This is a great store. There is a lot of selection packed into a small space, and everything is carefully picked. They have a little bit of everything, so that I am often able to do all of my food-shopping with them. You won't find fifty different kinds of olive-oil, or thirty kinds of jam, but what you will find is a choice between a few of the very best. They know how to use their space.
The owner is often on-site and the managers know their stuff. You can always ask them to point you towards whatever is best at the moment, and if you have a problem, they will help.
Don't be afraid to ask! They are also willing to order some things they may not keep in stock, so long as you are willing to wait.
They constantly have new things, as well as old standards, and they often have local businesses offering samples, or even setting up stands on their front porch!
I see some people complaining about prices, and one complaining that not all of their produce is local/organic. But let me say a few things on that.
1. A small, privately-owned grocery CANNOT be expected to compete with the prices of a monster corp like Whole Foods. Selling produce is challenging, at best, and unlike the big-boys, this place cannot buy in bulk and take care of their losses through massive diversification.
That The Produce Place has been in business for so long is a testament to the fact that they do things right. You don't get the kind of traffic and customer loyalty they have without good service and a consistently good product. Their prices are good and competitive for what they are. Don't compare apples and oranges and then complain that the apple is different.
2. They DO buy produce and a wide variety of products from local farmers and local businesses WHEN THEY CAN.
Please be aware that if corn is not in season locally, you will not get local corn on the cob. If they cannot find good corn on the cob at all, then there will be no corn on the cob to be had. If people buy all of the corn they have, you will have to wait for them to get more. Such is life. I notice that one reviewer complained about non-local produce. In February. And the lack of "fresh berries." I honestly don't know what they were expecting.
The Produce Place unashamedly buys things that cannot be gotten locally from non-local businesses. Avocados, bananas, and out-of-season produce are not going to be local.
But here is the great thing. They ALWAYS tell you where the produce comes from, and if it is organic. They will answer any questions you have. My favorite is asking the manager-on-duty which apple is the best. They are always right. They might even let you sample. ;) Want a good melon? Ask them to pick one out for you.
Seriously. This place is simply the best. I do try to avoid their busy hours, though. It is a small store. When there are a lot of people inside, it gets cramped, and with only 2 registers, it sometimes takes a while to check out.
