Where to Eat and Drink After Hiking in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia - Eater DC

"Spent hikers duck into the Rabbit Hole for craft beer, burgers, and plates like loaded pork fries made with Pecanwood smoked pork butt served over a bed of smothered cheese fries. A selection of specials including potato and cheese pierogis are available on a limited basis, so make sure to call ahead to check. Diners can eat indoors or sit outside to take in views of the Maryland Heights trail." - Tim Ebner, Kalina Newman

Phenomenal! The staff were friendly, efficient and helpful and the food was all next level superb. So many Vegan and Vegetarian options that are zero sacrifice. The Decedent artichoke crabless crab cake was no lie the best I’ve had sided with hush puppies… no contest. Our host was kind, gracious and had all the answers. Recommended two beers that were exactly what I was looking for and had a peach libation that my partner thoroughly enjoyed. The view is def my favorite in Harper’s Ferry with a view of the meeting rivers, Maryland Heights and the trains. 10 out of 10!

On this day we were 5 adults, the location is a colonial setting with an outdoors great eating area. Our great host was Clearance a professional young man who advise me that the pork fries was his number one choice and I am glad to say that he was correct. The meat was soft and tasty, the combination with the fries made it for a great meal. 2 people in our party had the red rice and hemp seeds burgers and they were very satisfied. One blue ridge burger and our friend said "that it was excellent"... and the Appalachian BBQ sandwich that she said it was 10 out of 10. Please do your taste buds a favor and give this place a try.....

Google
Such an awesome little place to visit! The servers were very friendly and the food was absolutely delicious! They had a wide variety beer on tap! Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants! Always something to look at and I had a beautiful seat!

Google
The food some food was good some was just ok. My mom got the pulled pork and she could barely eat it because of how spicy the BBQ sauce was. My fiance and I both got burgers which were seasoned well. My burger was a little underdone for my liking. I asked for a little bit of pink, but I got quite a bit. My fiance enjoyed his burger though. We also got soft pretzel sticks and mozzarella sticks to share which were good. There is quite a lot to look at while you're just sitting waiting for your food and there's a small stream I guess you would call it, in part of the restaurant. They definitely do have the tables too close together though.

Google
Great view and right in the middle of shops and the historic neighborhood. Friendly service and food was good. The Alabama white sauce was tasty too. Not spicy at all but made of mayo, small amount of Cajun spice I think and horseradish. It made for a good addition to the pulled pork sandwich.

Google
I came here because it was after 5 p.m. on a Monday, during the off season and nothing else was open. Lucky me, this place is really cool! 5 stars for atmosphere. Great decorations and lighting. I can't comment on the food because i only ordered the pretzel sticks and beer. Lots of beer to choose from including local brews. The menu looks short, but with limited space on the side of a mountain, you couldn't expect an overly large amount of choices. Come for the beer and the view. Great place to recharge while exploring this amazing town!

Google
I stopped to try their blueberry Sangria on ice. It was terrific. The patio was fantastic with a view of the mountains and the trains coming and going. All of the wait staff and managers were helpful and kind. I was especially impressed with the owner.

Google
We had a great time here! My husband and I came for lunch with our kids on a Sunday afternoon. They have a few things for kids, like hot dogs and chicken tenders. My husband and I shared poutine, a salad and French onion soup. Everything was delicious! We enjoyed the cozy fire place. They also have a deck with heated domes in the winter, we may want to try that next time!

Yelp
The good quality, basic affordable bar food seems to be a lost art these days, but boy did the Rabbit Hole restore my faith in the industry. The food here is really good for bar food cravings. I had an order of chicken tenders and fries for less than $10, what a steal! The food wasn't anything special, but it hit the spot for my craving and they are good about dipping sauces too. They brought out everything quickly and the place had a nice lively atmosphere. I wish we could start to see more places like this again, instead of the pretentiousness of a lot of restaurants lately.

