Best Restaurants in Oxford | Where to Eat on a Day Trip to Oxford | Eater London

"This riverside pub, situated a little way from the station, is one of the city’s best-kept secrets, along with its sister restaurant round the corner, The Porterhouse. The menu offers brilliant Scotch eggs — as good as the esteemed Harwood Arms in the capital — along with seasonal mains such as venison steak and juniper butter and wild boar and lentil pie with celeric mash. An excellent-value £7 lunch special is sadly no more, but it’s hardly bank-breaking amounts even now, and the double gin and tonics for £3.50 are the best value in Oxford." - Alexander Larman

A true gem in Oxford. Stumbled across the Punter as it was close to our hotel and we have been amazed by the place the food and the team. Even if you are not vegetarian/vegan you need to try this exquisite cuisine, turning classics into a new discovery for your palate. Special shout out to the scotch egg and the goats cheese arancino (we went back for a second serving as they were so good). The team was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We recommend highly The Punter. We will be back on our next trip to Oxford!

This was my second visit to this pub, and once again, it was an excellent experience. I went last Tuesday at lunchtime, and despite the place being really busy, the service was outstanding. There was just one person managing both the bar and tables, and they handled it all with impressive efficiency and friendliness — no one was left waiting too long. The food was exceptional, and the Bloody Marys were some of the best I’ve had. This is easily my favourite spot for vegan and vegetarian options — I’ll definitely be back again soon!

I went here because it is right next to the Thames and quite close to my b&b. I had no idea it was vegetarian & vegan restaurant. I can highly recommend this place as the food was delicious. This is a must try if you find yourself in Oxford. Also for the omnivores among us.

Lovely vegan/vegetarian pub right on the Thames path, we stopped for a quick drink during our walk. Not too busy but with a nice outdoor seating area in the sun, lots of tables reserved though!

I had a wonderful time at The Punter, where 18 of us family and friends were accommodated with great service, food and drinks. The vegan bloody mary was the signature for me, and we also had a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Highly recommendable place.

Veggie, vegan needn't be the determining factor here - this is just great food in a pleasant location a short pleasurable walk from the city centre alongside a narrow boat section of the Thames. We called on spec late on a Bank Holiday afternoon unsure if they would be serving but glad to say they were. Service was extremely efficient and professional, sat outside in the small courtyard and was served entirely at table. We shared a selection of food from the appetiser, small plates and main sections - all were tasty, fresh and interesting. I'm a meat eater and not once did I feel I was missing out on anything. Looking forward to a return to try more of their dishes.
