24 Essential Bars and Breweries to Know in Birmingham, Alabama

"Quest, which swings more towards nightclub than bar, is a quintessential part of Birmingham’s LGBTQ nightlife. Patrons must be at least 19 and have to pay for a membership, but aside from that and Quest’s zero-tolerance drug policy, there aren’t any restrictions. Quest is also constantly putting on events like themed parties, burlesque, and drag shows multiple nights a week. Plus, all that partying goes to a good cause: Quest sponsors organizations including Birmingham Aids Outreach, Central Alabama Pride, and Magic City Wellness Center." - Sarra Sedghi

George and Andy we’re absolutely amazing St. Patrick’s weekend. Handled the pressure of having a full bar with ease. They make you feel like you’re part of the fam. Overall good experience depending on when you go and if you go with a group.

LOVE LOVE LOVED this bar. We visited from out of town, and it reminded us of our local gay club before it got gentrified. If you are looking for good drinks, good prices, great music, and fantastic drag performers, this is the place. Can't wait to come back!

Security is awesome! Had a mishap with my car and they were more than willing to help and sort it out before getting the towing companies or police involved. Owe these guys a lot!

The reason for the journey to the venue. A staple of the community and a staple in this club for a decade. You must see her shine.

It wasn't what it once was but will always be THE gay establishment of Birmingham. It was a first for this city. Times have changed, the customers have changed, employees have changed, the music has changed, the performers have changed and that's ok. When there was no where else to go as a gay person these doors were open. Then it was the place to be for straight and gay people who spread the love. When our dear friend and owner Robert Clark passed away it became a turning point. George and David have kept the heartbeat going and this place, no matter your good or bad experiences, will be remembered for lifetimes. These walls have seen great times and hope it never closes it doors. If they only could talk. Wow. New chapters of The Quest will be written forever if they do. Everyone has always been welcome. Enjoy it as long as it's here and be grateful this was a beginning of a beautiful thing, the LGBTQ community Birmingham has to this day. RIP RCC!

Inexpensive beer and fast service. This is a place my friend Billy loves. It's not my type of atmosphere nor is it a place I'd go unless he wanted too. I always have fun when I'm there with him. Oh, the employees are really friendly too.

“The Quest Club” Birmingham, Alabama Ratchet Level: High Price: $7 (No Membership, +21, Cash Only) Music: Pop, Hip-Hop This is stop one on my summer road trip for club reviews. This review was done on a Friday night in June. After 7 hours on the road I checked into my hotel around 10pm. The plan was to sleep until around 1130 and arrive o the club around 12-1230 which are typically the peak outs of any club. I overslept, but it’s okay because apparently this club is 24 HOURS! I arrive around 3am and the party is still going very strong. On the outside it looks small, but it’s a nice sized establishment with their own parking lot. The cashier is outside in a booth attached to the club. I’m not sure what her problem was but she was extremely rude. I mention I was from out of town visiting. She asked if I had a membership because that determines the price and it’s cash only. I did not have a membership, but she didn’t offer anything for me to sign up. Instead she was rude, over it, and unwelcoming. Dealing with drunk people all night can be draining, but when you’re at a gay club this is the only outlet and sense of family for MANY people. She held my ID while I went inside to the ATM which was not working. When I informed her she gave me even more of an attitude. At that point I wanted to leave. But the security stepped in to help. He was an older white male gentleman in a security shirt. He was extremely nice, welcoming, and helpful. Even he could not get the machine to work. His solution was to open a tab and just receive cash from the bartender which worked. The first room I didn’t stay in. It had a bar with a popular bartender who was very social and nice as long as a pool table. The inside is a bit dated. Looks like wood with everything painted black. Nothing luxury or modern. I went to the back room where everyone was. They were having a kiki ball. It was very entertaining because I was unaware Alabama had a ballroom scene for voguing. This room had a bar, small dance floor, dirty restrooms, and seating. The crowd had the place hype. They were doing all the line dances and tiktok dances after the ball moment was over. Outback their was an area that appeared to have a foam party earlier or there were bubbles everywhere for cleaning. People were going there to cool off. Tonight was more about people watching. The crowd was extremely diverse in terms of race, gender, and sexual orientation. A few girls served looks but overall everyone was chill. The drink from the dance room wasn’t good. Overall I don’t see myself returning. The front experience wasn’t a good one. If anything I could pop in at a different time just to test the experience. I’m your favorite LBGTQ+ critic; Shamel Jones.