Yelp
Had a good meal over Mother's Day weekend. The wait was long but we got to sit on the porch which was beautiful but a little chilly after being soaking wet. Service was good. The cheese fries and pretzel rods we had were awesome. My husband enjoyed his wings. The burnt ends on the pulled pork just had too much "burnt" for me and kept me from enjoying the flavor. Prices were normal for area and portions were large. Other than the 6 wings for $13 felt steep. Probably would return for a drink outside. The view was fantastic. But the menu was lacking for me.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. We were there on a chilly spring day and were able to have a beer on the outside deck while waiting for an inside table. The views from the deck are well worth the price of a beer- and there's a huge selection of beer and wine to choose from! I would love to come back on a sunny day and eat/drink on the deck! The interior is cozy and filled with what I would assume are stolen/found signs from all over the place. We sat near a funky fountain that was inside the fireplace. It had a waterfall that flowed into a "lake" filled with crystal obelisks and I was thinking I might be absorbing something good as I ate my salad. The interior fireplace scene reminded me of a lake in a cavern....how often do you see something like that in an Applebees? My husband liked his fish and chips- tasty, hot, and not too much breading on the fish. My salad was very fresh. I would come down The Rabbit Hole again!

Yelp
The best plave to eat in Harpers Ferry. Great service- kind and knowledgeable. The portions were huge and priced appropriately. My BBQ was wonderful and crunchy at times. Very flavorful. Great fries and coke slaw. Huge selection of beers. Food comes quickly despite the crowds l. This is the place where I will go again.

Yelp
They were busy when I went and they couldn't keep up. The food came out quickly and was pretty good. I liked the barbecue pork sandwich I got despite not having enough barbecue sauce. However, the runner just dropped off the food and left. We didn't even have time to ask for silverware so I had to go get it myself. Finally, the bathrooms are located right where the staff navigate to the kitchen and there is nowhere to wait for the single stall bathrooms. Overall, I didn't love the experience and will try somewhere else next time.

Yelp
The food was delicious for the price. I've been to other places in Harper's ferry and this restaurant has to be the best. The sauce on the burger made it very good. The sweet potato fries were hot also delicious. The pulled pork was good but the fries that came with it were a little cold. The food came out really fast after ordering! The place is pretty eclectic and has an interesting ambiance.

Yelp
My partner and I arrived at this restaurant and were welcomed with a lovely ambience from the decorative light bulbs hanging on the ceiling, nostalgic historical signs, and the bustling servers coming out with hot plates of food. It was a wet breezy Saturday and we had the option to sit outside in the igloo-like hubs that provided outdoor heating. I noticed on the menu this vegetarian burger that contained fried artichokes , lettuce, tomato, raw onion, French fries **I chose sweet potatoes instead and Cajun Aioli on the side. Also added 4oz hummus to dip the fries in, the whole plate was just amazing. The artichokes were juicy & soft but still had that crunch to it and the brioche bun just melts in your mouth. A great meal to treat yourself after a long day of hiking :) thank you Rabbit Hole for this experience.

Yelp
The restaurant is cute, but the food is blah. The unfortunate thing is there's not very many places to eat in Harpers Ferry at night, and this is one of very few places that is open. It also has a great view, which is why I think it has such a great rating, but the food that I had was dry and overrated. Their entire menu is nothing but burgers and sandwiches. I wanted actual food so I ordered an appetizer of sweet potato fries and fried ribs, but all the moisture had been cooked out of them, and the sauce that accompanied the dish was just an aioli. The waiter was very attentive at first but then it took a really long time for me to get my check.

Yelp
Amazing food and service sitting at the bar. Eclectic decor make this a fun place to spend an afternoon.

Yelp
Overall delightful lunch stop in Harper's Ferry. The patio, elevated over the street below provided a lovely outdoor ambiance, with the train occasionally passing by. Our server, Paul, was terrific. As I recall, they had a pretty good selection of beer with a few cider options. The fruity Swilled Dog cider I chose was awesome and was just what I was in the mood for. My food was pretty good though it didn't wow me. I ordered the canal chicken sandwich. It came with "avocado smash"that looked a bit more like grocery store guac. I was expecting the sandwich to be a bit more exciting. But it did taste good. Overall, this is a great spot to relax for a drink and/or lunch.

