommend going in the late afternoon to sit out front, order some fries, and drink a Guinness in the sunshine!
google avatar

Yelp
The Prodigal Public House is everything a pub should be. No specific type of clientele, but a huge mix of ages and personalities. It isn't cramped in there, but everybody is close enough together that avoiding conversation with somebody is unlikely. Even to those who keep to themselves this is a good thing, the people here are extremely friendly. By the time you have been here a couple times or more it feels like you have been there a hundred times already in familiarity with the staff and the patrons. Reasonable drink prices, good food, and a killer Guinness pour. This will be my pub for a long time.

Yelp
This place was fantastic! A perfect spot to bring a bro bestie, on a Wednesday night for happy hour, after recently moving into a house in the area! Happy hour goes from 4-6, the standard time you will find just about anywhere. Not the largest tap selection, but two finnagins and Surly furious are both great options. The bar ambiance and environment is your typical Irish bar that you would stumble across on the street. The walls are lined with photos of people, pharses, art, lights, and many interesting things. I love the blue backlight along the vodka shelf. The actual setup of the bar is square, wooden, and shaped in a way that is unique from other bars. Straight and linear can get rather boring sometimes. My bestie pointed out that you get all ranges of people coming in here. He has only lived in the area for a month and this was his 4th visit, my first! The staff is really friendly, ultra attentive, asked for my name as well. Food is delicious. The only protein option on the happy hour menu were the wings, which I really wanted to try, but the bartender advised me it would take a little extra time tonight. I decided to go for the Ruben. Multiple people advised me of the deliciousness, and boy were they not wrong. Fries were great. Reminded me of the state fair fries. Take photos and show your friends! I unfortunately did not take any photos of this place, but they will be the real outstanding representation of this establishment! Words do not fulfill the complete commitment of a review. Bring a friend or two and enjoy a happy hour or 10!

Yelp
Great joint: good people, good food, good beer, good style, wonderful support. Great local place representing MN

Rusty S.

Yelp
Fantastic joint! While beer is a commodity; atmosphere, smiles, nice people, and great service is not- this place had all of the above. At one point the bartender announced that in the spirit of the "Prodigal Son" story the next person to enter was to be greeted with a loud cheer of "welcome home" to which patrons readily participated- and that guest was adorned with a robe and served a free drink. Warm atmosphere with good bites, loved the fried pickles. Definitely going back.

Becky E.

Yelp
Truly a family establishment! Decor welcomes you in with cozy Irish vibes. Service is excellent, very friendly and fast. Nice selection of beers and whiskies. Cheese curds and fried pickles were also delicious. If I lived in the neighborhood I'd come here every week!