Google
Really enjoyed my time here!! The atmosphere is great, music is good and can cater to anyone’s taste, all in all really great. Only thing is I wish the drinks were stronger, but other than that it’s a fun and wild night out! Very accepting and open. I’ll be back.!

Yelp
I've been going to the quest for well over 10 years, and have finally reached a super annoyed place of feeling the desire to post a bad review that I've never wanted to leave. The bathroom is by far my biggest issue. There has never in the years I've been going, been a lock on the door. Or has there been a door on the stahl.. The one time I didn't have someone watch the door for me, some woman walked in and stared at and talked at me as I used the facilities. That was years ago, but I have had a few other encounters that make me feel unsafe... I'm the type of person that prefers to pee alone.... with no one watching me..... and no risk of someone walking in on me.... it's no secret that the bar is 24 hours, but security needs to be a thing again before the bar gets shut down.... I would truly hate to see that happen... the picture I've included was this past Sunday during a bar crawl that happens every year. I expect so much more out of the cleanliness, even tho I shouldn't ... I had to Lyft home, just so I could use a clean restroom.... (that I also didn't have to pull a bunch of people out of, and that I don't have to worry about anyone walking in on me in)

Yelp
The people that work here, hang out here, and local this spot are caring, compassionate, and solid. Would recommend to friend for a good time... open late

Yelp
While this has been a favorite destination in the past - a 2+ hour drag show sucks the energy out of the venue and has the crowd running for the door... I recommend trimming entertainment to 45 minutes and letting the crowd dance and have fun... step, touch, lip sync only goes so far...

Yelp
#thequest in Birmingham is the worst of bars I have ever been too.. the staff is rude, they have several issues with certain laws.... I for one am not a fan of that place... when the first yelp review you read when you first moved to a city and go to visit the specific bar reads I hope your feet do not stick to the floor. You know you have a problem. When you mention this bar in conversation and it comes up again that I hope your feet don't stick to the floor. You have a problem. I am not a fan of this place, although I know it serves the under 21 crowd which is a good thing it allows them to have a place to go, but when you deal with an older crowd, don't play the baby bullshit games. It's the older ones of us who have the money to support your bartenders and pay your cover charges. If your bartenders don't do their job, that's not my problem. Yes I told the lady at the front door that because their bartenders didn't do their job and giving me my correct quest club ID card was not my problem, and to be told that's not their problem either that their part tenders didn't do their job. Not my problem. If you want to come out from behind there and because it's your birthday expect royalty, not my problem. If you want to threaten violence to your guest, then you know what we have a problem.

Yelp
I have been going to the quest club for almost 20 years. This week after pride fest, I came into the bar knowing it was very crowded. To my surprise, the bar wasn't that bad. I got my first two drinks quick and easy. After that, George deliberately ignored me. And he has done this multiple times over the years. I literally stood at the bar for almost an hour, with other people walking up and getting drinks immediately. When I said some thing to him, he said he wasn't working that end of the bar. So I said OK, I'll go to your end. Then he deliberately ignored that end. I have always tipped hI've been friendly with him, not sure what the problem is. He also did it to my friend, that is there way more often than I am. Do better, we spend money and expect better service.

Yelp
Now I know what you'll say. "Sophie, the baby roach in your whiskey is the traditional garnish of the true connoisseur." Or "Sophie, didn't the little critter add a layer of experience when you felt it a wriggling on that last gulp?" And I hear you and that's fair. But the fact that I didn't even get the roach round comped left a little bee in my bonnet or better yet a roach in my whiskey.

Yelp
The Quest Club serves good drinks but... after I had to pick up the tab for one of my friends (after I had already paid and tipped on my own tab), I told the bartender "Sorry, I can't tip you on this one since my money is running short now..." and he said that was okay. Two days later, I find from my online bank statement that it was $20 over what the receipt said. I called up there to have someone pull that receipt to confirm it, and two managers said they would look into it. They never called me back and I can't reach them when I call up there. This place will steal your money.

Yelp
This is a boring club full of people that just stand around doing absolutely nothing. Music? Nonexistent. You could have a better dance session in the parking lot. Drinks? Impossible to order because everyone crowds around the filthy bar five people deep and won't move for the life of Jesus H. Christ. The dancefloor was being used by an atrocious drag queen that was asking four people stupid questions as though they were celebrities. The words contrived and cheap come to mind. If you live in Birmingham, I suppose this is an OK place to come after you're burned out, trashed and destroyed. I mean, everyone in the place looked like they were already majorly faded. We're taking Arizona sun bleached faded!!! It gets one star because there's no smoking inside. Apparently there's a patio area off the miniature dance floor, but nobody in my party could find it because the place was just lame. We left after 20 minutes--spread out over two mini visits in one night.