Yelp
My husband and I had an early dinner here after hiking the Maryland Heights trail. This restaurant can get pretty busy especially on a weekend, so expect to wait at least 30 mins before getting seated. They do give you a buzzer so you can browse nearby shops or sit outside until your table is ready. I ordered the pulled pork bbq sandwich which came with a side of fries. The pulled pork was a little dry so I decided to eat it without the bun. However it was well seasoned and the bbq sauce did help. I also liked the crispy bits. The fries were very good! Crispy and delicious. Tasted great with the aioli it came with (I wish I had more). The restaurant has an extensive beer and cider menu as well with some local options. I ordered an elderberry cider from VA and it was refreshing. If you are able to get a seat outside, do it. The views are fantastic. And while the restaurant is understaffed, the servers work fast and are very friendly.

Yelp
After a long day of hiking and tubing at Harper's Ferry, this is exactly what we needed! We came as a group of six and put our names down, where we waited 20-25 minutes before being seated at their outdoor patio. First off, the view from outside was absolutely stunning! Second, I love how uniquely decorated this place is. Calling it the Rabbit Hole feels well-suited for capturing the whimsical, rag-tag decor that adds so much character. I was starving but ended up giving in to my weird carb/junk food cravings, so I got the pretzels and the hot dog. Even though it's admittedly hard to screw up a hot dog, I thought it was great and liked the bread that it came on. The sauce that came with the pretzels was so good and paired well with the saltiness. My only minor complaint is that you could see how the pretzels were dripping with oil in the basket, which made me want to eat it slightly less. Rabbit Hole still gets five stars for how great the whole dining experience was. Our server handled all of our food orders like a pro and already had our individual checks ready to go without us asking. Our group left very full and happy!

Yelp
The wings were delicious and my wife's cheesesteak was a tremendous portion. The waiting staff all had their own vibe in a very positive way. Our waiter was so accommodating and fun to have after a long day of bike riding the C&O trail The joint itself reminded me of a bar I Named Alfies in the Bronx. A little of this a little of dat making the perfect blend of perfection. Highly recommended if in or around Harpers Ferry WV

Yelp
My partner and I love coming to the Rabbit Hole, it has become a tradition to visit this eatery every time we visit Harper's Ferry. I fell in love with Rabbit Hole for two reasons - the beautiful view of the mountains in the back of the eatery and the wide selection of beers and drinks they have on their menu! For first timers, it is important to note it can get busy, with up to a 45 minute wait. But you can spend the waiting time checking out local shops around the block as you wait for your table. I ordered the vegan crab cake sandwich and it was DIVINE! My partner ordered the impossible burger and it was a decent burger. I highly recommend the hummus and pita bread dish, the pita bread is soft and delicious! Overall, this establishment as amazing customer service - the staff are so friendly and I truly appreciate them for looking out for everyone on a hot summer day.

Yelp
My friend recommended this restaurant to me for my road trip to Harper's Ferry and it was so worth it! It was so beautiful on the inside with friendly staff! I ordered the chicken tenders (basic I know), but they were good and inexpensive. All around a pretty great experience and was worth a stop on the trip!

Yelp
Went on a Thursday night, and we got in right away. My husband got the cheesesteak and although it was messy and he needed to resort to a knife and fork, he said it was delicious and worth it. I got the house made red rice and hemp seed 'burger' and added jalapeños (I asked the server what she liked, and it was one of her suggestions. I love this kind of advice). This was SO good... I'm already trying to figure out how to make it back home, . I'm not vegetarian but it had a great texture and flavor, so, it definitely scratched the "burger" itch. The server was so nice and helpful throughout the meal that it didn't seem worth mentioning we were charged for subbing the fries with hushpuppies, which we did ask for, but we got fries by accident. When I asked about the hushpuppies I think she forgot I had subbed and put us down for a basket of hushpuppies as well in addition to the upcharge. The value for our meal overall, the service, and the food itself was so good that it was worth the extra few bucks. We already plan to come back next time we find ourselves in Harper's Ferry. We didn't have our dogs along for the trip, but I LOVE that the outdoor seating is dog friendly.

