We ate here on three occasions in seven days, which should tell you how much we loved it.||||The ambience is immediately relaxed and welcoming - a country pub that isn’t trying too hard to be the genuine article. And they more than welcome dogs: they made our jittery Jack Russell feel completely at home:||||The service made us feel equally at home: I must single out Anna, a young Romanian woman who took a shine to our dog and made easy conversation with us throughout our meals. A real asset to the staff.||||The food! Imaginative starters, nibbles, mains and desserts, all priced sensibly and making me reach for my phone to capture the sheer delight of them. Highlights (see the photographs) Tempura cod cheeks: worth it for the batter alone. Tarragon and sour cream fries: the crack cocaine of chips - you won’t be able to resist them! Squash and ginger soup: a vast bowl of the tastiest, most velvety soup - Mrs W thought it was heavenly. Duck breast - so tender, and with a delicious celeriac purée and rich duck leg croquette. Chocolate and hazelnut marquise - so good I had it twice. Short rib: a simple starter done really well, with an intense taste. Sunday roast: cheap and simple but a sensible portion and every bit on the plate doing its job in making a delicious meal (notable heroes, the cumin-studded carrots, the zingy red cabbage and the homely cauliflower cheese). Margarita of the month: oh my goodness, a chilli infused scorcher, really grown-up, one of the best I’ve ever had. On our final visit, I asked for a dessert wine and was instead offered a local ice cider. Intense, sweet and long-legged: what a way to finish our hat trick of meals!