Yelp
Was forcibly removed because I misgenderd an individual. Was told I was not allowed to come back if I missgender people. Very scary. I will never visit this place again.

Yelp
Love the quest. This is for people who want to see a good show, plenty of time to dance. OOEN 24/7

Yelp
I love The Quest. It's not the nicest looking club, but I've been coming here for around 5 years now & I consistently have a good time. A perfect place to drink and dance the night away (they're open 24 hours)! Yes, it's a gay bar, but even my straight friends have a fun time when I bring them along. :) There's two different bar areas, a couple pool tables, a dance floor surrounded by speakerboxes, and an outside patio area where you can smoke. (You can't smoke inside the actual club anymore, like some of the older reviews mention.) It is an 18+ club. They have security scattered around making sure there's no underage drinking. The music is usually just the current top hits.

Yelp
Have you ever been in a slightly dirty club until it was so early you had to squint from the sunlight when you left? Have you ever had a group of 8 lesbians sing a chorus of Happy Birthday to your girlfriend? Have you ever seen a 250 lb man put on a dress and tell dirty jokes? No? What about being hit on by a drag queen? That, either? No? Well, you need to get your ass out here. Yes, it's a little weird, yes it's a little dirty, and yes you're going to be flirted with by members of the same sex unless you show up wearing an "I hate gays" logo emblazoned on your KKK outfit. * You know what, though? You're going to have fun. A lot of it. This club has, hands down, the best vibe of any club in the city. They also pour decent drinks that don't cost very much, play good music, and hey, remember that big guy in the dress? Pretty damn funny. So if you're comfortable with yourself (and if you're old enough to read this, you should be) head over here and spend the night, part of the morning, and possibly into the early-next-afternoon boogie-ing the night away. *If you show up here like that, someone will hurt you. Badly. Just saying.

Yelp
I've went to this club multiple times now. As a smoker I'm very pleased that I can smoke in the bar. The bartenders are very friendly and are willing to work with you over the noise of the club. The place is usually very packed on the weekend, and the dance floor is usually quite full. The music is very good to dance to and the scene isn't too shady, I very much enjoy this bar and recommend it!

Gigi A.

Yelp
I had an amazing time here! The drag show is pretty good, though I've seen better, its still verrry enjoyable. Loved the dance music, the people were very nice! Definitely have to go again if I go up there :)

Vanessa F.

Yelp
By far the worst gay bar I have ever been to. I have given this bar so many chances because I want nothing more than for a gay bar to succeed, but they have let me down too many times. Visitors should tries Al's before they even think of setting foot in here. The place itself is so unkept it makes you feel like you need to wash your hands every time you touch something. Asking for a manager isn't something I do, but because of a situation I asked for one and there wasn't one to be found. If there is an issue, they pretend like they can't hear you. I've never felt so unheard in my entire life than I did here and it's a gay bar, somewhere I should feel accepted!!! White republicans make me feel more welcome than they did which is something I never thought I'd say about a bar like this one.

Alex S.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. No typical "meathead" drama because you smiled at some dude's girlfriend. Honestly, out of all the years I've been going, I've never even seen a fight. Drag show is alright if you're into that, they are very talented ladies that perform. However I highly recommend Generation Nexxxt. Also, please understand that this is an "alternative lifestyle" club and that discrimination or bigotry is not tolerated. At all. To this end, it's a little slice of heaven for tolerant people who have to reside in Alabama.

Yelp
I have been to the Quest many times, I love it !! The people are nice and friendly. If you are looking for a good time then you should DEF stop by this place. The only thing I dont like is ... IM NOT A SMOKER, this place is smoker friendly so when you 1st walk in its like a smack in the face but its very easy to forget about and not even smell anymore ! Actually going to be there Saturday night .. Jan 7th ;) Hope to see all you there.. Come to have fun and enjoy yourself !!! LOVE IT
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years. Its definitely not the nicest place in town. They do have cheap drinks and open 24 7 365. No pics allowed in the bar which is unheard of.
google avatar

Jeremy E.

Yelp
This place has to be the end of the line for anyone who has been out earlier in the evening. The dance music totally sucks!! I would rather go home and drink on the porch as to have come to this rathole!!
google avatar

Kayla S.