Yelp
The best place to pop in after a good hike! With an extensive beer list and the best fish n chips I've ever had- it's a perfect spot on the way into lower Harpers Ferry. If weather permits, the deck offers beautiful views and the inside is cozy and fun. I could've sat all afternoon looking at the beautiful surroundings and tried just one more beer! Their shrimp with old bay app was delicious as was the Appalachian BBQ Sammie... but I'm coming back for that fish!
google avatar

Yelp
Very very busy gastropub located in the small town of Harper's Ferry. Wife and I showed up on a Saturday around 3 and we didn't get seated until 45 minutes later. I noticed that there were a couple of tables that were open and cleared for a period of time. On the other hand, if it's not cold, sit outside, the view of the mountain and the trains made the experience really nice. The food and drinks came out not too long after we had ordered. The food tasted good. The burger was a little bit more on the dryer side, despite ordering medium rare. The beer and ciders that were on tap were delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Good service. Color and eclectic atmosphere, that will keep your eyes wondering. And the food is decent. I was disappointed with the cheese streak sandwich (steak and cheese) it was big and presented beautifully but was tough to chew and the majority of the meat ended up inside my napkin. My family had a couple of other dishes and enjoyed them. Our appetizer...the pretzel A-Mazing. Despite my disappointment of go back without hesitation and try something else. Every dish I saw come out the kitchen looked very good. So yup go visit and enjoy.

Yelp
Wonderful place to grab lunch while exploring a historic area! My husband and I each had a cobb salad. Chicken was juicy and flavorful, peppercorn dressing was lovely. My kids had the 'small plates' tenders and fries and they enjoyed both. I tried an elderberry-infused hard cider which was super tasty! My husband enjoyed his weissbier as well. We sat outside on the patio and it was a lovely day. Service was prompt and friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection of beers and the no crab crab cake sandwich was amazing. Also very relaxed atmosphere and an awesome view of the historic city.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice and food/service were excellent both times. I love the atmosphere of this place, great vibes!

Yelp
Lovely view and great atmosphere. We started with an order of their Old Bay Brined Shrimp. They were ok, a little salty. We both got their High Street Salad which was probably the most unique item on their menu. It was good and I really loved the flavor of the hemp leaves in the salad. Didn't love their lemon mint vinaigrette, thought it was too much acid for the salad. But you didn't really need the dressing with all the flavors from the hemp, blue cheese and bacon. My husband also got the fish and chips which was good. The chips were fries, not the normal larger potato wedges you get with fish and chips. Our server seemed a bit spacey but was attentive and got everything correct including offering malt vinegar with the fish and chips. We had a bit of a wait to get seated but it went quickly. Loved the selection of beers. Decent pricing for a tourist town.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in Harpers Ferry serving delicious American food. Their fries are incredibly crispy and the Appalachian BBQ sandwich is probably the best dish they have. Their short rib poutine is also quite popular, and while it's not like a traditional poutine, their short rib melts in your mouth and the sweet potato is an excellent touch. Note that they usually run out of short ribs on Sundays after 2 PM since they receive their weekly shipments on Monday. They also have a nice selection of beers and alcohol. They have a small indoor dining space, but plenty of outdoor patio space. Only a few tables have space heaters, so if going in winter, make sure to dress accordingly. Our server, Kaleila, was fantastic! She was willing to split our check, checked in with us multiple times, provided great recommendations, and overall, made our dining experience memorable and enjoyable!
google avatar

Adrian B.

Yelp
I took a trip to Harper's Ferry, not realizing the whole town is a park. There's no street parking, but there are a few lots within walking distance or you can take a shuttle and walk. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor seats have heaters by the tables for when it's cool out. The inside of the restaurant has a lot of character and the food was pretty good. We got wings and cheese steaks. They had a good selection of beers and wine by the glass or bottle. I swapped out fries for salad and there was no issue. We were seated by the fireplace, which was perfect, as it was cool the day I went. If you find yourself in Harper's Ferry, this is a good spot for lunch.
google avatar

Bryan P.

Yelp
The view of the mountains and the train station from the deck was great. Our server was very good, but the food was, unfortunately, mediocre.
google avatar

Chelle M.

Yelp
Had their new salmon dish and it was exquisite! Service spot on, and the ambiance is fantastical with a little crystal cave to admire (oh, I love crystals!) Love the music playlist as well! Super cool spot to hang out and enjoy the sites - inside and out. (they have heated pods outside on the deck that over look the rivers and mountains!) Thanks!
google avatar

Tim B.