Yelp
I've always been a fan of The Quest. Even though it's most often one of the filthiest clubs in Birmingham, that's honestly part of the charm of this place. The Quest is a 24/7 club that offers club goers the freedom to dance the night away and be themselves. This establishment gives patrons the vindication they need to have a good time and forget about it all which is why The Quest is so popular. Although I've encountered the not so friendly every now and again, I more often than not end up making friends and meeting some wonderful people. It's a dance type club so the DJ is usually playing some type of house music or dubstep mix or just whatever poppy tune is popular at the time. The drinks are fairly priced but don't expect to get one too quickly if they're busy. Pro Tip: They give you a number if you open a tab. Remember that number however you can! Giving them your last name instead of the number will only make your bartender angry.
google avatar

Greg R.

Yelp
A great alternative club that is open 24 hours

Matt P.

Yelp
The Quest always seems like a great idea when it's last call at your favorite bar. My experiences have been mostly positive. I would not recommend going to the club alone whether gay or straight unless you are looking for something other than an after hours drink. Sometimes the vibe gets a little creepy in the wee hours. But, I have had a good time dancing and hanging out late night with friends.
google avatar

Mary T.

Yelp
I have been coming there for many years, is an awesome club for dancing, just not enough women to pick from. But in general is a good atmosphere.... perhaps i b there tonight at the dance floor! come and join!

Yelp
I slipped and broke my leg and ankle in this nasty hell whole in August of 2016 and they refuse to provide me with the name and contact information for their insurance carrier so that I can file a claim. I missed work, was in a cast for 6 weeks, almost lost my job and still have pain from the break in my ankle. As filthy dirty as the place is, there is no doubt in my mind that I slipped on a spilt drink. My attorney requested the tape immediately so we could see exactly what happened but they did not respond to that either. It has been almost a year and a half and I have been overly patient with these people. I talked with the person who manages their Facebook page and he gave the owner, Keri Hopkins and the manager David Mason my messages. My attorney sent certified letters that we know they signed for. I got the phone number for the manager, David Mason and called and left messages for him along with text messages. No response. I have now turned it over to Fox 6 on Your Side and I have filed a complaint with the State's Attorney General. I always really liked going there and we always took people who came to visit us from out of town there, but now they have ruined that for me. I only rated it a 1 star because Yelp made me put something there...

Kyle F.

Yelp
Headed in the Right Direction, But Not There Yet... As an "out of towner," I was expecting a lot since this club was rated best dance club and it was one of the few places that was gay friendly. The space is great and you can even play pool and fools ball if you want! However, the drag was not that good. The performers looked great, but they were not too good at interacting with the audience. The main drag queen who was hosting substituted humorous interaction with profanity and awkwardness. It's like when you don't know anything funny to say so you curse a lot. Second, I ordered a Long Island, and I am positive there was no alcohol in that drink! It was my first drink all day so I wasn't too wasted to not notice. I was so sure that I went back to the bartender and asked if the bartender forgot to put alcohol in the drink. He said there was one shot in the drink and that I could buy a second shot for the price of another drink (Long Islands are supposed to have multiple liquors mixed together, so I thought maybe he just pre-mixed them and poured a shot of the mix from one bottle). Being polite by giving him the benefit of the doubt and frankly just desperate at this point for a buzz, I paid another 5 bucks for an added "shot" from an unrecognizable bottle. Well, again, no taste of alcohol and certainly no buzz later. If the drag hosting was decent and if I didn't have to pay 10 bucks plus tip for a sweetened drink with no alcohol, then I would have rated this post marvelous. Instead, my comment is that it needs to improve in key areas like the aforementioned.

Kevin E.

Yelp
I drove from Atlanta to check out this place. I have never been treated so rudely at a club in my life. The bartender was so rude to me and the person checking IDs was so hateful and treated everyone like they were criminals coming in. The overall atmosphere was disgusting. It was like a bunch of hillbillys gathering to party. I will never go back. YUK!!!!!!!!!!!

Brooklyn C.

Yelp
I have been to this club many times, however I think it 's not at all it could be or should be. I find this club to be a huge let down. I think the management could improve dramatically. It is not a very comforting place nor does it have a calming setting. I find it truly sad that one of the only few alternative club's in Birmingham AL , and it is over ran by drug's, poor management, and over dramatic regulars! I would not recommend this club to anyone who is a person of class or character.