Yelp
4th time eating here. Love this place. Tonight was first time for dinner. I'm a local and will continue to come here often. The ambiance is perfect for Harpers Ferry. The deck seating with the view is great but inside is great also.
google avatar

Aiden S.

Yelp
Really well located, and the view from our table was fantastic, but the food was mediocre and the kitchen filthy. Not coming back! The meat in my burger had a weird flavor, and the burger itself was not well cooked - no char or grill at all - as if it had been cooked on a top that wasn't hot when they started cooking. The shrimp appetizer had similar problems - the shrimp was completely over-cooked so it had a mushy texture. They were both pretty unpleasant to eat. And the kitchen looks filthy. If they aren't cleaning their kitchen, there are probably other sanitation problems here. I saw a staff member wash his hands without using any soap. EDIT AFTER READING OWNER'S COMMENT BELOW: Note how the owner does not take any ownership of these issues, and does not respond to their kitchen being filthy. Not a good sign!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Hiker friendly, great burger and sides, very cool atmosphere! Beer selection is legit as well.
google avatar

Joy S.

Yelp
The best restaurant in town if you stay in town and don't want to drive somewhere else for dinner. Pork shank was really good. But if I come back next time, I'd opt out for different sauce. Cob salad was good, but very heavy (I know that cob salad is generally "heavy", but this one was very heavy. You can eat it as entree and it will keep you full for very long time. Beer selection is good. A lot of local craft beers to try. Service was amazing. Brandon is the best!
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
Amazing location with a deck offering a nice view of Harpers Ferry. Staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Huge craft beer selection. I ordered the cheesesteak and thought the meat was missing a little seasoning and the cheese sauce was flavorless. I would definitely visit again, but order something different next time.
google avatar

Tracy B.

Yelp
This was our first time trying here since we've eaten a most of the restaurants at Harper's Ferry. It was kind of a disappointment simply because we ordered some simple foods, and they weren't really good quality. The hot dog was so over cooked and shriveled up like an old shriveled up hotdog. The hummus platter had very delicious hummus, and vegetables that was on its last day. If they weren't put on my plate, they probably should've been put in the garbage disposal. The service was good and so was the Hefe.
google avatar

Tori J.

Yelp
Nice workers but food isn't all that I love that it's dog friendly but I'm not the biggest fan of this place
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
Nice ambience inside a National Park. Came here with a group. Server easily accommodated multiple checks. Food was good. I had the pulled pork sandwich. Service was a bit slow in the beginning and they seemed startled that we'd want napkins and utensils. And ketchup that actually had ketchup left in the bottle. Other than that, it was a very nice lunch in a lovely park

Len G.

Yelp
Been many years since visiting Harpers Ferry so wanted a good dining experience. The location and dining area was great. Though our waitress had an attitude, was not engaging and disappeared many times. The staff needs to provide great service and needs to be better dressed... oh yes and not be comparing their belly buttons in the restaurant. The food was good but they need to raise the bar.
google avatar

Sally S.

Yelp
There aren't many options in Harpers Ferry for dinner. Especially important is that it's nearly impossible to get an Uber. That said this place is adorable. The indoor seating area is cute with cozy leather chairs and exposed brick. The outdoor dining area is large but not particularly comfortable. Service was average. Food was also average. And not much selection. If I found myself in the area again I'd likely go elsewhere.

Yelp
We were here on a late Friday afternoon for a late lunch. We were seated immediately. Great beer selection. We ordered the poutine, pretzels, and beers. The pretzel were great but we were disappointed with the poutine. The meat and the gravy were lack of flavor. We love the pretzel. It's soft and buttery. Service were also great. Our waiter were friendly and polite. If you happen to be in Harpers Ferry, this place is worth visiting.

Yelp
Best bacon cheeseburger ever!!! The service was fast and everyone was so sweet! I love the seats inside! The also have really cool heated bubbles in the winter! Also really good pretzels and cheese sauce!!!
google avatar

Yelp
If sour-puss expressions were an Olympic sport this staff would have the Gold!!!!. Ordered hamburger and pulled pork sandwiches. Food was lukewarm at best. Outdoor setting fantastic. And Grace was the only shining star!!!!

Yelp
Delayed review. We visited back in January. It was a fairly long wait [about 45 minutes] during lunch. Parking in general around this area is difficult due to the amount of hikers and there are designated parking areas but a bit of a walk into town. We sat outside in a heated isolated bubble. Dog friendly which was great. Service was a little slow. We ordered fish and chips and some appetizers [unfortunately I can't remember which ones] Overall, the food was alright and the service was mediocre. Good for drinks though.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Gave it 1 star for its beer list and the second star for the back deck and view. Other then that the menu is of a sandwich shop, that sucks at making sandwiches. Very disappointed they did not have real meals. So reluctantly ordered to worst cheesesteak I've ever seen.
google avatar

Kristin N.

Yelp
Our server was great and the beer list is awesome. I got the biggest portion of charcuterie I've ever had, but the baguette was stale (and bless our servers heart for trying to soften it up to no avail) and they forgot the fig jam. We sat outside on a gorgeous day and it was a nice place to relax after a long bike ride.

Yelp
Of all the restaurants I ate at in Harper's Ferry, The Rabbit Hole was my favorite. My friends and I were in HF for 3 days and we went to RH twice within that time period. I love all the beers they had on tap, as well as all the local beers they carry. When I travel and go to different cities/states, I always like to try beers from their local breweries. I particularly like to go to the actual breweries, but in case I can't -- grabbing a beer from a restaurant that carries it will do! Some friends ordered their fish & chips and it was MASSIVE! They said it was pretty delicious. I would recommend that if you have a big appetite or are sharing. I ordered the wanderdown cheesesteak with a friend and that too was huge. Between the two of us, it was the perfect amount and so delicious. Anything you order here won't disappoint. The first night some of the ladies at our table ordered their charcuterie board and had a blast. I didn't try any of that, but they said nothing but great things! Visit this restaurant if you are in Harper's Ferry. You will not miss it, as there are always people standing outside of it waiting to get in.

Yelp
Fries cooked in inflammatory seed oils however they serve Hunts ketchup (no corn syrup). Service was very good and attentive. View was great!

Yelp
Great lounge atmosphere both inside and out. Hot chocolate was noteworthy. It's a great stop in Harpers Ferry.

Aleksandra E.

Yelp
The place is located on the main street of the town. There is not much to choose from for dinner, but at least this place is solid burgers and beer and cider on a draft and in bottles. The hosts were friendly, and we were seated promptly. The restaurant has inside and outside areas. The unique thing about the place is the small cave with fresh water coming from the underground spring. The menu is pretty straightforward; some bar food like wings, chips, and the main course are burgers. I chose a blue cheese burger, and I gave all my bacon to my husband ( as you can see in the picture). For the side, I had sweet potato fries. It would be great if they would be cooked through; some pieces were raw. Otherwise, my burger meat was good, but the bun was not grilled, which took some smokiness from the flavor, and it wasn't the best quality bun.

Jim S.

Yelp
Very slow in service. We had to wait more than an hour for our food. The places was not busy but service was very slow.
google avatar

Jay T.

Yelp
Went on a Saturday afternoon had to wait for a table, but it didn't take long. They have heaters outside with igloos. We got seated inside. I love the inside! Random National Park signs. Our server was prompt and very friendly. I got the fish and chips and it was delicious! They have so many beer choices so if you're looking for a drink this is the place.

Yelp
There isn't much variety of food in Harper's Ferry, but this seemed to be THE place to be if you want food. It has some indoor seats and a larger outdoor area for outdoor dining with umbrellas for shade. Great place to eat on a nice day! Overall, the service was good, and all the staff seemed to be working very hard. The food was fine: not terrible, not mind blowing, but also not disappointing. I enjoyed my fish and chips, and the fries looked promising but weren't the crispiest, and the tartar sauce lacked the usual tang that I associate with tartar sauce. The hushpuppies that came with the fish and chips felt a little random but I would never complain about extra food :). My husband ordered the Appalachian BBQ sandwich and said it was horrible. Overall, while I thought the food was fine, it also felt forgettable, as is the rest of the food, seemingly, at Harper's Ferry. My husband and I walked in at peak lunchtime on a Sunday and had to wait 30 minutes or so for a table, which seemed reasonable given the crowd.
